Dana Barker works a few jobs and wears a lot of hats - now add dancing to that! This Auburn University senior technical analyst and fill-in TV meteorologist (for stations like WTVM in his hometown of Columbus GA) also stays busy as a football ref and hockey PA announcer for the Columbus River Dragons, who he's representing in the upcoming "Dancing Stars of Columbus," the biggest local fundraiser for the Alzheimer's Association. We talk on this episode about his many roles and how fitness/exercise is a part of those. (2:41) Dana says he's out of his "comfort zip code" learning a dance for this Thursday night's gala. He's been sweating quite a bit while learning/practicing his 90 second routine with pro Tracie Chamblee, who was my partner when I was a "dancing star" 2 years ago. The most important part is raising money for Alzheimer's research and caregivers. You can support Dana or others by giving at this link: https://act.alz.org/site/TR/Gala/GA-Georgia?px=24103747&pg=personal&fr_id=18356. (10:16) This former nerd of mathlete (his term) did not play sports growing up, but is involved with them now like being an experienced ref for high school football - which his broadcast career has helped him with a key part of that job...communication. This president of the local AHSAA association, covering schools in East Alabama, also gets in tens of thousands of steps during each football game as a white hat. It sometimes has to dance on the football field to keep from being run over. (22:04) Dana has also become a student of the game of hockey that he loves now. The longtime PA announcer and DJ for the Columbus River Dragons (formerly the Cottonmouths) talks about why this sport on the ice has hung around this part of Georgia for three decades now. (27:17) This scientist may have the strongest passion though for weather and forecasting! He tells a story about storm chasing and getting close to a funnel 4+ years ago in Eufaula AL. Dana also talks about how the 2019 deadly tornado in Beauregard AL (23 people dead) changed his mindset from working severe weather as an adrenaline rush to a real focus on being a service and saving lives. (37:40) Now, dancing Dana is nervous and excited to hit the dance floor, giving back in the city of Columbus GA where he has deep roots. I close out the pod episode in prayer. 6 years after losing her teen daughter to suicide, an East Alabama mother is only ramping up her crusade to help save the lives of other students through their "Love Like Lexi" project, which is hosting a new event later this week. Check out her emotional, heartbreaking, inspiring story on this episode of "Run The Race," which you can subscribe to or follow for weekly wisdom and testimonies of faith and fitness. (3:20) Andrea Mills' high school senior daughter took her own life on February 6, 2019. What prompted it may shock you. It was a wakeup call for this family...and a warning for so many others, before it's too late. It has to do with purpose, self-worth and empowerment for teenagers. (14:20) Andrea felt major guilt, but God kept her going...and seeing so many others with intrusive thoughts motivated her to go from grieving mom to advocate! Along with sharing their personal story, she has advice for other moms and dads about what to ask your teens and talk to them about. For the last 4 years, she has led a nonprofit named after their daughter where they talk about navigating mistakes/failures (that will happen) at many school assemblies, which have had 80,000 attendees so far, preparing young people and their parents for this fight! Suicide comes with stigma too, to even talk about, but Andrea says we have to use our voices for change. (27:45) Faith is also a centerpiece in the story of Lexi and her family. So is spiritual warfare and people pouring into each other with encouragement (for outsiders and "comfort carriers" too). Andrea also explains the message behind the name "Love Like Lexi." (42:05) And this Thursday February 6, they'll be hosting the tri-city Live Project Crusade at Woodruff Park in Columbus with free food, new inspiring music, the Miracle Riders and other groups - all to help people out of the darkness. More info: https://lovelikelexi.networkforgood.com/events/76105-live-project-crusade. (48:18) Andrew closes the episode out in Prayer for us. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! We had two championship walkoffs this weekend, and we'll talk about both. Plus a wild night at East Alabama and a late model team that should maybe find soemthing else to do on their Fridays and Saturdays in the future, and sprint car driver news of both the winged and non-wing type. Let's go!
As Hurricane Milton heads straight for Florida, and we pray for the people in its path, our guests on the podcast this week is a family that took a trip from East Alabama up to Western North Carolina to use God's love and kayaking...to help with search and rescue, meeting basic needs like food, and more in the wake of the devastation from Hurricane Helene. Subscribe to "Run the Race" for inspiring stories of faith and fitness. (5:13) That includes a world class kayaker who turned pro at age 15. Now 21 years old, Mason Hargrove talks about what he and a few others are doing in kayaks, going to hard-to-reach places to find survivors from Helene and bring things they can for storm relief. He's got some amazing stories! And the missions in his second home of the NC mountains will only continue. (16:13) Mason also talks about the mental fatigue that can happen for volunteers, first responders. He's also using his passion for kayaking to help others in distress, teach the sport too, and dispel misconceptions about kayakers. (23:58) Back in Columbus GA, this young pro kayaker and his family also help active duty military and veterans get on the water for free, teaching them kayaking through the nonprofit Team River Runner. He talks about how the water can be therapeutic for anyone. The 3 time Team USA competitor was in the world championships in his hometown, and will continue competing in the future, as he hopes things will get better and better in NC. You can learn more about their Hargrove Adventures at https://www.instagram.com/hargroveadventures/. (36:00) His mom Melissa Hargrove is also helping in storm ravaged West NC and East TN, from delivering food to teaching camping...to just giving love as the hands and feet of Jesus. (50:31) She is also the Fort Moore Columbus chapter coordinator for Team River Runner: https://www.teamriverrunner.org/get-involved/chapters/columbus. She talks about what they do to help the military and others find community and confidence, while learning how to kayak. And I close out the episode in prayer. After spending nearly 15 years in federal prison, this former longtime drug addict got his freedom and became a pastor for a home church and a nonprofit recovery program that is connected to a business in East Alabama. His is one of many inspiring success stories of faith and fitness that you'll hear on this "Run The Race" podcast. (2:45) Pastor Chris Cloud first chats with me about the effectiveness and encouragement from having worship before work, which is what dozens of men do every early weekday morning at a company called Abel Electric in Salem, AL. He's one of a few pastors that work for the nonprofit Abel Ministries, being a light for former convicts, construction workers, men who need second chances. (10:27) Chris shares his personal story, how he went from foster care to drug addiction to federal prison in 1998 to revival behind bars, where he really learned and practiced how to "Press In" to the things of God and totally focus on Him. He explains what that means and examples of pressing in. He reminds us...it's what we do IN the trial that defines us. He went from discipling others in prison to (23:05) working on the outside - helping men get on the right path, learn a trade to be able to get a job, but how did discernment help them vet the men in their 12 month recovery program? Getting that acceptance and seeing other men freely worship God can also be a "culture shock." (29:15) Chris' passion is raising others up to find their identity in Christ. It's about seeking HIM not things. And they're showing the community that there can be many success stories when faith is involved, these former convicts becoming positive citizens. They're celebrating those at Abel Ministries' first ever Graduation Gala for their recovery program Tuesday night October 1 at 7/6c at First Baptist Church in Opelika. To learn more about what Abel does and how you can help their growing ministry, planning to expand soon, go to https://www.abelministries.org/. (37:55) As for fitness, Chris previously competed in bodybuilding, lost weight while using drugs for a decade, then actually became a certified personal trainer while in prison. He has Biblical advice for those going through dark times, and it won't happen overnight with a "crockpot God." He now uses his redemption story to help other inmates, addicts. (49:36) And he closes out this episode with a powerful prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast, which I hope you'll subscribe to! Share it with your friends. Justin, Dan and Painter recap Auburn football's 2024 A-Day Game. The guys talk about the excellent Jordan-Hare Stadium debuts for several Tigers — especially local standouts Cam Coleman and Towns McGough. They discuss how Coleman and McGough were both surprise additions to the freshman class in their own unique ways and how that could change the Tigers moving forward. Justin and Dan run through their other top performers from the spring game and talk about their biggest storylines of the day. Painter shares a dream. The episode ends with some (now very dated) thoughts on who Arkansas should hire for basketball, as this was recorded hours before the John Calipari news broke. The actor bracket also comes to a thrilling conclusion. Cade Parian of the Parian Lawyers Firm based in Carrolton, GA joins the podcast this week. Cade is 3rd generation Carrolton and he exemplifies what it means to be entrenched in, and serve, his community. We talk about the set up of Cade's firm and the “non-traditional” approach he takes to his cases and his firm. What you see is what you get with Cade and its great to hear how views his practice, his firm and his approach to his clients and community. As Cade says:“I hate to sound like a country song, but a lot of them tell the truth. The people of West Georgia and East Alabama are my people. We get each other. I understand the hardships that a death, injury or arrest can cause these folks. I am one of them. Dig hard. Get dirty. Complete the job.”Cade has recently joined Miles Mediation as a mediator so we discuss that transition in his practice and why he felt a calling to mediate. We learn how he views the mediation process and why it can be so effective. Cade has never met a microphone or a stage that he didn't like. In fact, he may even by the one person out there who talks more than I do. From being an auctioneer to announcing Carrolton HS Football Games to everything in between, Cade talks about his approach to public speaking and the outlet it gives him. As an wannabe sports announcer myself, we go deep into his football broadcasts. We even fit some clothing talk in to the hour … vests and athleisure wear as preferred over suits and ties. Cade has a new born baby at home so we want to especially thank him for shaking off those sleepless nights and coming in and spending time with us. This is a great hour with a great guy that you will not want to miss. As always, this episode is powered by the J. Stein Law Firm – www.jsteinlawfirm.com – a personal injury law firm in Atlanta, GA. Soon, we will mark 22 years since the September 11 horrific attack on America. My guest on this episode is leading an event honoring 9/11 heroes and the soldiers that have died fighting in wars since then. And this veteran is also rucking his way to better mental health. After I give a quick recap of my new (fastest) 5K PR at a midnight race, then what Tim Tebow told myself and a crowd in GA, (6:00) we get to know SSG (Ret) Lee Rollins! He talks about where he was - as a young soldier - on September 11, 2001...eventually deploying to Iraq, Afghanistan which "changes your soul." (13:17) We discuss how he and you can help veterans and Gold Star families (who've lost a loved one in military service) through organizations like the Travis Manion Foundation. That's the beneficiary of a 9/11 heroes 5K run happening all around the nation on Saturday morning September 9, including in Columbus GA (Chattahoochee Valley). You can register now to help with youth programs, especially Gold Star family members: https://www.travismanion.org/events/911-heroes-run/2023-chattahoochee-valley/. (22:38) Travis Manion, the marine LT killed in Iraq, was known for saying "If not me, then who." Lee talks about being proactive, inspiring each other, doing acts of kindness - like Travis. A big passion for this pod guest is (25:12) rucking, good cardio and mental challenge for this veteran who had an injury that forced him into medical retirement. Walking or hiking with that ruck sack is like therapy for him and other vets, but you got to do it the correct way to avoid inury! He's a part or regular group rucks in East Alabama and West Georgia. (37:40) Lee also is focused, on and off his job, to help veterans transition from military to civilian life, especially with getting jobs and their mental health. He talks about what he does through Work for Warriors Georgia, with some inspiring stories! (45:58) And is this retured US Army sniper school instructor...still a good shot? Shooting/hunting, fishing, rucking, other sports and hobbies are also a great way to bond, he says, through tough times of grief and PTSD. (54:10) I close out the episode with a prayer for our military and more. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! Also, write a quick review about it, on Apple podcasts. Each month, our Carrier Connections program features a different X-linked condition with the goal to increase awareness and education of X-linked conditions and how they impact females. This month, we are featuring X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH). XLH is a genetic disease caused by mutations in the PHEX gene. These mutations cause bone cells to secrete increased concentrations of a hormone responsible for inducing phosphate excretion in the kidneys, ultimately resulting in a deficiency of phosphate in the body. This can cause widespread issues throughout the body as phosphate plays an essential role in the proper function of bones and teeth. Most cases of XLH first present in childhood and males and females are considered to be equally affected. Today, we are bringing on two women impacted by XLH: Susan & Kelly. Susan Faitos, L.M.F.T, has been the Executive Director of The XLH Network for the last 4 years. She attended her first Network event in 2015 and immediately started volunteering, then became a board member, and then landed in her current position. Born with a spontaneous case of XLH, Susan is passionate about advocating for families and increasing awareness about all rare diseases. Kelly Rushing is an avid quilter, crafter, and people person. She's been married for almost twenty-one years to the most supportive guy on the planet, Ricky. She lives in East Alabama, after a move from Texas. She is the sixth (or possibly 7th) generation XLHer in her family. She's a dog mom of four very spoiled rescue pups. At forty-one, she is a returning college student, pursuing a degree in marketing and communications. She hopes to continue work in the rare disease community. Learn more about the XLH Network: xlhnetwork.org! Carrier Connections is sponsored by Horizon Therapeutics, Sanofi, and Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical. You need to hear this powerful story from a man who lost his wife to suicide more than a decade ago, a day that still haunts him. He now is spreading kindness and his passion for cycling around Georgia and beyond. He also finds symbolism for life in the extreme sports he jumps into. make sure to subscribe to the "Run The Race" podcast. (4:15) Bike shop owner Jason McKenzie - who's been in charge of "Ride on Bikes" in Columbus GA since 2009 - is a motivated man. In fact, right now, he's in the middle of the "75 Hard" challenge, so here's what he's doing daily until mid-November: https://andyfrisella.com/pages/75hard-info. We talk about that and how he wakes up at 5am to work out and finds balance as a busy business owner. (9:31) Jason tells his love story with Natalie. Earlier this week would've been their 12th wedding anniversary, then (13:25) he is vulnerable in talking about her taking her own life nearly 11 years ago...from his last encounter with her...to a frantic car ride back home...to being a suspect....and coping with the loss a decade later. Jason know he can't go back and fix it, be wants to do better now. (23:08) After his wife's suicide, Jason was mad at God, couldn't be in church anymore, but had an important chat with a pastor who gave him permission to go to God in anger. This bike shop owner says we need to be more open about suicide, forgive ourselves, and be kind to others! That's his main message in a viral video he put out, telling the story of his tragic loss: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQh27SVzDVI. Jason tells an inspiring story for the first time about a friend and business party that stole a lot of money from him, then how a fight turned into a hug, thanks to a vision involved his wife who was gone. It's about giving grace to yourself and others, a Christian principle. (32:08) His love for dirt bikes started at an early age, and since then, he's added skydiving, motorcycles, flying planes, motorbike races. He said the key to these extreme sports is you have to be ALL IN or it's dangerous, so in the now and hyper focused you're not thinking about anything else. Jason, who now realizes depression is real, also talks about how exercise can improve your mental health. His true passion is helping people with their cycling needs, whether they're new on a bike or very experienced. And there are a lot of different kinds of bikes. His shop rents, sells, services them. (41:40) Serving the community is also a priority, as Jason gives a lot to charity and builds special needs bikes. They see the bike shop as a vehicle for changing lives. (47:01) Speaking of sports, Jason ran his first full ironman in 2015, thanks to losing a bet. He argues anyone can do an Ironman, if it's an important enough goal to you. (51:41) Our chat closes with what you can do to help prevent suicides, because he had no warning with Natalie, Jason, who's now on the board for "Love Like Lexi" in East Alabama, says we all have negative thoughts and we all need to work on ourselves. (59:21) "Food for Thought" is about the health benefits of cycling. My "Parting Gift" is a lesson on kindness from the Bible, then my closing Prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast!
