Our guest on this episode of Behind the Membership is offering an interesting and slightly different perspective on memberships…  Unlike the majority of our guests Ali McGee Kelly doesn't actually own her own site, she manages https://society.socialmediaexaminer.com/ (The Social Media Marketing Society), a membership owned by one of the world's biggest social media marketing blogs, https://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/ (Social Media Examiner.) In this episode Ali shares what it's like to manage a membership as part of a wider team for a larger business, she talks about the changes the company has been forced to make as a result of the global pandemic and the Society's unique approach to recruiting guest experts. She also reveals some changes that have been made behind the scenes to enhance member experience, why the Society has decided to adopt the open door model and how Ali and her team manage content within the membership to ensure it stays relevant in an industry that changes almost daily.  About Ali: Ali McGee Kelly is the manager for the Social Media Marketing Society with Social Media Examiner. For the past several years, she has pursued an expertise in social media marketing to help businesses capitalize on this relatively new marketing resource. Her passion for making social media work for businesses is evidenced by my MBA thesis where she benchmarked the use of Social Media for small businesses in Central Kentucky. Key Quotes: “I'm not responsible for acquiring the members, but I am responsible for retaining them.” “We take pride in the level of service and communication we have with outside speakers”  “The interesting thing that I think makes us a little different than a lot of other memberships is, we do not come to the table claiming to be the expert in any one thing ourselves. And this is the same across all of our products with Social Media Examiner. We are acquirers of talent.”  Connect with Ali: https://society.socialmediaexaminer.com/ (The Social Media Marketing Society) https://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/ (Social Media Examiner) https://twitter.com/essentiallyali?lang=en (Twitter)

What does it take to transform a forgotten neighborhood park into an asset for the community? How do you figure out what you're drawn to, and then become a part of that industry? Sara Hirschler is the Marketing & Membership Manager at Fairmount Park Conservancy, a non-profit in Philadelphia. Sara played a significant role in transforming Clemente Park & Playground into a welcoming space where the community wants to gather. The Fairmount Park Conservancy is an organization I have admired for years. Since Sara started working there in 2013, when there were only 7 employees, the team has more than doubled. They even have a couple new opportunities open. Once you embrace that continuous change is a natural process for your growth and evolution, you will be reminded that who, what, and where you are now is a temporary condition, and my guest today is solid proof of that! She is currently a Membership Manager with the Girls Scouts of Southeast Florida. Kristen has not only worked in 6 different institutions but is also the founder of Teamworks, a consulting company dedicated to building strong teams and leaders of integrity, positivity, and action. Kristen also authored the book “A Year of Nothing New – Tools for Living Lean and Green,” chronicling a year of conscious consumption and a values realignment on how one spends their time, money, and energy.  Kristen Skarie in a Nutshell - Changes are inevitable. Kristen explains her life's journey filled with major changes and big steps of her moving to Florida followed by her mom's arrival, moving in with her, and how Kristen went from having no position at the time of her move to getting an adventurous position. Selfishly Caring for Self - Although thinking about ourselves might feel selfish at times, Kristen explains the importance of taking time and caring for ourselves, which she has started learning recently Permission to Transition - Upon being asked if she still experiences those moments of sorrow or the tensions that came with the changes, Kristen spells out that the aftermath of the transition of the change can take months, years, or even decades. It all comes down to seeking comfort in the permission to go through the transition of the changes that has no ‘done timeframe.'Remaining Grateful - Amidst the busy life and its chaos, it's important to remain grateful, says Kristen. Kristen explains how finding small things in our life that we can be grateful about can make our lives better. The Resilience of Thriving Through Change - Kristen finally explains how grateful she is to have something not many people do, and that is the resilience to thrive through changes. She further explains how grateful she is for having different circles of friends, and the proximity of her family, and the strengthening family circle, including everyone who all live close by. Resources:Connect with Kristen:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kristinskarie/Email for a copy of the book: kskarie@gmail.com  Mentioned in the episode: Transitions: Making Sense of Life's Changes by William Bridgesgoodreads.com/book/show/159615.Transitions

Season 1, Episode 15 — 26 November 2016 About this episode Mona Fuerstenau of Bethesda Lutheran Communities and Anthony Armitage of One-Classroom discuss a breadth of ways for faith communities to become agents for greater inclusion for people with disabilities, including advocating for inclusion in parochial schools, how faith communities can be networks of natural supports, and how places of worship can leverage their networks to help people with disabilities in areas such as employment. This is a preview of the “Faith and Inclusion: Embracing Inclusion for People with Disabilities in School and Community” Wednesday Workshop at the 2016 TASH Annual Conference. About the presenters Mona Fuerstenau worked as Speech Language Pathologist for 13 years in multiple settings; early intervention, schools and with veterans. Her passion as a disability advocate stems from the inequities witnessed in all of these arenas. She is passionate about communities of belonging and is working primarily in faith communities at this point. Her current role with Bethesda Lutheran Communities is Director of Ministry Partnerships. She is a parent of two young adults who are very diverse learners. A fan of Asset Based Community Development, she regularly encourages thinking “outside the DD bubble”. Her vision includes communities who become places of sanctuary, belonging, meaningful participation and mutual support with families experiencing disability. Anthony Armitage and his wife LeeAnn Armitage are the founders of One Classroom, parents of two children and members of Mary Queen of Peace Parish in Webster Groves, Missouri. Their youngest child Christopher was born with Down Syndrome. After extensive research to determine the optimal educational pathway for their son LeeAnn and Anthony were inspired by inclusive education and the many Catholic schools around the country implementing inclusive programs. The opportunity of inclusive education, a strong belief in Catholic education, and the desire to educate their children together in one school created a passion to help all families of children with special needs and to serve Christ's church by helping the St. Louis archdiocese schools offer a new option for educating children with special needs. One Classroom is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating inclusive educational opportunities for children with special needs. We believe every child deserves a Catholic education in their local parish school in full community with their peers. The opportunity of inclusive education, a strong belief in Catholic education, and the desire to educate their children together in one school created a passion to help all families of children with special needs and to serve Christ’s church by helping the St. Louis archdiocese schools offer a new option for educating children with special needs. One Classroom is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating inclusive educational opportunities for children with special needs. We believe every child deserves a Catholic education in their local parish school in full community with their peers. One Classroom creates awareness, promotes and supports inclusive education by providing funding, training, expert resources, sharing of best practices and connecting parents. Palm Beach Zoo’s Membership Manager, Amanda Joy, and Animal Curator, Amy Anderson, are two of the warmest, most lovely people I have ever met, and they made this podcast everything I could have hoped it would be and more! As we stood by the capybara exhibit (where I had to refrain from freaking out from pure excitement), these ladies shared their infectious enthusiasm for working with these wonderful animals. They conveyed the Zoo’s message and mission of conservation and education and how they see these animals in their care as ambassadors for their brethren in the wild. The sound of the Zoo’s animals all around us was just a symphony of confirmation of the beauty of our planet’s beautiful creatures. How much Amy and Amanda truly love and care for the animals is completely obvious. They have a true passion for what they do, and it was a privilege to have them on! Special thanks to Naki Carter (ncarter@palmbeachzoo.org), the Zoo’s award-winning Public Relations Manager who is absolutely amazing in setting this podcast up. She and her team have really been coming up with innovative ways to promote the park and its message, including tons of real-time pics and videos on their social media feeds, special events, animal paintings, and more!! Rewind to episode #84—a bonus episode all about the Zoo’s use of Pokémon Go to “lure” trainers to their park on Fridays to “Catch ‘em all” at their Safari Nights. It’s pretty fun and ingenious!! This episode is dedicated to the memory of Stacey Konwiser and in honor of all the zookeepers and other zoo staff (such as Amanda and Amy) who dedicate their lives to being a voice for the care and conservation of our planet’s beautiful creatures. This is from June 11, 2016 ... it was the Detroit Historical Museum and Detroit Historical Society 150 year celebration for Vernors. It was the end of the day and several thousand of us were outside in the courtyard of the Detroit Historical Museum to give open our can of Vernors they had handed out to all of us, take that first Vernors swig and give a Vernors toast to the wonderful day of celebration. I turned on my recorder and got some fun talk story and conversations with lots of people including James Vernor V and his son Jamie (6th generation). Tracy Smith Irwin, Director of Exhibitions and Collections, Detroit Historical Society, Sean Clyne, Data Base and Membership Manager, Detroit Historical Society expressed their gratitude for the turnout and others like Carter Sherline, Howard and Cindy MClauchlan had so many nice things to say about Detroit, Vernors and shared about all the Detroit Historical Museum and Detroit Historical Society events and activities. Events and activities that include the Dossin Museum on Belle Isle, the Detroit 67 Project and more I think are best experienced and be aware of by being a member of the Detroit Historical Society. I'm a new member and have discovered such joy in being aware of and participating in what they do and learning so much about Detroit .... my hometown where I am discovering every day means so much more to me as I learn more about my own family Detroit history. So the story on June 11, 2016 at the 150 Vernor's Celebration was about much more than a drink. It was about Vernor's, something that really impacted a city ....Detroit and the culture of the people who lived in Detroit. I'm one of them!!! Keith Wunderlich, who has written a book "Vernor's Ginger Ale" says “It’s hard to tell the story of someone who grew up in Detroit in the 1940s and ’50s that doesn’t somehow involve Vernors,” Keith and Mike Novak who is the Vernors Gnome "Woody" when not a Science teacher in Blissfield and so many others created a wonderful day. I had so much fun with Keith and Mike early that morning in the studio at WJR on the Warren Pierce Show. Warren really showcased Detroit Historical Society plans for later in the day. We had a Vernors Boston Cooler for breakfast and Warren's team ... Lori, Erin, Erica, and others all had a Vernors story. Thanks for listening. Glad I turned on my recorder and can feature another "say nice things about Detroit" segment as part of my Emily T Gail Show espnhawaii.com Telling Detroit stories and why they matter....

We talk with her about the accomplishments she’s seen and contributed to, what she’s learned in 40 years of service and the tasks that remain. About the presenters Barb Trader was the Executive Director of TASH from 2006 until her retirement this month. Barb was in direct service as a recreation therapist for 17 years in parks and recreation, public schools, and non-profit agencies. An activist by nature, she facilitated the inclusion of athletes with disabilities in the Georgia State Games and formed a wheelchair division for the Peachtree Road Race, the first major race in the country to include wheelchair users, serving as race director the first 10 years. The 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Games were the first to be held in the United States as a part of the overall Olympic celebration, due in part to a grassroots effort led by Barb and local ADAPT leaders that gathered 40,000 signatures in less than 10 days. She was a founding board member for the Paralympic Organizing Committee and an integral part of the bid process and served as the vice president for youth and community programs. She has authored and launched several national programs, including Paralympic Day in the Schools and Express Diversity!, both aimed at helping school-aged youth understand that disability is a natural life experience.
