This week we chat with Katherine Marsh, author of The Lost Year, a finalist for the 2023 National Book Award for Young People's Literature. I recently discovered this book after one of our book club members selected another Katherine Marsh book, Nowhere Boy, for our August read. The Lost Year is middle-grade historical fiction and it is super timely because part of it is set in Ukraine in the 1930s. The story introduced me to a topic in Ukraine history I knew nothing about called the Holodomor. Katherine tells us all about her novel which was inspired by her relationship with her grandmother who was from Ukraine. It is a perfect book selection if you are curious about Ukrainian history that influences current events; reading this book would also allow you to check off having read something for Middle Grade March. For our book recommendations in this episode, we're talking about books in which cats are a central part of the story. We have some nonfiction selections, as well as literary fiction and graphic novels that will definitely appeal to your inner cat. If you don't love cats, you can check out these books anyway for their compelling stories OR you can wait around for Amy to muscle Carrie into a future dog episode. “The two most important things you can do as a writer are to make people wonder what will happen next and to understand why it matters. - Katherine MarshEvery moment of every day, our attention is the subject of a battle. As adults, we struggle to focus on the 'right' things—so how can we expect our kids to? With this in mind, capturing and holding young readers' attention is a key focus for Katherine Marsh in her books. But she's determined to do so without sacrificing intellectual depth. Striking this balance has become her mission: to keep readers on the edge of their seats, while delivering something meaningful. To achieve that, she draws on her journalism background and the early influence of her grandmother's captivating stories from Ukraine.Katherine Marsh is an award-winning author best known for her novels “The Night Tourist,” “Nowhere Boy,” and “The Lost Year,” a National Book Award finalist for young people's literature. Her stories often unfold against the backdrop of the harsh, historical, or present realities, but as she notes, all of her stories are also mysteries. They have always had that hook! Her work has earned her several honors in addition to being a National Book Award finalist, including the Edgar Award for Best Juvenile Mystery, along with being a New York Times notable selection. In this episode, Katherine explores ways to address the setback in children's reading caused by the pandemic and dives into her article on the topic for The Atlantic. Katherine also recounts a jarring story passed down to her and considers the profound role of the story in raising her. She also reflects on how her time as a journalist has impacted how she approaches that craft of storytelling.Fun fact about Katherine: we attended the same high school! In fact, so did my script editor, Josia. It was a boarding school where we all did not know one another but shared the experience of being atypical students. Because of that coincidence and the fact that, as Katherine says, “kids love boarding school stories,” she curated her reading challenge, "Boarding School Ties,” which includes books that all take place in or are about boarding schools. I am so excited to say that my guest on the GWA Podcast is the esteemed photographer, filmmaker and director, Sam Taylor-Johnson. Born in Croydon and educated at Goldsmiths, where she was among the stars of the 1990s British art scene Taylor Johnson made her name with her non-narrative films, such as Method in Madness, where a young man appears to be having a nervous breakdown on camera; Hysteria of a young woman miming in hysterical laughter; or Breach of a girl who cries in silence – art that seems to be about our shared internal pain, and the performance we all put on in our everyday lives. In 1997, she won Most Promising Artist at the Venice Biennale, and in 1998 was up for the Turner Prize. Sadly, cancer took over at aged 30, an experience that no doubt shifted the output of work in the early 2000s. Still Life was a film that showed decaying fruit, and others explored the threshold between life and death, fantasy and reality, and what it meant to confront our own mortality. She has especially looked at the real lives of celebrities, from an almost mythic lens, such as her film David, of David Beckham sleeping at the National Portrait Gallery – that I remember seeing aged 10 – and her incredibly moving series of famous male actors crying, from Philip Seymour Hoffman to Robin Williams – that is currently on view at the V&A's Fragile Beauty exhibition, a phrase that so perfectly sums up so much of Taylor Johnson's work, the complexity of performance and artifice, and the glamour and beauty of pop often masked by darkness. Since 2009, she has become one of Britain's foremost movie directors, making her feature debut with Nowhere Boy, a portrait of the early life of John Lennon, and most recently, Back to Black, that zooms in on Amy Winehouse fragile but enormously celebrated life, showing her as the human she was, who loved most in the world people and music… I can't help but see the correlation between Taylor Johnson's fine art work and her movie work: that deep interest in intense stories that appear on the outer side as one, and on the inner as another. She gets to the core of the human condition through her work, and leaves us contemplating our own existence, how we view those whose music, voice and lyrics we know like they're in the DNA of our fingertips, and I really couldn't be more excited to find out more. -- LINKS: Back to Black: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt21261712/ Nowhere Boy: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1266029/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_q_nowhere%2520boy A Million Little Pieces: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0427543/ Fragile Beauty at V&A: https://www.vam.ac.uk/exhibitions/fragile-beauty-photographs-from-the-sir-elton-john-and-david-furnish-collection Crying Men series: https://hickeyguy.wordpress.com/2014/09/13/crying-men/ JFK photograph by Gary Winogrand: https://www.moma.org/collection/works/113229 David @ NPG: https://www.npg.org.uk/beyond/exhibitions/partnership/2019/coming-home-david-beckham -- THIS EPISODE IS GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED BY THE LEVETT COLLECTION: https://www.famm.com/en/ https://www.instagram.com/famm.mougins // https://www.merrellpublishers.com/9781858947037 Follow us: Katy Hessel: @thegreatwomenartists / @katy.hessel Sound editing by Nada Smiljanic Music by Ben Wetherfield
As part of the so-called Britart generation of the early 1990's, artist Sam Taylor-Wood, as she was then known, made her name with photographic and video pieces. Diagnosed with colon cancer in 1997, and then breast cancer three years later, she addressed her treatment and recovery in artworks she made at the time. She moved into filmmaking with her first feature Nowhere Boy, about the life of the young John Lennon in 2009. Other cinematic projects have included adaptations of the E L James novel 50 Shades Of Gray, the James Frey memoir A Million Little Pieces and, most recently, the Amy Winehouse biopic Back To Black.Sam tells John Wilson about the experience of first seeing the Rothko Seagram paintings at the Tate gallery when she was nine years old, and the impact that they had on her in her creative imagination. Being introduced to Andy Warhol films such as Chelsea Girls and Empire made her realise that art and cinema are deeply intertwined and went on to influence her style as a director. John Cassavetes' A Woman Under the Influence was the first film that made Sam want to be a cinematic filmmaker and she also reveals how Oscar-winning director Anthony Minghella encouraged her to make her debut short film Love You More. Producer: Edwina Pitman
Sam and Aaron Taylor-Johnson's 24-year age gap defies all societal and gender norms. They met and fell in love when Sam—a 42-year-old, newly divorced mother of two—made her directorial debut with the film “Nowhere Boy,” starring an up-and-coming, 18-year-old Aaron. Within a year, they were engaged and expecting, and 15 years later, still seem genuinely happy against all odds and expectations. Is age really just a number? This controversial couple defies all the social constructs we're comfortable with. With Aaron being only a few years older than his adopted “daughter,” we can't help but bring up the Cullens and our weird, complicated Sims families. ***** This is a teaser for a bonus episode. The film "Back to Black" has been described as a never-seen-before glimpse into Amy Winehouse's rise to fame and the release of her groundbreaking album of the same name, which won five Grammys and sold 16 million copies. The pop star, who died in 2011, is played by Marisa Abela, known for her role in the banking TV drama "Industry". The movie is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, who brought us "Fifty Shades of Grey" and "Nowhere Boy". Eve Jackson sat down with them in Paris.
Sam Taylor-Johnson is about to release Back to Black, her second music biopic following 2009's Nowhere Boy. So naturally Pop Screen decided to review... her EL James adaptation? Yeah, why not, it's got Rita Ora in it. Returning co-host Joe did a lot of Ritasearch for this podcast and was delighted to remember that she only has about a minute of screentime. Not that there's any shortage of other things to talk about when it comes to 50 Shades of Grey. Its status as a cultural phenomenon, its dubious sexual politics, its troubled production and long list of nearly-stars... all of this and more is covered in this dangerously erotic edition of Pop Screen. We also explain why Christian Grey's chauffeur is the secret hero of these movies, and reveal what the Frenchest film ever made is. It's not this one. This week @weheardwonders take a trip to the movies discussing the good, the bad, the ugly and best-in-show in the genre that is The Music Biopic! Joining Iain and Andrew to separate the Hits from the Misses, the Curios from the Admirable Failures is film enthusiast and expert in American cultural studies, Fraser McCallum. We identify and dissect the top tropes used in the telling of so many of these often-mythic tales of rock'n'roll excess (from Ray and Walk The Line to Bohemian Rhapsody and Elvis), as well as considering the artsier, more idiosyncratic (Nowhere Boy, I'm Not There) and endearingly scrappy, British (24-Hour Party People, Good Vibrations) ends of the genre. Shout-outs are also given to some of our favourite not-quite-biopics. We would love to hear from you, dear listener - do you agree with our analysis? What are your go-to music biopics? Which ones did we miss out? And what would you like to hear us discuss next? A wheezing grinding sound fades away as we close in on Christopher Eccleston wandering around in a moptop on the set of "A Hard Day's Night". Perhaps it is the plot for a lost episode of "Doctor Who", but it is also early on in the telefilm "Lennon Naked". Jon and I review the film, compare the reenacted scenes to their real-life counterparts (surprise! It's pretty good, for the most part), continuing on from last week's look the theatrical "Nowhere Boy".
The first of two weeks covering some John Lennon biopics from the 2009-2010 era. We start with "Nowhere Boy", a deep dive into the psychology of John Lennon as viewed through the lens of his half-sister Julia Dykins. A surprising amount of time is taken up covering the romantic relationships between older women and much younger men!

British filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson sat down with HFPA journalist Elisabeth Sereda to talk about her latest film A Million Little Pieces, co-writing with & directing her husband Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and the strains of low-budget filmmaking. They also talk about Aaron's home life during the filming of Noctural Animals, the pressures of the John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy as her directorial debut, her vision for, experience of, and challenges with directing the first Fifty Shades of Grey film, and more.
To say Aaron Taylor-Johnson puts 100% into every role is actually a bit of an understatement. He starts to live as the character months before filming begins. Then, when it's over, it takes him months to "shed the layers" of the character before returning to himself. This might sound like a bunch of hooey, until you actually see the brilliance of the work and the fullness of transformation. He got his big break with “Kick-Ass,” spent some time in the Marvel universe, played John Lennon in “Nowhere Boy,” then won a Golden Globe for playing a psychopath in “Nocturnal Animals.” Now he stars in “A Million Little Pieces,” a film he and his wife, director Sam Taylor-Johnson, co-wrote together based on the James Frey book. In this episode he talks about his intense inhabiting process, its benefits and some of its ramifications on other aspects of his life, plus much more!
Joining British GQ’s chief content officer Jonathan Heaf for a mid-morning pick-me-up at London’s White City House is Sam Taylor-Johnson. First rising to prominence in the 1990s as one of the Young British Artists, Taylor-Johnson has since carved out a career as a filmmaker, making her debut with the celebrated John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy. Over tea and cake, Heaf and Taylor-Johnson discuss everything from life after art to Taylor-Johnson’s latest film A Million Little Pieces.

A lot of people believe that Europe is a paradise of equality, but they're having the same problems as we are. Katherine may or may not have known this when she left the US. She certainly knows about it now, because she's written a book around the topic, Nowhere Boy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On this episode we talk about two less-often-discussed Beatles movies: Nowhere Boy (2009) and Backbeat (1994). These are not Beatles movies as in the Beatles were in them, but that are Beatles movies in that they are fictionalized accounts of the Beatles real lives. First we discuss Nowhere Boy, which shows John Lennon in high school, meeting his reckless but inspiring birth mother Julia, learning to play banjo and guitar, meeting Paul McCartney and coming to terms with his strict but reliable Aunt Mimi. Then we get into Backbeat, which shows the life of Stu Sutcliffe, John's friend in Liverpool art college, who was the Beatles original bass player and who joins the band when they go to Hamburg. Plus we talk about the very cool band of 1994 grungy all-stars that got assembled to make this movie's soundtrack! Although both movies have their flaws, I think big Beatles fans would love them both and in this episode we get into why! My panel for this episode is Brian Hines (Sea Tea theatre in Hartford, Ct and brother of the host) and Tara Ariano (previously.tv web site and podcasting network). As I note in the introduction, the recording quality for this ep is a bit less than usual. We were all in different cities and I was using some new software. I didn't configure everything exactly right. Everyone is still easy to understand, but you can hear that we are all on phones, etc. My apologies!
Penny Greenhalgh returns to the farm after leaving boarding school to find that she has become a Nowhere Boy (any relation to the biographical film about John Lennon is, Penny would like to emphasise, unintentional and unfortunate).
A lot of assumptions have been made about Aaron Taylor-Johnson. He became tabloid fodder simply because of his engagement at the age of 19 to noted filmmaker Sam Taylor-Wood. This wasn’t the career playbook for an actor on the rise thanks to diverse works like “Nowhere Boy” and “Kick-Ass”. In this conversation on “Happy Sad Confused”, his podcast debut, Taylor-Johnson opens up about what it’s been like to be scrutinized and judged simply for falling in love and wanting to be a young father. Currently starring in the critically hailed Tom Ford thriller, “Nocturnal Animals”, the 26 year old reveals he never harbored a wish to play a superhero despite playing two already. Plus he pulls the curtain back on what it’s like to be “media trained” and why his big moment with Bruce Springsteen got ruined. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Michael Berkeley meets Turner Prize-nominated conceptual artist and film-maker Sam Taylor-Wood, whose latest work, Nowhere Boy, documents the early life of John Lennon. Much of her work has been inspired by music, from opera to Bach, and her choices range from the opening of Gluck's opera Orfeo ed Euridice, the Kyrie from Mozart's Requiem and the opening of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony to an Indian raga and Nina Simone singing Wild Is the Wind as well as film scores by Ry Cooder and Michael Nyman. As a supplement to our fifth episode, Graeme Burk and Rob Jones talk with Shannon Dohar about films that have been about the formation of the Beatles or the relationships between the Beatles, particularly 1979's The Birth of the Beatles, 1990's The Hours and the Times, 1994's Backbeat, 2001's Two of Us and 2009's Nowhere Boy. Graeme, Rob and Shannon discuss what makes a film about the Beatles compelling, how historically accurate does such a film have to be (and how close to the actual musician does a portrayal have to be) and what are the best films about the fab four they've seen.
Carla, Jacob and Jess bring you a brand new episode of Film Reel. This week they discuss the new James Bond film ‘Spectre’, Tim Burtons ‘Beetlejuice’ and the John Lennon biopic ‘Nowhere Boy’. As part of the BBC's Classical Voice season, Michael Berkeley's guest is singer Alison Goldfrapp. Alison Goldfrapp burst onto the music scene fifteen years ago, as lead singer in the duo Goldfrapp with the debut album Felt Mountain. Rock critics reached for adjectives such as 'lush', 'symphonic', 'epic'. Since Felt Mountain there have been five more hit albums, moving across pop, dance, electronic music - but each featuring the same extraordinary voice. Alongside the six gold albums, Goldfrapp also composed the soundtrack for the John Lennon film, Nowhere Boy, and the music for the recent Medea, starring Helen McCrory, at the National Theatre. In Private Passions, Alison Goldfrapp talks to Michael Berkeley about finding her voice, and about the childhood that inspired her. Her father ('a closet hippy') used to take all six children out into the Hampshire woods, and make them sit still and listen, for hours; when there was a full moon he would drive them to the sea, for a night swim. The first time Goldfrapp heard her own voice soar was as a schoolgirl at the Alton Convent School in Hampshire, and encouraged by the nuns, she sang higher and higher until she felt a kind of 'buzzing' in her head: an unforgettable experience. Goldfrapp chooses music which features a choir of extraordinary women's voices, the Bulgarian State Radio female choir, and Jessye Norman singing Fruhling from Strauss's Four Last Songs. She also chooses Atmospheres by Gyorgy Ligeti - music she finds very frightening - and celebrates both Mahler, and Ennio Morricone's film music, especially his score to an erotic thriller from 1969, Dirty Angels. And she reveals the music her partner Lisa Gunning sends her to listen to when they're apart. Produced by Elizabeth Burke A Loftus Production for BBC Radio 3.

Film editor Lisa Gunning (Seven Psychopaths, Nowhere Boy) has made her directing debut with a collection of films inspired by songs from Tales Of Us, the stunning new album from Goldfrapp. Tales Of Us is a 30 minute journey through the individual stories of Stranger, Laurel, Jo, Drew and Annabel, which interconnect subtly, sharing themes of love, loss, madness and identity to take us on a unique musical and cinematic journey. Speaking to Jemma Desai (I Am Dora) after a screening of the films, Lisa explained how the relationship with Alison Goldfrapp came about, how Lynch and Bergman influenced them both, and how a Los Angeles strip club provided the unlikely source of one of the films' actors. She also spoke about learning from the late Anthony Minghella and how a 'fierce logic' underpins the films' dreaminess. Recorded at the ICA on 18 January 2014.

L'ultimo esorcismo, film dell'orrore in stile Paranormal Activity e Tre all'improvviso, commedia sentimental/nuzial/familiare.

Nowhere Boy is a dramatized account of the young John Lennon -- who would have turned 70 tomorrow. It's a modest film, and an enjoyable one... Disney's Secretariat is a family film about one of the fastest racehorses in history, but it stumbles along beneath the weight of leaden life lessons...

Paul McCartney to ‘Nowhere Boy' Star: John Lennon Never Punched Me! Do you want to know secret? Nowhere Boy, the new John Lennon biopic opening Oct. 8—on the eve of what would've been the rock icon's 70th birthday—isn't 100 percent accurate. So says fellow Beatle Paul McCartney. Interviewed on Milling About, Nowhere Boy star Aaron Johnson discusses Sir Paul's reaction to the flick. “Paul said he loved it and thought it was great,” the British actor tells host Robin Milling— but then adds: “He said, ‘I can't remember Lennon ever punching me in the face!' during one of the scenes. But if that's the only thing he was worried about, then we're off.” Aaron also asked John's widow, Yoko Ono, how she… (To read the full story, click here.)
