Sign-up for my free 20-day devotional, The Word Before Work Foundations, at http://TWBWFoundations.com--Series: Wisdom for Work from PhilippiansDevotional: 1 of 4For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. (Philippians 1:21-22)Today, we're kicking off a new series exploring wisdom for our work from Paul's letter to the Philippians, looking at one insight from each of the book's four chapters. We begin in chapter 1 with Paul's words that—so long as he's alive—he will give himself to “fruitful labor” for the kingdom. Those words are countercultural today as retirement remains a goal for the vast majority of Americans. And thanks to the growing “Financial Independence, Retire Early” FIRE movement, Gen Z plans to retire earlier than any previous generation at the ripe young age of 54.How do these people plan to spend the second half of life? The social media bio of a leader of the FIRE movement is telling to that end: “Mr. Money Mustache was a thirtysomething retiree who now writes about how we can all lead a frugal yet Badass life of leisure.”This idea of trading hard work for endless leisure finds zero support in Scripture. Theologian Dr. R. Paul Stevens puts it bluntly: “there is no concept of retirement in the Bible.”Which is why Paul wrote constantly about the Christian's call to work hard as long as we “go on living in the body.” 1 Corinthians 15:58 is just one example: “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.”And let's not forget that while many of us are chasing financial independence, Jesus chased financial dependence (see Matthew 8:20 and Luke 8:2-3). And while many of us are calculating when we can stop working, Jesus said he glorified the Father by finishing the work the Father gave him to do (see John 17:4).God may call you to retire from the work you do for pay. But I guarantee you that he won't call you to retire from “abounding in the work of the Lord.”Now, before you financial advisors reply to this email in outrage, hear this: There is nothing wrong with saving money for a day when you may no longer be able to work for pay. I do! But to call yourself an image bearer of Christ and then trade a productive life with a life of endless leisure is to take the Lord's name in vain. You know how lightbulbs shine brightest just before they burn out? That is a picture of the life of Paul and the life of Christ that you and I are made to image. Resolve to image him well as you seek fruitful labor today and to the very end.

When was the last time you truly felt at peace? Like, stress-free, heart-full, and genuinely content? In today's grind culture, we've been conditioned to believe that success equals more money, more hustle, and more stuff. But here's the truth bomb: peace is the new profit—and it's worth way more than any dollar amount in your bank account. In this episode of the Happy Hustle Podcast, I'm diving deep into why reducing stress and prioritizing peace is the ultimate life upgrade. I'll break down six key reasons why choosing joy, fulfillment, and balance will always trump chasing wealth. Debt-Free = FreedomHere's the thing about debt: it's a peace killer. You're constantly thinking about repayments, interest rates, and whether you can even afford that extra guac at Chipotle. I've been there—racked up $16K in credit card debt in my early 20s. It was suffocating. But guess what? Within a year, I flipped the script, went debt-free, and saved $20K in liquid cash. Freedom feels lighter. It gives you options. It's not about avoiding all debt forever (strategic debt can work), but having control over your finances is a game-changer for peace.Invest in YourselfYou are the best investment you'll ever make, period. Skills pay the bills—write that one down. When you invest in personal growth—whether it's taking a course, learning a new skill, or just reading a good book—you're not just building your career; you're building confidence. And confidence brings clarity, which leads to better decisions, less stress, and, you guessed it, more peace.Build Financial StabilityChasing trends won't bring you peace. Sure, crypto or AI might be the hot thing, but slow and steady wins the race. Focus on creating a stable business or revenue stream that covers your monthly expenses. That's your Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) number. Knowing your basics are covered gives you the freedom to dream bigger—without the stress.Boring Investments Are SexyThe “boring” stuff—like index funds or real estate—can bring peace because they're predictable and steady. No late-night stress checking stock prices or wondering if you'll lose it all in a market dip. Peace comes from stability, my friends.Say No to Hustle CultureRunning on empty just to chase some external validation? Instead, focus on harmonizing your ambition with your well-being. That means saying no to things that don't serve you—even if they're lucrative—and saying yes to what lights you up inside.Focus on Your ImpactChasing money for the sake of money will leave you feeling empty. But chasing impact? That's fulfilling. When you know your work makes a difference—whether it's helping others, building a legacy, or creating something meaningful—that's the kind of profit that money can't buy.Peace doesn't happen by accident, my friends. It's intentional. You have to actively choose it—sometimes over money, sometimes over convenience. But let me tell you, it's worth it. Imagine walking into 2025 with a clear mind, a full heart, and the freedom to do what you love without stress weighing you down.Start small. Look at your finances, invest in yourself, and build a life that prioritizes peace. Because at the end of the day, peace truly is the new profit.Connect with Cary!https://www.instagram.com/caryjack/https://www.facebook.com/SirCaryJackhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/cary-jack-kendzior/https://twitter.com/thehappyhustlehttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFDNsD59tLxv2JfEuSsNMOQ/featuredGet a free copy of his new book, The Happy Hustle, 10 Alignments to Avoid Burnout & Achieve Blissful Balance https://www.thehappyhustle.com/bookSign up for The Journey: 10 Days To Become a Happy Hustler Online Course https://thehappyhustle.com/thejourney/Apply to the Montana Mastermind Epic Camping Adventure https://thehappyhustle.com/mastermind/“It's time to Happy Hustle, a blissfully balanced life you love, full of passion, purpose, and positive impact!”Episode Sponsor: Magnesium Breakthrough from BiOptimizers https://bioptimizers.com/happyIf you've been on a restricted diet lately or maybe even taken some meds to shed those pounds for the summer, I gotta warn ya—be careful! Pravin continues to share Bitcoin content, encourages Bitcoin adoption wherever she can, and has started saving Bitcoin for various ministries, extending her advocacy for early financial independence through Bitcoin not just for herself but as a social mission.00:03 Introduction to Financial Independence and the FIRE Movement00:46 Welcome to Orange Hatter: A Bitcoin Retreat for Women02:16 Pravin's Bitcoin Journey: From Skepticism to Belief11:48 Understanding Money and the Impact of Inflation13:54 The FIRE Movement and Investment Strategies17:42 Bitcoin: A Solution to Financial Challenges19:03 Spreading Bitcoin Awareness in the Christian Community24:19 The Importance of Financial Health and Early Retirement25:04 Choosing Life Over Material Things25:13 Budgeting and Prioritizing for Financial Freedom26:40 Teaching Children About Bitcoin27:47 Connecting with the Bitcoin Community28:00 Health Consciousness and Bitcoin29:52 The Struggle Between Healthy Food and Fiat Food30:42 The Impact of Rising Prices and Economic Struggles32:24 Exploring Alternative Health Practices35:18 The Role of Bitcoin in Preserving Wealth37:17 The Urgency of Bitcoin Adoption38:20 Spreading the Word About Bitcoin39:39 The Future of Bitcoin and Its Impact43:15 The Importance of Bitcoin in Times of Crisis45:30 Closing Thoughts and ReflectionsPravin's Resources: https://www.choosefi.com/https://youtu.be/jVEk-q5hiFE?si=eKFXegh6hh5wk4kFhttps://youtu.be/l5pGXx2lPAQ?si=2gvBk0dkHxaVXkA-https://youtu.be/RyF40JydVNU?si=xxzL2eOlN2nItJYeYoutube Channel: @Pravin_Yeshua_BTC*** Check out the Orange Hatter Women's Retreat at www.orangehatter.com/yucatan ***To learn more about Bitcoin: Join the Orange Hatter Women's Reading Club. Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) is a movement defined by frugality and extreme savings and investment. It's also a dumb philosophy. Why? Because it is a perfectly normal human desire to accumulate material positions. Consumption is not immoral, and depriving yourself for several years only to continue living in deprivation doesn't make any sense. The FIRE followers have it backwards: You don't gain self-esteem and happiness from no stress. You get these things from overcoming stress through work and achievement.

Jackie Cummings Koski has overcome poverty, divorce, and the struggles of single motherhood. Yet, she was able to retire from her corporate job of 20 years in 2019 at the early age of 49! That whole time, she's made less than six figures. Jackie sits down with Stephanie and Kevin to discuss how she overcame those adversities and the wake-up call that totally changed her view of her finances. Four years later, after leaving corporate America, 53-year-old Jackie is following her big dream of creating a financially-literate society! Listen in as she shares an inspiring journey that began in rural South Carolina, where she lived below the poverty line in a single-parent household alongside her six siblings. Committed to “not grow up poor,” Jackie decided to study all she can about investing and the stock market and joined the Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) community later on. Years after beginning to implement what she's learned, Jackie was able to put together a powerful cash flow strategy for retirement despite never earning beyond six figures in her sales career. Coupling her realization that “you don't have to be wealthy to teach about money” with her dream to make a real impact on the world, Jackie has dedicated her post-retirement life to educating others on financial literacy. That began with her daughter, to whom Jackie dedicated her 2014 book Money Letters 2 My Daughter. Key Topics: Jackie's long journey to successfully retiring from her corporate job at 49 (2:25) Getting over the fear of investing following her divorce (9:06) Creating a plan to have enough saved for retirement (14:47) Writing the book Money Letters 2 My Daughter (16:17) Jackie's thoughts on the financial planning industry (20:48) How Jackie's definition of retirement changed over time (26:18) What drew Jackie to the FIRE community (30:05) Creating an “anti-budget” (35:12) The importance of doing a net worth statement (39:27) Advice to those looking to build up their retirement account in today's economy (44:17) Stephanie and Kevin's closing thoughts (49:19) Follow Jackie Koski on Instagram at www.instagram.com/finomenal_woman. Legendary investor and noted philanthropist David Rubenstein of The Carlyle Group says that today's inflation feels like the 1970s, a time that taught investors that it is hard to get inflation out of the system. That has left the economy "treading water," trying to get comfortable with how the situation will play out before it can move forward; in the interim he expects low econnimc growth stopping short of recession, inflation that heads down but not all the way to the Fed's 2 percent, target, with war in Ukraine being a significant economic wildcard. In a wide-ranging interview, Rubenstein talks about whether politics now creates economic headwinds and how the money in politics is furthering the divides, about modern philanthropy and the satisfaction of giving, about happily speeding up in retirement, and more. Gwen Merz, the blogger behind FieryMillennials.com talks about her changing financial journey, one which saw her start as a hardcore member of the Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) crowd, but which now has her more relaxed about her finances and, as a result, happier and more content with her life. Also, Chuck answers a question from the audience about the Gerber Grow-Up Plan, which he made a "Stupid Investment of the Week" when he started that column roughly 20 years ago, which he felt was still putrid when he stopped writing the column a decade later, and which he thinks remains horrid now, but which will keep attracting suckers -- and we don't mean pacifiers -- for as long as families have babies.

The model became particularly popular among millennials in the 2010s, gaining traction through online communities via information shared in blogs, podcasts, and online discussion forums. Those seeking to attain FIRE intentionally maximize their savings rate by finding ways to increase income and/or decrease expenses, along with aggressive investments that again increases their wealth and/or income. The objective is to accumulate assets until the resulting passive income provides enough money for living expenses throughout one's retirement years. Many proponents of the FIRE movement suggest the 4% rule as a rough withdrawal guideline, thus setting a goal of at least 25 times one's estimated annual living expenses. Upon reaching financial independence, paid work becomes optional, allowing for retirement from traditional work decades earlier than the standard retirement age. Today Dan talks to one of our favorite writers Sam Dogan, the man behind ‘Financial Samurai'. And Sam has recently written a book called ‘Buy This, Not That', laying out the ideas and strategies he learnt not only from his decade long career at Goldman Sachs but also investing personally and interacting with the many millions of visitors to his blog. This week's discussion ranges from why the traditional ‘Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE)' model, of which Sam was an early pioneer, is now outdated; the reasons you can't just ‘set and forget' your financial planning but need to think about opitimizing it for the different decades of your life; and what it's like to be involved in writing a book for a major publisher: “One of the reasons why I don't want to write another book is because it's so painful. A lot of cooks in the kitchen. They're all on your side, they want to make the book amazing, inclusive and a success. But I'm not used to that, I'm used to waking up at 5am writing, and then I'm done. I send it to my dad and he makes some edits. And we're good.”

Have you encountered the FIRE movement or mindset? Let's get it straight we're not talking about burning things down. It's a kind of lifestyle of saving and investing a big chunk of your income to be able to retire earlier than 65 years old. We'll share this concept in simple terms and discuss if it's possible. You either have a little or a lot, but it seems for most people, you never have enough. And for as critical as it is, it's amazing how little most of us actually understand it. In ancient times, if human beings wanted something from someone else, they bartered. I'll give you a cow if you give me salt or tobacco. Somewhere around 5,000 BC, metal objects were used as money. And then around 700 BC, a group called the Lydians were the first in the Western world to make coins that were used as money. Not long after that, countries started to make their own coins and give them certain values. That way people could compare the cost of items or services that people wanted. China was the first country to introduce paper money. Paper money became more common by 960 AD. We still rely on paper money and coins for much of our day-to-day spending and purchasing. But we also rely heavily on a cashless society. Credit cards, loans, and now thanks to our digital world – Venmo, online spending using passwords that access our financial accounts without anything physical changing hands. And, of course, crypto. We're fast moving into an almost totally cashless world. And it seems to be happening at the speed of light. Adam Carroll is an author and a speaker on the subject of personal finance. He has spent the better part of his career and life helping people better understand money, how it fits in their lives, how to manage it, and how to be financially free. This One for the Money podcast episode is all about the Financial Independence, Retire Early movement known as FIRE. I'm your host, Jonny West, and I'm going to be teaching you tips, tricks, and strategies you can use to retire early. We'll also discuss Health Savings Accounts, which are a great way to save for healthcare expenses now and in retirement. I hope you'll find this episode helpful for your retirement goals! In this episode...Financial Independence, Retire Early [00:31] What to consider before early retirement [04:11] Health Savings Accounts [06:37] Thank goodness it's Monday! Most of the people I know would never utter that phrase. Generally, the goal to work toward is the weekend, not going back to work. That's why the notion of early retirement is appealing to so many. People want more time to do what they want to do. That's why the Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) movement is so popular. The principal strategy behind this movement is being a super-saver. That typically means saving between 50% and 70% of income each year by having higher incomes and living frugally. To give some perspective, when planning to retire at age 65, I recommend clients save between 10% and 15% of their income each year into retirement accounts. FIRE adherents often save in non-retirement accounts because distributions occur before age 59½. Life after retirementAfter saving sufficient income, FIRE adherents retire from work and use their savings to generate income while continuing to live frugally. They can live off their income from portfolio gains, dividends, and interest without touching the original investment. After retirement, some people even move to less expensive locales so their retirement incomes can go further. Early retirement requires a lot of planning. My financial planning clientele consists of several early retirees and clients who are on track to do so. You may be surprised to hear that these people didn't have significant incomes. Instead, they lived well within their means and invested the difference. My financial planning practice specializes in taking clients like these through early retirement and helping ensure that the next stage of life is just as meaningful. HSAsHealth Savings Accounts are the only investment that is triple tax-free. The contributions are tax-deductible. Both the growth and distributions are tax-free when used for qualifying medical expenses. To be eligible for an HSA, you must have a qualifying high deductible medical plan. The money in an HSA can be used at any time to cover health care expenses. But to see the full benefit, you'll want to let the money grow and pay for current healthcare expenses from other sources of personal savings when possible. My younger listeners may think that they can wait until later. Remember, the sooner you invest your money, the longer it has time to grow. The average couple will need about $285,000 in retirement for medical expenses, not including long-term care. That's a ton of money and is why you want to consider HSAs as a great way to save for future medical expenses. Taking small steps to financial independence can have a big impact on your retirement. Many people talk about F.I.R.E or financial independence, retire early. But what are the steps you should take to get there? And does F.I.R.E look the same for everyone? In this episode, my guest, Doug Nordman shares the steps you can take to F.I.R.E., how to handle debt in the process, and how to leverage your military benefits to achieve financial independence faster. Doug served for 20 years of active duty in the U.S. Navy's submarine force and retired in 2002 at the age of 41. He and his spouse, a retired Navy Reservist, reached financial independence in 1999 on a high savings rate. He's the author of “The Military Guide To Financial Independence And Retirement” and founder of The-Military-Guide.com. With his daughter Carol Pittner, he's the co-author of "Raising Your Money-Savvy Family For Next Generation Financial Independence" through ChooseFI Media. Is Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) actually
Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) is a financial movement defined by frugality and extreme savings and investment. We talk about its relevance with the youth today. / Sequels written by AI surprised readers. Will AI replace writers? / This push to suspend divorces on a day for lovers has backfired.
Most of us don't enter our careers with the aim of retiring early, and our guest this week certainly didn't think early retirement would be an option when he stopped enjoying his career. Chris Mamula qualified as a physiotherapist in Utah but quickly realised he did not want to stay in the industry for 30 or 40 more years. When his wife discovered she was pregnant, Chris dived into the world of personal finance and discovered the Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) movement. Having spent their entire marriage living off one salary and saving the other, Chris found that the maths and core values of the FIRE movement resonated with him. Since discovering the FIRE movement, Chris has used his personal journey as inspiration to write about how others could live the best life possible and retire early. Partnering with others passionate about gaining financial independence, Chris has written a book Choose FI: Your Blueprint to Financial Independence, and runs the blog Can I Retire yet? In our conversation, Chris shares his attitude towards money, and how that has helped him, and his wife, reach financial independence and retire at the age of just 40 years old. Chris also talks to us about redefining retirement, and how you should live the life you want to at every stage of your life.

Aren't we all supposed to work for 40 years, retire at 65, take social security, and ride off into the sunset? APPARENTLY NOT! Millennials have started a revolution of retiring early and have dubbed it the Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) movement. There's more guesswork involved in retirement planning than we'd like to admit. If you've ever gone through the retirement planning process with a financial advisor, you know what I mean. To calculate how much money you'll need for retirement, you need to factor in the expected inflation rate as well as the expected growth rate of your investments. If you had the ability to know those things with any degree of certainty, you wouldn't need to do any retirement planning because you'd be psychic. One of the most crucial guesses you have to make is how much money you'll need in retirement. It's hard for us to imagine our lives a week from now, much less decades into the future. How do we tackle this dilemma? The Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) movement offers a useful rule of thumb to help here. To ensure you have enough money to retire and never run out of money, you need 300 times your monthly expenses. This is an excellent shorthand, because it forces you to put as much effort as possible towards controlling what leaves your account every month. However, using your current expenses would be to over-prepare. Some of your current expenses go towards preparing for your retirement. Your long-term savings and your long-term insurance products exist solely for this purpose. Once you reach financial independence, you go from having to look to others for an income to paying yourself. That means your cost of living will automatically reduce by the amount of money you put towards retirement the minute you reach financial independence. Once you've accumulated enough assets, self-insurance becomes a reality. Stealthy Wealth does an excellent job of explaining how that works in this post. That's another expense you can take off the list. But what about the hobbies you plan to take up once you have more time? How should you plan on paying for those? What if you wanted to take a holiday? In this week's episode, we talk through how you can think about your expenses in retirement when you're working out your financial independence number. We are once again so grateful to OUTvest for funding this week's episode. If you're looking for a place to save towards your retirement goals, have a look at their excellent product here. It is possible to work so hard at school and university to get top grades which give you a suite of distinctions and awards, but at what cost to friendships, hobbies, physical and mental health? I know many adults who because of the sacrifices they made to achieve those things have always had that as a huge part of their identity. I'm sure you know, for example, middle aged men who are still called by their nickname from school or are part of the old boys club. Really? Your qualifications are only important so far as you can actually make practical use of them. Who cares if you qualified as a doctor cum laude from Cambridge university if you are unprofessional, unkind and thoughtless? Or if you can't even balance your personal finances

At age 37, Patrick Mckay had amassed enough assets to sustain his lifestyle without ever having to earn an income again. In the biz, this is what we call financial independence. The Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) movement has enabled many younger people to think differently about their expenses and assets. Even if you love your job, understanding basic FIRE concepts like the 4% rule is a great framework for making better financial choices. But what about people who are further along their journey? Is it possible to apply these principles in your fifties? In this show, Patrick and I discuss how older people with insufficient retirement savings can use FIRE to ensure a financially secure retirement.
