Sarah and her husband, Cameron, buy a house that seems too good to be true. After moving in, strange flooding and electrical issues begin to occur. They hear footsteps coming up the stairs that they can't explain. Then, a concerned neighbor calls them over and asks if they have experienced anything unusual. He informs them that the house has been vacant for 8 years and, according to Jewish folklore, places abandoned for that long are susceptible to being inhabited by Dybbuks or malevolent spirits. This is the first episode of a series about this house, the entities that inhabit it, and a series of increasingly disturbing incidents that lead to something latching onto Sarah and attempting to take control. In the first part of the 2000s, there were paranormal TV shows and movies made about the Dybbuk (or Dibbuk), an evil spirit from Judaic folklore that can possess a person. The idea of the "Dybbuk Box" that cursed its owners gained urban folktale status. However, these evil spirits are not demons, they are the restless male dead, and were not really a concept until the rise of medieval Kabbalistic Judaism, and in particular from sixteenth century stories from the city of Safed. We look at what dybbuks are, the afterlife theology surrounding them, and different scholarly ideas about dybbuk possession, especially in women. Are these evil spirits preying on the sinful, another misunderstanding of mental illness, or in the case of women, an authentic voice that has been repressed and attributed to a negative male force?

This new work from Chamber Made evokes the many ways that the dead inhabit female bodies through language, voice, memory and desire.Dybbuks is a contemporary theatre and music work created by lead artist Samara Hersch and collaborators together with three performers, a local Yiddish choir of inter-generational women and four female musicians.Part performance, part concert, part exorcism, Dybbuks combines mythic stories, traditional Yiddish songs with contemporary composition to present a feminist reimagining of S.Ansky’s iconic Dybbuk story. For more details, visit:  https://www.saltpillar.org.au/current-production Theatre First RSS feed:   https://audioboom.com/channels/4839371.rssSubscribe, rate and review Theatre First at all good podcatcher apps, including Apple Podcasts (formerly iTunes), Stitcher, Pocket Casts, audioBoom, CastBox.FM, Podbean etc.If you're enjoying Theatre First podcast, please share and tell your friends. Gather round, children -- it’s time for a spooky episode of Learnt Up! Lorraine tells us all about zombies -- tracking their roots in Haiti and West Africa, connection to voodoo, and superstitions among slaves. Did you know that being a walking corpse is a fate worse than death? Btw, stay away from Devil’s Weed and toads, y’all. Sarah gets learnt on the Golem and dybbuks and tells the haunting story of the Dybbuk Box (a super real series of events that definitely happened because ghosts exist).

Hello and welcome to episode twenty-eight of Prose.   This week, analyze the importance of opening doors, encounter a mythic peeping Tom reborn, and learn how to live with a not-so-benevolent spirit clinging to you.                                                                                                         After having celebrated Prose's six month anniversary this past Wednesday, we have three more surprises for you this week!  We have new stories from popular guest authors Nicholas B. Morris and Alena Abrosimova, and we have the first story that was co-narrated, co-edited, co-produced, well, co-everythinged by my young protégé for the week Abigail Lambert.   If any listeners fancy themselves authors and would like to contribute to the podcast, please email me possible submissions at prosepodcast@gmail.com. Moreover, feel free to send anything you might want to say, be it praise, critique, advice, or simply saying hello.  You can also keep up with or communicate with the podcast by going to prosepodcast.com or following Prose on Twitter through @prosepodcast or on Facebook under the same handle, though Twitter is the far more active of the two.   Head on over to iTunes and leave a rating and/or review for Prose.  These ratings and reviews help your friends and others find the podcast, and they ensure it can continue ever-forward.   Thank you for making Prose part of your day.  Let's get to the pieces, shall we?   This week, we have “Open the Door” by Alena Abrosimova, “Summer Hunt: After Ovid” by Nicholas B. Morris, and “Dybbuks (דיבוק מרוח רעה ) and You: A Practical How-To Guide.”     Enjoy!

In this week’s show we discuss mysticism with Jason Haxton the owner of the dybbuk box; a wine box surrounded by mysterious events. This item first appeared on eBay and became popular in the 2012 Hollywood blockbuster “The Possession.” Mr. Haxton has been featured on many shows dealing with the supernatural for the SyFy channel, The Travel Channel and The History Channel. When I first heard about the movie I was afraid that Jewish folklore was being exploited for cheap thrills. I saw the movie and was impressed with it since it appeared to be a respectful take on the Jewish understanding of demonology. Mr. Haxton is the Director of the Museum of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri, a scientist by profession he first encountered the supernatural when he obtained the box. We spoke about the physical ailments, natural phenomena he experienced and how the idea of the box is similar to concept to the genie in a bottle or Jinn in Middle Eastern culture. The contents of the box are the following: 4 stones from pillars where shalom is written, it contained two 1920s pennies, a lock of blonde hair bound with cord, a lock of black/brown hair bound with cord, one dried rose bud, a single candle holder with four octopus-shaped legs, and a small golden wine goblet. Many rational Jewish scholars feel that superstition is a remnant of more ancient animistic ideas which do not belong in Traditional Judaism. However, there is a strong trend in both Kabbalah and the Hasidic community of Eastern Europe of spiritual possession. In that tradition a dybbuk is the soul of a deceased individual who possesses another person and can only be released through an act of takanah (repair) to continue its gilgul (transmigration) to another life. According to Rabbi Geoffrey W. Dennis who wrote The Encyclopedia of Jewish Myth, Magic, and Mysticism. “Dybbuks are a form of spirit possession, not, as demonic possession… In Jewish tradition dybbukim do not possess “innocent” or “pure” souls, but invade those whose lives have made them vulnerable to such infestations through sin and lax observance of the Jewish faith.” The process of Jewish exorcism involves a minyan(quorum of ten men) and any Jewish person who has the knowledge to perform the rituals such as rabbis, local holy men or the educated. The ritual involves reciting the following Psalms: 91 the “Psalm of Affliction,” along with 16 and 121 to neutralize the spirit. Other objects associated with this process are prayer shawls and rams horns.
