George Harrison's tribute to Smokey Robinson, "When Smokey Sings", isn't just Rob Sheffield's favourite solo Beatles tune. The Motown legend, arguably best known for covering "So Bad", is a huge part of "Beatles '64", the Mouse's latest entry in the world of Beatles documentaries. 1964 is THE seminal year in Beatles history, so surely this Scorcese-produced doc provides a comprehensive look at the full year? Clearly, the talking heads are relevant and used sparingly? Obviously, this release comes in concert with expanded, cleaned up footage improving on what we all really want, a reissued "The First U.S. Visit"? Our own Medved and (Mister) Roeper explore the highs and lows of yet another Beatles holiday gift, and along the way they ask:

From his earliest days as a songwriter, Paul McCartney was interested in love songs. But by the time of Wing's 1976 album “At the Speed of Sound” McCartney had become tired of critics suggesting that was all he wrote. And so he wrote the album's lead single, a defiant anthem about the importance of love in our lives, and named it “Silly Love Songs.” Through discussing this song with Paul Muldoon, McCartney also touches on some of the other love songs in his catalogue: “Can't Buy Me Love,” “All My Loving,” “I Will” and one he wrote for his wife, Nancy —”My Valentine.” “McCartney: A Life in Lyrics” is a co-production between iHeart Media, MPL and Pushkin Industries. The series was produced by Pejk Malinovski and Sara McCrea; written by Sara McCrea; edited by Dan O'Donnell and Sophie Crane; mastered by Jason Gambrell with assistance from Jake Gorski and sound design by Pejk Malinovski. To celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the Beatles' first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, our guests revisit the evening that the Beatles graced their living rooms for the first time, on this special episode of Everything Fab Four. These Beatles lovers include Steven van Zandt from Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, R&B singer Darlene Love, actor Billy Bob Thornton, and even one lucky audience member from that first Ed Sullivan performance. It's almost impossible to imagine what it was like to be at ground zero of American Beatlemania on February 7, 1964, when the group landed at New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport, which had been renamed some fifty days earlier in honor of the fallen leader. The band's Pan Am flight was met with the screams and fanfare of some 5,000 people, whom the Beatles claimed to have heard—incredible as it may seem—even as the plane was taxiing along the runway.  As writer Stephen Glynn presciently remarked, “The spirit of Camelot, shot down in Dallas, Texas, had flown over from Liverpool, England, and the unprecedented euphoria that greeted the group seemed part of an expiation, a nation shaking itself out of its grief and mourning.” There is little question that the Beatles' timing in the history of the United States was uncanny, as well as a welcome respite from the national malaise, but one cannot overlook the power of marketing in a new media era unlike any that the postwar world had ever seen.  Capitol Records had saturated the city with posters announcing, “The Beatles Are Coming,” while New York's WMCA and WINS radio stations had given away T-shirts—and, rumor has it, $1 each—to thousands of teenagers who greeted the Beatles that Friday afternoon on the JFK tarmac. Released in December 1963 by Capitol, “I Want to Hold Your Hand” had sold more than one million copies by mid-January, an astounding feat for a group that had been largely unheard of on American shores scarcely a month before.  On Sunday, February 9, the Beatles launched into a spirited rendition of “All My Loving” to begin their set on the Ed Sullivan Show before some 73 million television viewers, a figure that accounted for nearly 40 percent of the population of the United States at that time. It was popular music's big bang, and like that incredible instance in the birth of the universe some 13 billion years ago, it is still resonating. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/everythingfabfour/support

Hello hello hello and welcome to the Better Each Day podcast where recording artists' share their backstories and their music and any embarrassing moments they care to share. I'm Bruce Hilliard and thank you for being here. The '60s — an era when television was still a modern marvel, and viewers only had a few channels to choose from — TV variety shows were one of the most important influences of pop culture. Thus, Beatles fans were especially eager to show their support for their favorite boys by watching them on the small screen whenever they scored a televised gig. The band's February 9, 1964 performance on The Ed Sullivan Show was a particularly historic moment. According to the show's official website, it was their first live American television appearance.  The boys played five of their most popular songs at the time: "All My Loving," "Till There Was You," "She Loves You," "I Saw Her Standing There," and "I Want to Hold Your Hand." The performance drew 73 million people to their TV screens. I love the song list because it starts out with an up tempo, new to American ears “All My Loving” and immediately segues into “Till There Was You”, a ballad from a popular broadway hit and movie…a song that would prevent the parents from switching the TV to Disney.  It worked like nothing our generation could have ordered from a genie. Annoying enough parents (check), introducing new music (check) and making it look so f'ing fun and easy everyone watching wanted to be part of it. When I say “annoying the parents” I mean that in a way that points out that the Beatles never harshed anyone and didn't intend Armageddon by wearing their hair a hair longer than the normal Brylcreem buzz of the day and the radical suits and ties. Punkers in a tux. In honor of the iconic broadcast's 58th anniversary in 2022, the Better Each Day Podcast collected snips from the anals (I shouldn't go for that one any more) of time for a scrapbook of memorabilia. We had just witnessed a seismic cultural shift."  Fans started their own unofficial clubs, as well. Many of them amassed private collections of Beatles memorabilia. One Oregon club possessed a whopping "30 Beatle books, 9 Beatle records, over 2,000 Beatle bubblegum cards (some are duplicates) and 3,000 Beatles pictures." Beatles fans who wanted to show off their affinity for the band with merch had a vast array of products to choose from. According to Consequence of Sound, in 1964, the Wall Street Journal declared that Beatlemaniacs across America were buying "Beatle wigs, Beatle dolls, Beatle egg cups and Beatle T-shirts, sweatshirts and narrow-legged pants." Beatle wigs? That's right. Plenty of the band's biggest admirers saw them as the perfect accessory to sport at concerts. The pop-on mop-tops were so popular that Lowell Toy Company, their officially licensed manufacturer, once told a reporter, "We're turning out about 15,000 a day, but we've got a backlog of 500,000 orders."  The wigs were only the tip of the iceberg. According to American Profile, young Beatles lovers in the '60s could also purchase officially licensed Beatles Halloween costumes, complete with flame-retardant masks. Beatles-themed board games, stockings printed with the boys' faces, Beatles-branded hairspray, and "Big Beat Beatles Bongos" were available, as well. My personal goal is to become famous, say something the journalist can spin, make everyone like me and have a Pez dispenser mass produced in my likeness. Accents and trends: Start with kids. Someone didn't come here from England in the 1700s and suddenly proclaim (with a thick southern accent) “Hey there whisker biscuit, what say we pop a few poppers and Q up some ribs!” No. It's the next generation of Americans, those little snots, that lead our societies off on their new journeys to the latest ways. In this case, there had been a world war just over a decade prior, our president had been...

Vuelven los años 80. Ahora 80s. ¿Parece fácil no?.

The Beatles performed before 18,000 fans at the Convention Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on August 30, 1964. Among those in attendance were Barry's aunt, Carole Hummel, and family friends Carol "Cris" Crisafulli Johnson, Joan Bacon, and Marie Falzone. Despite the fact that Barry has been a huge Beatles fan since high school, he finally found out about this while discussing our recent Tripping Walruses episode with his aunt! The night before the concert, they stayed at the Lafayette Motel. At 2:15 PM, they left in the back of a fish truck, and a short distance from the Convention Hall, they switched to their waiting tour bus. The Beatles performed their standard 12-song set: Twist And Shout, You Can't Do That, All My Loving, She Loves You, Things We Said Today, Roll Over Beethoven, Can't Buy Me Love, If I Fell, I Want To Hold Your Hand, Boys, A Hard Day's Night, and Long Tall Sally. After the show, The Beatles left the venue in a laundry truck, as their limousine was too conspicuous. That night, they stayed at the Marquis De Lafayette Hotel in nearby Cape May, where they stayed for a few days prior to their September 2nd concert in Philadelphia. During their stay in Atlantic City, John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote two songs for the Beatles For Sale album: Every Little Thing and What You're Doing. I am assisted in this venture by my brother and resident Beatles expert, Paul Abbott, with a deep knowledge of the Beatles and the wider context in which they operated. Each episode we explore and score 5 songs from the Beatles full recording catalogue. The songs are drawn at random to try and avoid any album or era prejudices skewing the results. Charming, funny, provocative, hugely talented and already seasoned stage professionals—The Beatles were perfect for television during an era when sales of television sets were skyrocketing. And TV was also the ideal, all-encompassing promotional tool for the Fab Four. So, it was a symbiotic relationship. At first, they were more than happy to not only perform their songs, but also participate in comedy sketches… until they no longer needed to. This show examines the group’s halcyon TV years—and provides viewer sound recordings of several ultra-rare, ‘long lost’ broadcasts. Beatles guitars! We have four guitarists on to talk about Beatles songs in terms of the guitar parts in this plus-sized episode!  Topics include: The ninth chords that ends a lot of the early songs; the iconic beginnings of A Hard Day's Night / Day Tripper / I Feel Fine and more; George solo in All My Loving; cool chords on Michelle; sick Paul solo on Taxman; dual guitars on She Said She Said; easy songs to play around a campfire; the clawhammer picking on the White Album; George's stellar contributions to Octopus' garden; She's So Heavy More! Were we up to the technical challenge of recording four guitars in the host's living room with whatever cords people brought to the session? Not always! But the love for the music stays strong throughout! Plus we do our own version of the Abbey Road trading guitars jam --- at the one hour and twenty minute mark! Necessary? No! Fun? Yes! And as with all our jams it has that first take authenticity! (Order of soloists: Joel, then Brett, then Mike with James playing rhythm). Panelists: James Bachman, Mike Carlson, Will Hines, Brett Morris, Joel Spence.

Screw It, We're Just Gonna Talk About the Beatles

We get into the Beatles' second studio album "With the Beatles." We talk about how this album is a sort of B-side to the entire first album, and how amazing the song "All My Loving" is, and the amazing songs that were left off the album ("From Me To You" / "She Loves You" / "I Want to Hold Your Hand"). Was the intensity of Beatlemania in America a reaction to the assassination of the president? Or was the younger generation just so happy to tell its parents that time had passed them by? We also somehow talk about 9/11. I forget how that happened. Panelists: Will Hines, Curtis Gwinn, Joel Spence, Ariana Lenarsky.
