The 2017 slaughterhouse escape of six steers turned "The St. Louis Six" into animal rescue celebrities and inspired an expansion of the California-based nonprofit Gentle Barn to Missouri. Eight years later, the sanctuary's abrupt closure this past October has left its former volunteers and staff feeling abandoned. An investigation by St. Louis on the Air producer Danny Wicentowski goes inside the final days of the sanctuary's existence and the aftermath of its closure. The investigation confirms the deaths of five former residents of Missouri's Gentle Barn in the just four months since its closure. Gentle Barn co-founder Ellie Laks defends the decision to close and addresses the recent animal deaths at the nonprofit's Tennessee sanctuary.

If you've never thought of cows as intuitive healers, this episode just might change your mind. Ellie Laks is the founder of The Gentle Barn Foundation, a national organization that rescues and rehabilitates abused and discarded farm animals. She is the creator of cow hug therapy and, as she explains in her book by the same name, she has learned amazing lessons from these animals about life, death, and everything in between. She's here today to share some of those lessons with us. In this episode, you'll learn: The origins of Cow Hug Therapy. How farm animals can aid in emotional healing. What we can learn from barnyard animals and why they're such great teachers.
In Cow Hug Therapy: How the Animals at the Gentle Barn Taught Me about Life, Death, and Everything in Between (New World Library, 2024), Ellie Laks recounts the extraordinary journey that started with her first teacher, Buddha -- not the religious figure, but a rescued miniature Hereford cow. One evening Buddha wrapped her neck around an exhausted and upset Ellie and transferred a singular form of healing and comfort with an incredible impact. Understanding that this was something to be shared with others, Ellie developed Cow Hug Therapy, a groundbreaking approach to emotional healing that has proved effective for trauma, illness, disabilities, addiction, grief, and stress. This colorful and compelling narrative introduces the healing mavens of the barnyard, each with a unique story of being rescued from trauma and treated with love and respect. In their new role at Ellie's Gentle Barn sanctuaries, these animals have transformed lives and ignited breakthroughs and newfound purpose for visitors including a young mother who lost her baby, a suicidal teenager, a wounded serviceman, an open-heart-surgery patient, and many more. A testament to empathy and the mission to heal animals, people, and the planet, Cow Hug Therapy serves as a beacon of hope for all seeking healing and connection. Learn more about your ad choices. Cow Hug Therapy: How the Animals at the Gentle Barn Taught Me About Life, Death, and Everything in Between with Ellie Laks Ellie is the Founder of The Gentle Barn. She is responsible for the daily care of the animals and programs at The Gentle Barn and has been since The Gentle Barn's inception in 1999. Ellie is the face of The Gentle Barn and manages daily posts on Facebook, twitter and the Blog. Ellie is also the Educational Outreach Director working with hundreds of inner-city, at-risk and special needs children each year and has directly rescued, cared for and supported thousands of animals that would otherwise have been killed. Ellie has dedicated her life to being the voice of the voiceless. Ellie began her career working with special needs children and spaying and neutering and releasing feral cats in the alleys of Los Angeles. She started a dog training, walking, boarding and grooming business, that she used as a means to rescue animals from being put down at the animal shelters in Los Angeles. Ellie rescued and worked with about 500 dogs and cats before founding The Gentle Barn. Ellie is also a professional animal trainer and specializes in working with severely abused and mistrusting dogs. The Gentle Barn is now home to nearly 200 animals in Santa Clarita, California, Nashville, Tennessee, and St. Louis, Missouri, who Ellie has healed, along with staff members, volunteers and her husband Jay Weiner who runs The Gentle Barn with her. Once healed and happy, the animals help Ellie and Jay heal at-risk, inner-city and special needs children, who have the same stories as the animals. Ellie and Jay live on the property together, with their 3 children. Together they get to rescue and rehabilitate hundreds of animals each year and get to see miracles connecting animals and children every day. Ellie attended California State University, Northridge, specializing in childhood development. “There is nothing more fulfilling to me than looking into the eyes of animals and children, who have no chance, telling them with certainty that they will be ok and then watching them go through the healing and growing process and coming out the other side and watching them become ambassadors helping others who are in their old shoes. It is what I live for each and every day.” https://www.gentlebarn.org/ In Cow Hug Therapy, Ellie Laks recounts the extraordinary journey that started with her first teacher, Buddha — not the religious figure, but a rescued miniature Hereford cow. Founder Ellie Laks started The Gentle Barn after adopting a sick goat from a run-down petting zoo in 1999. Some two hundred animals later (including chickens, horses, pigs, cows, rabbits, emus, and more), The Gentle Barn has become an extraordinary nonprofit that brings together a volunteer staff of community members and at-risk teens to rehabilitate abandoned and/or abused animals. As Ellie teaches the volunteers to care for the animals, they learn a new language of healing that works wonders on the humans as well. In a recent episode of the Wild For Change podcast, I had a conversation with Ellie Laks, the founder of the Gentle Barn, about her new book, "Cow Hug Therapy." The book is a touching account of how the animals at the Gentle Barn have taught her valuable lessons about life and death and everything in between. I have always found solace in the company of animals. Being around them brings me a deep sense of peace and a feeling of unconditional love. I also believe that animals possess great wisdom and insight that they can share with us. Reading Ellie's book "Cow Hug Therapy" is a wonderful way to deepen our connection with animals. It can expand our awareness of the remarkable capabilities of animals, revealing them as sharp observers of life, guiding figures, and fur-clad angels who can impart valuable wisdom on how to live and love, if only we take the time to quietly listen and open our hearts. Ellie's stories about the lessons she's learned from her rescued animals go beyond the surface. These creatures bring profound soul lessons and messages that are meant to help us grow, evolve, and shine. Regrettably, the podcast ends abruptly. We recorded it in person, and unfortunately, the recording stopped about 10 minutes before our interview concluded. You can find Ellie's new book “Cow Hug Therapy” on the Gentle Barn's website, as well as on Amazon and Target. In this episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast, we talk with Ellie Laks about lessons you can learn from a cow (and chicken) and Cow Hug Therapy. It was amazing to hear that cows partake in many self-care rituals. We found it so interesting to hear about the connection she had with animals from a young age. That led us into exploring the intuition children have and how that changes into adulthood. We explored the state of the world's ecosystem and what we can do to make this world healthier for future generations. Do animals have a sense of humor? They most certainly do say animal communicators. In this episode, you'll meet Portia, a playful turkey who played a joke on her human caretakers. Portia had been rescued from slaughter at just 12 weeks old by the Gentle Barn Animal, an animal sanctuary with 3 locations across the U.S. Like most genetically engineered turkeys made to fatten up quickly for slaughter, by the time Portia was two she was so big she couldn't stand and was struggling under her massive weight. Ellie Laks, the founder of the Gentle Barn, who also happens to be an animal communicator, asked Portia if she wanted to be released from her pain. Much to Laks' surprise, Portia said she wanted to live, but not just live like a regular turkey, live like royalty. Was she serious? Or was she joking? And what did her caretakers learn from this fowl play? That's in this episode of Rover Says. Thanks so much to the Gentle Barn, Ellie Laks, and Portia! An orphaned and abused calf gets to live a full life thanks to the gift of animal communication and the compassionate sanctuary that took her in. Holy Cow was born into the dairy industry. Taken from her mother when she was tiny, she was destined for the dinner plate as veal. Instead, she wound up at the animal sanctuary The Gentle Barn. Two veterinarians said the injuries she'd sustained in the slaughter pipeline were so severe she needed to be euthanized. But the Gentle Barn's founder Ellie Laks, who is an animal communicator, just knew Holy Cow wanted to live. And so she gave her that chance with some out-of-the-box thinking and a huge amount of love and care. Holy Cow, who was named by comedian Ellen DeGeneres, went on to live a remarkable life. In her final days, animal communication once again changed the trajectory of Holy Cow's life, giving her extra time, to say her goodbyes and die on her own terms. Thanks so much to the Gentle Barn, Ellie Laks, Julie Walker and Holy Cow for sharing this beautiful story! My Gentle Barn: Creating a Sanctuary Where Animals Heal and Children Learn to Hope with Ellie Laks Ellie Laks is the Founder of The Gentle Barn. It is what I live for each and every day.” https://www.gentlebarn.org/ “My Gentle Barn is a wonderful book. You'll love Ellie Laks and the animals she rescued–and who rescued her back.” –Sy Montgomery, The Good Good Pig Founder Ellie Laks started The Gentle Barn after adopting a sick goat from a run-down petting zoo in 1999. My Gentle Barn weaves together the story of how the Barn came to be what it is today with Ellie's own journey. Filled with heartwarming animal stories and inspiring recoveries, My Gentle Barn is a feel-good account that will delight animal lovers and memoir readers alike. Ellie is an animal communicator and healing expert who consults with people, animal rescues, and sanctuaries all over the world on how to save, heal, and treat their own animals. Ellie is a powerful speaker and the author of “My Gentle Barn: Creating a sanctuary where animals heal, and children learn to hope.” Ellie has appeared on some of the most influential media outlets including The Ellen Show, People Magazine, Life Magazine, Animal Planet, The Huffington Post, Turning point, Women's World, NBC, CBS, ABC, PBS, The NY Times, and many more. Ellie has been saving, rehabilitating and communicating with animals since she was a child. From the age of seven Ellie heard the distress calls of baby birds, injured wildlife, and orphaned animals and would bring them home to heal them. By age 11 Ellie was working with families in her community to solve behavioral and training issues for their dogs. As a young adult, Ellie founded "Rover Rescue" where she focused on taking dogs and cats from high kill shelters deemed unadoptable. By communicating and connecting with the animals, Ellie was able to resolve their issues and place them into forever homes. During her time with Rover Rescue Ellie saved over 500 dogs and cats. Later Ellie discovered a petting zoo and was overwhelmed by the animals desperate pleas for help. Not able to walk away, Ellie ended up bringing those broken farm animals home to her half acre backyard. She listened as they recounted their tails of abuse and neglect and gave them everything they needed to heal. This made Ellie want to do more. Ellie founded The Gentle Barn in 1999, a nonprofit organization that rescues and rehabilitates not only dogs and cats, but horses, cows, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, turkeys, peacocks, emus, llamas, and donkeys. Ellie formulated her own "Gentle Healing" method, using a combination of animal communication, energy healing, holistic healing, holding therapy, and western medicine to heal animals no one else would take and had nowhere else to go. Ellie specializes in healing puppies with Parvo, calves from veal crates, and orphaned animals of all kinds. Ellie and her husband Jay Weiner have brought The Gentle Barn national and now have three Gentle Barn locations, in California, in Missouri and in Tennessee. The Gentle Barn is one of the largest and most beloved farm animal sanctuaries in the world. It is their goal to be the voice for animals, share their stories, and open the hearts of humanity towards all living beings. Ellie Laks, since she was a young girl, had vision of a life surrounded by animals, bringing her vision to reality, she works each day to create a gentler world by rescuing animals, giving them rehabilitation and sanctuary, and then welcoming anyone who is looking for hope, and by doing so the Gentle Barn is opening people's hearts to the intelligence, affection, and magic of animals. This episode is one that shows what a vision and resolve to make that vision into reality can truly accomplish. www.furrealpodcast.com www.gentlebarn.org www.ellieaks.com www.prepvet.com @thegentlebarn @thefurrealpodcast @ellielaks Speical thanks to J Jig Cicero @jjigcicero for our music intro and outro..you rock!!! “The truth is that in between all of those wonderful events was huge debt, maxing out 20 different credit cards and absolutely annihilating my credit, moving from that little half acre backyard into where we are now in Santa Clarita, refinancing the house five times, having people show up in the middle of the night to repo our cars, the bank trying to take the house, my parents doing literal intervention, saying, ‘Ellie, stop your nonsense.'” – Ellie Laks Ellie Laks is the founder of The Gentle Barn, a sanctuary that houses and heals some of the most traumatized animals around. And in turn, those animals heal the humans who come there. It's a pretty remarkable place. It started out on half an acre in Ellie's backyard, and it grew to many many acres and multiple locations. There's one in California, one in Tennessee and a third in Missouri. Since its inception, The Gentle Barn has saved thousands of animals and been host to over 500,000 people.
