What if the key to greater creativity, profitability, and peace of mind isn't working harder—but creating better systems? In this episode, Kimberley Seldon sits down with Northern Virginia landscape designer Ellie Black to discuss what changed when she stopped reinventing the wheel and started implementing proven processes. Together, they explore why so many creative professionals resist structure, how boundaries improve the client experience, and why systems are essential for sustainable growth. Whether you specialize in interiors, landscapes, or both, this conversation will help you create a business that supports your creativity instead of draining it. In this episode, we learn: • Why systems and processes create more freedom, creativity, and profitability • How the BOD™ 15-Step Process helped Ellie transform her landscape design business • Why boundaries, policies, and clear communication increase client trust • The difference between being busy and working strategically • How delegation frees up time for higher-value creative work • Why outdoor spaces should be designed as a natural extension of the home • Practical tools for reducing overwhelm, improving focus, and avoiding burnout
Artspeak Radio, Wednesday, July 1, 2026, 9am -10am CST, 90.1fm KKFI Kansas City Community Radio, streaming live audio www.kkfi.org Producer/host Maria Vasquez Boyd welcomes Kansas Poet Laureate Traci Brimhall and artist/writer Jim Ramirez. TRACI BRIMHALL is a university distinguished professor of creative writing at Kansas State University, as well as the 2025 Poet-in-Residence at the Guggenheim. She is the author of five collections of poetry, most recently Love Prodigal (Copper Canyon Press, 2024). Her nonfiction debut, The Grief Artist, will be published by Sarabande Books in 2026. Known for her poems that often marry the ordinary with the surreal, Brimhall's work has appeared widely in journals and magazines such as The New Yorker, Orion, The Atlantic, The New Republic, Poetry, The Nation, and The New York Times Magazine. Through fellowships with the National Endowment of the Arts, National Park Service, and Academy of American Poets she's taught writing workshops in farm schools, art museums, libraries, medical communities, and the outdoors. She's also received a Karnes Fellowships through Purdue Library's Special Collections to study the lost poem drafts of Amelia Earhart. She is the current poet laureate of Kansas, where her initiatives have centered on uniting the state's agricultural roots with the literary arts. Through poetry cookbooks, food-based mad lib poems, and bringing poetry to the State Fair, her literary arts advocacy seeks ways to bring the nourishment of language to all Kansans. As Poet Laureate of Kansas, Brimhall will conduct public readings, workshops, lectures, and presentations that serve communities across the state. Her plans for the laureateship will focus on connecting with Kansans through the shared experience of language, Kansas' agricultural roots, and food. “I am delighted to serve Kansas as the next Poet Laureate,” Professor Traci Brimhall said. “I love connecting with others and building community, and I can't wait for the next few years of celebrating creativity in the Sunflower State.” As the Poet Laureate of Kansas, Traci promotes arts as a public resource to all Kansans. Currently, Traci offers two prepared talks as laureate: WHY CAN'T THE HEART STOP ASKING? Poetry is an art of attention. But sometimes the more attention we pay to the world, the more astonishing and confusing it can be. The medical researcher Jonas Salk said: “What people think of as the moment of discovery is really the discovery of the question.” I believe this also holds true for poetry. What images do we see each day that excite our minds? What sounds do we hear that awaken our hearts? What poems ask for our attention and reward us with discovery? This presentation will use poetry to create surprises, explore our curiosities, and find new questions. MEMORY FEAST In so many communities there is an appetite to find language for our experiences and connect with others. Joyce Carol Oates said: “If food is poetry, is not poetry also food?” I believe cuisine can be a link to open a memory, a great way to connect with those we love, and a source of inspiration for poetry. This presentation will use poetry to connect us both with our senses in daily activities as well as help us recall memories that remind us of family, culture and community. Poetry can be a place of nourishment, a bounty of the sensory, a feast of words. The above programs are designed for a roughly 60-minute time frame but can be adjusted if necessary. Traci may be able to accommodate other program or appearance requests, but priority will be given for the listed programs. Jon welcomes David Drazil, an architect, author, and creator of 'Sketch like an Architect.' They discuss how technology has overshadowed and nearly replaced the craft of architectural sketching in schools, leading to a decline in this essential skill among young professionals. David shares insights from his journey and mission to revive this art form, drawing on his experiences in Denmark and his global platform, which has helped thousands master architectural sketching. He highlights the cognitive benefits of sketching, from aiding in problem-solving and brainstorming to enhancing client interactions. They also discuss the advantages of using both traditional and digital sketching methods, and share success stories from students and professionals who have benefited from David's teachings. The episode underscores sketching as a universal, learnable language that enriches both the creative process and business communication in architecture.—Today's GuestDavid Drazil is an architect, author, and creator of Sketch Like An Architect, a global platform helping architects and designers build confident drawing skills through a clear step-by-step method. Originally from the Czech Republic, David studied architecture in Denmark, where he noticed a big gap: sketching was expected, but rarely taught. That insight sparked a mission that's grown into a worldwide movement — with over 300,000 followers, 15,000 students in his online courses, and three popular books. Today, David empowers creatives to communicate their ideas visually with clarity and confidence.—Episode Highlights00:00 Introduction00:45 Meet David Drazil: Architect and Sketching Advocate01:45 David's Personal Interests and Background03:56 The Importance of Sketching in Modern Architecture06:59 Personal Benefits and Practical Applications of Sketching13:26 Sketching as a Differentiator in Client Interactions23:11 Success Stories and Testimonials27:37 Final Thoughts on Sketching and Technology30:54 David's Favourite Places and Conclusion—Key TakeawaysSketching is a Timeless Skill That Sets You ApartYou learn that, even in an age dominated by digital tools and AI, the ability to sketch by hand remains a powerful differentiator. Sketching helps you communicate ideas quickly, build trust with clients, and stand out in interviews or meetings. It's not about being perfect—it's about being able to think and express visually in the moment.Anyone Can Learn to Sketch - It's Not About TalentYou discover that sketching isn't a gift reserved for the naturally talented. It's a learnable skill that you can develop with practice. By embracing sketching, you open up new ways to brainstorm, solve problems, and engage with others, regardless of your starting point.Sketching Fosters Human Connection and CollaborationYou realise that sketching is more than just a technical skill; it's a tool for collaboration and dialogue. 291: 3 Ways to go from Hobbyist to Interior Design Professional Welcome to the show! Today we're diving into how to go from hobbyist to professional—whether you're in interior design or building any creative business. We'll cover three powerful areas that can transform your journey: mindset, boundaries, and intentionality. So, grab a pen and paper, and let's reflect—where are you still showing up like a hobbyist, and where are you ready to level up and own your role as a professional? Topics Mentioned: Mindset Boundaries Intentionality Sustainability Key Thoughts: When we have the mindset of a professional, we're certainly going to create a boundary to make sure that we're making a profit or we're not going to engage in the work. Michele Williams Being intentional about what we do, having these mindsets that we talked about of a very professional mindset, creating good boundaries, all of those things start to move us into that proactive stance instead of a reactive stance. Michele Williams Having a very intentional, clear focus of what you're doing really creates grounding, it creates trust, it creates an environment where people can get behind it and kind of push that boulder uphill with you because they all know that they're pushing in the same direction. Michele Williams Sustainability shows up because we have sustainable processes, we have sustainable team dynamics, and we have sustainable profitability. When advice goes wrong...My daughter is an avid soccer player. On a recent cold and dark Saturday morning, I was standing on the sideline cheering her on at a match - the priceless perks of being a dad.At some point, the opposing team coach was shouting to their players, "You need to defend better!" And all I could think to myself at that moment was, "That's terrible advice." Not because they were defending well - rather the opposite. But, I mean, "defend better" - would you know what you're supposed to do? Should I press higher, get closer to the attacker, make more forward runs? This type of advice often just leads to more confusion and coordination problems. Now, in design, we also get this type of well-intended but counter-productive advice all too often.Want a classic example? How about "designers need to understand business"? No sh*t Sherlock. We hear this ALL the time.Very rarely does someone go beyond the surface and get specific about what "understanding business" actually means.Fortunately for us, we have someone on the Show today who does - Ryan Scott. Ryan has an impressive track record in design, but he also holds an MBA degree. This combination is quite unique and gives him the ability to look at challenges from different perspectives with empathy for both sides. So in this episode, we unpack what it actually takes to bridge the gap between business and design. You'll be surprised to hear how many skills you already have to make this crossover successfully. It's not easy, but it's not as hard or distant as you might think, either. MBA degree not required. So, if you've ever felt frustrated by the lack of respect and appreciation for design from "the business side," this conversation might just hold the clue on how you can turn that around.I've always said that designers can be some of the best salespeople. It's really time that we start using this power to our advantage. Because we are all selling already, every single day.Enjoy and keep making a positive impact!~ Marc--- [ 1. We haven't touched on how to hire an architect or residential designer in quite a while, so here is another look at episode 68 with Jake Krowkoski. In this episode, you will discover…….- How do I know if I need an architect?- Where can I find architects online?- How can I tell which architect will be a good fit for me?- What should I bring to my interview with my architect?About our guestJake Krokowski is a Landscape Architect and Residential Designer based in Greenville SC, and founded JWK DESIGN in 2015 “to help families create their comfortable, modern homes”. He received his Bachelors degree in Landscape Architecture at Cornell University in 1999, followed by a Masters in Construction Management in 2003.Jake started his career in high-end residential work in the New York City area, but also spent years in resort planning & design, working in both San Diego and New York, on projects from Southern California and Baja Mexico to the Mediterranean and Middle East. He then put his construction knowledge to use in rebuilding the World Trade Center and surrounding streetscapes following the 2001 attacks, a project he says he's the most proud to have been involved in.But, following a move to Greenville with his wife Kate in 2012, a sometimes grueling schedule as a traveling construction manager for a hotel developer, coupled with the pending arrival of his first son pushed him to return back to residential design and start his firm in 2015, a move that he says “felt like coming home”. How do we continue to strive for doing the right work and making brave decisions? If you are an org design practitioner, please tell us your thoughts. Are you the bad guys (or gal)?

Many times we think we need to move to an English speaking country to improve our English. After my own experience of studying languages, studying linguistics and my own experience of teaching my students and watching many other friends and clients, I've seen again and again that you do not need to live in the local country to develop your speaking skills. In today's episode I share how you can develop your English speaking skills without living abroad or having many opportunities to speak. I also share some of the biggest mistakes that I have made living abroad and what I have learned teaching clients from all over the world who believed that they needed to move abroad to develop their fluency, and what happens when you are taken out of an English speaking environment. Times to check out: (01:57) This is what happens when I stop trying (06:16) Language learner's number one enemy (8:55) Why comprehension is not enough as a Design Professional (11:00) I could have had a very different experience (15:27) The harsh truth (18:17) What happens when you move back home (21:00) Create the opportunity If you would like more support with communicating your ideas and you'd like to build your confidence in speaking as a non-native English speaker and get support from me, then get your name on The Fluent Club waiting list. It is the last chance to join in 2022 so if you have been considering it, NOW is the time. It won't be opening again until 2023 and the price will be increasing. Don't let not living in an English speaking country or not working for an English speaking company or not having many opportunities to speak or not having English speaking friends be the reason that stops you from making progress. It's not a secret... Every day we are outsourcing more and more of our decisions to AI algorithms. Some of these decisions are frivolous, like determining if that's a cat in the photo. Other decisions are of much higher stake, like whether you will get that medical treatment. Especially with the last kind of decisions, we'd better ensure that these algorithms are designed and used responsibly. And according to Jillian Powers, service design professionals must play a vital role in this process. This means we need to get familiar and comfortable with this new technology. But how? Well, in this episode, Jillian gives a "data science 101" for designers. I assure you that there won't be any complex computer math that you need to understand. On the contrary, you'll hear that bringing the human perspective into the conversation is the thing that's currently missing. This is one of those episodes that shines a light on a blind spot that you didn't even realize you had. So grab your notebook and click the link below! I feel Jillian does a great job at demystifying AI to the point that it might even get you excited to get involved :) Enjoy the conversation and keep making a positive impact! --- [ 1. In this episode, Justin Smith, Principal with Start 2 Rise in Tampa, FL, sits down with us to discuss how he and his colleagues help AEC Design Firm leaders “build stronger Project Management playbooks to focus on growing their people and their business.” Justin has teamed up with Zweig Group to offer a groundbreaking Project Management training program to help PMs be more effective and efficient. The best part about the PM Training that Justin has created is that it was designed and delivered by actual AEC Professionals. Justin worked for more than a decade as a Structural Engineer, and he knows the project management challenges that firms face all too well. The PM Training focuses on four key areas: Time Management Communication - Ability to Understand and Be Understood Leadership Problem Solving & Conflict Resolution The question that Justin focuses on with AEC Leaders dealing with project management challenges is, “where are you now, and where do you want to go?” According to Justin, for us to have a successful outcome with PM Training, we have to be honest with ourselves and acknowledge our shortcomings so that they can be repaired, built up, and fortified. There has never been a better time to professionally and personally develop your team. Starting with a foundational approach to project management will help you chart a path to project success for your firm and your clients. Justin shares so many nuggets of wisdom in this episode. You will have plenty of notes and inspiration to move forward with.
