He was one of the Mercury Seven astronauts selected for NASA's Project Mercury in April 1959. Carpenter was the second American (after John Glenn) to orbit the Earth and the fourth American in space, after Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, and John Glenn.Commissioned into the U. S. Navy in 1949, Carpenter became a naval aviator, flying a Lockheed P-2 Neptune with Patrol Squadron 6 (VP-6) on reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare missions along the coasts of the Soviet Union and China during the Korean War and the Cold War. In 1954, he attended the U. S. Naval Test Pilot School at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland, and became a test pilot. In 1958, he was named Air Intelligence Officer of USS Hornet, which was then in dry dock at the Bremerton Navy Yard.The following year, Carpenter was selected as one of the Mercury Seven astronauts. He was backup to Glenn during the latter's Mercury Atlas 6 orbital mission. Carpenter flew the next mission, Mercury Atlas 7, in the spacecraft he named Aurora 7. Due to a series of malfunctions, the spacecraft landed 250 miles (400 km) downrange from its intended splashdown point, but both pilot and spacecraft were retrieved.In 1964, Carpenter obtained permission from NASA to take a leave of absence to join the U. S. Navy SEALAB project as an aquanaut. During training he suffered injuries that grounded him, making him unavailable for further spaceflights. In 1965, he spent 28 days living on the ocean floor off the coast of California as part of SEALAB II. He returned to NASA as Executive Assistant to the Director of the Manned Spacecraft Center, then joined the Navy's Deep Submergence Systems Project in 1967 as Director of Aquanaut Operations for SEALAB III. He retired from NASA in 1967 and the Navy in 1969, with the rank of commander.Carpenter became a consultant to sport and diving manufacturers, and to the film industry on space flight and oceanography. He gave talks and appeared in television documentaries. He was involved in projects related to biological pest control and waste disposal, and for the production of energy from industrial and agricultural wastes. Senator from Ohio; in 1998, he flew into space again at the age of 77.Before joining NASA, Glenn was a distinguished fighter pilot in World War II, the Chinese Civil War and the Korean War. He shot down three MiG-15s, and was awarded six Distinguished Flying Crosses and eighteen Air Medals. In 1957, he made the first supersonic transcontinental flight across the United States. His on-board camera took the first continuous, panoramic photograph of the United States.He was one of the Mercury Seven, military test pilots selected in 1959 by NASA as the nation's first astronauts. On February 20, 1962, Glenn flew the Friendship 7 mission, becoming the first American to orbit the Earth, the third American and fifth person in history to be in space. He received the NASA Distinguished Service Medal in 1962, the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1978, was inducted into the U. S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1990, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.Glenn resigned from NASA in January 1964. A member of the Democratic Party, Glenn was first elected to the Senate in 1974 and served for 24 years, until January 1999. In 1961, he became the second person and the first American to travel into space and, in 1971, he became the fifth and oldest person to walk on the Moon, at age 47.A graduate of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Shepard saw action with the surface navy during World War II. He became a naval aviator in 1947, and a test pilot in 1950. He was selected as one of the original NASA Mercury Seven astronauts in 1959, and in May 1961 he made the first crewed Project Mercury flight, Mercury-Redstone 3, in a spacecraft he named Freedom 7. His craft entered space, but was not capable of achieving orbit. He became the second person, and the first American, to travel into space. In the final stages of Project Mercury, Shepard was scheduled to pilot the Mercury-Atlas 10 (MA-10), which was planned as a three-day mission. He named Mercury Spacecraft 15B Freedom 7 II in honor of his first spacecraft, but the mission was canceled.Shepard was designated as the commander of the first crewed Project Gemini mission, but was grounded in October 1963 due to Ménière's disease, an inner-ear ailment that caused episodes of extreme dizziness and nausea. This was surgically corrected in 1968, and in 1971, Shepard commanded the Apollo 14 mission, piloting the Apollo Lunar Module Antares. He was the only one of the Mercury Seven astronauts to walk on the Moon. During the mission, he hit two golf balls on the lunar surface.Shepard was Chief of the Astronaut Office from November 1963 to August 1969 (the approximate period of his grounding), and from June 1971 until April 30, 1974. On August 25, 1971, he was promoted to rear admiral, the first astronaut to reach that rank. This week on The Cosmic Companion, we are Celebrating Diversity in Space Exploration, looking at the history of inclusion in human explorations beyond our world — past, present, and future. Later in the show, we'll be talking with Meredith Bagby, author of The New Guys, a look at NASA's groundbreaking astronaut class of 1978.The history of space exploration has been marked by numerous milestones, not only in terms of scientific and technological achievements but also in the inclusion and diversity of those who explore beyond our home world. Over the decades, space exploration has slowly evolved to include women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals, paving the way for greater representation in the future.NASA's original class of astronauts from 1959, the Mercury Seven, were all Caucasian male jet pilots — not exactly representative of a melting pot of society. However, less well-known were the Mercury 13, a group of 13 women who underwent astronaut training in the early 1960s. Despite performing as well, if not better, than men at many rigorous physiological tests, NASA did not recognize these women as official astronaut trainees. Opposed by many politicians and media alike, no member of the Mercury 13 flew to space for 60 years until Wally Funk in 2021... The first International Space Station was a joint US-USSR mission called the Apollo-Soyuz Test Program in 1975 when three astronauts and two cosmonauts spent nearly two days together docked in Earth orbit. Each year, on November 11, Americans pause to celebrate Veterans Day.
The first ever episode of Thunderbirds, the revolutionary British TV show starring puppets, aired on September 30th, 1965. It was instantly a hit in Britain, and elsewhere in the world, but its failure to captivate a US audience led to its untimely demise after just two seasons. The show used a system, coined by its creators as “Supermarionation” which involved pre-recording the voices, which would then be played back during filming. Each marionette's head contained filters which converted the dialogue into pulses, which in turn travelled to solenoids in the puppet's lips. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly discuss why each marionette needed three heads; look at how the Mercury Seven – the first batch of Nadi astronauts – were honoured by the show; and reveal which of the three of us still has Thunderbirds merch from when they were a kid. This week, JFK meets with the Mercury Seven at the White House to honor Alan Shepard, specifically, and the entire team, generally, for all they have done to get America in space. Acting to build on what he knew would be short-lived momentum after Freedom 7's flight, Kennedy addresses congress and the American public about the importance of the space race, despite what would be tremendous cost. He then asked Congress to find the program and the American taxpayer to foot the bill.Gus Grissom becomes the second American in space, but unlike Alan Shepard, he is not paraded in front of cameras at the White House after his flight. His mission was just about perfect until the landing. Let's just say his capsule, Liberty Bell 7, would be lost of 38 years. That may or may not have been Grissom's fault, but no one really wanted to think about that at the moment.Oh yeah, and then Russia sends another cosmonaut into space and unlike the two Americans who each spent about 15 minutes in space, he stays up for nearly 25 hours! Today Kevin and I meet with Loretta Hall, a freelance writer and nonfiction book author. She has been interested in space travel since her teenage years, when she followed closely the early NASA programs: selection of the Mercury Seven astronauts, the suborbital and orbital missions of Mercury and Gemini, and the Apollo steps toward a moon landing. About fifteen years ago, her latent fascination with space exploration resurfaced, and she has since concentrated on that subject. She has written nine nonfiction books, including five on the history and future of space travel. Loretta loves finding ways to participate in space activities without being an astronaut. That led her to write one of her books, The Complete Space Buff's Bucket List: 100 Space Things to Do Before You Die. Her newest book, Higher, Faster, Longer: My Life in Aviation and My Quest for Spaceflight, was a cooperative effort to produce the memoir of Wally Funk, an icon in the fields of aviation and spaceflight. In 1983–1984, Corbin played Merit Sawyer in the NBC television series Boone. Corbin's role was that of a stern father to the young actor Tom Byrd, who played Boone Sawyer, an aspiring singer. The program was set in rural Tennessee during the 1950s and was created by Earl Hamner, who had great success earlier with CBS's The Waltons.In 1994, Corbin narrated the acclaimed TBS documentary MoonShot, telling the story of the 1960s space race from the first-person viewpoint of Mercury Seven astronaut Deke Slayton. The Mercury Seven established the job role as 'astronaut' as being something that was possible and enamored decades of young people towards space travel. While Ireland is yet to really get to grips with space travel, one person who has been fighting for her place in the skies is Niamh Shaw. Niamh Shaw is an engineer, scientist and was recently voted one of Ireland's leading science communicators and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and maths). Strap yourselves in because this one’s gonna be a doozy of an episode. Not only is it one of the longer movies we’ve ever watched for the podcast, but this one can also be a bit of a contentious one in some ways. I think that’s what happens when you’re watching a film that’s as exhaustive and in-depth as this one is. If you’ve ever wanted to see a movie that explains the full extent of the Mercury Seven astronauts, what they went through to be able to go into space, and a good bit of past global politics, then this one’s for you! Okay, that sounded like these here show notes are trying to talk you out of watching this film. That’s the case! The Right Stuff is absolutely worth a watch. Just don’t feel bad about splitting this one up into a few separate viewings. The film opens up with a very thrilling moment in the history of flight: the breaking of the sound barrier by Chuck Yeager. This film makes the case that this was the moment that changed so much for the world. There’s a strong line between this point and people landing and walking on the Moon for the very first time. These are monumental moments in humankind’s history and they’re depicted in a very real and thrilling way here. While most other movies might have spent much of their running times depicting just the scary and exciting process of putting someone up into space, this one also spends a significant amount of time showing how the dangerous job of being an astronaut affects these men and their families. This film truly isn’t just about rockets and space travel and glory. It’s actually about the drive of a select group of people and the brave struggle of their wives. It’s a film about lofty dreams and sometimes crushing reality. Overall, Steven enjoyed the sound design of this one, but he was fascinated by how different sound design techniques and preferences were during this era of filmmaking. There’s an elevated reality to the sound in this film that may not be so in vogue these days. Regardless, much of the sound really draws you in. It’s easy to imagine yourself shooting into space while watching this film, especially if you’ve got a nice sound system. Likewise, Sean was pleased with the look of this film. The camera work and lighting depicted three very different main locations: the desert where Chuck Yeager spends his time setting speed records, the sterile rooms and hallways of NASA, and the cramped confines of the capsules that were used to send these astronauts into space. Each one of those main locations felt real. You could taste the grit of the desert dust, hear the squeakiness of those NASA hallways, and feel the squeeze of those capsules. This is a film that demands a lot of your attention, but it rewards the time you spend watching it. It depicts an important history in an exacting and entertaining way. Give it a watch today! John Herschel Glenn Jr. (July 18,1921 – December 8, 2016) was a United States Marine Corps aviator, engineer, astronaut, and United States Senator from Ohio. In 1962 he was the first American to orbit the Earth, circling it three times. Before joining NASA, Glenn was a distinguished fighter pilot in World War II and Korea with six Distinguished Flying Crosses and eighteen Air Medals. He was one of the Mercury Seven, military test pilots selected in 1959 by NASA as the United States' first astronauts. On February 20, 1962, Glenn flew the Friendship 7 mission; the first American to orbit the Earth, he was the fifth person in space. He received the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1978, was inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1990, and was the last surviving member of the Mercury Seven. After Glenn resigned from NASA in 1964 and retired from the Marine Corps the following year, he planned to run for a U.S. Senate seat from Ohio. An injury in early 1964 forced his withdrawal, and he lost a close primary election in 1970. A member of the Democratic Party, Glenn first won election to the Senate in 1974 and served for 24 years until January 3, 1999.
The Mercury Seven were the group of seven Mercury astronauts announced by NASA on April 9, 1959. They are also referred to as the Original Seven or Astronaut Group 1. They piloted the manned spaceflights of the Mercury program from May 1961 to May 1963. These seven original American astronauts were Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton. Members of the group flew on all classes of NASA manned orbital spacecraft of the 20th century — Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and the Space Shuttle. Gus Grissom died in 1967, in the Apollo 1 fire. The others all survived past retirement from service. John Glenn went on to become a U.S. senator, and flew on the Shuttle 36 years later to become the oldest person to fly in space. He was the last living member of the class when he died in 2016
On this date in 1967, three American astronauts died in a training accident on the launch pad in Florida. Here are some things you may not have known about Apollo 1. Following the successes of the Mercury and Gemini programs, the next step in landing a man on the moon was the three-man Apollo program. The astronauts chosen as the first crew for the Apollo program were Gus Grissom, one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts, Ed White, who had been the first American to walk in space, and rookie Roger B. Chaffee. Chaffee’s spot had originally been given to Donn F. Eisele, who was grounded after dislocating his shoulder during weightlessness training on board a training craft nicknamed a “vomit comet.” Gus Grissom was born in Indiana in 1926. After serving in the Army Air Forces during the end of World War II, Grissom returned home an earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University in 1950. He reenlisted in the Air Force after graduating and served during the Korean War, flying 100 combat missions. In 1958 he was selected by NASA to be part of a preliminary group of pilots for the Mercury program. He was nearly disqualified when he was found to suffer from hay fever, but was allowed to continue once it was determined that there wasn’t any ragweed pollen in space. Grissom was the second American in space in Liberty Bell 7. Grissom’s first space flight lasted 15 and a half minutes. After splashdown, the hatch cover exploded open filling the capsule with seawater. Grissom’s spacesuit also filled with water, but he was rescued. The capsule sank and wasn’t recovered until 1999. Grissom became the first American to fly into space twice when he piloted Gemini 3 with John W. Young. It was the first manned Gemini mission. The mission lasted a little under five hours. Ed White was born in Texas in 1930. He graduated from West Point in 1952 and served in the Air Force, stationed in West Germany. He narrowly missed qualifying for the U.S. Olympic team in the 400-meter hurdles. He was part of the second group of astronauts and was chosen to fly on Gemini 4. On that flight he was the first American to leave a space capsule. He enjoyed the experience so much that he had to be ordered to return to the capsule. A mechanical issue made it difficult to open and close the hatch door, which had to be latched to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere. The capsule and crew returned safely following a four-day mission. Roger Chaffee was born in Michigan in 1935. He graduated with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Purdue. He served as a naval aviator, logging more than 2,000 hours in jet aircraft. He was part of the third group of astronauts and served on the ground as a capsule communicator for Ed White’s Gemini 4 mission. On January 27, 1967, the crew was loaded into the spacecraft as part of a “plugs-out” test to see if the module would operate on internal power. The test was considered non-hazardous because the the vehicle was not fueled and all pyrotechnic systems were disabled. At 2:45 p.m., the hatch was closed and the cabin was filled with oxygen at 2 psi more than atmospheric pressure. At 6:31 p.m., one of the astronauts yelled “Hey!” or “Fire!.” Two seconds later, Chaffee reported a fire in the cockpit. Seven seconds later, a garbled transmission seemed to say “We’ve got a bad fire — Let’s get out .. We’re burning up.” The last communication ended a little less than 16 seconds after the first report of a fire. The fire caused the pressure inside the capsule to rise to 29 PSI which led the inner wall of the module to rupture and the fire to spread. After the oxygen was consumed, the air from outside caused smoke and carbon monoxide to fill the cabin, but also put out the fire. It took more than five minutes for workers to open the hatch. Inside, with the cabin lights still on, were the bodies of the three astronauts. Grissom was found on the floor of the spacecraft. White was found just inside the hatch, while Chaffee was found in his seat. It took 90 minutes to remove the bodies because of the melted nylon spacesuits fusing to the cabin. White had likely been trying to open the hatch, which was impossible, given the high pressure inside the cabin holding the door shut. It was determined that the fire was likely caused by exposed electrical wiring and a leaky cooling system. This, combined with the pure oxygen atmosphere, flammable materials, an inward-opening hatch and inadequate emergency preparedness contributed to the magnitude of the disaster. Following an investigation, the cabin atmosphere for future launches was changed to 60 percent oxygen and 40 percent nitrogen. The astronaut pressure suits continued to use pure oxygen as a way of preventing decompression sickness or the bends. The suits were redesigned with a non-flammable fabric. The hatch was replaced by an outward opening door and all flammable materials were removed. More than 1,400 wiring problems were also corrected. Grissom and Chaffee were buried at Arlington National Cemetery. White was buried at West Point. John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth - a freckle-faced son of Ohio who was hailed as a national hero and a symbol of the space age, has died at 95. In 1959, the "Mercury Seven" group of military test pilots selected to be the first astronauts. Then in 1962, he flew the 'Friendship 7' mission and became the first American to orbit the Earth. Glenn was the last surviving member of the original Mercury crew. He would later have a long political career in the United States Senate, and made history again in 1998, flying aboard the shuttle Discovery and becoming the oldest person in space at age 77. We remember Senator Glenn not just for his service, but as an inspiration to all fields of space science over the years.

On Thursday, John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth and a longtime senator from Ohio died at the age of 95. Here are a few things you may not have known about him. John Glenn was born on July 18, 1921, in Cambridge, Ohio, in the southeastern part of the state. In 1941, he earned his private pilot license for credit in a physics class at Muskingum College. He didn’t complete his degree at that time because he quit college to enlist in the Army Air Corps. He was never called to duty, so he enlisted in the Navy as an aviation cadet. Soon after, he transferred to the Marine Corps. Beginning in 1943, Glenn flew 59 combat missions in the South Pacific, and was promoted to captain shortly before the end of World War II. During the Korean War, Glenn flew 63 missions in the new F9F Panther jet. He gained the nickname “Magnet Ass” for his ability to draw enemy fire. Twice he returned to base with more than 250 holes in his plane. For a time, baseball legend Ted Williams served as his wingman. After the Korean War, Glenn served as a test pilot, completing the first transcontinental supersonic flight in 1957. A year later he applied for a place in NASA’s first class of astronauts. Despite being 39 years old, just shy of the age limit of 40, and not holding a required college degree in science, Glenn was among the group chosen. Glenn joined Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton as part of the Mercury Seven. Glenn was chosen for the third Mercury mission, the first that would orbit the Earth. On the morning of February 20, 1962, atop an Atlas rocket, John Glenn, inside his capsule called Friendship 7, was launched into orbit. Glenn circled the Earth three times during his almost 5-hour mission before splashing down in the Atlantic Ocean north of Puerto Rico. Glenn was given a hero’s welcome on his return home, receiving a ticker-tape parade in New York City, and meeting with President John F. Kennedy and receiving the NASA Distinguished Service Medal. In 1964, Glenn resigned from NASA to run for the U.S. Senate as a Democrat. However, his candidacy was short-lived as he dropped out after suffering a concussion in a fall in the bathtub. He retired from the Marine Corps on January 1, 1965, and went to work as an executive with Royal Crown Cola. Glenn became close friends with the Kennedy family. He was present when Bobby Kennedy was killed in 1968, and served as one of his pallbearers. Glenn ran for Senate again in 1970, losing the Democratic primary. He was finally elected to the Senate in 1974. He was a candidate for vice president in 1976, and for president in 1984. In 1998, at the age of 77 and while still serving as a senator, Glenn returned to space on the shuttle Discovery, as part of an experiment in geriatric studies. The mission made Glenn the oldest person to fly in space, and the only person to fly in both the Mercury and Space Shuttle programs. Upon the crew’s return to Earth, they were the recipients of a ticker-tape parade in New York, making Glenn the 10th and most recent non-athlete to receive multiple ticker-tape parades. In June 2016, the Port Columbus International Airport was renamed in honor of John Glenn. Glenn was the last surviving member of the Mercury Seven. Glenn married the former Annie Castor in 1943 after they met in college. She survives him, along with their two children and two grandchildren.
