To conclude our August Archive Season, this week we're joined by the legend that is Dr Jean Dodds talking about vaccines. As one of the pioneers to research the duration of immunity (DOI) of modern vaccines, Dr Jean has led the way for the WSAVA (The World Small Animal Veterinary Association) to recommend Titre Testing over annual boosters. Having studied how the DOI of initial puppy shots can last a minimum of three years, if not a life time, Dr Jean believes in #TestBeforeYouTreat and that's for annual vaccines as well as wormers. A Titre tests picks up the serological immunity that your dog has developed against the core diseases: Parvo, Distemper and Hepatitis, and helps pet guardians manage their dog's immunisation rather than over vaccinate.  For over five decades Dr Jean has noted the side effects of many vaccines, not least from the ingredients or adjuvants that are added including Mercury. We chat about the difference between active vaccines and non-active vaccines, and the possible side effects from the latter, and what you can do to minimise the risks. We chat about the best time to vaccinate your puppy, and we also discuss Hemopet the blood bank Dr Jean founded in 1986 where bloods for Thyroid assessments are sent globally. In 2015 Dr Jean published the best selling book Canine Nutrigenomics - foods to heal your dog naturally. We also talk about environmental stressors and the food chain too! Canine Influenza Outbreak and How to Manage It with Dr. Marty Greer Dr. Marty Greer, DVM joins host Laura Reeves to discuss the current Canine Influenza outbreak, how to manage it and how it became an overnight sensation in the public. “Well, partially it's media, partially it's misinformation, courtesy of the media,” Greer said. “And partially there was a lack of vaccine. The vaccine insufficient supply appears to have been corrected or is being corrected. “So, things are better. In 2004 when this first happened, we didn't have any vaccine and no dogs in any part of the world that we know had immunity to this. So Ron Schultz, the vaccine guru from University of Wisconsin, made a recommendation that all dogs should be vaccinated against this, that it should be considered a core vaccine because no dogs had natural immunity. “It was like when Parvo happened in the late 70s and early 80s came out of nowhere, there was no immunity and bada bing bada boom we've got dogs that are desperately sick and dying. “Influenza is a respiratory disease and it is classified in the CIRD, the canine infectious respiratory disease complex. So a lot of times that's either called CIRD or it's called kennel cough. There's a whole bucket of stuff that falls in the kennel cough bucket and it's not necessarily a diagnosis. It's a description. It's a collection of disorders, diseases, but it's not necessarily a diagnosis. “So we have had outbreaks of canine influenza (before). The first known outbreak was in 2004 in a colony of Greyhounds, I believe in Florida, and they think it was a mutation from the equine version of influenza. “And that was H3N8. There's now also an H3N2 that we have identified and can vaccinate against. “Like all respiratory diseases, it causes a cough, but in this particular case, influenza can cause disease severe enough to cause hemorrhagic pneumonia and the death of patients. And there have been patients that have died in this last outbreak that occurred this fall (at the Golden Retriever national in Albany, Oregon). “It had to get to the Golden Retriever National somehow. It's not like the Golden Retriever group invented it, just drummed up a new virus, but it appears that it reared its ugly head there. There were a number of dogs that were there that then went back to all over the U.S. “So, they were East Coast, Midwest, everywhere. And these dogs were coming back with respiratory disease and it was easy to just say, ‘Uh, it's kennel cough, here's some medication, you'll be fine.' But one of my associates was involved with some of the Golden Retrievers that were at that show and I was in surgery the day she walked in and said, ‘You know, we've got these dogs that are coming back from the Golden National with a pretty bad cough.' And I don't know why but the hair kind of stood up on the back of my neck and I said, ‘We need to get these dogs tested for what kind of virus or bacteria we have.' “There was just something about, I don't know if it was her tone of voice or the number of dogs that were involved. There's something about that conversation that just said to me, 'We have problems.' “So, we swabbed the most recently started to cough dogs. We didn't want a dog that had already been coughing for a week by the time we did the sample collection and submitted that to our local diagnostic lab at the same time that a number of other people were submitting samples. “We weren't the only ones by any stretch of the imagination that felt we need a diagnosis on this. So, at our diagnostic lab in Wisconsin, they came back with influenza A. At some of the other diagnostic labs, they came back with influenza H3N2, I believe. Not that it makes that much of a difference if it's H3N2 or H3N8. It's influenza anyway. So, there were multiple labs with multiple dogs that had all been at the same event. “They were coming up with the same answer. And so, when I walked up to my front desk last...

From the age of seven Ellie heard the distress calls of baby birds, injured wildlife, and orphaned animals and would bring them home to heal them.  By age 11 Ellie was working with families in her community to solve behavioral and training issues for their dogs. As a young adult, Ellie founded "Rover Rescue" where she focused on taking dogs and cats from high kill shelters deemed unadoptable. By communicating and connecting with the animals, Ellie was able to resolve their issues and place them into forever homes. During her time with Rover Rescue Ellie saved over 500 dogs and cats. Later Ellie discovered a petting zoo and was overwhelmed by the animals desperate pleas for help. Not able to walk away, Ellie ended up bringing those broken farm animals home to her half acre backyard. She listened as they recounted their tails of abuse and neglect and gave them everything they needed to heal. This made Ellie want to do more. Ellie founded The Gentle Barn in 1999, a nonprofit organization that rescues and rehabilitates not only dogs and cats, but horses, cows, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, turkeys, peacocks, emus, llamas, and donkeys. Ellie formulated her own "Gentle Healing" method, using a combination of animal communication, energy healing, holistic healing, holding therapy, and western medicine to heal animals no one else would take and had nowhere else to go. Ellie specializes in healing puppies with Parvo, calves from veal crates, and orphaned animals of all kinds.  Ellie and her husband Jay Weiner have brought The Gentle Barn national and now have three Gentle Barn locations, in California, in Missouri and in Tennessee. The Gentle Barn is one of the largest and most beloved farm animal sanctuaries in the world. It is their goal to be the voice for animals, share their stories, and open the hearts of humanity towards all living beings. Program Description Canine parvovirus remains a constant and frustrating disease for many veterinary practitioners, particularly those working in or with animal shelters and other facilities housing many vulnerable animals with frequent turnover. In such facilities the threat of a single case of parvovirus turning into an outbreak is real and the consequences can be grave both in terms of animal morbidity and mortality as well as the impact on personnel and the community. As sheltering organizations seek to expand their ability to care for pets infected with canine parvovirus and maximize opportunities for positive outcomes, critical analysis of the available organizational resources, preventive care protocols, and spectrum of treatment options employed can assist in life-saving efforts.  Program Agenda Why is canine parvovirus a continuing threat to canine health and welfare? What resources help define an organizations ability to manage canine parvovirus cases? What is “isolation,” which cases should be “isolated,” and how/where can patients be isolated effectively in a variety of facilities? What are the most common mistakes animal care facilities make that may contribute to outbreaks of canine parvovirus? How effective are low-cost and outpatient treatment protocols for canine parvovirus? What are some novel, effective, and cost-effective treatment options for canine parvovirus? Canine parvovirus monoclonal antibody Oral recuperation fluids Fecal transplantation Learning Objectives 1. List the resources required to successfully manage canine parvovirus cases in shelter environments 2. Evaluate preventive care and biosecurity practices and identify gaps that increase the risk of disease transmission in the shelter 3. Compare the benefits of different treatment options and their impact on the course of disease and shelter animal flow

Today, you'll hear from Dr. Kelly Diehl, the Senior Director of Science and Communications at Morris Animal Foundation. During our conversation, we explore the role of the foundation in funding important animal health research. Kelly shares some intriguing case studies that have come from the research they've funded including work on the Parvo virus, which is close to my heart. We also discuss the impact of Morris Animal Foundation's work beyond pets, touching on species-specific studies like the one on yellow-eyed penguins in New Zealand. Another exciting initiative of the foundation is Data Commons. It's a hub of animal health data that is free and available to researchers working on pet cancer studies and other topics. Something else we discussed that applies to all of us in the pet industry is collaboration. In the foundation's work, Kelly highlights just how important it is to collaborate with others in the animal world. This was such a jam-packed conversation that we also touched on the foundation's "Stop Cancer Fur-ever" campaign. Listen to learn about some of the potential risk factors for cancer in dogs. I think you're going to enjoy this deep dive into the world of animal health research! And just like Kelly explains, collaboration is key if we want to make a positive impact in the pet world. EPISODE 181: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Just like American democracy I too am available for sale for $787,500,000. Since the SCOTUS Citizens United decision in 2010, it's been the corporations' world and we just live in it, unless they kill us. And corporations gonna corpo-RATE. Five years ago a company bought three-quarters of Dominion for 38 million. It just got a return of 1567%. "Money is accountability," said its lawyers. True - if YOU got the money. If you aren't, what you got was Tucker Carlson last night predicting a race war with impunity.  Spare me the nonsense about Fox knowing it did wrong. Dominion didn't even get a retraction, let alone an apology. "We acknowledge the court's rulings finding certain claims about Dominion to be false." That's the 21st Century equivalent of "The White Star Line acknowledges that RMS Titanic missed its estimated time of arrival at Pier 54 in New York." (10:15) IN CASE THAT ISN'T BAD ENOUGH: The Democrats are using the incapacitation of Dianne Feinstein as the excuse for not subpoenaing Clarence Thomas. Because the Democrats are adhering to the rules of Flag Football while the Republicans are all armed and if they needed a vote to subpoena Sonia Sotomayor they would push THEIR Dianne Feinstein down a flight of stairs to get it. B-Block (17:04) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: McConnell makes a fascist funny; Greene insists Chump never said anything racist about Covid, then repeats all the racist things he said. A guy tries to destroy all the Anheuser-Busch beer in a Wal-mart. And Chump's new NFTs have pissed off...Tomi Lahren and Baked Alaska? (21:23) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: An elected Florida state official says Bud Light should be trying to kiss Kid Rock's ass. Jim Jordan tried to paint Manhattan as a crime hellscape by trotting out a woman whose boyfriend was murdered...in New Jersey. And Kara Swisher has the utter gall to ask Jen Psaki why there haven't been more Republicans on her MSNBC show. "What's the problem? Four shows and no Republicans." This is one of the questions that has led American media, politics, and society, into the sinkhole it's in. C-Block (32:00) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Four puppies in the Bahamas trying to survive Parvo (33:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: It's not just Fox. Cable News corrupts completely. In fact, NEWS News corrupts completely. Let me tell you stories of what it did to Radio's Paul Harvey, and Rachel Maddow.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
