Being a dog in Colombia tends to mean you can live a completely unrestricted life, unlike many of the Homo sapiens who call the country home. Of course, it's stretching it to expect dogs to be responsible for their actions. The humans who own them, however, well let's just say they leave a lot to be desired. The wild swings that developers took on the PS2 are infinitely fascinating, and one that you don't hear too much about is Dog's Life. It's a bad game, but there's not much else like it. It's open-ish world, you play as a dog, and you can shit and piss at the press of a button. One person does all of the voices, and the ending needs to be seen to be believed.
This week I had the privilege of spending a few days with Hannah and Jeremias Kinnunen-Levy, a couple who run a homestead and dog sledding company up here in the North of Sweden. We discuss the lifestyle choices involved in what they do. we also talk a little about how they got to where they are and whats involved in living a life of simplicity and comfort. I also discuss the differences between knowledge and experience.

Jake & Spencer candidly commiserate about their world’s woes, sing Dame Angela Lansbury a very happy 95th birthday, and leap into possibly one of the worst episodes of television in the history of forever! An endearing horndog of an old rich man dies by way of a buck wild horse, and the cute basset hound that inherits his entire estate might the one to blame. No seriously. We wish we were joking. Throw in a Foghorn Leghorn-esque Southern lawyer, an astral projecting daughter, something about a bike chain, and a nice set of withers, and you’ve got yourself one of the most bonkers snoozefests of an episode yet. Oh yeah. And Jessica Fletcher is there too, we guess.
For this heart-warming Oh Behave show episode, call your dog over and both listen as lifelong dog lover and author Peter Bogyo shares tributes of dogs in his just-released book, "A Dog's Life: A Collection of Humorous Tributes Celebrating Man's Best Friend." This is the twentieth episode of Six Table Stories. “Six Table Stories” are completely mythical, and all involve the people in a completely mythical small community known as Six Table. All the stories were written by James D. Fischer. Some of the stories began as short plays, some have been wrestled into reading shape from short stories. A few have been published, in small anthologies. The players are a gracious volunteer outfit, the site you’re listening to is put up by the Independence, Kansas Public Library, which continues to be an adventurous outfit whose adventures have been nationally recognized.

The little children’s book with a big heart is called Efa: A Seminole Dog. Jerry C. Morris wrote it and the Seminole Wars Foundation published it in 2015 to give young people an image for what life was like during wartime in Tampa in 1838. Told from the view of a dog, the story recalls a period of Florida history we call the Second Seminole War.As we have discussed previously on this podcast, from 1835-1842, the United States government attempted to forcibly remove the Seminole people from their Florida homes to reservations in what is now Oklahoma. One of the saddest things in this very sad tale was that the Army would not permit the departing Seminoles to take their dogs with them. As the ships departed, many dogs were left sitting on the shore, watching their masters on ship decks pass out of sight, never to return. One of those Indians was a Black Seminole who went by the name of John Horse, or Gopher John. After a prolonged and valiant struggle, John Horse surrendered to the Army in April 1838. In this book, Jerry Morris imagines that Efa belonged to John Horse and pines each day for his return. Author Jerry Morris is a long-time living historian of the Second Seminole War, who dressed as a soldier of that era, actually hiked the March of Major Dade’s ill-fated column from Tampa to present-day Bushnell. He joins us to discuss everything about Efa. Throughout this podcast, Efa will rejoin us to present his insights on his life as he yearns for John Horse to come back for him. Will he? Spoiler Alert: This IS a children’s book. No one goes away unhappy. [Art by Tyler Thompson. Photo by Angela Rogers. Canine voice characterization by Patrick Swan]Host Patrick Swan is a board member with the Seminole Wars Foundation. He is a combat veteran and of the U.S. Army, serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Kosovo, and at the Pentagon after 9/11. Welcome to a Dog's Life, an alternative look at modern dog ownership
Where the lost dogs go with Susannah Charleson. In the wake of the Oklahoma City bombing, Susannah Charleson clipped a photo from the newspaper of an exhausted canine handler, face buried in the fur of his search-and-rescue dog. A dog lover and pilot with search experience herself, Susannah was so moved by the image that she decided to volunteer with a local canine team and soon discovered firsthand the long hours, nonexistent pay, and often heart-wrenching results they face. Once she qualified to train a dog of her own, she adopted Puzzle, a strong, bright Golden Retriever puppy who exhibited unique aptitudes as a working dog but who was less interested in the role of compliant house pet. The scent of the Missing is the story of Susannah and Puzzle’s adventures as they search for the missing a lost teen, an Alzheimer’s patient wandering in the cold, signs of the crew amid the debris of the space shuttle Columbia disaster and unravel the mystery of the bond between humans and dogs. A search dog with a gift for compassion, a stray dog with a gift for survival, a torn family who learned to make a difference, and the heartbreak healed by them all. When a K9 search specialist for missing persons turns to the work for lost pets, families are reunited, including her own. What Animals Large and Small Taught Me About Life, Love, and Humanity with Dr. Mark Goldstein. From the time Dr. Mark Goldstein was a little boy, even before he had his first dog, he was fascinated by creatures both domestic and wild. After graduating from veterinary school at Cornell University, he became a veterinarian in clinical practice, then director of zoos in Boston and Los Angeles, then head of a progressive humane society where he advocated for animal welfare. During his extraordinary 30-year career, Dr. Mark has accrued a lifetime of experiences working with all sorts of animals and the people who care for them. Dr. Mark's life with animals taught him more than how to be a great doctor, it taught him how to live life. The stories in this book reflect those lessons; they will make you laugh and cry as they entertain and amaze you. Each real-life experience sheds light on the challenges and hard work of the talented individuals who work in the world of animal welfare. These are stories that illustrate the tremendous impact animals have on our daily lives—they are hallmarks of the sacred importance of the human-animal bond. On your journey through the exhilarating life of Dr. Mark, you'll meet some of the finned, furred, and feathered animals who offered him invaluable insights—Harold the hamster, Sasha the Siberian tiger, St. Francis the German Shepherd, Ralph the buffalo, Gus the stallion, Frank the goldfish, and many more fascinating creatures! Mark Goldstein, DVM, has spent over 40 years caring, advocating, and fighting for the welfare of animals. The institutions he worked at are all recognized leaders in their respective fields and the variety of animals he worked with and his responsibilities were unique. He was a senior staff clinician in the medicine department at Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston. After being hired to head the Boston Zoos, he led a turnaround for the failing inner-city Franklin Park Zoo. "Dr. Mark" then moved west with his wife Kristine and their two daughters when he was appointed to lead the Los Angeles Zoo. He followed his heart to shine a light on the importance of the human-animal bond and took the helm at the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA where he oversaw the design, development, and completion of the "San Diego Campus for Animal Care." Many aspects of the campus, its programs and its unique partnership with the municipal animal care department have been copied numerous times both nationally and internationally. He has a BS in Animal Science and a DVM degree from Cornell University. The behavior of dogs and their wild relatives with Dr. Clive D. L. Wynne, Behavioral Scientist. Clive is a behavioral scientist with a fascination for dogs and their wild relatives. As a psychology professor who directs the Canine Science Collaboratory at Arizona State University in Tempe, he is also the Director of Research at Wolf Park in Battle Ground, IN, and the author of Dog Is Love. Clive was born and raised on the Isle of Wight, off the south coast of England. He studied at University College London and got his Ph.D. at Edinburgh University before setting off on his travels. After time at the Ruhr-Universitat Bochum, Duke University, Universität Konstanz, the University of Western Australia and the University of Florida, Clive came to Arizona State University in 2013. Over the years he has studied the behavior of many species - ranging from pigeons to dunnarts (a small mouse-like marsupial). But some years ago Clive found a way to meld his childhood love of dogs with his professional training and now study and teach the behavior of dogs and their wild relatives.

Imua (pronounced ee-moo-ah) Services, founded by our guest Meghan Alonso, helps startup companies and individuals get their medical innovations up and running. The hawaiian word “imua” means “to advance forward with passion despite rough waves”. With nearly 75% of all startups in this field failing, Meghan’s company offers training, education and connections to key development partners, tailored to the client’s needs so they can bring their life-changing and even life-saving technology to the world. Meghan’s passion stems from some rough waves due to medical issues for her and her family. Meghan was born with a folded retina in her left eye that by the time she was in college was replaced with a custom made, hand painted prosthetic eye which looks almost imperceptibly real. She also has an extra vertebrae in her spine which has resulted in numerous issues including scoliosis, disk herniations, and a tilted pelvis among others. She had a love of dance and gymnastics, and despite pain which she learned how to manage through exercise, she excelled at both, and even did gymnastics right through college. Her family’s biggest challenge though came from an unidentified illness that plagued her brother, which was eventually identified as Hepatitis C. Both Meghan and her mother also tested positive for it. Meghan’s mother likely contracted through a blood transfusion in the mid ‘70s which she transferred to her son and Meghan in utero. This led to 7 different treatments of low-dose chemotherapy. Through this challenging time they kept moving forward, and now happily report that all three of them are completely free of the disease. Meghan’s passion for surfing led her to Hawaii where she enrolled in a graduate program that ended up not being for her. After one semester, she dropped out, and surfed all over the island. She worked at the 4 Seasons Lanai which she loved but eventually realized she didn’t see herself doing it long term. She obtained Exercise Science Master’s Program in Houston and eventually settled in San Diego. There she helped athletes reach their full potential. This led to her working in an orthopedic rehab clinic where she was exposed to medical devices, and a multitude of patients with different rehab protocols. She was later invited to build a rehab center from the ground up which is now a three center organization. When she moved on from there, she Meghan had the opportunity to live out one of her childhood dreams of dancing on TV and with the Ooh La La salsa dancing troupe, toured all over Europe and the US. She also was part of America’s Got Talent in Season 6. All the dancing took a toll on her body, and the pain in her back became increasingly worse and she discovered she also had hip dysplasia and she had damaged the lining of both of her hip sockets. This led to surgery in Colorado which involved a hip replacement. Her experience at the clinic led her to finally dive into the field of medical devices. She started Imua in 2015 after she had been working in medical product development. The company she was working for was predominantly an engineering firm that innovators used to take care of the engineering component of the device idea. She soon found herself being contacted by passionate people who had great ideas, but no idea how to get started. Initially, she offered them resources to help them get started, and soon, it became a business. Meghan helps her clients navigate the complicated process of bringing their ideas to the marketplace. Whether they move towards actually manufacturing and marketing their product, or selling the idea to a company who can do so, Imua’s mission remains to become the world leader in helping entrepreneurs, scientists, students and inventors bring their life changing ideas to fruition. You can connect with Meghan on her IMUA website at http://imua-services.com/, via LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/meghanalonso, on Twitter at https://twitter.com/meghanmalonso?lang=en, and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/meghanmalonso. Meghan M. Alonso is known for her medical device podcast, Inspired by Imua, and her valuable connections in the medical industry. She is a patriotic military wife, pet parent, founder and co-founder of 4 successful companies who thrives on guiding medical device and IVD companies through development and manufacturing. When she isn’t helping others, Meghan is hard at work on her MBA she is pursuing from Auburn University, staying active with her adorable husky Abby, crossfitting, enjoying great restaurants and fine wine with her husband, and soaking up the sun on the So Cal beaches.

Gary Butterfield and Kole Ross manage to talk about Harvest Moon and SimCity (the SNES versions of both). This Split EP is dedicated to two SNES games that take it a little bit slow. Both Harvest Moon and SimCity ask the player to make decisions about how to use limited resources like time and money in order to get some kind of return. Sometimes that's a bountiful turnip harvest, and sometimes that's a happy populace. While both series would go on to grow and change, these SNES versions are the simplest distillation of what they are trying to accomplish. This show is about the world of sound captured by Tony Schwartz and produced on Folkways Records. While not a household name, Schwartz is a legendary figure in the advertising business. There is another side to Tony Schwartz. It is found in his passion for recording sounds, particularly human made sounds and for New York City. The marriage of these passions is found in sound documents that range from short sound poems to lengthier sound essays. Often produced for his radio show, sometimes these found their way to become tracks on albums he made for Folkways Records. Smithsonian Folkways: Sounds to Grow On is a 26-part series hosted by Michael Asch that features the original recordings of Folkways Records.
The theme of this show is about Smithsonian Folkways material inspired by dogs, so Michael Asch has called the show “Going to the Dogs.” The idea for the show came from Rob Wiznura, researcher on this radio series, and a guy who likes dogs, and puns about them. Michael is less committed, more of a cat man. Hear songs, sounds and documentary segments, all on the canine theme.
