On this edition of Parallax Views, Prof. Emil Draitser returns to discuss his latest book Laughing All the Way to Freedom: The Americanization of a Russian Emigre. Growing up in a Jewish family in Soviet Union-era Odessa, Emil came to the United States in the 1970s and began a new life in America. His previous books Shush! Growing Up Jewish Under Stalin: A Memoir, Farewell, Mama Odessa: A Novel, and In the Jaws of the Crocodile: A Soviet Memoir are a trilogy that chronicles his experiences in both the Soviet Union and the U.S. Laughing All the Way to Freedom continues that exploration of Emil's experiences, specifically as an emigre. What does it mean to be an emigre from another land with a different culture? And when does one truly become American, in a cultural sense, once they've settled in the U.S.? In this conversation we discuss issues that face emigres like culture shock, Russian humor and Emil's appearance on the Merv Griffin show discussing the subject of Russian humor, working as a satirical writer in Russia, the power of humor to soften barriers between people, the Russian bombing of Odessa and Emil's feelings of PTSD over the Russo-Ukrainian war, what does Americanization mean and what is the road to Americanization, mass emigration from the Soviet Union and the parallels with the biblical story of Exodus, how Americans born of Russian descent view America and the differences between their understanding of America and their parents' understanding of America, America's core values as understood by a Russian emigre, the concept of freedom and law in relation to both America and Russia, and much, much more.

In addition to the two charged, community members across Florida have been the target of FBI harassment that has included showing up at people's places of employment, approaching family members, and even executing a “No Knock Warrant,” with armed agents raiding the home of a family with children in the home. The FACE Act has been used to prosecute individuals who murdered abortion providers, physically threatened or attacked those seeking reproductive healthcare, barricaded abortion clinic entrances, and other anti-choice actions that have served to limit lawful access to abortion and other reproductive health care. Prosecuting two community activists for alleged graffiti is a shameful and disgusting use of the law. In response, community members have formed the South Florida Anti-Repression Committee (SFLARC) and are launching a solidarity campaign and defense fundraiser. The funds raised will go to support those facing state repression, both those charged and those who experience harassment by law enforcement. A person with dual citizenship is a citizen of two countries at the same time, which has both advantages and disadvantages because it is a complex legal status. Dual citizens enjoy certain benefits, such as the ability to live and work freely in two countries, own property in both countries, and travel between the countries with relative ease. Being a citizen of two countries allows you more mobility - embracing our global world and all its opportunities. In this episode of The New Nomad, Samantha North (owner of Digital Émigré) joins our hosts Andrew Jernigan and Allen Koski as they take their audience to the complicated world of passports and visas and everything in between. They regaled their audience with stories about their experiences and shared tips on how to make the legalities of travel easier, especially after Brexit. If you are planning to go to a foreign country and maybe stay there for an extended period, tune in to this week's episode. Surely, the golden nuggets peppered throughout the show would be a huge help.[2:57] Brexit's effect on the travel community[6:39] The advantages and disadvantages of having dual citizenship[17:20] Why it's important to have insurance when you travel abroad[19:37] Learning a new language[25:19] How to not get ripped off when you shop in a foreign country[29:03] Having wise counsel is crucialSamantha North, originally from the UK, has lived and worked abroad for over 10 years. In 2013 she started her freelancing career while working for a remote destination company. Even though she started out as a journalist, she decided then to focus more on web development. Both the pandemic and recent political changes (Brexit) in her passport country (UK), inspired her to launch a service, Digital Émigré, to help remote workers and freelancers emigrate to the EU and gain citizenship. Her past freelance experiences in web development, digital marketing, and journalism have been invaluable in this new venture.Samantha North Links:Website: https://digitalemigre.com/LinkedIn: https://uk.linkedin.com/in/northsamanthaTwitter: https://twitter.com/sjnrth?lang=enFollow Insured Nomads at:Instagram: @insurednomadswww.insurednomads.com

Francisca Monteiro is a typographer and book designer based in the United Kingdom. While I was working on my MFA thesis on design criticism in Baltimore, Francisca was also working on a thesis, at the University of Reading, on Emigre and the relationship between design and writing. I was struck by the similarities in our projects which we use to frame a discussion about the history of design criticism, the role of magazines in creating a discourse, and how the design writing has changed over the years. Dmitri Siegel is a creative director, designer, and writer. He's currently the Vice President of Global Brand for Sonos and was previously Executive Creative Director at Patagonia. He also was one of my favorite writers of the Emigre-era, where his writing appeared in Emigre, Design Observer, and Dot Dot Dot. In this episode, Dmitri and I talk about his interest in writing about design, going from writing for Emigre to leading design at Sonos, and how design criticism has changed over the course of his career. Anne Burdick is a graphic designer, writer, researcher, and educator. She's the chair of the Art Center College of Design's Media Design Program and has written for publications like Emigre and Eye. In this episode, Anne and I talk about her own background and journey through design — which we discovered had many parallels to my own design career. We also talk about new modes of practice, the relationships between writing and designing, and asking the big questions of design's role in society and culture. Cave Canem award winning poet Natalie J Graham talks with hosts Eric Newman and Medaya Ocher about her collection Begin with a Failed Body. The discussion opens about failure, imperfect bodies, and fallible memories; detours through hip-hop and black culinary traditions; and weaves through history to hope and pleasure. Also, LARB's Boris Dralyuk drops to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the October Revolution by recommending a collection of stories written in the wake of 1917: Russian Emigre Short Stories from Bunin to Yanovsky, edited by Bryan Karetnyk.
Mr. Jeffery Keedy is a designer, writer, and educator. He studied at Cranbrook and since 1985, has been on faculty at CalArts. Originally trained as a designer, Mr. Keedy started writing early in his career and became a frequent contributor for Emigre and his writing has appeared in publications like Eye, I.D., and the AIGA Journal. When I discovered Emigre, Mr. Keedy's writings were always some of my favorite so this was a special conversation for me. In this episode, we talk about his early design education and how he started writing, how the design discourse has changed and fragmented, and why graphic design as we define it, might just be a 20th century invention that doesn't really exist anymore. Edward Fella (1938) is an artist, graphic designer and educator whose work has had an important influence on contemporary typography. He practiced professionally as a commercial artist in Detroit for 30 years before receiving an MFA in Design from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1987. He has since devoted his time to teaching and his own unique self-published work. Since Ed already knew about our signature first question we’re curious about the answer he prepared for it. We also hear more about his family background, upbringing and education. Ed tells us how he started working at a commercial art studio at 18 years old. In 1985, after been in advertising for 30 years, Ed went to Cranbrook to get a master’s degree. We wonder if he thinks his work, if he would have taken the step earlier, would have developed in the same way? Recorded at the Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, California.
