I do get a kick out of Senator JD Vance howling with indignation that folks on the left need to dial down the divisive rhetoric as if we're all unaware who his running mate is. As a matter of fact, before my day got away from me yesterday, I'd planned to splice together a batch of clips of one Donald John Trump and his many years of heated rancor. Fortunately, the Daily Show has a staff capable of doing that while I'm just a staff of one. There's plenty of coverage pre-January 6th that we could (and do) go back to ... or just last year with Manhattan D.A. Alvin Bragg having to hire private security (wonder why?) Quietly, and without much fanfare, the three Atlanta Solidarity Fund organizers who had money laundering charges up to their eyeballs were let off the hook by the Georgia Attorney General for all bout one charge. Meanwhile, protestors have a lot of balls - ping pong balls - to drop on city council for their inaction on the ballot measure more than 100,000 residents signed a petition for. Lastly, we now know The Fed lowered their prime rate by a whopping 0.5% - more than I and most experts expected - but good news for just about all of us not named Donald Trump.

Join Dean Spade & organizers from Atlanta as they discuss how to protect our communities against recent threats to mutual aid & solidarity efforts. This event took place on August 17, 2023. In the last year, we've seen attempts to criminalize mutual aid become more common as an authoritarian tactic. The recent attacks on mutual aid organizers of the Atlanta Solidarity Fund brought into full view how charging, surveillance, and targeted criminalization are an ongoing strategy to shut down political movements and community organizing. In this session, we'll be reviewing how media, right-wing movements, and even supposed allies have often latched onto incorrect and spurious claims about non-profit finances, community organizing structures, and basic accounting practices in attempts to stop the solidarity of mutual aid. Join organizer Dean Spade, author of Mutual Aid: Building Solidarity During This Crisis (and the next), along with Kamau Franklin of Community Movement Builders, Zohra Ahmed from the University of GA School of Law, plus organizers from the National Bail Fund Network and the Yellowhammer Fund, to discuss the threats organizers are facing and how we protect each other and social justice organizing. Sixty-one people were just indicted for their alleged involvement in the movement to Stop Cop City. These folks were slapped with RICO charges, which were designed to go after the mob. Some were charged for crimes as small as handing out fliers, serving as a legal observer during a protest, and organizing a bail fund.Our guest is abolitionist organizer Micah Herskind, who has been involved with and written extensively about the movement to Stop Cop City. You can read his Primer on Cop City in Scalawag here. Follow Micah Herskind on Twitter: @micahinATLAs we discuss, the RICO indictment seeks to criminalize and shut down the decentralized movement against the massive urban warfare training center for police known as Cop City. The indictment even lists “mutual aid” “solidarity” and “collectivism” as essential to what they are calling an “organized criminal enterprise” against Cop City. This is an outrageous abuse of power by the state which threatens to strip away our very right to protest.YOU CAN HELP THE FOLKS FACING THESE INSANE CHARGES by donating to the Atlanta Solidarity Fund. https://atlsolidarity.org/This episode was hosted by Dr. Erika Okamoto of the Cocktails & Capitalism podcast — a show that pairs crafted beverages with stories distilled from our capitalist hellscape. The City of Atlanta wants to spend $90 million in taxpayer dollars to tear down forest and build a police training center, where they will build a mock city for training for urban warfare, engage in explosions testing, have shooting ranges, and controlled building burns. This proposal is deeply unpopular among Atlanta residents, who want the money to be spent on several other areas where there are pressing needs, including education and healthcare. The major supporters of Cop City are major corporations - not the actual residents who will be targeted by the police trained at Cop City. The good news is community organizers have organized an opportunity to put Cop City to a public vote. By August 14th, they need to collect 70,000 signatures from registered voters in Atlanta to secure a referendum on the November 7th ballot on whether Cop City should be funded. For this discussion Kamau Franklin from Community Movement Builders, and Micah Herskind return to the podcast, and K from Unity and Struggle, and Matthew Johnson from the Stop Cop City Faith Coalition join them to talk about various facets of the movement to stop cop city current strategic and tactical questions and concerns. They each provide brief introductions during the show itself. We catch folks up on some of the important recent events in this struggle since our conversation on the movement last Fall. We discusss the repression of the Atlanta Solidarity Fund, the use of domestic terrorism charges, and against firm and nearly unanimous public opposition the Atlanta City Council's recent allocation of the funding for the building of Cop City.  We also get into the new referendum initiative and some of the tactical and strategic debates around that effort. Further all of our guests offer up multiple ways that people can get involved and plug into the struggle against cop city wherever they are. This week is a week of action in the struggle to Stop Cop City so we will include links with more information on ways people can get involved in that as well. UPDATES which occurred after the recording (which are relevant to some discussions within the episode): The referendum effort is now underway, the county clerk approved the ability of organizers to begin collecting signatures a couple of hours after we recorded this conversation. Dekalb County DA Sherry Boston has withdrawn her office from the prosecution of 42 cases against stop cop city activists due to movement pressure.  And we are almost at the end of the month, this is our 7th and final episode for the month of June. Cop City is a proposed training facility established to further militarize our police departments. Cop City in Atlanta has been met with protests as the corporations behind this compound seek to increase their influence and subsequently use public police departments as their public/private CAPOS or mafia-like enforcers against those pesky people who actually believe in democracy. A young activist named Manuel Paez Teran was shot 57 TIMES by Atlanta police during a non-violent protest. He was 26 years old at the time of his police murder. Protests continued and predictably arrests followed for what is protected 1st amenndment activities. A group called the Atlanta Solidarity Fund raises funds and arranges bail and attorneys for arrested protesters. Three of this group's organizers were arrested in a violent SWAT attack on their home. The ramifications for democracy are obvious. This is story #1.  Story #2 This ties in with the first story. I will begin to discuss the corporate interests behind Cop City and the obvious conflict of interest. I will also begin to discuss the danger of new laws which expand the definition of 'terrorism.'  We will also have our 'My Little Margie" segment and of course the "Jackass of the Week Award."  Come join me. In addition to the two charged, community members across Florida have been the target of FBI harassment that has included showing up at people's places of employment, approaching family members, and even executing a “No Knock Warrant,” with armed agents raiding the home of a family with children in the home. The FACE Act has been used to prosecute individuals who murdered abortion providers, physically threatened or attacked those seeking reproductive healthcare, barricaded abortion clinic entrances, and other anti-choice actions that have served to limit lawful access to abortion and other reproductive health care. Prosecuting two community activists for alleged graffiti is a shameful and disgusting use of the law.  In response, community members have formed the South Florida Anti-Repression Committee (SFLARC) and are launching a solidarity campaign and defense fundraiser. Sam speaks with Matthew Johnson, interim director of Beloved Community Ministries, to discuss the demonstrations surrounding Atlanta's "Cop City." Then, Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the backlash to the officers responsible for the killing of Tyre Nichols, the lies involved in the initial police report, cooling inflation numbers, George Santos taking a step back from his committees, and the US' response to political upheaval in Peru, before diving into coverage of Atlanta's “Stop Cop City” protests which, while driven by peace, has inspired Governor Brian Kemp to call in the National Guard. Matthew Johnson then joins as he dives right into the legislation and development of the Atlanta Police Department's “Cop City” training center, approved by Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms without knowledge of the City Council in 2021, and aimed at replacing the biggest urban forest in the US with the biggest militarized police training facility in the US. Contextualizing this decision, Johnson then walks through Atlanta's role as the most surveilled city in the US, the city with the worst racial income disparity, while featuring continuing gentrification and severe environmental racism, with a particular emphasis on the city's water supply, all of which are factors that would be seriously enflamed by the construction of Cop City over the Atlanta forest. Next, Matthew Johnson and Sam explore the movement defending the forest as a vast coalition that Kemp and the Atlanta PD are attempting to pass off as organized domestic terrorism, slapping serious charges on protesters alongside the typical abuses of police brutality, which culminated with the murder of community member Torta. They wrap up by discussing the importance of supporting places like Defend the Atlanta Forest and the Atlanta Solidarity Fund, and the future of this fight. And in the Fun Half: Tim Pool blames Defund the Police for fueling police brutality, Hochul continues to try to force herself into Cuomo's mold of Progressive-hating Democrat, and Dave Rubin dives into his experiences in the hall of the ever-kind and gracious Elon Musk. They also discuss the persistence of anti-vaxxer rhetoric despite the clear signs that the vaccine mitigated COVID-induced myocarditis, and CNBC rails against the Marxism in Joe Biden's FTC. In this episode, I speak with 3 activists working to STOP COP CITY – a highly militarized police training facility that would pave over one of the largest remaining forests in Atlanta. These 3 are part of a broad coalition of activists without centralized leadership who have come together to resist this development and defend the Atlanta Forest. Days after we recorded this episode, fellow activist and forest defender Tortuguita was shot and killed by the police during a massive raid. Calls for an independent investigation into this killing have been growing, as the version of events publicized by the police seems highly questionable. 7 more activists were arrested and charged with domestic terrorism.Cop City would be located right next to black and brown working class neighborhoods in Atlanta. These communities would be subjected to increased police harassment as well as the environmental consequences of destroying the forest: poorer air quality, hotter summers, and less protection from flooding. This $90 million military-grade urban warfare training center would be the largest facility of its kind in America. It would have a testing area for explosives, 12 firing ranges, a helicopter landing pad, and a center for practicing crowd control. In addition to boosting police morale and recruitment in the wake of the 2020 uprising, Cop City would serve a much more sinister function: to expand the police state and crush movement building in America and around the globe.In addition to exposing the fundamental connection between capitalism and policing, this episode examines the legacy of racial oppression that Cop City would inherit. We discuss the theft of this land from the Muscogee people as well as its use as a slave plantation and prison farm. We also address the important role that Indigenous and Queer activists have played within this movement.CALLS TO ACTION:*DONATE to the Atlanta Solidarity Fund to support legal costs *Call Atlanta Police Foundation investors, ask them to divest from Cop City (stopreevesyoung.com) *Form an action committee in your city!*GO TO THE PARK IN SOLIDARITY! RESOURCES:*Defend the Atlanta Forest website*Follow Defend the Atlanta Forest on  Twitter, IG, FB, Telegram,and TikTok*Al Jezeera video: Police vs Atlanta: The Battle Over Cop City*Democracy Now video with Kamau Franklin*Kamau Franklin's article in TruthOut: STOP COP CITY COCKTAIL:45mlBourbon Whiskey15mlPine Liqueur (or more bourbon)30mlBlueberry Shrubb (we'll post the recipe on Instagram)15mlElderberry syrupSoda waterAdd all ingredients except the soda water to a shaker and shake  with ice. MAD KILLERS! ANXIOUS WOMEN! TWISTED CRIMINAL PLOTS! CHIC INTERIOR DECORATING! PSYCHEDELIC FLASHBACKS! NEEDLESSLY LONG TITLES!!   Giallo – plural gialli – so-named for the cover color of pulp crime novels in Italy is a stylish world of psychosis and murder that has existed in some capacity since the early 1960s, but it wasn't until Dario Argento's 1970 classic, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, became a worldwide hit that the giallo fad really took the country by storm. The following year, 1971, was arguably the biggest in the genre's history, with a total of more than 40 films, several of which would become classics. Join super-fan Gabe and relatively apathetic returning guest Patrick Ripoll of Tracks of the Damned and Uptown Song Club as they explore a total of 12 titles in a two-part series.   Part one includes Sergio Martino's The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh (Italian: Lo strano vizio della Signora Wardh), Dario Argento's Cat O' Nine Tails (Italian: Il gatto a nove code), Lucio Fulci's Lizard in a Woman's Skin (Italian: Una lucertola con la pelle di donna), Enzo G. Castellari's Cold Eyes of Fear (Italian: Gli occhi freddi della paura), and José María Forqué's Eye of the Hurricane (Spanish: El ojo del huracán). In this episode we interview multiple people who've been involved in the struggle to Stop Cop City and Defend the Forest in Atlanta. What started as a political struggle against an extremely unpopular massive new police training facility has morphed and evolved in many different directions. We welcome Kamau Franklin from Community Movement Builders back to the platform for the third time for this conversation. He brings with him several folks with knowledge of the movement to stop cop city and what has become known as the Defend the Atlanta Forest movement. This is a conversation that touches on modes of liberal city governance and counterinsurgency against radical social movements like the uprisings that took place across the country in the summer of 2020 in response to many instances of police violence including the police lynching of George Floyd and in Atlanta specifically the police execution of Rayshard Brooks as well. Kamau along with Sara, Paul and River discuss some of the current political economy of the greater Atlanta metropolitan area and discuss different phases of the struggle to prevent the political approval and physical construction of the massive police training facility. Along the way we also get into conversations about some of the dynamics coalition which is diverse both in terms of political tendencies and traditions, but also in terms of its racial composition. We talk about of some of the tensions and issues that can arise from these circumstances. And there is some discussion of tactics and strategy as well that is specific to this struggle, which warrant broader consideration contingent of course on the conditions of other struggles. You can learn more and support at https://defendtheatlantaforest.org You can also contribute to the Atlanta Solidarity Fund as Sara recommends in the show: https://atlsolidarity.org to support folks who are facing repression and legal cases. And you can learn more and support Community Movement Builders at https://communitymovementbuilders.org. Also in Kamau's other role, he is a co-host of the Remix Morning Show on Black Power Media, make sure you check them out and support their work as well, this conversation would not have been what it was without Kamau's support and facilitation. Apologies that due to the number of guests and internet connections some of the audio cuts out at a couple points in the conversation. In all cases it resolves and hopefully minimal meaning and information is lost. But we encourage folks to stick with it even if the audio is a little frustrating in parts because the conversation offers so many important insights. And last but not least, if you like the work that we do here at Millennials Are Killing Capitalism. If you want to hear more conversations about dynamic social movements, revolutionary history, political theory, and tactical and strategic discussion, then join up with the awesome folks who support our show currently by becoming a patron of the show. This October marks the 5th anniversary of doing the show. We've hosted over 165 conversations in that period. And for those 5 years we're looking to add 50 patrons this month to help us sustain this work. 50 is a lot, but you can be one of those folks helping to support by just kicking in a dollar a month or by making a small annual contribution at patreon.com/millennialsarekillingcapitalism.

June 11th is the international day of solidarity with Marius Mason and all long-term anarchist prisoners. This year we want to explore the connections between long-term prisoner support and anti-repression efforts around recent uprisings, a sharp reminder to us that the difference between a status of imprisoned or not is often tenuous and temporary. With thousands of arrests for protesting, rioting, and property destruction from last summer's George Floyd uprising, we must be preparing for the possibility that more of our friends and other rebels may end up in prison. We're also seeking to find ways to facilitate interactions between our long-term prisoners and uprisings in the streets. We were happy to share the production of this episode with the lovely folks at June11.Org. To this end, we speak with: Cameron and Veera, who are part of a group that have been supporting prisoners from the Ferguson uprising for the last 7 years; Earthworm from Atlanta Solidarity Fund and ATL jail support ; Jeremy Hammond, formerly incarcerated anarchist and hacktivist, and his twin brother, Jason Hammond, who works with the Chicago Community Bond Fund. They produce the podcast, TwinTrouble They share with us their experiences with state repression, what motivates them, and some thoughts on what we can be doing to make us, our communities, and our liberatory movements more resilient. The speakers responded to questions in the same order throughout the conversation but didn't identify themselves much, so remember that the order and the projects they're involved in can be found in our show notes. You can learn more about Marius Mason and how to support him at SupportMariusMason.org. We had hoped to feature an interview they would facilitate with Giannis Dimitrakis for June 11th, however you'll see why this hasn't been possible. We hope he heals up quickly and would love to air that interview for the Week of Solidarity with Anarchist Prisoners in August: On 24/5, our comrade, a political prisoner, the anarchist Giannis Dimitrakis was transported to the hospital of Lamia, seriously injured after the murderous attack he suffered in Domokou prison. G. Dimitrakis barely survived the the attack, and the blows he received caused multiple hematomas in the head, affecting basic functions of his brain. A necessary condition for the full recovery of the partner is the complete and continuous monitoring of him in a specialized rehabilitation center by specialist doctors and therapists. In this crucial condition, the murderous bastards of the New Democracy government, M. Chrysochoidis, Sofia Nikolaou and their subordinates decide on Thursday June 3rd to transfer Giannis back to Domokos prison and even to a solitary confinement cell, supposedly for his health. Transferring our comrade there, with his brain functions in immediate danger, is for us a second attempt to kill him. Domokos prison does not meet in the slightest the conditions for the treatment and recovery of a prisoner in such a serious condition. Αs a solidarity movement in general, we are again determined not to leave our comrade's armor in their blood-stained hands. Nothing should be left unanswered, none of the people in charge of the ever-intensifying death policy that they unleash should be left out of our sights. Immediate transfer of our partner to a specialized rehabilitation center Hands down from political prisoners Solidarity and strength to the anarchist fighter G. Dimitrakis This is an invitation to engage June 11 in solidarity with Giannis Dimitrakis. On June 9th there will be a solidarity demo in Exarchia, Athens at 7pm! . ... . .. Resisting State Repression Panel The following is a conversation between folks involved in anti-repression work in 5 parts of the so-called US. The goal was to present a zoomed out vision of scope and patterns of repression since the Floyd Uprising of this summer, particularly as the US sits in a period of heightened tensions around the elections and continued killings by police. Please consider sharing this chat around. We need to be ready to push back against repression and support the mostly BIPOC folks facing heavy charges for hitting the streets against white supremacy. You'll hear from: Earthworm with the Atlanta Solidarity Fund and the Jail Support Team; Susan Samples from Grand Rapids with the Michigan Anti-Repression Committee (which works with the Michigan Bail Fund); Liam aka "Lil Guillotine" of the Free The 350, Madison General Defense Committee in Wisconsin; Mala from the Salt Lake General Defense Committee (works with the Salt Lake Community Bail Fund) in Utah; and Charlie from Puget Sound Prisoner Support (and works with the Northwest Community Bail Fund ) in Seattle. Stolen Lives In the conversation, we hear about a few cases of folks attacked and/or killed by police in the communities our guests come from and whose memories contributed to the Uprising where they were. These include: Rodney J. Freeman (killed by Dane County Police in Wisconsin); Elliot T. Johnson (killed by Monona Police in Wisconsin); Jacob Blake (brazenly injured by Kenosha Police); John T Williams (killed by Seattle Police); Charleena Lyles (killed by Seattle Police); Kevin Peterson, Jr. (killed by Clark County Sheriff deputies in Washington State); Bernardo Palacios-Carbajal (killed by Salt Lake City Police); Atlanta: Rayshard Brooks (killed by Atlanta Police);
