Rafa Sales Ross (Sight & Sound, i_D, BFI, Total Film, Little White Lies) and Marshall Shaffer (Slant Magazine, Decider, /Film, Marshall at the Movies Substack) join Flixwatcher to review Rafa's choice Nine Days. Nine Days (2020) is a fantasy drama written and directed by Edson Oda. It explores themes of the meaning of life, existentialism, morality and spirituality. It stars Winston Duke as Will, a sombre analyst who interviews souls to see if they pass a test to go and become humans. The period of testing lasts nine days, if they are not selected they will cease to exist. Among the souls being interviewed for selection are Zazie Beetz as Emma, Tony Hale as Alexander and Bill Skarsgård as Kane. Will is frequently visited by Benedict Wong's Kyo, a supervisor but also friend who has never been human. Nine Days was unfortunately a victim of the pandemic, it was partially released in the US and it's themes of life, death and suicide was a hard sell for the post-pandemic viewing appetites. The character of Will was inspired by Edson's uncle who died by suicide and one of the one of the selected souls who Will has chosen takes her own life. Recommendability for Nine Days was mixed, mainly due to the themes on life and death, however if you are willing to take a chance you will be richly rewarded with a complex and beautiful film. Strong ratings for engagement and small screen give an impressive overall score of 4.13. With his new drama Acidman now available on VOD in North America, filmmaker Alex Lehmann (Blue Jay, Paddleton, Meet Cute) salutes Nine Days, Edson Oda's metaphysical masterwork starring Winston Duke as a man who spends his afterlife auditioning souls to be born into the world. It sounds heavy, but it's light as air ... and just as essential. Your genial host Norm Wilner is all in on this one.
I had the pleasure of watching acclaimed director, Edson Oda's knockout feature directorial debut, Nine Days. And I absolutely loved it. With the COVID shock, the world has experienced and still going through, this film centers the conversation of existentialism and depicts it quite distinctly. Oda's supernatural drama film, Nine Days was shot at the peak of the Pandemic in isolated Utah, starred Black Panther's star, Winston Duke, Zazie Beetz, Benedict Wong, Tony Hale, Bill Skarsgård, David Rysdahl, and Arianna Ortiz. The film is about an interviewer named Will, who spends his days in a remote outpost watching the live POV on TVs of people going about their lives. He interviews five unborn souls to determine which one can be given life on Earth, until one subject perishes, leaving a vacancy for a new life on earth. Soon, several candidates - unborn souls - arrive at Will's to undergo tests determining their fitness, facing oblivion when they are deemed unsuitable. But Will soon faces his own existential challenge in the form of free-spirited Emma, a candidate who is not like the others, forcing him to turn within and reckon with his own tumultuous past. Fueled by unexpected power, he discovers a bold new path forward in his own life.Oda who is a Sundance Screenwriters Lab Alumni took the film home (to Sundance) and premiered Nine Days there in January 2020. It went on to win the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award in February of 2020 and earned two Independent Spirits Awards nominations. The Japanese-Brazilian director and writer made his start in São Paulo advertising scene and later completed his master's at USC in Film and Production. Oda has produced and directed several films, commercials, and music videos. In 2013, he directed and wrote a short film, Malaria which is about a young mercenary who is hired to kill Death. Malaria combines Origami, Kirigami, Timelapse, nankin illustration, Comic Books and Western Cinema.Besides top-notch commercials for companies like Philips, Movistar, InBev, Whirlpool, Johnson & Johnson, Honda, Nokia, he's also a Latin Grammy-nominated director for best music video Tempos de Maracujá.Nine Days was released in the US on July 30th, 2021 and I am excited to see how well-received it is about to become. I am predicting it may even win an Academy Award. Yes. It is that fantastic! Please enjoy my conversation with Edson Oda.

Winston Duke was born in Trinidad and Tobago and moved to Brooklyn when he was nine. He studied acting at Yale and went on to work mainly in TV during his early twenties. He did not break into movies until he was thirty. That first movie role was M'Baku in 2018's Black Panther. He followed that up with an appearance in Avengers Infinity War, then with a starring role in Jordan Peele's Us. Last year, he starred in a very different movie. It was the Edson Oda film Nine Days. It is a sci-fi drama where Duke stars as an otherworldly entity who interviews souls for the chance to inhabit a body on earth. We are thrilled to have Winston Duke on the show, and just as excited to have our friend and correspondent Jarrett Hill interviewing him.
"Nine Days" is an unusual and remarkable film. A kind of supernatural fable about aspiring souls enduring a rigorous interview process in order to get chosen for life. It is an incredible debut from gifted filmmaker Edson Oda, and we are very proud to see this film finally get a theatrical release, as it was a recipient of the Dolby Institute Fellowship, which gives independent films funding to mix their films in Dolby Atmos®. And we couldn't be more pleased with how this film turned out! We recently spoke with writer and director Edson Oda, supervising sound designer Mac Smith, and re-recording mixer Brandon Proctor, about how they managed to craft such a thought-provoking film which asks some of the most provocative questions about existence itself. But it does so in a very subtle way, as the film invites audiences to craft their own interpretations and meanings. This was all very much by design: "As a filmmaker, we always want to give enough [information] and not give more than that. And I'm not just talking about storytelling. I think it's [the same] for sound or images – or anything – when you're telling a story. You want to leave some gaps, so the audience can fill in those gaps with their imagination. I think that's, for the most part, the thing that can happen when someone has contact with any piece of art, or any piece of work, or anything that they see: 'Okay, now I'm going to complete this with my assumptions, with my images, with my history, my imagination.'" — Edson Oda, Director, "Nine Days" The film just entered a wider release, so https://www.sonyclassics.com/film/ninedays/ (be sure to check out "Nine Days" in a Dolby Cinema while you still can). ‘Nine Days' is the story of a reclusive man who conducts a series of interviews with human souls for a chance to be born. Edson Oda talks to Write On about the challenges of being a Writer-Director: "You have to think with different hats. An instructor at Sundance just told me you wear two hats: one hat while you're writing, and then when you're directing, another hat, another color… and not think of that piece as something you wrote, but as something that's there, and now you can change whatever you want." Edson goes on to discuss how it is important to love the process of creating: "Do it not because of the result, but more because you love doing it. Write a story as only you can write… if you could just make one movie, and nothing else, what movie would you make? And don't care about what people say, just do it." What is a soul? Where do souls come from? And is life even worth living if everything feels hopeless? These are questions that are tackled in “Nine Days,” the debut feature from filmmaker Edson Oda. On this week's episode, we welcome Edson Oda, director of Nine Days. This is his first feature film.
What if souls had to interview to be born? That's the premise of the first film on our docket this week, Edson Oda's moving drama NINE DAYS (1:59), starring Winston Duke and Zazie Beetz. Next, we review FEAR STREET: Part Three - 1666 (16:14), the satisfying conclusion to Leigh Janiak's Netflix horror trilogy, which we've really enjoyed discussing over the past two episodes. We wrap up with Jaume Collet-Serra's JUNGLE CRUISE (37:18), the latest Disney ride turned movie starring Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson that borrows too heavily from other adventure films, including some of Disney's. And on this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we discuss the winner of our video game movie poll: the 2006 Christophe Gans film SILENT HILL!
Written and directed by Edson Oda, NINE DAYS is set in the space immediately before birth. As an arbiter for new souls, it is Will's (Winston Duke) job to decide who gets the opportunity to live. After his world is shaken by the death of one of his clients, he must then select a new applicant and send them on their way. While many of them may be adequate, it's Emma (Zazie Beetz) who Will finds most intriguing, but he isn't sure that she's the right one for the journey. In this 1on1, we speak to Oda about what makes humanity so unique and balancing the tough questions.
Filmmaker Braden King ("Here") makes his first appearance with "The Evening Hour" a dramatic feature placed in Appalachia. Also, editor Michael Taylor, A.C.E. makes his 4th visit to the show with his latest project, "Nine Days" directed by upcoming guest Edson Oda. Both films were Sundance hits and open Friday, July 30th.
Kenny and Mike discuss the new theatrical film Nine Days, written and directed by first time filmmaker Edson Oda, who joins Mike and Kenny on the episode. Edson is of Japanese decent and was raised in Brazil. A transcript of the interview portion is available on the Faithspotting website. Note: The story deals with the issue of suicide and Edson discusses the suicide of a family member and his journey in understanding his relative and himself in that process. Nine Days is the story of Will, (Winston Duke) a man who lived and struggled on earth, died and now has a position choosing which newly created souls will receive the opportunity for life on earth. This decision occurs whenever there is a death among those souls Will had selected and whose lives he follows. With the tragic death of a favored soul Will selected for life, Will must select from the souls who are sent to his house. Each soul is in adult form with the body and personality they will develop. Will must decide whether to send those "tough" enough to survive in the world or those who might play a part of lessoning the suffering of others. Faith Issues Spotted: The film presents a foundational and stark choice among people of faith, to live through the struggles and darkness of life with Paul's "Rejoice in the Lord Always" spirit from Philippians, or the worldly spirit that sees darkness overcoming the Light that is Christ and the hope of the Gospel. What are the costs of each perspective? What is the Righteous choice of candidates? A discussion of Christ figure(s) Recovery of Joy in the midst of grief and loss.
Writer/director Edson Oda's first feature NINE DAYS premiered at Sundance 2020, where it won the Screenwriting Award and was acquired by Sony Pictures Classics. A dream come true for a first-time filmmaker, right? The film, which is about social isolation and deep reflection on the meaning of life, was all set to debut theatrically later that year… until COVID-19 had other plans. And socially isolated all of us, and made all of us reflect on the meaning of life. This week it finally hits theaters (NY and LA on July 30, everywhere else in the US on August 6), and if you like ambitious films that ask existential questions, NINE DAYS will have been worth the wait. NFS Founder Ryan Koo talked with Oda and producer Jason Michael Berman (who also produced Koo's own first feature, AMATEUR) about the Herculean task of getting a first feature made — especially one as ambitious as NINE DAYS. In this episode, we talk about… Director Edson Oda's background and early career, including screenwriting. How film-writing contests can be useful for the purposes of getting a deadline and some external pressure, and less for the results. The process of going through the Sundance Writers' Lab, and actually getting a film made out of it. How the casting process for NINE DAYS went, especially given that the film was unfinanced at the time. How the team eventually got financing for their movie and the hurdles they faced. Oda's preparation process for filming his first feature film and why prep is one of the most important parts of the process. Why Oda didn't do a ton of rewriting during filming. What surprised Oda the most about the experience filming NINE DAYS. Why you really need to believe in yourself, be resourceful, and not give up when you're trying to get a feature film made. Fun stories from the (often stressful) filmmaking process. I interview Edson Oda, the Japanese-Brazilian writer and director of the profound film, Nine Days. The story centers on a man, played by Winston Duke (Black Panther), who interviews and judges five souls to see who will be granted embodied life on earth. A fun conversationalist, Oda talks about his Catholic upbringing and how artists use spiritual metaphors to create meaning for humans. We also discuss what he likes to read and watch for inspiration and how his film uses empty spaces to open up interpretative possibilities.
