The rapper Drakeo the Ruler was stabbed to death Saturday night while standing backstage just before a scheduled performance at the Once Upon a Time in L.A. music festival in Exposition Park, according to multiple reports. He was 28 years old. Drakeo (né Darrell Caldwell) was stabbed in the neck during an altercation that happened backstage around 8:30 p.m. PT, according to The Los Angeles Times. He was transported to a local hospital where he died of his injuries, a rep for the rapper told Rolling Stone. Reps for the LAPD and Drakeo the Ruler did not immediately respond to TheWrap's request for comment. LAPD and the California Highway Patrol are leading the investigation. The festival was promptly shut down after the stabbing, canceling slated performances from headliners like Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent. “There was an altercation in the roadway backstage,” organizers of the event said in a statement. “Out of respect for those involved and in coordination with local authorities, artists and organizers decided not to move forward with remaining sets so the festival was ended an hour early.” Fellow rapper Drake posted a tribute to Drakeo the Ruler on his Instagram story, writing “Nah man this s— isn't right for real wtf are we doing. Always picked my spirit up with your energy. RIP Drakeo.” The two collaborated earlier this year on the song “Talk to Me.” Drakeo the Ruler was known for his distinct deadpan style, and rose to fame in 2015 with the release of his first mixtape “I Am Mr. Mosely.” After serving time as part of a plea deal, he was released from custody in November 2020. While in prison, Drakeo the Ruler recorded his album “Thank You for Using GTL.” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/masseffect/support
In this Sunday edition: On Monday night, the Pomona City Council voted to resume using local police in its schools. It's a reversal from just a few months ago when the school board decided to stop paying for school police. Criminal Justice reporter Emily Elena Dugdale talked about it this week with KPCC's Nick Roman. Then, as redistricting wraps up in the City of Los Angeles – there are still some parts of the draft map that are causing tension. Like which council district - or districts - should have South L.A.'s big landmarks, like USC and Exposition Park? Our community engagement reporter Carla Javier looked into it. In 2020, LISC-LA created the South LA Economic Inclusion Implementation Plan, a 3-year implementation plan that supports an integrated, place-based approach to advancing economic mobility for communities in South LA. The plan recommendations seek to connect South LA residents and businesses across three distinct districts in South LA: the Crenshaw Corridor, Exposition Park, and the Goodyear Tract to the regional economy and foster connection across local organizations to create ladders of economic opportunity for South LA residents. The recommendations outlined in the South LA Economic Inclusion Implementation Plan seek to grow South LA’s strengths, combat the root of institutional oppression, and connect local organizations to bring more accessible economic opportunity for all South LA residents. In this episode, Tunua sits down with three of our South LA Implementation partners and HUD S4 grantees to discuss what can be done for advancing economic mobility for communities in South LA. Cast your mind back to 2008 – a year largely remembered for the global economic crisis that caused panic and uncertainty. With the economy in tatters, it probably didn't seem like the best time to strike out and start a new business. But that's exactly what Jaime Nack – this week's guest – did. Not only that, but her fledgling consultancy, Three Squares Inc, specialised in something called ‘sustainability' – a concept that was not even close to going mainstream yet.The year 2008 was also a year of hope. The US elected its first-ever African American president in November. And as Barack Obama was being nominated by his political party a few months beforehand, during August's Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado, Nack was getting her business off the ground by ‘greening' the major political event.Nack has been the sustainability director for every subsequent convention and has seen Three Squares Inc go from strength to strength, working with brands, events and venues such as Honda, the Los Angeles Marathon and Exposition Park – a venue earmarked for the LA 2028 Summer Olympic Games.During this episode, she discusses her journey and reveals why strategy and conviction are crucial to achieving bold sustainability objectives. Nack explains:Why she makes it a priority to work across a number of industries – including sport – to increase her positive impactHow and why it's important for organisations to give employees responsibility and autonomy when it comes to sustainabilityHow to turn a strong sustainability strategy into a positive legacy
