Nineties Babies Nostalgia

To kick off the holiday content we decided to do something a little silly goofy, a little hehe haha, and a lot lololol. And so we each compiled a list of some of the most competent holiday movie characters we could think of (Yukon Cornelius, Buddy the Elf, Fievel, etc.) and put them in random pairings in which they must compete in some very whacky scenarios (who would be a better dog sitter, or wingman, or would win in a fight with noodle arms). We hope you enjoy this silliest of episodes. Please rate & review and reach out to us on socials with any thoughts you have to share. OUR SOCIALSInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/ninetiesbabiesnostalgia/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgmyQV7STEmjISJKCZr362w Twitter: https://twitter.com/Nineties_Babies TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@90sbabiesnostalgia Theme Song by Patrick Dunnevant, (https://www.youtube.com/c/AcappellaVGM)Artwork by Dawn Wheeler (https://www.instagram.com/wool_and_stone)Send us a text

In the next episode, the boys will cover Peter when he fully committed to making stabby stabby time into a full time job instead of a part time hobby. Hope you enjoy!!! The RSA begins their first movie series of Season 3! They'll only be doing 5 of the 13 movies! The RSA gang begins the first of Land Before Time movies! a 1988 animated adventure drama film directed and produced by Don Bluth from a screenplay by Stu Krieger and a story by Judy Freudberg and Tony Geiss, and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Kathleen Kennedy, and Frank Marshall. The film stars the voices of Gabriel Damon, Candace Hutson, Judith Barsi and Will Ryan with narration provided by Pat Hingle. It is the first film in The Land Before Time franchise. Produced by Amblin Entertainment and Sullivan Bluth Studios, it features dinosaurs living in prehistoric times. The plot features a young brown Apatosaurus named Littlefoot, who ends up alone after his mother is attacked by a villainous Tyrannosaurus rex and dies. Littlefoot flees famine and upheaval to search for the Great Valley, an area spared from devastation, where the adult dinosaurs have moved on to. On his journey, he meets four young companions: Cera, an orange Triceratops, Ducky, a green Saurolophus, Petrie, a brown Pteranodon, and Spike, a green Stegosaurus.[4] The film explores issues of prejudice between the different species and the hardships they endure in their journey as they are guided by the spirit of Littlefoot's mother and forced to deal with a "sharptooth" (Tyrannosaurus rex). The Land Before Time is the only Don Bluth film of the 1980s in which Dom DeLuise did not participate (instead, he starred in Disney's Oliver & Company released that same day), and the only film in The Land Before Time series that is not a musical, as well as the only one to be released theatrically worldwide. It was also the last film that Bluth directed that was distributed by Universal Pictures. The film was released by Universal on November 18, 1988, to generally positive reviews from critics and was a box office success, grossing $84.4 million. Its success, along with An American Tail and the 1988 live-action/animated film Who Framed Roger Rabbit led Spielberg to found his animation studio, Amblimation. The first film spawned a franchise with thirteen direct-to-video sequels, a television series, video games and merchandise, none of which had Bluth, Spielberg nor Lucas' involvement (though Amblin Entertainment was involved in the television series like it was for Fievel's American Tails). It is currently Don Bluth's third highest-grossing animated film, only behind Anastasia (1997) and An American Tail (1986).

As explained in this episode's introduction, it's a bit of a different one. This entire interview proceeds in English, mainly for two reasons: I wanted this conversation to reach as many people as possible, particularly within the very diverse jiu-jitsu community. Fievel and I also found it more natural to speak to eachother in English. My guest today was Andre Fievel, who, among many other things, is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and co-founder of Frontline Academy Bergen. Fievel was kind enough to make time to have a conversation with me about the art of jiu-jitsu, life in Brazil, his relentlessly optimistic view on life, his personal battles and much more. I greatly enjoyed this conversation with an extremely interesting and humble guy, and I hope you do aswell! Hey Full House Fans, Angela Bowen here, the host of Oh Mylanta Holy Chalupas: An Unofficial Full House Fuller House Podcast. Today, I'm kicking off the Best Friends Series with Full House S2E15: Pal Joey, which aired on February 17,1989. In this episode Joey and Danny recall the day they first met. I loved this episode, it was so cute. Especially seeing how Danny and Joey met, the kids they got to play them are absolutely adorable. The young man who played Danny, Phillip Glasser, I got the chance to meet him last Summer. He was so cool. He also voiced Fievel from An American Tail as well as the sequel and the short lived television series in the early 90's. Danny gets jealous of all the time that Joey and Jesse are spending together since they've become partners in advertising and Danny feels he's being edged out of Joey's life as his best friend. Danny was being so immature and Joey calls him on it and Danny decides since Joey can't read his mind and understand the reason he's upset than Joey and he never should have been friends to begin with. Good grief, Danny! Total Throwback Episode! So much unnecessary drama! Speaking of unnecessary drama, the side plot with Stephanie, Harry and DJ. Weird Love Triangle (at least from Steph's POV). DJ teaches Harry how to subtract and all of a sudden he's in love with her. Poor Steph is heartbroken. It's another switching rooms for an episode scenario. How it goes unnoticed with three adults in the house, only the writers can answer that question. It's up to Jesse and DJ to bring Steph and Harry back together. Join me next week when I cover the next episode in the series, Full House S3E9: Dr. Dare Rides Again, which aired on November 24, 1989. In this episode Comet, the family's new dog, eats Michelle's ice cream. Pete is an old pal that Jesse once knew. He visits the family when Danny and Becky are away on a talk show styling trip. 'Feedback' and some of Jesse's old ways pop up. Have a great week everyone!

Note: The episode originally aired April 19, 2017. Your Stupid Minds delves into well-trodden bad movie territory with the notoriously terrible animated Italian film Titanic: The Legend Goes On. We may not have the annoying falsetto screech of The Nostalgia Critic, or the deep-seated racism of JonTron, but we do have notable animal lover and Chris's sister Sarah Dobson back on the podcast. Angelica (Lisa Russo) is a lowly beautiful servant who looks strikingly like Anastasia. She meets the rich and handsome William (Mark Thompson-Ashworth) who gropes her laundry and they fall in love. meanwhile, a menagerie of obnoxious talking animals, including a rapping dog, a noble French mouse who looks like Fievel, and a trio of horrible Mexican mice stereotypes, sing tonally inappropriate songs about partying and dancing. Then the boat sinks and almost no one dies, thus tarnishing the legacy of the 1,500 actual people who perished in this real life tragedy.

Q&A: Playwright Itamar Moses discusses his adaptation of 'An American Tail'

Minnesota Now

In April, the Children's Theater Company in Minneapolis premiered an adaptation of a beloved children's film of the 1980s.   “An American Tail” tells the story of Fievel Mousekewitz, a Jewish mouse who faces religious persecution in Russia. Fievel comes to America, where he and his family have been promised there are “no cats.”   It's a story of immigration and community organizing. Tony Award-winner Itamar Moses wrote the new script and lyrics for the show and spoke with MPR News Arts Reporter Jacob Aloi.  This conversation has been edited for length and clarity.   Your work includes plays like ‘Outrage' and TV shows like ‘Boardwalk Empire.' It often has a lot of humor in it. But it also features heavy themes geared towards an adult audience. I'm curious if the approach has been different writing something with families in mind. Yes and no. On the deepest level, you're always just trying to write something that feels truthful. And sort-of soundly constructed, and where the story works, and the thing moves [for] young audiences. And adult audiences both appreciate that.   The other thing is that I'm adapting a film that already has all of these sorts of [young adult] elements built in, you know, it's a fable about anthropomorphized animals, right, it has like a fairytale quality.  That the bar is, if anything, slightly higher, in terms of attention span and things you can hook into, in a way that is accessible. Not dumbing it down because, actually, kids are super smart. They're smarter than we give them credit for. And they like being told the truth, because they're being lied to all the time in their lives by adults. But there's something — it makes you want to lean into the magic and the metaphor a little bit more, I think, than with adults.  The piece that people most know you for is your work on ‘The Band's Visit,' which itself was an adaptation of a film. I'm curious about what goes into adapting a work from a film to a different medium versus an original work.  [In] both “The Band's Visit” and “American Tail,” the first thing I did was sit down with the movie open on my laptop screen, playing it scene-by-scene with a text document open next to it.   And then, just as I went through it, asking myself, okay, what within this piece, will hold just as well translated directly to the stage with no changes, and then you start sort of building it that way. You end up with a bunch of stuff that you can just take directly from the source material. And then there are gaps.   Even though “American Tail” has some songs, it only has three or four. So even if we kept them all, and I think we kept three of the four, you needed to write new ones to fill out a score. “Band's Visit” didn't have songs except [for] the diegetic music that the band performs. So in both cases, then you have this text that you're building the songs up on top of like, this is the foundation? And can we drill down into this moment? Can we cannibalize this moment for it for a song all by myself?  You've talked about how being Jewish has influenced some of your work more explicitly. And I'm curious what it's like working on this show that explores that a little more.  It's funny because it's true that for the first 15 years of my career, I almost never wrote characters who are explicitly Jewish where it seemed relevant to the story. I think I had this instinctive aversion to being pigeonholed as this or that kind of writer. I was like, “Oh, no, my play is universal.”  And then I think, gradually, the longer you do this, you realize more and more that the more hyper-specific something is, there's this paradoxical way in which it feels it feels more universal, first of all, and secondly, that you're actually preventing yourself from going to the deepest places you possibly can, by not mining what's most deeply yours.  “The Band's Visit” was a real turning point for me ... it was close to the first time that something I'd written anything, for instance, set in Israel, that was the first time I'd ever done that. All of my work since then has leaned in one way or another, I think a little bit more strongly into that, sometimes very subtly.  And then sometimes, you know, it just depends [on] what's called for by the piece. Like, not everything is about that. And then it's also made me think more deeply about the specific identity of each character. And sometimes you want that —not to necessarily be part of the script, like, oh, actually, we could cast this in 50 different ways. And it's super interesting to do that. But I think the responsible thing to do is make a choice about which you're doing and why.   Now I feel extra motivated to do that. Because I've been made aware of my Jewishness in sort of a negative way in this country. I haven't felt that overt sort of feeling of antisemitism is anything other than like this fringe thing that existed but didn't impact my life very much at all. That was how it felt for most of my life. And in the last five years, and then even more so in the last year or two, I've suddenly felt it in a new way. And so that's made me, I think, want to double down on that a little bit more,  How has that influenced working on a show like this about Jewish resilience?  It's really a story about immigration, about how America is made up of waves and waves of immigrants. And the choice every wave of immigrants has, once they've sort of established themselves and figured out some zone of safety.   If that indeed happens. Do you turn around and hold that territory? You know, do guard it jealously, and, or do you sort of pay it forward in a different way and try to be more welcoming to the waves that come after you.  So that feels like the core of what this story is … the fact that the Mousekewitzes have to flee Russia because of pogroms is the inciting incident ... but then it's about how that weaves with all of these equivalent stories and analogous in various ways stories that everybody has, or every mouse has.  But, in a subtle way, it has felt like a great outlet for some of the feelings that of having had been having about this stuff generally. To include things like Jewish prayers, like prayers in Hebrew, you know, that are sung because here we are doing this musical and, you know, we slip in. The opening scene as a Hanukkah party, right? So, getting to do that stuff on stage, and put some of that stuff sort of explicitly out there, has felt like a subtle form of defiance.

Fievel Is Glauque - "My Rebel" from the 2022 album Flaming Swords on MATH Interactive. Taking their name from a diss on a 1986 cartoon character, Belgium-based vocalist Ma Clément and NY producer/musician Zach Phillips comprise the duo that is Fievel Is Glauque. ("Fievel" is a mouse who stars in the animated An American Tail film series; the internet says "glauque" translates from French to "sinister, ominous, worrying.")  The jazzy-pop of their 2021 debut cassette God's Trashmen Sent To Right The Mess landed them an opening slot on Stereolab's recent North American tour, but their first proper LP — Flaming Swords, released back in November — adds a sheen to their prog-punk-jazz sound. The album was recorded live, in its entirety, during an evening in Brussels, August 2021.  “Musically, Ma directed melodic impetus and I directed harmonic and rhythmic framing,” Phillips said in a press release. “Lyrically, we fought and embraced our initial impulses alternatingly; above all, we tried to trust and document the psychodynamics of the process itself rather than attempting to express concrete, prefab emotional or intellectual messaging. This approach to writing is intended to promote poetry while avoiding alibis and the hall-of-mirrors reproduction of excessive self-identification.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There are no cats in America! Except for like a dozen who can be easily pushed off a pier. But there are definitely no dogs! At least that's what we know from Don Bluth's An American Tail. Is this the biggest bummer of a kids' movie ever made? Does anyone remember any details about it beyond crying over Somewhere Out There? How in the world does Fievel survive so many near-death experiences? And can you freaking believe they got Christopher Plummer to play a French pigeon?? One thing we do know is that learned a lot of actual historical facts about 19th-century New York during this viewing.
