Ian Failes chats to Chris Nichols, director of special projects at the Chaos Innovation Lab, about Chaos' Project Arena. This is an upcoming toolset that lets artists move V-Ray assets and animations to LED walls.
With V-Ray 6 for Maya and Houdini, update 2, Chaos adds an important feature to its powerful renderer: MaterialX support. With this addition, artists and studios can seamlessly use materials across different DCCs and get identical results, removing many of the pain points of increasingly complicated modern 3D pipelines. In this podcast, V-Ray for Maya Product Manager Alex Yolov and V-Ray for Houdini Product Manager Gosho Genchev reveal how they've worked with studios to implement MaterialX in the latest software updates. They also tackle some frequently asked questions about MaterialX, such as how it works and whether it can be used with existing projects, and they reveal some of the additional features that have recently been added to V-Ray.
Archviz artists love Chaos Corona. This renderer has become a go-to for visualizing everything from compact kitchens to sky-scraping towers, giving users stunning results straight out of the box. But what's on the horizon for this popular renderer? In this podcast, Product Manager Tom Grimes discusses what makes Chaos Corona a popular choice for the architecture industry and how its philosophy differs from other renderers such as V-Ray. He also talks about the software's future and plans to make it an integral part of the Chaos ecosphere, as well as how it's getting real-time functionality via Chaos Vantage.

Audio of Dunn v. Ray (2019) Dissenting; Dunn v. Smith (2021) Concurring (Applications to Vacate Stay/Injunction; Inmate Execution; Religious Freedom) Tip: Dunn v. Smith (2021) begins around minute 10:06, after the reading of Dunn v. Ray (2019) In 2019, Alabama had a policy holding that only their approved Christian chaplain was permitted to enter the execution chamber during execution - regardless of the inmate's religious beliefs. When Dominique Ray, a Muslim man, requested that his imam be present instead, Alabama refused - eventually changing their policy to exclude all clergy in the execution chamber. When the Supreme Court was asked to intervene, the application for stay was denied, with only the Court's four liberal justices voting for Ray. About a month later, a Buddhist inmate asked the Court to intervene in Texas when they wouldn't allow his spiritual advisor into the execution chamber and the Court intervened to allow it - with Justices Kavanaugh and Robert's added vote. Somehow, these two conservative justices had a change of heart in this case. But, when a third almost-identical case from Alabama appeared before the Court in 2021, Kavanaugh and Roberts once again had another change of heart, only back in the opposite direction, dissenting. In that case, when Willie Smith, a Christian man, asked the Court to intervene after Alabama denied his request for a Christian pastor to enter the execution chamber with him, the Court intervened to allow it. Again, two conservatives voted with the liberal justices; but, this time, they were the newly-seated Justice Barrett and one "mystery" Justice that could have only been Justice Alito or Justice Gorsuch since Kavanaugh, Roberts, and Thomas dissented. These three cases had nearly identical circumstances. What would have made Kavanaugh and Roberts vote so differently for the Buddhist man, Patrick Murphy? After all, Kavanaugh and Roberts are both Christians who have been accused in the past of being unjustly preferential to the freedom of Christian's first amendment rights over other religions. But, Smith, the third prisoner was the only Christian out of the three. Other than the prisoner's religion and the states they were from, the facts of the three cases were nearly identical save for one other major factor: Patrick Murphy, the Buddhist inmate, was white. Because the Court did not issue an opinion in Patrick Murphy's case, the only two opinions I can read for you today are those of the two black inmates whom Justices Kavanaugh, Roberts, Thomas, and one other conservative justice voted against both times: Dunn v. Ray (2019) and Dunn v. Smith (2021). These two opinions are very brief, so I will be reading them both this episode. Music by Epidemic Sound

Could Muse's “You Make Me Feel Like It's Halloween” become the soundtrack for the spooky season? The legendary rock band's song is packed with references to classic horror tales, and the music video brings the lyrics to life (or should that be death?) with a spooktacular trip into a deeply haunted house. In this podcast the video's director, Tom Teller discusses the creative process behind the promo, from collaborating with the band and coming up with ideas, to its final execution with V-Ray rendering. Tom also talks about founding his company, Frame 48, finding clients, AI and art, and his exciting upcoming projects with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute.

Ray Tracing is overhyped. At least this is what most visual effects artists thought when it took an ungodly amount of hours to render a single frame, including Chris. Years ago, rendering architecture felt endless. Today, technology has caught up. Where ray tracing on any rig used to be requirement heavy, now clean rendering is possible on a laptop. Chris has worked on massive films like After Tomorrow, I.Robot and Stealth, a film which presented an incredible amount of challenges in architecture rendering. He's been involved in the visual effects industry for so long that he was one of the first to demo the ground-breaking car simulator that they eventually used on the visual masterpiece, Tron. Did we mention that he's been around for a while? Chris probably bought the first license of VRay tracing software EVER. Chris was one of the first ever to bring ray tracing into visual production. You could consider Chris Nichols a pioneer; a trailblazer even! He is the director of Chaos Labs, a group of like-minded creative individuals that are pushing the boundaries of the computer graphics industry to the next level. This is the episode where he talks about his knowledge and experience in the industry, along with the latest tools and technologies such as Houdini and the potential of VRay tracing as the visual rendering technology of the future. If you're curious about what lies ahead for the visual effects industry, this is an amazing episode you need to watch. Laptop or PC? What specs? How much RAM? What CPU? What GPU? What storage device? How can I choose the best? Which one do I buy? There are so many variations of computers that architecture students can choose from. It can be quite overwhelming. In today's episode of the Successful Architecture Student's Podcast, I explain whether you should buy a PC or Laptop for architecture school and which one is the best. I also explain how you can decide what hardware you need, and the difference your RAM, CPU Processor, GPU Processor and Storage Devices have on the work you do.Prefer listening/reading? Check out the show notes:https://successfularchistudent.com/16▼GET THE FREE ARCHI STUDENT SUCCESS CHECKLIST▼→ https://successfularchistudent.com/ ←Get my new ebook! “How to Ace Any Project in Architecture School” https://successfularchistudent.com/how-to-ace-any-project/When buying a laptop or PC computer, I say there are 4 general rules of thumb.1)You need at least 16GB of RAM (computer memory). RAM is what is used when working on photoshop, rendering programs such as 3DS Max, VRAY and Lumion. If you have less than 16GB of memory, your computer will struggle with these programs.2)You should have at least an i7 processor/CPU. This is what limits how fast you can render 3D models.3)You should have a 1TB SSD (minimum) for your main storage device. Alternatively, you can use a smaller sized SSD and use a Hard Drive to store your files. This is a cheaper option.4)Your Graphics Card, or GPU, determines how quickly and error-free you can view your 3D models in the workspace. A better GPU will allow you to work more efficiently when modelling and creating things in post-render programs such as photoshop. Before making any purchases, I suggest you benchmark the RAM, CPU, SSD OR GPU that you want to buy. This will give you an indication of its ability compared to other hardware out there. You can use sites such as Passmark for this. Just google “CPU benchmark” for example.
On this week's session, I'm joined by Lon Grohs from Chaos Group in Los Angeles. You probably know Lon from his days at Neoscape, but today he's an integral member of the Chaos Group executive team — overseeing company strategy, brand, and founder of the Chaos Group Labs. On this session, we focus mainly on the six degrees of freedom in VR as well as upcoming projects that are cooking up in the Chaos Group Labs. He'll be in attendance at the SOA Academy Day this weekend, 6-7 October 2017. Here is your chance to get to know a little more about Lon before then. Big News in VR We kick off this session with big news — Chaos Group just announced that they would be joining forces with Epic Games to make V-Ray for Unreal Engine. Lon says it's been on their radar for awhile, and now it's finally happening. The goal with this merger is to make the dream of seeing ArchViz projects in real-time a reality. Although a timeline isn't in place yet, they're working to create as many ways as possible to improve the AR and VR experience by building a bridge to the real-time engines their customers are using. Six Degrees of Freedom (6DoF) Lon also shares their plans to open up the doors to VR from three degrees to six degrees of freedom. Six degrees of freedom will give architects and their clients the ability to move around freely in their renderings. Lon calls this a “room scale” experience, and the most natural experience that you can have in a virtual space. He shares the technologies that will create the best VR experience, including Nozon and Lytro, and the differences between the two. Artist or Client — Who's Using VR? In my experience, VR is more user-friendly for the artist than it is for the client. When I asked Lon who should expect to have the most significant experience with these technologies, he told me it is for everyone. From the artists and their team to the client presentations, their goal is to create a technology that can easily be used throughout the entire project. Although still in the experimental phases of creating the six degrees of freedom in every VR experience, Lon and his partners at Chaos Group are definitely well on their way to figuring it all out. We discuss the role that architectural education had in Lon's career, upcoming projects, new technologies, and some of Lon's biggest ideas yet. A whole lot is coming down the pipeline at Chaos Group, and you can hear all about inside this session of The SpectRoom with Lon Grohs.
