On this, the 69th anniversary of the passing of a great radio humorist, we present the NBC program Biography in Sound,  This episode was broadcast two days prior to what would have been his 62nd birthday, May 29, 1956.  Ironically that was just 10 days following my birth.  And yes, I chose this picture because of another irony.  Until I graduated college, I played the tuba.  Here's a partial list of those apart of Fred that you will hear in this 55 minute program.Kenny Delmar, Tallulah Bankhead, Doc Rockwell, Jack Benny, Herman Wouk, Jim Harkins, Francis Spellman, Donald Voorhees, Peter Donald, Bill Mullen, James Mason, Jimmy Durante, Goodman Ace, Henry Tugan, Joe DeGray, Mike Jakes, Minerva Pious, Jack Haley, Ed Herlihy, Edgar Bergen, Herb Shriner, Benny Droan, Clifton Webb, George Jessel, John Royal, Roger White, Pat Weaver, Harry Von Zell, John Crosby, Stanley Trablinsky, Morton Green, George Foster, Su Chan, Max Asgur, Alan Reed, and Parker Fennelly.  Each paying tribute with remembrances of Fred Allen. And yes, writer Earl Hamner wrote much of the continuity of this program.  The same Earl Hamner who created The Waltons and Falcon Crest.  One more amazing talent who influenced so many more.  May he rest in peace and know that even today, he is remembered for all the laughs he gave all of us.

He also created the 80s TV nighttime soap Falcon Crest!) In between, he wrote the 1961 novel Spencer's Mountain, which became a movie starring Henry Fonda and Maureen O'Hara as Clay and Olivia Spencer. Earl Hamner created and wrote such novels as Spenser's Mountain (which became a major movie), and "The Walton's" which was also a best-seller before becoming the long-running network television series, which continues to air in syndication throughout the world.I also get into some of my personal battles with American Airlines and the lack of "Customer Service" we all face nowadays!  It simply does NOT exist!Earl wrote me just weeks before he died of cancer, which I wanted to share with you.  I still miss him.

Book Vs Movie: “The Homecoming: A Christmas Story” (1971) The Basis of the Waltons TV Series Started as a TV Movie! The Margos decided to get into the Depression-era holiday spirit with a look at “The Homecoming: A Christmas Story” which was written by author & creator of The Waltons TV series--Earl Hamner, Jr.  Hamner has a fascinating career as a writer with several scripts of “The Twilight Zone” including the famous The Bewitchin’ Pool, (the very last episode of the original American series.) He also created 80s TV nighttime soap, Falcon Crest!) In between, he wrote the 1961 novel Spencer’s Mountain which became a movie starring Henry Fonda and Maureen O’Hara as Clay and Olivia Spencer. They play a couple living in the Grand Teton Mountains in Wyoming and their eldest son “Clay-Boy” is set to become the first in his family to go to college.  Ten years later he wrote, “The Homecoming” which told a similar story with a twist--the Walton family was based in the Blue Ridge mountains during the depression. The TV movie was on December 19, 1971, in the U.S. and was such a big hit--it was immediately turned into a TV series.  Hamner narrated every episode which ran for almost ten years and started the phrase “goodnight John-Boy!”  In this episode, the Margos talk about the author, his original novella, the 1971 TV movie, and try to decide which we like better. Have a listen! In this ep the Margos discuss: The interesting life of Earl Hamner, Jr. The casting of Patricia Neal as Olivia Walton and why she was not hired for the series The major differences between the movie and novella The cast: Patricia Neal (Olivia Walton,) Richard Thomas (John-Boy Walton,) Edgar Bergen (Grandpa Walton,) Dorothy Stickney (Grandma Walton, ) Cleavon Little (Hawthorne Dooley,) Andrew Duggan (Big John Walton,) and Judy Norton (Mary Ellen Walton.)  Clips used: The Homecoming  trailer  An early ad for The Homecoming Olivia Walton is suspicious of John-Boy Earl Hamner, Jr opening scene narration Join our Patreon page to help support the show! https://www.patreon.com/bookversusmovie  Book Vs. Corbin began his career as a Shakespearean actor in the 1960s, but today he is more likely to be seen in the role of the local sheriff, military leader, or some other authority figure, though on occasion, he has effectively portrayed murderous villains, as well. To moviegoers, he is well remembered as General Beringer in WarGames, John Travolta's uncle Bob Davis in Urban Cowboy, co-starring with Clint Eastwood in Any Which Way You Can, or Roscoe Brown, July Johnson's bumbling deputy in the acclaimed Western Lonesome Dove. In 1983–1984, Corbin played Merit Sawyer in the NBC television series Boone. Corbin's role was that of a stern father to the young actor Tom Byrd, who played Boone Sawyer, an aspiring singer. The program was set in rural Tennessee during the 1950s and was created by Earl Hamner, who had great success earlier with CBS's The Waltons. In 1994, Corbin narrated the acclaimed TBS documentary MoonShot, telling the story of the 1960s space race from the first-person viewpoint of Mercury Seven astronaut Deke Slayton. In 2007, he played the character Clay Johnson, father of Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson on The Closer series.[5] In 2003, Corbin co-starred with Northern Exposure castmate John Cullum in Blackwater Elegy, an award-winning short film written by Matthew Porter and co-directed by Porter and Joe O'Brien. From 2003–2008, Corbin played Whitey Durham, the basketball coach for the Tree Hill Ravens on The WB/CW teenager drama series One Tree Hill.[5] He also had a role in 2007's Oscar-winning film No Country for Old Men.In 2014, Corbin worked with Tracey Birdsall[7] on Dawn of the Crescent Moon,[8] followed by working alongside her for the science fiction films At the Edge of Time (2016)[9] and The Time War (2017).[10]In 2020, Corbin had a recurring guest role as Everett Acker in Better Call Saul.

This week on StoryWeb: Earl Hamner, Jr.’s television series “The Waltons.” When I was growing up, I wanted to either marry John-Boy Walton or be John-Boy Walton. Mostly, I wanted to be him, wanted to write stories of my family. Loving “The Waltons” as I do, I was sad to learn that Earl Hamner, Jr., died last Thursday at the age of 92. Hamner, of course, was the original John-Boy Walton and the creator of the hit television series based on his experiences growing up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. A novelist, television writer, and screenplay writer, Hamner was behind many well-known TV shows and movies. He wrote episodes of “The Twilight Zone” and wrote the screenplays for Charlotte’s Web, Heidi, and Where the Lilies Bloom. After “The Waltons,” he developed the long-running, prime-time soap opera “Falcon Crest.” “The Waltons” grew out of a television special titled “The Homecoming: A Christmas Story,” which was based on Hamner’s 1961 novel, Spencer’s Mountain. The television special did so well that CBS decided to develop the special movie into what became an extremely successful series. It ran from 1972 (when I was 12) to 1981. I’ll admit that by the time I was 21, I had lost interest in “The Waltons,” and as it grew further afield from its origins, I suspect other Americans had lost some of their interest in the program as well. It’s those first few seasons – set in Appalachia during the Great Depression – that I recall so well. Though Hamner wrote only a few episodes, he continued to be involved as a creative director for the series, and he recorded the voice-over narration at the beginning and end of each episode. Is the series based on Hamner’s real life? Many viewers have asked that question. Born in 1923, Hamner was the oldest of eight children, rather than the seven children featured on the television show. The family lived in Schuyler, Virginia, but the television family lived on Walton’s Mountain. I traveled to Schuyler 25 years ago, and indeed there were parts of the small town that felt familiar. But the television show took liberties. The Hamners did not live in a house far from its neighbors but rather lived in a house right in town. If you want to see it yourself, you can take a virtual video tour of their home! Hamner’s father – Earl Hamner, Sr. – worked for a soapstone company, while the father in the television series owns his own lumbering operation. Hamner’s mother was descended from Italian immigrants, while Olivia Walton is very much of Anglo-Saxon stock. Despite these differences, the series stayed close to the spirit of Hamner’s experiences growing up in the close-knit family. Ready to revisit “The Waltons” yourself? If you’re dying to remember a particular episode, you’ll love the Wikipedia page that includes a synopsis of every single show – and you can buy DVD sets of each season. If you want to learn more about the man behind the scenes, you can watch a 4.5-minute trailer for Earl Hamner: Storyteller, a film available on DVD. Other trailers and sneak peeks for the documentary are also available. The last week has seen plenty of obituaries for Hamner. The official Earl Hamner, Jr., website features one by Hamner’s friend James Person. It includes the following narration, which bookended one episode of “The Waltons”: Some men are drawn to oceans, they cannot breathe unless the air is scented with a salty mist. Others are drawn to land that is flat, and the air is sullen and is leaden as August. My people were drawn to mountains. They came when the country was young and they settled in the upland country of Virginia that is still misted with a haze of blue which gives those mountains their name. . . . In my time, I have come to know them. . . . I have walked the land in the footsteps of all my fathers. I saw yesterday and now look to tomorrow. Though I’m sad to see Earl Hamner go, I’m happy to say that he and his character John-Boy Walton ended up being true role models for me. I ended up becoming a writer, telling tales of my family. And like John-Boy, I can most frequently be found with a notebook, penning my stories. Thanks, Earl, thanks John-Boy, for the inspiration. Visit thestoryweb.com/hamner for links to all these resources and to access numerous video treats related to Hamner and “The Waltons.” In one clip, Hamner answers the question “Am I John-Boy?” There’s also a four-hour oral interview with Hamner on the Archive of American Television website. And finally, there’s just no substitute for watching “The Waltons.” On StoryWeb, you’ll find a link to a clip from a 1975 episode in which John-Boy and Grandpa have a heart-to-heart up on the mountain. I join the Washington Post in saying, “Good night, John-Boy. Good night, Earl Hamner, Jr.”
