Andrew and Scotty go to a cabin in the woods to kick their coffee addictions and read from a cute little book they find in the basement as they discuss 2013's "Evil Dead". They also talk about a couple of fun Beyond fest screenings, a fly invasion, and they read a new review. And at the end of the end of the episode, they announce their next movie!"Evil Dead" was directed by Fede Alvarez. In this remake that some consider a sequel, a group of friends and family accompany Mia to an isolated cabin in the woods, where they plan to help her kick her heroin addiction. Things get weird when they find a basement full of dead cats, along with a book wrapped in black plastic and barbed wire. Everything will probably be fine, though.Feel free to send us a message! Tape #1: People are gonna want to know how it all went down. Jacob and Matt kick off their debut season with a deep dive into Matt Reeves' monster movie homage. Jacob attempts to recap a TV show he's never seen. Matt defends the integrity of tie-in manga. Both spiral into an ARG-induced stupor. Additionally, we interrogate the mind of J.J. Abrams. Does the found footage format prove to be a lucky charm or does this Clover leave audiences too nauseated to focus? We talk about the incredible practical effects, themes of addiction and family, and the over-arching aspects of the monstrous-feminine and the wicked-wilderness that make this the perfect movie for a Wicked Wild / Plug It Up crossover. We really love this one, and we have a great time laughing together. The film stars Bruce Campbell, Ellen Sandweiss, Richard DeManincor, Betsy Baker, and Theresa Tilly. The story focuses on five college students vacationing in an isolated cabin in a remote wooded area. After they find an audio tape that, when played, releases a legion of demons and spirits, four members of the group suffer from demonic possession, forcing the fifth member, Ash Williams (Campbell), to survive an onslaught of increasingly gory mayhem. Raimi, producer Robert G. Tapert, Campbell, and their friends produced the short film Within the Woods as a proof of concept to build the interest of potential investors, which secured US$90,000 to begin work on The Evil Dead. Principal photography took place on location in a remote cabin located in Morristown, Tennessee, in a difficult filming process that proved extremely uncomfortable for the cast and crew; the film's extensive prosthetic makeup effects and stop-motion animations were created by artist Tom Sullivan. The completed film attracted the interest of producer Irvin Shapiro, who helped screen the film at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival. Horror author Stephen King gave a rave review of the film, which resulted in New Line Cinema acquiring its distribution rights. The Evil Dead grossed $2.4 million in the United States and between $2.7 and $29.4 million worldwide. The Evil Dead spawned a media franchise, beginning with two direct sequels written and directed by Raimi, Evil Dead II (1987) and Army of Darkness (1992), a fourth film, Evil Dead (2013), which serves as a soft reboot and continuation, a follow-up television series, Ash vs Evil Dead, which aired from 2015 to 2018, and a fifth film, Evil Dead Rise (2023); the franchise also includes video games and comic books. The film's protagonist Ash Williams is considered to be a cultural icon. Evil Dead is a 2013 American supernatural horror film directed by Fede Álvarez (in his feature directorial debut), who co-wrote the screenplay with Rodo Sayagues. Dubbed a "re-imagining" of The Evil Dead (1981), the film is the fourth installment in the Evil Dead film series. It stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas, and Elizabeth Blackmore. The story follows a group of five people under attack by deadites in a remote cabin in the woods. Evil Dead had its premiere at South by Southwest on March 8, 2013, and was released in the United States on April 5, by Sony Pictures Releasing. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and grossed $97 million worldwide against a production budget of $17 million. A fifth installment, titled Evil Dead Rise, was released by Warner Bros. Pictures on April 21, 2023. #evildead #samraimi #scarymovie #evildeadrise #horror #movie #death #horrorfilm #splatter #deathscene #blood #gore #scarymovie #horror #completeguidetohorror #horrormovie #scary #creepy #graphic

Even if you've never seen Cloverfield (2008), you probably remember the splash it made when trailers first hit theaters. From the very first teaser, audiences were speculating about exactly what kind of monster movie it might be — and just how many monsters would appear. A decade and a half later, conspiracy theories still abound, but the real question here at Spooky Tuesday is this: Does this found footage flick hold up? On our latest episode, we're joined by Keep It Weird's Lauren Ogle as she helps us unpack all those ideas, examine our own issues with the film, and discuss one eeny-weeny tiny-winy essential lil detail that can be missed in the blink of an eye.Follow Keep It Weird on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok. Mark Horst, owner of King Solar in Yoder, Michelle Milburn, of Stanion Wholesale Electric, and Jessica Lucas, lobbyist for the Clean Energy Business Council, say Kansas should end the utility monopoly on power purchase agreements with businesses, churches, schools and others who want electricity from solar systems on their property but lack investment capital to build. Opening the market, they say, would allow developers to construct facilities and deliver power at lower rates.
Aaron and Josh Sarnecky return in a new year to talk about Cloverfield, celebrating its 15th anniversary. Cloverfield is a found footage monster movie directed by Matt Reeves and written by Drew Goddard. It opened in theaters on January 18, 2008. The film follows Rob Hawkins (Michael Stahl-David), along with his friends and family (Odette Yustman, T.J. Miller, Lizzy Caplan, Jessica Lucas, and Mike Vogel). During Rob's farewell party, a giant monster starts destroying Manhattan. The incident is shown via camcorder footage. Cloverfield garnered a mostly positive reception. Renowned French film magazine Cahiers du Cinéma named it the third best film of 2008. The movie grossed $172 million on a $25 million budget. Josh and Aaron discuss the plot, camerawork, and monster. They also chat about the found footage genre's potential. For more January movies, you can listen to Josh and Aaron's podcasts on Snow Dogs and The Green Hornet. Cloverfield is available on Pluto TV and Prime Video. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

We're into the final week of evidence in the Depp v Heard trial at Fairfax County Court in Virginia. No Johnny Depp on the stand today as was expected, but Nick runs through the witnesses who were called, including one expert witness who Nick describes as "One of the most extraordinary spectacles" not just of this trial but any he's witnessed. Plus there's a Fairfax County Park Bench interview with Dan the Amber Heard fan, and Input Mag journalist Jessica Lucas is on the remote park bench. This week we're joined by Jessica Lucas from Input Magazine, to discuss the "Will White" fandom, something that does actually exist, and apparently consists on various Moms on TikTok going to war with each other. We talk about contemporary fandom, how to understand what it is, and fandom as a form of expression and social relations, rather than one of veneration and support. Plus, we discuss Pick Up Artists on Twitter, and their new strategy of Twitter Roleplay to market their products. -------- Read Jessica's article here: https://www.inputmag.com/culture/will-white-tiktok-fandom-gen-x-middle-age-women-drama

A story crossed my desk recently: "Inside TikTok's booming dissociative identity disorder community" (Input Magazine, July 6). The author, Jessica Lucas, looks at the unique world of social media influencers with multiple personalities. While it provides a unique look at a fascinating subculture, it does not portray the truth about Dissociative Identity Disorder (the clinical name for multiple personalities) and how the diagnosis has been abused by therapists over the years. Not only are these conspiracy therapists harming patients, they are a telling example of America's decline. You can find my response/rebuttal, "Return of the Conspiracy Therapists," in the Failed State Update newsletter. For the report I interviewed Lucien Greaves, the co-founder of the Satanic Temple, and the conversation was good enough that I'm releasing it here as a podcast. This episode is a conversation I had with Jessica of Bloc & Mane (https://www.blocandmane.com/) during the first week of Ontario’s April lockdown. We talk a lot about how small service businesses have been impacted by covid and how they’ve innovated into things like e-commerce and DIY as a means of keeping the brand connected during a time when face to face business is impossible. We talk about the different challenges businesses faced, as well as how federal and provincial support mechanisms did or didn’t work for certain businesses – especially startups. Overall, I was wholeheartedly impressed by this business story of resiliency and innovation, and I hope it brings as much perspective to you as it did to me. Please recommend businesses & entrepreneurs you’d like to hear from here: www.dfoch.ca Housekeeping: 1. Thank you for your patience in dealing with the delayed start of this season… I was in the process of onboarding a sponsor. This is a series I’ve been wanting to do for a while but couldn’t quite muster up the resources to contact and schedule with local businesses at scale… About 3 weeks ago I reposted a hilarious Austin Powers meme video and it was shared by tens of thousands of local businesspeople, and it felt like something between serendipity and fate that presented me with the opportunity to connect with these guests. 2. This Season of the podcast is sponsored by PopPup.shop. Their logo is literally a puppy holding a balloon, which is adorable. PopPup is a business that describes themselves as “short-term retail” which is basically a marriage between Airbnb and commercial leasing. Their goal is to play a role in the renewal of Ontario commercial real estate in a post-pandemic economy by removing the barrier to entry for businesses and simultaneously helping landlords to mitigate the impact of vacancies. I’ve been invited to beta-test their platform prior to its launch after Ontario lockdowns. PopPup has also invited any of my guests and listeners to join in their beta phase – you can learn more at their website poppup.shop which will be linked in the show notes on the Podcast & YouTube. 3. If you know anyone who runs a local business that’s been impacted by covid in any way, positively or negatively, I’d love to hear from you. I am virtually unlimited in number of conversations I’m willing to have about this topic, and I’d like to explore the topic exhaustively before I move on. So… if there’s any entrepreneurial guests you’d like to hear on the podcast – please reach out to me and make an introduction or a request, and I’ll do my best to feature them on the localling season.
Final week in possession month leads us to a very unimpressive movie - Evil Dead remake. We discuss the science of how water + sugar = blood, cat worms making you a zombie demon, how long you have to bury someone before they’re exorcised, and how David just straight up SUCKS. Mostly, we just think this movie was made (at least in part) as a personal revenge fantasy against some teacher called Eric. Be sure to rate and subscribe or we’ll defib you. "Remember, inside every girl there's a boy." Some deep wisdom from "She's the Man." It's the fully fluff Amanda Bynes vehicle that was way better than it probably should have been. She really goes for it in this movie and it pays off. Is she winning awards for it? No. Did we laugh? Totally. We paired it with Gentleman's Collection 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon. Movie Sync Notes: We watched the movie on Amazon Prime. As of publishing it's available for free on HBO Max We start "She's the Man" 7:11 into the pod, and push play on part two 1:08:01 into the pod.

This week, the Brides pop in Sclera lenses, load up on Karo syrup, and open the Necronomicon in our gleeful recap of Sam Raimi's beloved demonic gorefest The Evil Dead. We discuss the brilliance of Bruce Campbell, the sheer nightmare that was this film's production, and how Raimi's background as a magician helped him pioneer some of the coolest looking shots in horror film history. We also touch on the history of the film as a "video nasty" and discuss the very good and very gross 2013 remake. Stay tuned at the end of the episode for a blooper, in which you'll find out what Lindsay and Alysa were like at nineteen. Spoiler: They were nerds. As stated at the beginning, this episode contains discussion of sexual assault, due to our coverage of the infamous (and, in the Brides' opinions, entirely unnecessary) 'tree scene' in both films. Take care of yourselves and skip if you need to! The Evil Dead (1983). Directed by Sam Raimi, produced by Rob Tapert. Welcome to Everything Trying to Kill You, the comedy podcast that talks about horror movies! In episode 65 about Cloverfield, your hosts Mary Kay, Rachel, and Mary answer important questions like these:DID YOU BUY MARY KAY'S BOOK, YOU SONS OF BITCHES? Why is this somehow even harder to swallow than the fuckery that is Cabin in the Woods? Who is the hottest person Mary Kay has ever seen in real life? What would be the absolute worst garb to be stuck wearing in an apocalyptic scenario? How does one get taken seriously in the apocalypse? Can you imagine trying to survive the apocalypse with a UTI? Would you chase your friend while they chase someone they aren't boning? Do you agree that Nate is the hottest one, like, could he pick us up? How do you cope when your reality goes tits-up instantaneously and there's no information to be had? What scared you more: walking subway tracks, or exploding humans? Can we work Schrödinger's Cat into casual conversation? Where was everyone running to? Where the hell were they all running from, even? Do you think Sephora was a sponsor for this movie? How many times did Hud turn off the camera? What is the least disappointing monster of all time? Could you even make this movie today, or would the premise fall apart thanks to iPhones? Do you remember the hype that was created from the trailer; you know, the one where it's just a party and then suddenly the city is attacked and everyone is as confused as you are?? Did JJ Abrams walk so Netflix could run? Was the monster just a baby shot down to Earth and just flailing in terrified fright? So, then, is this movie basically Dragon Ball Z? Speaking of geeky references, can you guess which character is basically a walking videogame? Or which character is basically every young adult fiction side character? There's a twist. Who's going to survive the apocalypse: able-bodied men or a woman in heels? Can we get Lizzy Caplan to be our friend? How many Tik-Tok references can we make? How many comedians named Jenny do we support? How did they achieve that shot when they are crawling in the topsy turvy hallway? How big is the real head of the Statue of Liberty? Most importantly, what would be the most embarrassing thing for you to have taped over in this circumstance? When the government is watching this footage of what happened that night with the aliens, what totally embarrassing footage of yours is breaking through?Cloverfield (2008)– Directed by Matt Reeves. MOVIE REVIEW: It's May 22nd, 2008, and Rob's friends are throwing him a party. He just received a huge promotion, and soon he'll be in Japan far away from New York's troubles and woes. But sooner, rather than later, it seems everything's been put on hold when an explosion shakes Manhattan island from north to south. Things only get worse when Rob and his friends learn there's a giant monster rampaging down central park. Something about Cloverfield has kept the attention of fans for years. Maybe it's the found-footage film-making, maybe it's the never-ending questions that parade its audience from start to finish, or maybe people just like giant monster movies. Whatever the case, it's here to stay, and I couldn't help myself from rewatching this modern classic kaiju film for the podcast! Tune in Wednesday nights for new episodes of Cinematic Doctrine! Cloverfield is Rated PG-13 for violence, terror and disturbing images. It features Michael Stahl-David, Jessica Lucas, Lizzy Caplan, and T.J. Miller. Directed by Matt Reeves. It's a milestone week for us! We're celebrating 200 EPISODES with a couple of great guests! First, comic book writer, editor and comics historian Hope Nicholson. She talks about her successful Kickstarter projects (like The Secret Love of Geeks), the state of the comic book industry and even finding love on Valentine's Day! We close the show talking to Jessica Lucas, who plays Tabitha Galavan on Gotham. How does she feel about the formation of the Sirens? What is her status with Butch after that emotional scene? She even gives us a tease of what's to come when Gotham returns on March 1st. If that wasn't enough we have a TON of big trailers to talk about, including Solo, Venom, Deadpool 2 and much more. We also tackle the latest Star Wars news, Conan coming to TV and much more. To find out more about this and past episodes, go to www.downandnerdypodcast.com

Guest speaker: Terence McKenna PROGRAM NOTES: [NOTE: All quotations are by Terence McKenna.] "It seemed probable to me that this phenomenon encountered in deep psychedelic experiences with psilocybin actually has a potential historical impact. It is a kind of human ability, which is at present submerged in the psyche, contactable only by the shamanic means of journeying into historical hyperspace. In other words, of going into that place where the adumbrations of the future are intense enough that you can have an intimation, at least, of what is to come.” “I think the gradual evolution of language is actually the gradual lifting of the veil that is imposed between ourselves and meaning by the planetary ecology. In other words, the forward thrust of history is actually regulated by the ecology, and it is regulated through control of the evolution of language. Because what you cannot think you cannot do, and where you cannot imagine you cannot steer your culture and go. So I'm proposing on one level that hallucinogens be thought of as social pheromones that regulate the rate at which language develops and therefore regulates the evolution of human culture generally.” “Tribalism is a social form which can exist at any level of technology. It's a complete illusion to associate it with low levels of technology. It is probably, in fact, a form of social organization second only to the family in its ability to endure.” “This is what magic is. It's being able to speak in a voice which makes things happen, being able to speak in a voice which causes facts to be beheld by groups of people in a way that has been purged from profane language, for us relegated to poetry and that sort of thing.” “The history of man that you don't know is what your unconscious is made out of. Just as the history of yourself that you don't know is what your personal unconscious is made out of.” “Knowledge, or verbal facility, is no proof that you know what you're talking about.” Download MP3 PCs – Right click, select option Macs – Ctrl-Click, select option Women's Visionary Congress Consciousness, Healing, and Social Justice The Women's Visionary Congress (WVC) is an annual gathering of visionary women healers, scholars, activists and artists who study consciousness and altered states.
