This week on America's Podcast, we've rolled out the red carpet for our guest, Eric Lussier from the French Connection. We'll be dissecting the latest sonic offering from Florence Black, the "Bed of Nails" album. Does it rock harder than your Aunt Linda's attempts at karaoke, or does it have you contemplating life decisions while gazing into the void? Well, you'll have to tune in for the juicy details because, as always, no spoilers here! In our Tracks of the Week segment, get ready for a rockin' rollercoaster! Marc kicks things off with “Hoodoo Voodoo Medicine Man” by Aerosmith—because what's a little hoodooing between friends? Eric then throws down the gauntlet with “I Do It My Way” by Kissin' Dynamite, which is also a great motto for almost all family gatherings. Finally, we wrap things up with Jerry's choice, “Trapped Under Ice” by Metallica. Man, we hope nobody is actually in a fridge while listening! So until next week, please share our podcast and leave us a five-star review—otherwise, let's be honest, you might just suck! But hey, no pressure…just kidding! We love you all!
This week's HardLore features special guest and co-founder of the greatest hardcore band in modern history: Sam Trapkin of Trapped Under Ice. Onwards to 1984 we go where we find the more extreme branches of the metal tree flexing their muscles. However, a few hard rock, punk and trad metal outfits also made us break out in a sweat that year. 1984 ... a great year for every type of headbanging man!!! Side 1 (0:00) "Nocturnal Fear": CELTIC FROST - Morbid Tales (3:36) "Hail To England": MANOWAR - Hail To England (7:59) "Trapped Under Ice": METALLICA - Ride The Lightning (12:01) "Jawbreaker": JUDAS PRIEST - Defenders of the Faith (15:27) "In Conspiracy With Satan": BATHORY - Bathory (17:53) "Meanstreak": DEEP PURPLE - Perfect Strangers Side 2 (22:09) "Saxons of the Fire": EXCITER - Violence and Force (25:34) "Wart Hog": RAMONES - Too Tough To Die (27:28) "Haunting The Chapel": SLAYER - Haunting The Chapel (31:23) "Headbanging Man": GRAVE DIGGER - Heavy Metal Breakdown (34:59) "Victim In Pain": AGNOSTIC FRONT - Victim in Pain (35:46) "Metal Thrashing Mad": ANTHRAX - Fistfull Of Metal (38:25) "Can U Deliver": ARMORED SAINT - March of the Saint
With the exception of a few notable anomalies in metal history, a band's second (i.e., follow-up) album is almost always more ambitious (and usually a ginormous quantum leap forward) than their debut album in nearly every way imaginable. And because we can't help but “poke the bear” every now and again, we thought “Why not pick two of the most incredibly important follow-up albums in thrash metal history to duke it out in the coliseum?” From 1984, it's METALLICA with RIDE THE LIGHTNING. From 1986, it's MEGADETH with PEACE SELLS…BUT WHO'S BUYING? And just to complexicate this confusing conundrum even further: only one of the members of one of these bands has actually been in BOLTH bands AND has songwriting credits on BOLTH albums. (“To be fair”, ‘tis certainly a vexing quandary to say the least.) Get ready to “work out your traps and use your sports words” because with these two beasts in the ring doing battle, it's bound to get intense. Time to “sacrifice some fruit loops” as things get “downright biblical” in the world of classic metal as we pit two of the finest sophomore albums in thrash metal history by two of the finest bands in thrash metal history (who actually share thrash metal history together) against each other! Prepare to discover the most sensually appealing culinary wonder ever documented in the annals of breakfast food debauchery and JOIN US as we go head-to-head, Death Match style, with METALLICA's 1984 release RIDE THE LIGHTNING vs MEGADETH'S 1986 release PEACE SELLS…BUT WHO'S BUYING? Colin and Bo went to Baltimore for Flatspot Records' "Disturbin' The Peace" Fest, which featured the triumphant "return" of the modern classic hardcore band Trapped Under Ice. A weekend full of twists and turns, they share their point of view of the 48 hours they spent in Baltimore and detail some truly HARD lore that occurred both days. Follow Hardlore: @hardlorepod. @colinyovng. @bosxe.
We've got Justice Tripp on the pod to talk all things Angel Du$t, Trapped Under Ice, and recent solo endeavors. After being mesmerized by footage of their Sound and Fury set, I know I need to pick Justice's brain on all things rock n' roll. With deep roots in the Baltimore scene, Justice continues to thrive off the community feel of the hardcore scene while continuously creating in an array of musical projects, including work on his label Pop Wig
One of the most exciting voices in hardcore right now, Ian Shelton, joins us for a chat about Militarie Gun's recently-released 'All Roads Lead to the Gun' and their upcoming, as-yet-unannounced new album, signing to multi-genre label Loma Vista, learning to love The Baetles and Nirvana after growing up as a punk kid who was taught to hate mainstream music, and why this current moment for hardcore is so interesting and rewarding. Ian talked about feeling a kinship with likeminded artists and friends such as Justice Tripp (Angel Du$t, Trapped Under Ice), Pat Flynn (Fiddlehead, Have Heart), and Patrick Kindlon (Drug Church, Self Defense Family), all of whom share Ian's undying love for hardcore, music in general, finding exciting new bands, pushing the envelope, and bringing influence from outside of hardcore into the genre. Ian also talked about Turnstile's success, and why this moment in hardcore is actually a time in which success is being celebrated and bands who truly deserve it are winning. Theme music by Michael Silverstein.
TRAPPED UNDER ICE are arguably the most influential hardcore band of the 2000's and definitely the most impactful band to come out of the Baltimore hardcore scene. Today, we're talking about Baltimore's Trapped Under Ice, the most important Hardcore band of the 21st Century this side of Terror. But first, current events! The Vein, Candy, Regulate, and Living Weapon tour. A Place For Owls. The Arrival Note. Excide. Callous Daoboys world takeover and Mike Patton comps. Camping In Alaska. The road return of Parasitic Twins. Who Decides. The Syracuse Hardcore Revival? Spite House. The Berries. Homework for the Hardlore Disharmony/Rust deep dive. TUI moved mountains in Hardcore, all but single-handedly shifting the vibe of the culture and genre. Then, in the wake of that, their members went on to shift the culture again via new projects. At the end of the day, TUI and their members are pretty impossible to disentangle from Hardcore as it currently stands, and their entire discography (even and maybe especially Heatwave) should be regarded for contributing massively to the genre in a way that is impossible to erase. Fun times.
Colin and Bo finally sit down with the living legend Justice Tripp from Trapped Under Ice and Angel Du$t. The highly influential frontman has a lot to say about modern HC, TUI's biggest moments, and transitioning from dangerous pits to beautiful hooks.
In this installment, Brandon and I continue our discussion, going over the songs For Whom The Bell Tolls, Fade To Black, Trapped Under Ice and Escape. RIDE THE LIGHTNING é o segundo álbum de estúdio do METALLICA. As músicas são: "Fight Fire With Fire", "Ride the Lightning", "For Whom the Bell Tolls", "Fade to Black", "Trapped Under Ice", "Escape", "Creeping Death" e "The Call of Ktulu". Any metalhead who hears the phrase “80’s era Metallica” will IMMEDIATELY conjure visions of James, Lars, Kirk and Cliff (R.I.P.) and be transported back to the days of yore, back before Metallica was a household name, back before they were part of The Big Four of Thrash Metal Royalty, back before Master of Puppets was even a “thought”. Back to 1984 and the badassness of Ride The Lightning.Ride The Lightning, Metallica’s 2nd album is, without a doubt, one of THE most glorious sophomore SLAMS (not slumps) in Metal history (like right up there with Paranoid and Vulgar Display of Power). Given that it’s recently celebrated its 36th anniversary, we here at Metal Nerdery HQ felt that it was time to DIVE in a bit further to this thrashsterpiece and give it the Metal Nerdery Treatment. So prepare your favorite relaxer and JOIN US as we go back to the Days of Yore (let’s call it Pre-Puppets-Thrash-Core) and discuss some of the trivia associated with the album, go through some of the tracks, and address how hilarious “misheard lyrics” can be. Then we finish the year strong with all the things people got stuck in their asses during the year, and a doctor spunks on a dudes leg during a routine exam. Music: Metallica/"Trapped Under Ice"
