We've reached our bicent...episodial?!01:58 - ReminiscingToday we're looking back over more than three years of producing the CBP. Here are some our initial thoughts:-Our intro is still rocking a 2019 vibe. -Mom is usually pretty supportive, but… There's an episode out there somewhere from those very first episodes, and we would really love for them to stay buried deep in whatever pile of digital debris. Tyler poses a challenge: If we get to 100 ratings on Apple Podcasts within two months of today's episode, he'll share this embarrassment. -Tyler flashes back to the studio setup for those earliest episodes: Just a couple dudes and a big-screen TV.-Eddie recalls and early episodes with Pete DuMont, Clifton Harness, and more.09:08 - Whitey Tighties, Pete Rose and Cannibalistic HamstersEddie gives a shout-out to his favorite episode title. Our middle brother, Andy, joined us for this episode, which consisted of brotherly recollections. Poor guy passed out quite often. We cringe as we look back at our early rhythms and quirks. Tough stuff. 11:48 - Favorite episodesHere are a few that we look back on most fondly:-Going Analog in a Digital World - (feat. Eric Reinholdt of the 30x40 Design Workshop on Youtube) -Eric Anderson and his leg lamp-Todd Dawalt (who has his own podcast, Construction Leading Edge) and our discussion about the labor shortage as we headed into the pandemic -David Smigel and an early conversation about Starlink on jobsites-Roy Underhill of The Woodwright's Shop-Lego episode-The House that Sears Built-The RFI Blockchain-Matt Byrd of the Reality Capture Network-Donnie Williams and our conversation about supply chains19:15 - Surprise lessonsWe spend some time exploring what we've learned. Eddie shares that he'd thought he had the solutions that the construction industry needs. He has seen his understanding expand and has gained empathy.Tyler discusses leadership and the constraints that make it hard for higher-ups to do things the way that younger, less-experienced people think things ought to be done. We express our appreciation for the sometimes contentious discussions. We've seen growth result from the open exploration of points of disagreement. 28:00 - Echo chambersTyler dumps some thoughts about people pitching themselves as guests in order to discuss the fact that the industry is slow to accept technology. He disagrees. Eddie lists technologies that have been readily adopted because they increase our productivity and make us look more competent. He acknowledges that he'd look like an old man if he'd step back onto a residential-construction jobsite today with tools that didn't exist when he was working in that world. We discuss the program features and the types of content that we've chosen to leave behind.39:43 - Megaphone messageWe share our thoughts for the industry. Context & Clarity Podcast with Jeff Echols and Katharine MacPhail
There's a movement called F.I.R.E. That's an acronym that stands from Financially Independent. Retire Early. You may know Eric Reinholdt from one of his books or his video series from 30X40 Design Workshop, but Eric has a new project with his childhood friend Jason, The Two Sides of FI podcast. Eric and Jason explore what it means and how to become financially independent and what it would take to retire early.
This past week I had to cancel a project with a client due to site and existing restrictions due to the layout of the home. It's never a good conversation to have, but I cover how being honest with a client is always the best approach. Then I came across a video from another architect, Eric Reinholdt of 30X40 Design Workshop, where he states that specifying or drawing an element now prevents deferring to someone making a decision for you later in a project. I expand on this by giving two project examples where this statement holds true. (16:38) Here's a link to the video I talk about in this episode from 30X40 Design Workshop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4SvkO8G3K8&t=2s --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Today I talked to Eric Reinholdt about two excellent books: Architect + Entrepreneur Volume 1: A Field Guide (Design Workshop Press, 2015) and Architect + Entrepreneur Volume 2: A How-To Guide (Design Workshop Press, 2015). Architect + Entrepreneur: A Field Guide is filled with contemporary, relevant, fresh tips and advice, from a seasoned professional architect building a new business. The guide advocates novel strategies and tools that merge entrepreneurship with the practice of architecture and interior design. The Problem: Embarking on a new business venture is intimidating; you have questions. But many of the resources available to help entrepreneur architects and interior designers start their design business lack timeliness and relevance. Most are geared toward building colossal firms like SOM and Gensler using outdated methods and old business models. If you’re an individual or small team contemplating starting a design business, this is your field guide; crafted to inspire action. The Solution: Using the lean startup methodology to create a minimum viable product, the handbook encourages successive small wins that support a broader vision enabling one to “think big, start small, and learn fast.” It’s a unique take on design practice viewed through the lens of entrepreneurship and is designed to answer the questions all new business owners face, from the rote to the existential. Architect + Entrepreneur: A How-To Guide challenges the foundations of traditional practice and asks: + In what ways can we hack our craft to serve both our personal lifestyle and our professional goals? + What if design practice capitalized on the architect’s drive to be creative and consumer buying culture in equal measure? + How can we turn our services into products? + How can young professionals compete in today’s marketplace leveraging the power of the Internet? Reinholdt, founder of 30X40 Design Workshop describes in detail how his business model has evolved to leverage passive income producing products and offers a new paradigm for practice. It’s a manual of high-level strategies, field-tested tactics, and case studies showing how architects are reinventing practice in the 21st century. Bryan Toepfer, AIA, NCARB, CAPM is the Principal Architect for TOEPFER Architecture, PLLC, an Architecture firm specializing in Residential Architecture and Virtual Reality. He has authored two books, “Contractors CANNOT Build Your House,” and “Six Months Now, ARCHITECT for Life.” He is a professor at Alfred State College and the Director of Education for the AIA Rochester Board of Directors. Want a room by room guide to creating your healthy home? If you want to design your home so it supports your health and well-being, start by understanding key tips and strategies for each room. Hello, and welcome to Episode 9 of Season 10. I bring Kate Hamblet back this week, and we go into more detail about creating a healthy home, looking at your home and project room-by-room. If you haven’t heard last week’s episode, I introduced Kate there, so make sure you check that episode out as well. Kate is an architect with her own business, Balanced Architecture, and she’s a specialist in how our homes can be designed to support our health and wellbeing, so, let’s dive in. SHOW NOTES: In this podcast episode, we welcome Kate Hamblet back. Kate was on last week’s episode, discussing how to create a home that supports your health and well-being. This week, she takes us through some key spaces and rooms in your home, and how to design them so they improve your lifestyle, and make your home a healthy one. Kate is owner and architect at Balanced Architecture, and she’s a licensed architect and sustainability expert. (We met Kate in our episode last week, so if you haven’t listened to it, check it out now). Kate also is the architectural force behind the fantastic online business and resource, “Balanced Home, Balanced Life”, where she teaches homeowners everything she knows about creating healthy homes of their own. Kate also has her own online course “Designed for Wellness” to help you create your own healthy home, as well as packaged services for you to get advice and architectural support along your journey. Kate says on her own website ... “I started on the path of wellness design in 2015 and haven't looked back. When I first went back to work after having my son in 2014, the struggle to manage it all definitely hit me hard. There was stress at work, stress at home, minimal sleep, and so much to do! I barely made my way through that first year, and I knew something needed to change. I needed to find calm in my life as a working mom. Since I wasn't able to do too much about the stress at work, I decided to look at what was causing my stress at home. And then I realized that the house I was coming home to was not set up for providing wellness. It was actually hindering my and my family's health and happiness. I went to work making small adjustments to my home that had a big impact on our health and wellness. Within a few months I was seeing changes in my mood. I was eating better. I was getting a better night's sleep. I was more productive at work. And most importantly, the time I spent with my family improved dramatically. Creating a home that promoted wellness was a life saver for my happiness, my relationships and my sanity!” With well over a decade of architectural design experience, Kate has the expertise to guide families toward the creation of a home they will fall in love with, all while keeping them safe and encouraging a healthy lifestyle. Listen to the episode now. And be sure to get in touch with Kate to let her know you heard her on Undercover Architect, and to thank her for all they share!! This podcast is an edited version of the full interview with Kate. That interview is now featured inside my online course “The Welcome Home Course” for American homeowners. Head to https://undercoverarchitect.com/courses/the-welcome-home/ to learn more about “The Welcome Home Course”. In “The Welcome Home Course”, I’ve teamed up with award-winning American architect, Eric Reinholdt, to create a specific course for American homeowners. If you’re planning your renovation or new build, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and confused about the best way forward. Many homeowners make the mistake of diving in, and fall for all sorts of terrible advice as a result. And the journey becomes far more stressful, expensive and time consuming as a result. And their finished home never lives up to the dreams they held so dear. When you have the steps to follow … the map for your journey ahead, you can then move confidently towards that future home you’re dreaming of, and not waste any time or money. When you know that step-by-step system has been created over decades of experience in hundreds and hundreds of family homes like yours, you can save so much stress in your project, and create a home that works and feels great. And when you have the steps, as well as professional know-how, design knowledge, tools, resources, and guides, you can shortcut your journey, enjoy your experience, and avoid the heartache and drama so many experience. If you’re keen to make your journey simpler, be confident that the home you’re dreaming of is achievable, and know the steps to get you there …’The Welcome Home Course’ is the way. Together with Eric, we’ve packaged up almost 45 years experience to show you the way to your future family home. As a homeowner, for you to know the steps to finding a contractor or builder you can trust, it can be game-changing for your new build or renovation. SHOW NOTES: So, let me tell you a bit more about Shawn. Shawn Van Dyke is a construction business coach and the author of two books: Profit First for Contractors and The Paperwork Punch List - 28 Days to Streamline Your Construction Business. Most contractors are not profitable which makes them feel uncertain about what they need to do to grow their construction businesses. Shawn believes construction business owners should be as good at business as they are at their craft. That's why, after twenty plus years of owning and operating multiple construction businesses, Shawn became a construction business coach. He now works with construction business owners, executives, and managers all over the world and shows them how to stop losing profits and wasting time. Shawn helps contractors get their lives back. Shawn is based in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he lives with his wife and 5 kids. I ASKED SHAWN VAN DYKE THESE QUESTIONS ... You’re on a mission to change the way the world views the trades. What do you think this view is / has been? What do you think one of the biggest hurdles is to improving the impression that homeowners have of the construction industry, contractors and trades? What should a homeowner do to know they can trust their contractor before they hire them? You encourage your contractor community to charge for their pricing process. Can you talk through why you think this is beneficial for both contractors / builders and homeowners? You shared a great blog and video on “Transparency is not trust” that talked about what line-item quoting doesn’t work. Can you explain more about why this is not great for the homeowner or the builder / contractor? When problems occur, what are your suggestions for contractors to deal with these with their clients, and keep things moving overall? Listen to the episode now. https://entrearchitect.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/ewrheadshot3closer-300x300.jpg ()Many of us have a dream of starting our own firm. Others of us have already taken the plunge and launched. The first question, after we make that fateful decision is, How do we find work? “How do we get noticed by the clients with whom we want to work?” This week's guest on the EntreArchitect Podcast has some answers for us. He's a residential architect based on the eastern coast of the United States, way up north in Maine on an Island called Mt. Dessert and he has developed and tested some very interesting ways to get noticed and fill his boards with the high end residential projects that we all want to design. This week on the EntreArchitect Podcast, we are speaking with architect Eric Reinholdt of 30X40 Design Workshop and author of the new book http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1511750170/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1511750170&linkCode=as2&tag=entrearchitect-20&linkId=MSKAXIAGUD7ENZCP (Architect and Entrepreneur: A Field Guide to Building, Branding, and Marketing Your Startup Design Practice). This is the first episode in our new Field Guide Series where Eric and I will dive deep and share Routines, Rituals, Tips, and Tricks for Hacking Your Design Practice and Becoming an Successful Entrepreneur Architect.
