Good soil practices are paying financial dividends for farmers in some states in the upper Midwest, and Wisconsin may soon join in.  Bob Bosold talks to Jack Cornell with the United Soybean Board about Farmers for Soil Health.  He explains their model and the companies that are already buying in, literally.Even small plots of ground can be incredibly productive.  Pam Jahnke visits with Sarah Bressler, farm manager for the Hunger Task Force's 208 acre property in Franklin, WI.  It's land leased for 30 years in partnership with Milwaukee County.  Bressler said they produced a record 411,000 pounds of fresh vegetables and produce they'll distribute to food pantries. Affordable health care is major talking point at a lot of state conventions and conferences this winter.  Stephanie Hoff gets real-life perspective from a farm couple in western Wisconsin.  Dylan Bruce from Ferryville. CONS: Wood chips will take nitrogen from the soil if mixed into the soil leaving plants with nitrogen deficiencies, hardy weeds will still find a way to grow, so weeding is still something that has to be done, moving wood chips can be labor-intensive and tiring. A: Yes they will grow but will not put on a bulb or a very small one at best. Onions are in 3 categories: long day short day mid day. Long for the north, short for the south and midday for the middle of the country all based on daylight length during the summer. Q: I am( located outside Boston Ma. I have a small vegetable garden(10ft x 20ft). I put in 4 inches or so of composted cow manure every fall. My question is in regards to wood ash. I normally generate 2 to 3 five gallon buckets over the winter from my wood stove. I dump this in the garden and it really has seemed to supercharge the plant growth. I usually put it on in the spring just before a rain storm so it gets washed into the soil. But I have also read that I need to be careful and not use too much. So the question is how much should I use? I also have border gardens with Iris and various herbs and spices. Can I put it there as well? How about my lawn? Thanks for your help. A: You want to add about 3 pounds per 1000 sq feet every 4 weeks. It's water soluble so if you feel like you've added too much, steady watering can help rinse it through. You can also add it to your iris and herbs. You can certainly sprinkle it on your lawn as well. Q: Does the wind blow the shredded paper out of the garden when you use it as a mulch? A: it really doesn't. Maybe a few pieces, but nothing measurable. You could also wet it down and that will help keep it more in place Q: How would you keep indoor containers warm? Would the best method be to lay some mulch on top of the soil – thank you A:  If you are in a non climate control area garage, basement you have a few options. About Dylan Bruce: Dylan was born in Vancouver, Canada on April 21, 1980, and raised in both Vancouver and Seattle, Washington.  He is known for his roles in Orphan Black and Arrow and has appeared in many television shows including the mini-series 24: Conspiracy, The Sopranos, CSI: NY and daytime drama As the World Turns.  He made his official film debut with the fast-paced action outing Unstoppable, which stars veteran actor Denzel Washington and Chris Pine. Dylan Bruce now stars as Bobo Winthrop in the new NBC series “Midnight, Texas”

Butler) and star Rachel Wilson. Here’s some info on the movie: You can never go home again, particularly if you’re a former local legend gone bad. “First Round Down,” an offbeat new film starring “Orphan Black’s” Dylan Bruce is a story of hockey, hitmen and hometown expectations. Split into three sections—or periods—Bruce plays Hamilton, Ontario’s Tim Tucker, a junior hockey star and prodigy on and off the ice. When an injury ends his NHL dreams he goes off the grid, disappearing, leaving behind his pregnant girlfriend Kelly Quinn (“The Republic Of Doyle’s” Rachel Wilson) and all traces of the life he once knew. After ten years of doing wet work as a Montreal mob enforcer he returns home after his parents pass away to look after his younger brother and get his life back on track. “Winning has been harder to come by since you haven’t been around,” says his old coach. “Winning has been harder since hockey hasn’t been around,” comes Tim’s rueful reply. A job as a pizza delivery driver is less than satisfying—customers who don’t tip bring out his bad side—so before long he takes on the proverbial one last job to make money to look after his brother and possibly woo Kelly. A Cancon soundtrack—heavy on Junkhouse, Sloan, The Northern Pikes and Triumph—fuels the action. “First Round Down” is working class Tarantino, a scrappy crime story that proudly wears its low budget status on its sleeve, wisely investing in story and characters instead of oversized set pieces. Bruce, Quinn and John Kapelos (playing a mob boss) keep things lively but it is the filmmaking that impresses. Full of energy, it’s a grubby popcorn flick with the spirit of a hockey fight.

Rachel Wilson, who stars opposite Dylan Bruce and Kristian Bruun in First Round Down (opening theatrically in Toronto this Friday), shares her love for James L. Brooks’ Oscar-winning 1983 dramedy Terms of Endearment. You know the one. Your genial host Norm Wilner promises to keep it together.

Next week there shall be a co-host! He discusses the demise of The Podcast Arena at New York Comic Con this year and mourns/gives tribute to one of his idols Robin Williams. Jimmy sat in the roundtables for the hit BBC America show Orphan Black and chatted with stars and producers Tatiana Maslany, Jordan Gavaris, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Ari Millen, Dylan Bruce, Kristian Bruun, Graeme Manson, and John Fawcet. The roundtables were brief as they had to rush off to their panel but we got some good questions in. Apologies for the annoying/unprofessional reporter from HGTV whom manipulated the tables with her inane questions and often interrupted talent to chat with them. Besides that, and while brief, we still managed to get some exciting news about the upcoming season! Jimmy also chatted with amazing cartoonist Gene Luen Yang about his new graphic novel The Shadow Hero and some of his awesome past comic work. Furious, Mathis kidnaps Laurel (Katie Cassidy) in retaliation and plans to murder her while Lance watches. Meanwhile, Thea (Willa Holland) and Oliver are stunned when District Attorney Adam Donner (guest star Dylan Bruce) seeks the death penalty for Moira (Susanna Thompson). Oliver asks Roy (Colton Haynes) to help him find the Canary (Caity Lotz).
