Deliverance (1972)   Deliverance is a 1972 American survival thriller film produced and directed by John Boorman, and starring Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ned Beatty, and Ronny Cox, with the latter two making their feature film debuts. The screenplay was adapted by James Dickey from his 1970 novel of the same name. The film was a critical and box office success, earning three Academy Award nominations and five Golden Globe Award nominations.  Widely acclaimed as a landmark picture, the film is noted for a music scene near the beginning, with one of the city men playing "Dueling Banjos" on guitar with a banjo-picking country boy, and for its notorious, violent, brutal sodomy rape scene. In 2008, Deliverance was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."   Race With The Devil (1973)   Race with the Devil is a 1975 American action horror film directed by Jack Starrett, written by Wes Bishop and Lee Frost, and starring Peter Fonda, Warren Oates, Loretta Swit, and Lara Parker. This was the second of three films Fonda and Oates would star in together (The Hired Hand, 1971) was their first, and 92 in the Shade (1975) was their third). The twenty-first annual Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards are upon us! A special category in the Rondos is the write-in for Monster Kid Hall of Fame, which honors those who've made a permanent mark on the world of classic horror appreciation. Many of the inductees are/were fans of the genre themselves. This award is a rare distinction indeed, and there are several notable recipients. Missing from the list, however, is Dark Shadows creator Dan Curtis! This episode of Terror at Collinwood includes a series of interview clips featuring Dan Curtis himself, along with writer Sam Hall and actress Lara Parker. The clips help illustrate why Curtis should be considered for Monster Kid Hall of Fame status. A known enthusiast of classic terror tales and motion pictures, Curtis certainly made prominent puncture marks on the genre with Dark Shadows. He also unleashed the iconic The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler, and he helmed adaptations of Dracula, Frankenstein, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Turn of the Screw, and The Picture of Dorian Gray. He directed both Dark Shadows MGM feature films, the horror cult classics Burnt Offerings, Trilogy of Terror, Dead of Night, and many more! After his epic miniseries Winds of War and War and Remembrance, he returned to the world of the gothic with the 1991 Dark Shadows revival series, which featured horror legend Barbara Steele (who is also long past due for induction into the Monster Kid Hall of Fame). Welcome back to the Period Chats Podcast! We have Lara Parker here today, author of the book “Vagina Problems.” Laura has experience with endometriosis, adenomyosis, vaginismus, and vulvar vestibulitis, and began to write about the topic because it was so underrepresented in literature and she didn't want people to feel alone. Indicators that you might be suffering with pelvic pain or a related condition are: pain during sex and/or orgasm, super heavy periods, skin irritation and redness, digestive symptoms like bloating or IBS-type issues, or tenderness to touch. Sometimes doctor visits and the nature of the issue can make people feel more isolated in the experience, and Lara gives some great examples of ways we can humanize and de-stigmatize the topic, and by extension many other issues that our society would do well to further normalize. As we all continue to advocate for ourselves, and move toward the place where we can “act like a white man,” aka confident communication without apology or other self-shrinking verbiage, we need to remember that our health issues aren't something we need to apologize for, over-explain, or minimize. Lara shares about her experience with a surgery for endometriosis, how that particular surgery interacts with most insurance plans, and what her recovery and ongoing health journey has looked like since. Her modalities of care currently include physical therapy for pelvic pain, chiropractic care, therapy, acupuncture and others. We also talk about how the conversation around chronic illness needs to shift towards quality of life. Sometimes in our culture there can be a false dichotomy where you're either dying or you're fine, but focusing on quality of life gives the conversation more much-needed nuance, and can help outsiders empathize with where each of us are on the health spectrum. If you need a good reminder to take care of yourself, advocate for your own recovery and health, and leave behind the habit of apologizing for existing, Lara's wisdom and honesty will point you in that direction today.

Subscribe to The Locher Room: https://bit.ly/TheLocherRoomPlease join me for a very special look at Dark Shadows and Beyond The Jonathan Frid Story in The Locher Room. This is the first feature-length documentary devoted to Canadian-born actor Jonathan Frid, who became a television sensation with his portrayal of guilt-ridden vampire Barnabas Collins on Dark Shadows, the 1966 – 1971 daytime drama that remains a beloved cult classic today. Joining me to talk about Jonathan and the documentary is Emmy-winning soap opera producer Mary O'Leary (The Young And The Restless, General Hospital, One Life To Live, Another World, Guiding Light) who wrote and produced the documentary. Mary will be joined by Dark Shadows actress Marie Wallace who played Jenny Collins, one of three parts she played on the series. Who was the man beneath the vampire's cloak? The documentary reveals Frid's joys, struggles, artistic triumphs and rise to fame in part through his own written correspondences, read by Ian Buchanan (General Hospital, Twin Peaks) and the reminiscences of family, friends, and co-stars. Among those offering insights are veteran talk show host Dick Cavett; actress Marion Ross (Happy Days), Anthony Zerbe (Omega Man, Harry O), Christina Pickles (St. Elsewhere, Friends) and Dark Shadows colleagues David Selby, Lara Parker, Kathryn Leigh Scott, Nancy Barrett, Marie Wallace, James Storm, John Karlen and Dan Curtis. Frid (who passed away in 2012 at age 87) appears in never-before-seen interviews as well as rare performance material and archival images.Dark Shadows and Beyond The Jonathan Frid Story will be available on Blu-ray, DVD and the Amazon Digital Platform on October 5 from MPI Media Group. We talk Dark Shadows, her feminist witch, then vampire. She talks about biting Johnny Carson and we discussed the horror film she starred in, Race With The Devil, 1975. When I first moved TO NYC it was on Channel 11 and scared me big time. The behind the scenes scoop she gave me was the real horror.. You will be very mad, not at Lara but the production team. Well huzzahs - huzzahs to you for listening, huzzahs to anyone whose voice or sound effects or music or handiwork of some kind contributed to making this podcast - we are at the final episode of Season One.And I DO hope to make Season two! What shall we do? What to explore / to highlight / help raise awareness of? Ping us if you know - quirkyvoices@gmail.comThanks again to the Pulse Award funding for enabling this fun and informative pod to happen. In this episode Charlie is still in her panic bath, trying to hide from Gabby and Rachel - but Gabby has other ideas and appears at her window - things do however go....slightly awry.In the main interview section I talk all things mental health with the condition, and things I have tried to help me over the years. Julie Wheeler tells us how and when to recognise that maybe we need to seek medical professional help, and kindly signposts further places to gain help and information to help you. This has been a superbly enlightening series to create - I know, I know it is ambitious, but I truly hope the format and info within helps someone gain confidence in themselves to be proactive and seek help, for listeners to reach out to pals or family, and for people to realise they are not alone in their suffering, they do not have to be, and there is help out there - even now, in this crazy. All useful links for eczema as well as all the medical conditions we have explored are on the Quirky Voices Website here, along with the sound effect list of downloaded and used sounds from Freesound.SO. THANK YOU for your support - please do share this pod far and wide to help it get to the people I made it for, and, if that is you, hugs from here to there for whatever you are going through. You will get through this. You will rebuild yourself. So Thank you for listening, and sharing.And....to my cast especially - Heartfelt thanks - to the regulars Diane Alexander, Lucy Shirley, Lara Parker, Kirstin Stansfield - I bloody love you - but you know that. HelLo you fabulous fiction loving folks of audio loving joyHope you are having a groovy fun filled day in whatever way gets you through this current crazy.... On release day here in the Uk it is a beautiful sunny day, and the world turns with us still on it, I often think of myself sitting here typing something or editing something and then zshumm up to see me as a birds eye view, typing, editing, then up further to see my house from the sky, then up further to see the country from space, then up further to see the planet revolving, and then zshumm back down in mini speed bursts to each distance increment back to me typing here through my eyes. . And that's some mindfulness right there. You've just done it too. Groovy...So today's ep still focuses on elements of my life journey with eczema. What treatments I have had, things I have felt and thought and felt through the eyes of Charlie in the audio fiction segment, as well as in my own words. The wonderful Julia Wheeler joins us once again to give top tips on how to help yourself if you have this condition. I do hope this is useful -do contact us via quirkyvoice@gmail.com if you want to feedback anything that has been helpful, or resonated with you in any of the episodes, or if you just want to say halloooo...doooo!Thanks to Matt Hutt and Zak Lemon for the grooviest of music. As usual, all links mentioned are on the Quirky Voices website (click here) for alllll the conditions explored in this season. Thanks so much to my wondrous cast - today you only really heard from the fantabulous Lucy Shirley as Rachel and Lara Parker as Gabby, and Fiona Thraille as Jill, who also executive produces this podcast. You can also find her own audio fiction awesome on the Dashing Onions Website here.Still gotta thank Diane Alexander, and Kirstin Stansfield for their general awesome and support. I am sure you will agree all the contributors are amazing for sharing their stories, and their courageousness in doing so has only been to help folks like you! As folks have continually told me, real life stories resonate the most...and use of verbatim moments and playing with dramatic fiction to highlight the reality of these conditions has seemingly been very effective to bring home elements of the true reality of living with these conditions. Thanks to my parents and fam for supporting me through my life’s crazy, and to my man and my kids who just lift me, make me laugh, make me proud, help me through my bad times and make my life so much more.Hope your day is a good one....and if you are having a crazy flare up right now, by reading this sentence, I am sending you vibes of good health and happiness and healing. Hello YOU WONDEROUS people of my timeline...or of the future....hey!How’s your world? Today we delve into the lows of the life of an exzematic.....what it might well be like behind many a closed door, as folks cope with acute all over body pain and the reality of a true flare of the chronic skin condition known as eczema. I AM....ECZEMATIC.. I AM...ASTHMATIC... I'M HYDRATOLOGICAL, WHY I'M GREASED NIGHTLYYYYYYIn the audiofiction, Charlie can only function in bed. Oh c'mon, not like that. It’s a school day, a day she isn’t meant to work, and her neighbours have seen the kids to school, and her husband is away. Sods law of course. She talks from her bed about what it is like...those crippling days. She reflects on how eczema has shaped her, and her thoughts about herself....her relationships. And yes, aspects of this are autobiographical. And yes, I did want to share my angst about finding someone amazing and fun to show you can be loved, and to show that, no matter how low you go, there is hope to find that groovy someone, cos....if I can....you certainly can. And he - Paul - makes my everyday even more amazing. So.....the sage advice here is....just be you, and....go out and enjoy yourself. Life has its crazy surprises - go gettemmm....The interview section is...er....slightly different for reasons that obvs I usually interview the guest. Hope what I’ve done works ok and isn’t too....ridiculous....and our wonderous expert is a Dermatology nurse, the fabulous Julia Wheeler.I do want to point out that obviously, she is very much following the NICE guidelines in her recommendations, and that there are....a good number of other options of treatment available to us sufferers that we don’t go into as those are not her specialism. I would like to continue to explore the eczematic treatments of things in future podcasts, so, if you are an alternative therapist, or have tried something worth shouting about, do contact me on quirkyvoices@gmail.com.As usual, all links mentioned are on the Quirky Voices website (click here) for alllll the conditions explored in this season,Thanks so much to my wondrous cast - today you only really heard from the fantabulous Fiona Thraille as Jill, who also executive produces this podcast. We fathom why Gabby feels so worried about how to be and what to do because of the painful legacy of her previous pregnancy.....and she admits that it is so much better to be able to share these thoughts and not go it alone..The wonderful Tracy Greenwood of The Blackpool Teaching Hospital’s NHS Trust talks about how folks can help themselves if the post or peri natal depression has started to take over.Lara Parker talks frankly on the key aspects of the condition that took its toll during and after her pregnancy. I find it fascinating. Touching on the whole how others see you and that whole dark place of continually comparing yourself to others...hyper anxiety is a terrible thing. Hello! And welcome to ANYONE F'COFFEE - A NEW Women's Health Podcast and a groovy PULSE AWARD funded must-listen-to pod - gently nurtured into this world by help from those amazing folks at The British Podcast Awards and The Wellcome Trust. Thanks for that folks! This week's episode - and they are coming out weekly - focuses on Endometriosis. A condition we explore through the real life experience of real life Kirstin Stansfield....teacher, medieval historian, amdram pal and friend of mine. We explore in this episode what it is, how she was treated, how she felt as she went along and why it was so hard to get diagnosed. After the interview with Kirstin is a fun segment of audio fiction (written by me) exploring the relationship of 5 characters with the conditions this podcast explores, all connecting over a cuppa, and finally sharing elements of their personal journeys. This is part verbatim and part theatricalised and I hope it makes you love these people and characters as much as I do! The last part of each episode will be an interview with a person in the know - either a medical professional or someone working closely with folks with the condition. If you suffer from the kind of pain FREYA does and haven't yet sought help, please find info and where to go for help in the shownotes links. Please be kind to yourself xToday we explore How and where folks with this condition (or suspecting they have it) can find help and information....and today we have help from THE LOVELY Faye Farthing of Endometriosis-uk.HERE is a link to the CAST BIOGS, allll references we make in the podcast ep, and to the sound effects I used in my original audio fiction PLUS full credits...on my Quirky Voices Website.Music was by Matt Hutt and Zac Lemon - love it! The Audio fiction segment was recorded in the Mysterious Movies Podcast and film studios in SEER GREEN, BUCKS. Please do contact Celine@mysteriousmovies.com for info and bookings! They are truly lovely - and we could NOT have done the day without the amazing engineering of RAPHAEL DARLEY in the session, who manoeuvred mics and made it a very cool and easy experience to get it alllll done! Lara Parker deals with vagina problems (which is also the title of her book, coming in 2020). On today’s episode, Lara I talk about why she started being upfront and open about how endometriosis and other conditions have affected her life, and why she feels a responsibility to tell her story. Whether she’s talking about dating with penetrative sex off the table or giving advice to people who are navigating endometriosis, Lara talks candidly about her experience...because as she puts it, why wouldn’t she?  Learn more about Lara and check out the show notes here. Lara Parker is a writer living in Los Angeles. She rose to popularity after publicly discussing her issues living with endometriosis and comorbid conditions, including vaginismus, vulvodynia, vulvar vestibulitis, PMDD, pelvic floor dysfunction, and interstitial cystitis, among others. You may remember her from the short-form docuseries Can We Cure, in which she and fellow Buzzfeed producer Kelsey Darragh tried laser therapy in an attempt to treat their chronic pain (new flash: Lara still uses laser – in case you were wondering, like I was!). Here’s the thing about Lara: she is as real as they come. She sees and acknowledges her privilege, she is unapologetically self-possessed, and she’s mad as hell (listen in to find out why). Her first book, Vagina Problems – a collection of essays that discusses the effects of endometriosis and chronic pain on her life and relationships – comes out October 6th, 2020.  Tune in as Lara tells us…  - that she first started noticing abdominal bloating and pain when she was in 6th grade; but she didn’t take her conditions seriously until about 3 years ago  - that she has been diagnosed with 10-12 different conditions  - that she was diagnosed with endometriosis about 6 years ago – through laparoscopic surgery (which is invasive and cost-prohibitive)  - that the surgery she had in order to diagnose her endometriosis made her pain worse  - that she also lives with constant bladder urgency  - that women’s health issues are constantly brushed off as not serious – and this puts women’s health at risk  - that she has almost always had pain during penetrative sex and orgasm – and felt betrayed by her own body for years  - that she has had to go from hating her body to showing it love  - that she’s had to untangle not only physical trauma, but also emotional trauma  - that her work in therapy is to reframe her experiences  - that she’s become very forthright in communication because of her conditions – not only with sexual partners, but with others, as well  - that she no longer blames her body for her experiences – and no longer makes apologies for what she needs  - that she is grateful for her Spoonie support community, from whom she’s learned so much – and to whom she credits her increasing confidence  - that writing became an outlet for her – because she didn’t know how to talk about her adverse health experiences  - that she didn’t know what kind of support she needed…or how to ask for it  - that despite the few good eggs out there, she doesn’t feel doctors are on her side – because historically, they haven’t been  - that she has shifted the anger she used to have toward her body to anger she channels at the doctors who treated her negligently in the past  - that unless you’ve experienced chronic pain, you cannot understand it  - that endometriosis is a progressive disease – and for her, it’s gotten worse over time  - that chronic pain is systemic – if it affects one area in your body, it can begin to affect others as you compensate in your behaviors  - that chronic pain makes you work harder  - the importance of an empathetic workplace  - that most doctors really don’t know how to handle chronic illness, and tend to get frustrated when they can’t treat in their own specialty  - that the most caring practitioners she’s encountered have been holistic practitioners – as opposed to traditionally-trained Western doctors  - that she pursues an integrative approach in her treatment  - that her great grandmother was institutionalized…and she wonders if she could have had similar symptoms that were simply misunderstood in her time  - that she uses medical marijuana for pain management, as opposed to opioids  - that a hysterectomy is not a cure for endometriosis  - that endometriosis is consistently underplayed by the medical establishment and beyond  - that the diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis amounts to a public health crisis  - that birth control was more of a hindrance than a help to her, but, as with opioid use – she can’t judge anyone for using these drugs, as needed  - to remember that doctors work for you, and that you are the boss of your body  - that she will always seek pleasure despite her pain, and will never give up sex and orgasms

In June 2016, David Darlington, co-producer of Big Finish Production's Dark Shadows ranges, and I flew to New York to attend the Tarrytown celebrations for Dark Shadows' 50th Anniversary. When the fans visited the Big Finish tables, they all had requests for what they'd like to hear from the range... "Something with Julia", "More Tony and Cassandra", "Quentin and Laura in Eygpt", "More Tony and Cassandra", "What Happened Next to Adam", "More Tony and Cassandra"... All weekend, over and over, we were asked for further adventures of Tony and Cassandra. And it wasn't just us... when we were chatting with Lara Parker and Jerry Lacy about the stories they had both recently been writing for Big Finish they told us they'd been delighted by the requests for more they had been getting.   ...So make more Tony and Cassandra we did. David and fellow co-producer Joseph Lidster got to work on The Tony and Cassandra Mysteries and - with script-editor Alan Flanagan - assembled their team of writers and a company of actors who could take on the guest roles in all four plays. And over in LA Jerry and Lara got ready to crack four more cases, this time joined by Jerry's wife, the multi award-winning Julia Duffy, as Tony's secretary Rita Channing. I attended the UK recording sessions and spoke to Davy, Joe and Alan... and the four writers and four guest actors to see what mysteries I could solve myself.
