Today on Too Opinionated, we sit down with Donelle Dadigan, the President and Co-founder of the José Iturbi Foundation & President and Founder of The Hollywood Museum. Once upon a time in the 1940s and 1950s in America, classical music and its stars were a natural part of many big Hollywood movies. This golden age saw the creation of famous musical hits such as Anchors Aweigh with Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra or That Midnight Kiss with Mario Lanza, in which a spirited piano virtuoso and conductor always played himself: José Iturbi. Nowadays known only to connoisseurs and aficionados, the native Spaniard was at the time, along with Oscar Levant (An American in Paris), one of the most commercially successful classical artists in Hollywood. When the film A Song to Remember was released in 1945, for example, Iturbi's recording of a Chopin Polonaise sold 800,000 copies. Shortly thereafter, his recording company, RCA Victor, paid him over $118,000 in semiannual royalties – a record at the time. And Iturbi's passion wasn't just for music: he completed 1,400 hours of flying as a pilot, enjoyed riding motorcycles fast, and excelled as an amateur boxer. This edition is a tribute to an era when classical music from films made its journey around the world. It contains all the recordings made by José Iturbi and his sister Amparo Iturbi for RCA Victor from 1933 to 1955, painstakingly restored and remastered from the original records and tapes, including numerous previously unreleased recordings. The 188-page coffee-table book includes a detailed biographical essay by “Ambassador for the American Songbook” and producer of this set Michael Feinstein, extensive documentation with photographs and facsimiles from the José Iturbi Foundation archives, and a complete session and release discography. · The complete RCA Victor Recordings by José Iturbi from 1933 to 1953, including his piano duo recordings with sister Amparo Iturbi as well as Amparo Iturbi's solo recordings on 16 CDs, restored and remastered from the original lacquer discs and analogue tapes using high-resolution 24 bit/192 kHz mastering technology with about 95% of the recordings appearing on CD for the first time and 23 pieces previously unreleased. · A new, captivating essay by GRAMMY®-nominated singer, pianist, and music anthropologist Michael Feinstein on the life and work of José Iturbi. · Complete session discography as well a complete documentation of José Iturbi's commercial releases on 78rpm and LP. · Photo book with previously unseen photos and facsimiles from the Iturbi Archives in Hollywood.
Greg Schreiner owns a comprehensive collection of Marilyn Monroe memorabilia, encompassing furniture items from Marilyn's final home, autographs, cancelled bank checks, including a check to Eunice Murray dated August 4, 1962, film scripts, documents and original costume sketches. In 2006, items from his personal collection of Marilyn Monroe memorabilia, including nine gowns, original costume sketches and custom dolls toured the world, with stops in the US and Japan. In 2007, the Texas State Fair was proud to exhibit nine Marilyn Monroe gowns from the collection. The display was the most diverse exhibit of Marilyn Monroe memorabilia ever to be showcased in one place. The Hollywood Museum showcased Greg's collection in 2008 and 2009. Mr. Schreiner is the President and a founding member of the longest running fan club in existence today, Marilyn Remembered. Each year since 1982, Greg has arranged and facilitated the Marilyn Monroe Memorial Service, held on August 5 at Westwood Memorial Park, Marilyn's resting place. This stunning musical revue showcases a truly dazzling lineup of costumes actually worn by the stars in the original Hollywood films. Set to the music that defined the times, this show leaves viewers in awe as they learn about and come close enough to touch these historic original masterpieces of old-time Hollywood. Mr. Schreiner has performed as a soloist with the Los Angeles Concert Orchestra, Santa Monica College Symphony, UCLA Symphony, Cypress Pops Orchestra and performed on the opening ceremonies of the 1984 Olympics. In addition to having several recordings in release, he performed the Shostakovitch and Piano Concerto for the PBS series In Search Of Wisdom and was the composer/performer for the educational series Masters Of The Silent Screen.

This week on Remainders, we talk the 1981 neo-noir Body Heat. Written and directed by Lawrence Kasdan – around the same time as writing Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Empire Strikes Back – Body Heat was inspired by Double Indemnity and launched the careers of William Hurt and Kathleen Turner. Ned (Hurt) is a hapless lawyer who falls hard for the sultry but married Matty (Turner). Their affair turns dark though when they initiate a plot to kill her husband – with the potential to reap his fortune. A throwback to 40s crime noir, Body Heat feels especially relevant today as society reevaluates the eroticism in films of the 80s and 90s.Other topics include new pieces from Darren's collection and his upcoming exhibit at La Luz De Jesus Gallery, some first time Remainders swag available for purchase, a visit to the Hollywood Museum, what we're watching on TV these days, Ebert vs. Kael, favorite William Hurt and Kathleen Turner performances, and the enduring brilliance of traumatic 1980s kids movies.Music Picks of the WeekSink to the Bottom by Fountains of WayneMysterium by HammockMashed Potato Time by Dee Dee KingWebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTubeTwitter
