They opened the show with a few words on what they were all bringing to our midday “Grepsgiving” lunch. (We feasted immediately after the show.) Today's main course was American Underground Executive Director Tim Scales. Tim spoke about the difference between AU and other “coworking” spaces like WeWork, indulged us in a place-of-origin guessing game, and filled us in on his journey from theater major (fun fact, yours truly was a theater studies minor, but this isn't about me), to Duke MBA, to a career in Startupland.

They also spent a few moments recapping the GrepBeat Happy Hour that took place this past Wednesday at Bull McCabe's. Then yours truly popped in with a quick update on the week at GrepBeat.com. We touched on this week's episodes of the Monday Mix and In The Soup, recapped our written features on local startups Brainery Labs and Roboro, and talked a bit about the Wednesday evening Happy Hour GrepBeat hosted alongside the American Underground. Rounding into the heart of the episode, Joe and Melissa welcomed this week's guest: Daniel Summers, the CEO and Founding Partner of Wilmington-based Electronic Lab Logs.

Stephanie Wong (@stephr_wong) and co-host Jenny Brown (@jbrojbrojbro) are back this week for an exciting interview with Tiffanie Stanard of Stimulus. Using extensive data, analytics, and integrations with supplier systems, CRM’s, social feeds and more, Stimulus helps companies make better purchasing decisions.Tiffanie's varied and accomplished background in everything from payroll to coding helped her learn to take risks and see opportunity even in less than ideal situations. During the 2008 recession, she spun off on her own to add entrepreneurship to her list of talents and went full-time on one of her first ventures. In her years of selling experience, she saw first hand how difficult and impersonal searching for suppliers and making purchases was for businesses. She developed Stimulus to aggregate and analyze real-time data from sources all over the internet to allow buyers to see a full picture of a supplier, find goods/services they need and build partnerships.Later in the show, Tiffanie describes Stimulus' multiple offerings, including relationship mapping to strengthen ties between buyers and sellers. She describes the process of developing such a powerful tool, taking it from simple search capabilities to a network benefiting both buyers and sellers, fostering meaningful B2B relationships, and even helping small businesses. As the business has grown, Tiffanie and her team have looked to Google Cloud to help them expand, and she tells us all about the technology stack and Google tools they use to keep Stimulus up and running. Support from The Black Founders Fund, Founders Academy, American Underground and partnerships with companies like Google has been a driving force in the expansion of Stimulus. Relationships with their customers have been important as well, and Tiffanie gives us real-world examples of Stimulus in action. Tiffanie wraps up our interview with news about the future of Stimulus and some advice for future entrepreneurs willing to take a risk.Episode Links:StimulusGoogle for Startups and American Underground Google For Startups: Black Founders FundGoogle for Startups Founders AcademyTiffanie Stanard

What does it take to be an entrepreneur? To turn your passion into a business that you love to run? In modern-day America, it's easy to think of entrepreneurship as something that's untouchable – only accessible to those who have an excellent education or an incredible mind. We think of Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, or any other world-changing innovator. The result? We don't try it ourselves. The reality is that, with hard work and the right amount of dedication, you can turn your interests into a viable business. We're covering this and more on Episode 1 of the Next Matters Most Podcast as Nick talks with Jes Averhart, creator of the Reinvention Roadmap, and Founder of Jess and Co. For full transcripts of episodes, head to our website: nextmattersmost.com FOLLOW NEXT MATTERS MOST ON FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM, LINKEDIN, and TWITTER. ----- ABOUT JES Jes Averhart is the CEO of Jes & Co. and creator of the Reinvention Roadmap! As a Mom, Storyteller, Podcaster, and member of a Badass Girl Tribe, she uses her flaws and lessons to fuel each incredible life chapter! Jes is obsessed with the process and power of REINVENTION and wants to inspire others to start their journey. Jes realized her true passion for leadership development and women's empowerment while leading partner engagement at the American Underground, a Google for Startups Tech Hub (aka, the 'Startup Capital of the South' by CNBC). During her tenure, she had the unique opportunity to manage relationships with Google, Fidelity Labs, Wells Fargo, Coastal Credit Union, Lincoln Financial, and others. Her time spent immersed in the startup scene also inspired her to co-found Black Wall Street Homecoming, a nonprofit aimed at closing the funding gap for Black and Brown tech founders. Earlier in her career, Jes launched a boutique event production company. She specialized in providing professional event management services for the likes of the Cincinnati Bengals & Cleveland Browns (NFL), Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA), The Procter & Gamble Company, Pepsi Cola North America, as well as a growing number of companies based in the Research Triangle Park. Originally from Evansport, Ohio, Jes learned the ropes quickly by working in the family's real estate, auctioneering, and appraisal business. After college, she accepted a corporate role with General Electric; but it didn't take long before she started her own company, making her a 4th generation entrepreneur. Jes moved to North Carolina in 2005 devoting much of her time serving on various nonprofit boards, writing, cheering on The Ohio State Buckeyes, and globe-trotting. But without question, her greatest gift is her teenage son Tre who helps keep all things in perspective! ABOUT REINVENTION ROADMAP The truth is, whether we realize it or not, reinvention is inevitable and recurring. The question is, are you in the driver's seat or a passive bystander in the next chapter of your story. We've all been through countless moments that qualify as “reinventions.” If you were fully present in these moments, you probably became a little more grounded and began to believe in the possibility of more. The Reinvention Roadmap Course allows you to discover the next BEST version of you. The art of reinvention should be exciting and full of wonder and curiosity. The process should be fun, insightful, and full of introspection…. Reinvention is not by accident…it's by design.

In this week’s episode of “Marketing Today,” Alan talks with Scott Mueller, president at Shopchology, a shopper marketing and insights company. During the podcast, they discuss the “retail apocalypse” and challenge the popular notion that retail is dying, (hint: it’s not dying — it’s evolving), what modern retail means to both brands and retailers, and Mueller provides insight into the future of retail using real-world examples to make his point. They also talk about an article they collaborated on for Adweek that examines the ways brands can thrive in the rapidly evolving retail industry. In talking about ways brands can gain traction in that rapidly evolving landscape, Mueller outlines how authenticity is key in connecting with shoppers. “Experience, storytelling — they’re everything. They’re so important.” says Mueller. “They’ve always been important, but they’re so crucial now — to getting that mix correct, that vibe correct. Defining and animating your story — who you are and why you deserve the time, the consideration, the dollars from that shopper. And that’s important for both brands and retailers.”  Mueller goes on to add, “You can’t make it up. You can’t do it in a way that doesn’t have credibility, and it shouldn’t feel forced. It should feel natural.” Highlights from this week’s “Marketing Today” podcast include: Mueller worked on both the client side and agency side before focusing on shopper marketing. (1:21) Shifting sands: Mueller discusses how relationship between brands, retailers, and shoppers have changed over time and how shoppers are now the ones calling the shots. (3:09) Retail apocalypse? Mueller on the current state of retail. (5:12) Mueller’s take on the different ways pop-ups work and what it means for marketers and brands. (12:17) Mueller talks about the Nordstrom “service center” in Hollywood and other retail experiments. (17:48) How brands — big and small — should tap into the evolving retail landscape. (23:02) Getting married and having children have made Mueller a better marketer. (28:29) Mueller loves working with the American Underground in Durham. (31:31) Support the show.
