And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Emergency Safety At the time of this podcast - a record-breaking hurricane is getting ready to hit Florida's West Coast.  In the case of a hurricane - you get the advanced warning that potentially hazardous weather is approaching.  But many other emergencies don't give you that option. So how do you prepare for such an event?  By planning for it BEFORE it occurs. Part of The 5S Methodology is the constant and never-ending improvement of all operations within your facility.  By doing a preemptive strike on potential events - you'll be as prepared as possible should emergencies occur. Ensure your safety team walks your facility actively looking for ways to improve emergency preparedness and overall safety. Make sure all Exit Signs are lit and in plain view. Test Emergency Lighting regularly. Post Emergency Plans in several locations within your facility. Ensure all First Aid Kits, Eye Wash Stations, Chemical Showers, Fire Extinguishers, and AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) Units are in working order. Ensure you train and test your staff on what to do in an emergency. There are likely many other Emergency Safety Tips to share - but the above list will get you on the road to being prepared. We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips. Until then, have a great week and STAY SAFE! Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! PPE Safety As we come to what appears to be the end of the Covid Pandemic - public mask requirements have all but gone away.  However - in facilities where masks are part of PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) Safety Procedures, the need to wear them is still very much needed. And it may not be your facility making the decision.  OSHA (The Occupational Safety and Health Administration) Guidelines may require that your facility wear certain PPE. In addition to masks and respirators you wear to protect your breathing - don't forget these other important items to complete your PPE Safety. Safety Glasses to protect your sight.Ear Plugs and Ear Muffs to protect your hearing. Hard Hats to protect your head. Gloves to protect your hands. Steel Toed Boots to protect your feet. Braces to protect your back. Harnesses to protect you from falls. More PPE Safety Items may be required at your facility, but this list should get you well on your way. We've said this before, but it bears repeating.  Remember - your health and safety are your bosses regarding PPE Safety.  You're only fooling yourself if you think you're getting away with something by not wearing it.  It only takes a moment of not wearing PPE to introduce issues, injuries, and death in the worst-case scenarios.  Don't roll the dice when it comes to your health and safety. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Safety Culture Have you ever heard the term 'Culture'? As it pertains to your facility - it's the behaviors and procedures observed regularly (Or the 'norm').   The late Tony Hsieh - Founder of the shoe company Zappos - knew culture inside and out.  So much so - Zappos would publish an annual Culture Book and make it available to the public.  Tony and the Zappos Management would give a bonus to people that didn't like their job (And/or do it within their culture) to leave.  In addition - they'd help that person find a new job that did suit them.  Imagine striving for that sort of culture in your workplace! How do you look at Safety?  Do you view it as something you must do when management is looking - or as a culture?  Hopefully, it's the latter! When you view safety as a culture, you take pride in it, seek to improve it, and know your facility doesn't operate correctly without it. An engaged Safety Culture will improve quality, productivity, profits, and make your staff safer.  What more can you ask for? And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Full-Time Safety How safe and pleasing is it to have a full tank of gas?  You KNOW there's no way you will run out anytime soon. Same thing with a full-time job.  It gives you comfort in knowing you're earning at full capacity. Most things are just better when done at one hundred percent. And when it comes to safety - this couldn't be more true.  Regardless of why you'd do it - it's never OK to operate at anything less than one hundred percent.  Those moments when you remove your safety glasses because they're foggy, take off your hard hat because it's hot, or remove your harness because it's uncomfortable - is when disaster has the potential to strike.  And if you listen to people that have been lucky enough to recall an accident - they almost always have the same story.  "I've done that (whatever it was that assisted the accident) a hundred times before - and nothing happened."   Attribute safety to that of a relationship you have.  If you don't think there's a correlation - tell your significant other that you're ninety-nine percent faithful to them, and you'll see just how important one percent can be!  We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Avoiding Slips And Falls Have you ever heard the Chinese Proverb, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”? It means that if you want success and growth in the future, the best time to act is now. So how does it apply to safety and our message for today? Although we're not even done with Summer yet (In the United States), Fall and Winter are right around the corner.  And with those seasons come wet leaves, ice, snow, and all sorts of slick elements not usually present. Add the usual spills and leaks from machines/vehicles in the workplace to the mix - and you have all sorts of potentially hazardous conditions. Slips and falls account for hundreds of fatalities, THOUSANDS of missed days, and OSHA Violations. As with most unsafe situations in the workplace – most of these situations could have been avoided. Here are just a few ways you can help prevent slips from happening - and get ahead of potential situations. - Encourage staff to wipe off and stamp their feet before entering your facility during rainy or snowy days. - Make sure you have anti-slip tape, gritty surfaces, and mats in problem areas. - Repair machines/vehicles that leak.  And if you can't stop leaks - contain them with proper spill containment products. - Encourage staff to alert maintenance as soon as a wet area is discovered. - Regularly mop wet areas and put out signs/cones indicating the situation. - Make sure staff wears slip-resistant footwear wherever applicable. These are just a few tips to make you aware - but if followed, should be a great start toward avoiding slips and falls at your facility. We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips. Until then, have a great week and STAY SAFE! Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors. Is there someone or a team at your facility that does Safety Walkthroughs? The definition above covers "possible problems," but a Safety Walkthrough should also look for things that are being done right and ways to improve things.   If you've implemented and are engaged in a 5S Methodology at your facility, you're already doing this.  If you aren't - then start A.S.A.P.! But it's not just about the proper use of the forks.  It goes much deeper than that.  But since we always try to keep things short and high-level - here are a few things to consider when it comes to Forklift Training and Safety. Before even getting on a forklift - be sure you've been trained, or OSHA Certified to do so. Perform a check at the beginning of each shift to assure the forklifts you're operating are in good working order with an inspection and general maintenance check. Know ALL the rules and regulations of your facility. Be aware of the load carrying, lifting, and storage rules. Wear and utilize all the safety equipment determined by your facility. Know your surroundings at all times - such as walls, poles, doorways, pipes, racks, other forklifts, and people. Obey Speed Limits. Watch for changing floor conditions due to spills or weather. Make Way For Safety On today's podcast - we're going to talk about ensuring your areas are optimized for safety. So stay tuned. You can find the show notes to each episode, links to the information mentioned on the podcast, the social media platforms we're on, and anything else related to the podcast at WarehouseSafetyTips.com. If you're a seasoned Podcast Listener, this podcast will be different from most you listen to.  It's based around exactly what the name implies - Warehouse Safety Tips.  And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money, so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Make Way For Safety Inspiration for our podcast today comes from outside of work.  We needed to have some rugs cleaned - and decided to move everything out of the rooms being steamed (As opposed to cleaning around larger items).  You don't realize how much stuff you have in a room until you see it empty.  In addition - you start to question what needs to make its way back in and how you will arrange it.   While waiting for the carpets to be done - I listened to talk radio.  They were going over what millennials are requesting as new benefits - and how things have to change to meet those requests. These two things made me wonder how often changes are made in your facility to ensure optimized safety, efficiency, and productivity. If you follow the 5S Methodology - you know that constant and never-ending improvement is a major factor in the success of a facility.  But unfortunately, "That's the way we've always done it." comes into play far too often.   We know you can't move most machinery and general layouts - but you CAN focus on the best situations possible in every area. So focus on the things you can change - and adopt moving forward into the future over remaining in the ideas of the past. We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips. Until then, have a great week and STAY SAFE! Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors. If you've ever been to or worked in a warehouse - you know just how important safety is to management and staff.  It's almost impossible to go 10 steps without seeing Safety Tape, Angles, Signs, and/or products. These items show us how to be safe and avoid danger in the workplace.  And if you're looking for the best products to make this happen - look no further than Mighty Line! And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Safety Announcements Safety at your facility is of the utmost importance!  Whether via staff, maintenance, safety coordinators, management, or a combination of them all - you strive to make safety number one. But there's a vital ingredient to the recipe.  You need safety announcements to make everyone at your facility aware of the safety measures that have been put in place.  Without doing so - it can be as if you've done nothing. So how do you accomplish this? This is just a sampling of things you can do - but it should be a great way to start. Before each shift - make safety updates part of your briefings.   Post all safety information in highly visible locations around your facility, such as breakrooms and other areas where info is displayed. Have Safety Meetings regularly to discuss current safety measures and how things can be improved upon.  And make sure this information is shared outside of the meetings in the places mentioned within this list. Last - but certainly not least - encourage staff to listen to, watch, or read content similar to this podcast. That's the reason we do this podcast.  We want to give you bite-sized high-level looks at safety - so it's always top of mind.  If we're just a percentage of why you and your staff go home safe at the end of your work day - then we've done our job! One of the ways we do this is by ensuring paths and procedures are properly marked.  And even though you can usually find most safety signs and floor tape with the required message, sometimes it just doesn't meet your needs.  That's where custom safety signs and floor and tape come in.   Your text. Hoffmann.  One of the many things we discussed was how safety applies to your ENTIRE facility.  Blaine and I would tell you that you need to be aware of safety in ALL aspects of your life - at home and work.  But in what we were discussing, it had to do with marking and identifying pipes and wires outside facilities.   In a nutshell - we were talking about how important it is to know everything about your facility to remain safe.  And how important it is to relay that information to staff and non-staff working inside and outside of your location. We live and work in very busy times - so it's of the utmost importance that we always keep our heads on a swivel and constantly look for ways to stay safe.  Doing this and sharing what we find with others will keep our surroundings as safe as possible. Ladder Safety If you've spent any time at all online or have ever watched a Blooper Show - you've seen people falling off of ladders.  When you add funny music or a laugh track to the videos they can seem pretty funny - but, it's no laughing matter.   Of the falls that occur every year - a large percentage of them include a ladder. As with all tips we provide on this podcast - this is a high-level look at things you can do to increase Ladder Safety.  Always check with your facility to ensure you're following all the required Safety Rules. But for now - here are a few good tips to get you started. Make sure you're using the correct ladder for what it is you're doing. Make sure the ladder is in good working shape.  If it's not - don't use it. Assure the ladder is on level ground, anchored or being held, and is at the safest angle for climbing. If you're in an area with activity - be sure to mark off the area to ensure nobody hits or walks under the ladder. Climb up and down the ladder in a safe manner. This information is absolutely vital for the safety of staff and keeping your "Days Since An Accident" Board in the high digits - but, it's also great advice outside of the workplace. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Double And Triple-Checking Safety As mentioned on last week's podcast - our village is having Fiber Optic Cable buried, and has cut wires all over the place while doing it.  I know this personally - because they cut our Internet Cable while working in our yard. Right after posting that podcast - I was on The Safety Pro Podcast with Blaine J. Hoffmann.  One of the things we discussed was Call811.com.  That's the "Know What's Below.  Call Before You Dig" Hotline.  That service only covers Public Utilities - NOT Private Utilities or things you've put underground such as an Electric Fence for your pets or Irrigation Pipes.  People digging are still SUPPOSED to ask you about items such as this before digging. In addition - what if a pipe or line was missed by those called to mark them?  A cut Internet Cable is an inconvenience.  A cut gas or electric line could result in death. When it comes to safety - you can't assume!  You have to double and triple-check it to assure you're keeping yourself and those around you safe. It might take some extra time - but doing so might mean the difference between having the time to double and triple-check or rolling the dice.  When you choose safety - the house almost always WINS! Confused About Markings? 10 Common Harp Markings Explained! - PHH 059

Practicing Harp Happiness

If the fairy godmother of harp appeared today to grant you just one wish, what would it be? Would you wish for a new harp, flying fingers, an endless supply of music? I know what I would wish for: standardized harp markings. That may sound to you as if I haven't given this wish a lot of thought, but actually I believe if the harp fairy godmother would grant that one wish, it would save all of us harpists much time, confusion and frustration. Allow me to explain. Harp notation is anything but standardized. Take a simple technique like a harmonic. Most composers write harp harmonics where they are to be played, which results in the note sounding one octave higher. But there are a few composers - Carlos Salzedo, most notably - who write their harmonics where the notes actually sound, meaning that we need to play them one octave lower than they are written. Many harpist composers explain which system they are using with a note to the performer printed on the music. Unfortunately, the vast majority of works for harp leave this important piece of information unwritten for the players to figure out for themselves.  And that's merely one example. Harp markings seem to change with each new generation of composers and arrangers. Harpists must become detectives, scouring the page for clues to decide what a marking means and learning what to do when you can't find any clues.  Other markings are just plain confusing. Take harp fingering from some of the 19th harpist composers. Rather than use the number 1 to indicate the thumb, some composers used a plus sign or an “x” to indicate the thumb. To add another layer of confusion, the fingers 2, 3 and 4 were indicated as 1, 2 and 3. It's easier to read these pieces without the fingering at all than to try to translate the fingering as you play. Sadly, I can't clear up all the harp marking inconsistencies for you in one podcast. What we will talk about on today's show are the meanings of 10 fairly common markings. I will tell you what they mean or in some cases what they don't  mean and most importantly, when you need to use your own judgment. Also, at the end of our discussion, I will share a wonderful free online resource with you that will help you with many more harp marking questions.  One word of warning: there's one three-word phrase that crops up repeatedly in today's discussion. I won't tell you what that phrase is now; you'll recognize it soon enough!  Links to things I think you might be interested in that were mentioned in the podcast episode:  Harp Notation Manual by Gunnhildur Einarsdóttir Related resource The Mysterious Case of the Extra Accidental blog post Harpmastery.com Get involved in the show! And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! When Safety Fails As mentioned on previous podcasts, and on future ones as well - we try to draw our content from real life.  Today is no exception.  As a matter of fact - it's going to launch a multiple-part series. Our village is having Fiber Optic Cable buried.  The village has marked properties with where they "think" cable is - but even fancy tools can miss a wire or two.  I work at home and Wednesdays are usually one of my busiest days.  Well, today is Wednesday - and today the guys burying Fiber Optic Cable hit our Internet Cable.  That made today start off a little frustrating.  But instead of getting mad, I contacted my clients to let them know of the issue and started thinking of ways to apply this to safety. Apply the above situation to your facility.  After assuring nobody has been injured and everything is under control - what can you do to best avoid a similar situation happening again?  While it's fresh in your mind - get your maintenance, safety team, staff that's been affected, and management together and discuss steps for the future.  Mistakes aren't fun to deal with - but they are the best teachers! You can find the show notes to each episode, links to the information mentioned on the podcast, the social media platforms we're on, and anything else related to the podcast at WarehouseSafetyTips.com. If you're a seasoned Podcast Listener - this podcast is going to be different from most you listen to.  It's based around exactly what the name implies - Warehouse Safety Tips.  And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Milestones A couple of the things we celebrate here on our podcast are consistency and milestones.    Last week we were able to celebrate BOTH and didn't even realize it.  The podcast "Coming Soon..." was our 130th episode.  That marked the 2.5-year point of doing our podcast.  But even better, it marked the 130th week in a row that we've done this podcast. We always try to draw similarities with non-work life to safety - and the above-mentioned consistency and milestone should provide it. If you have a "Days Since An Accident" sign at your facility with a high number - celebrate it!  It means you've been consistent in your safety efforts.  If you don't have one of the signs or one where the number on it isn't high - it gives you the opportunity to work on improving your safety and hitting milestones. Take a hard look at how you implement The 5S Methodology at your facility.  If you follow each "S" with the intention of getting better each time you cycle through it - the numbers on your Safety Board will keep climbing. We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips. Until then, have a great week and STAY SAFE! Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Coming Soon I was driving home yesterday and noticed a sign on one of the busiest streets in our village.  The sign said, "This Road Will Be Closed 6/27 For 60 Days". This is big news!  One - because it will be closed for two months or more.  And, two - because this is such a small village, it's one of two of the most trafficked roads.   I always attempt to find real-world examples to draw from for this podcast - and that sign prompted our message for today. Can you imagine turning the corner and seeing the road you expected to be in use torn apart?  I'm sure it's happened to you in the past.  I know it has for me.  And it never happens when I'm on time.  It's usually when I'm trying to get somewhere and suddenly, I'm blindsided by a Detour Sign. Don't blindside your staff! Whether it's updates, changes, or events - are you doing everything you can at your facility to prepare your staff in advance?  Doing so will allow staff to get the message, ask questions, have discussions, and be prepared for what's ahead BEFORE it happens. Ever wonder what you should be writing into your sheet music during rehearsal?  When I'm music directing a show, I have a very specific list of things I want singers to write down in their score.  These are stylistic choices that go beyond what's written on the page, and when everyone performs them as a unified ensemble, the music elevates to another level of nuance and professionalism. But, what exactly are these “things” I'm telling them to write down? Friend, let me tell you! Today, I'm sharing nine essential music markings you should be writing in your score during every rehearsal!  Some of these markings are basic and others involve higher level musical analysis.  But, ALL of them are integral to helping you: Learn a song with precision and accuracy Perform musical phrases with consistent interpretation choices Sing in tune with other singers Elevate your ensemble singing skills And improve how you communicate with your music director and accompanists If you want to learn your music faster and with greater detail and nuance, then this episode is for you.  Grab a pen and paper, and let's go! And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! What Does OSHA Do? On a previous podcast - we answered the question, "What do the letters "OSHA" stand for?" To provide a refresher - OSHA is an acronym, and it represents the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Today we're going to answer the question "What Does OSHA Do?" Taken directly from the official website - https://www.osha.gov/ - here's the answer.  With the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, Congress created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to ensure safe and healthful working conditions for workers by setting and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education, and assistance. Employers are required to adhere to the standards provided by OSHA and, in turn, provide a safe workplace free from serious hazards. Employers are responsible for training employees and performing tests, providing PPE, and medical tests as mandated by means, posting OSHA citations annually, and not retaliating or discriminating against an employee. Not adhering to OSHA Standards and Requirements can result in injuries, fines, and even death. Make sure your facilities are operating within and above the OSHA Standards and Requirements at all times. To take a much deeper dive into OSHA - visit OSHA.gov. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Everything In Its Place I've always been envious of garages and workshops with outlines or labels on the wall for every tool or piece of equipment.  This process allows you to save time looking for items - because they're always in the same place.  And you can immediately tell when something is missing.  This makes day-to-day operations easier - and will help with overall inventory. In a garage or workshop, you know if something is missing, if it wasn't you that was using it, then it had to be someone in your immediate circle.  At a facility - that circle is probably much larger.  So to streamline the process - you should either put one person in charge of checking items out or have some sort of camera monitoring. This process is the second step of The 5S Methodology - Straighten or Set In Order (Japanese Version - Seiton).  It's sometimes simplified as, "A place for everything and everything in its place." And it doesn't have to be limited to tools and equipment.  You can print identifying labels for everything at your facility - and cover them with Clear Heavy-Duty Label Protectors.  These labels can be on the floor, walls, and actual items.  And since they're heavy-duty - they're durable, adaptable, convenient, and efficient for warehouses, factories, and most facilities. Anything you can do to streamline production is a win - and this process does that. We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips. Until then, have a great week and STAY SAFE! Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors. First and foremost - make sure staff, maintenance, and management are all notified of the spill.  If the elements related to the spill are hazardous or present any sort of danger - clear or evacuate the area. Looking For Trouble On our podcast today - we're going to go against everything you were told growing up.   All your life - parents, teachers, and friends have been telling you, "Don't go looking for trouble!"  Sometimes they'd end it with, "If you do - you just might find it!"  Of course, they were referencing getting into trouble - such as fighting, drinking or doing drugs, or anything that might be illegal or dangerous. To stay ahead of issues in factories, warehouses, and anywhere safety practices are put into action - sometimes you NEED to go looking for trouble.  You WANT to find situations where something could potentially happen before it does. Whether you're following ISO, The 5S Methodology, Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or a combination of them all - eliminating waste, extra movements, and potential issues is paramount. We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips. Until then, have a great week and STAY SAFE! Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! What are the OSHA Color Codes? A few episodes ago, we discussed "What are the OSHA Color Codes?"  Once again, if you're not aware of what OSHA is - we covered this a few weeks ago in Episode 115 - " What Does OSHA Stand For?".  It's an acronym that represents the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. As a refresher - the colors we previously covered were yellow for caution, red for danger, blue for specific items, and orange for paying attention. Today we're going to cover two more of the OSHA Color Codes - green and purple. If you're a viewer of this podcast, you'll already know this - but we always like to remind you.  We keep things very short and to the point for time purposes.  We provide a general and high-level look at the topics at hand - but almost all of our topics can and should be looked into much deeper.  With that said, here are our next two OSHA Color Codes. Green is generally reserved for first aid and for items related to safety. Purple is one that you'll probably see the least.  It indicates the presence of radiation. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Have you ever read a book or watched a movie where a bunch of puzzle pieces come together and provide a big reveal?  Chances are you have.  Although I've spent a great deal of time in the tech world - in my younger days, I spent a lot of time in factories and warehouses.  Safety and the implementation of it were a huge part of my job.  In addition to safety - I learned about ISO, OSHA, Six Sigma, 5S Methodology, and Lean Manufacturing.  Then today - I found several pictures of my Mom holding money bouquets as prizes for winning Safety Slogan Contests.  In doing so I released I've been around safety a lot longer than I'd thought.  I remember sitting around the kitchen table as a kid and helping her create and pick what we thought would be good submissions.   This brought me to the question of this podcast, "Do you reward safety?" Most employees don't want to take their jobs home with them.  But, when there's an incentive - things change.   Are you doing things at your facility that make your staff feel involved with your safety program?  If so - great!  If not - why? One of my Mom's winning Safety Messages was, "Where Safety Reigns, There Will Be Gains".  That would be printed on huge banners and hung throughout the facility until it was replaced by the next year's winner.  But can you imagine the pride my Mom must have felt looking up and seeing her winning submission each day? And how true was that message?  "Where Safety Reigns, There Will Be Gains".  It's a mindset we as safety-minded professionals individuals should embrace! It doesn't have to be a contest, but find a way to involve and reward your staff for improved safety - and you're going to find there WILL be gains! We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips. Until then, have a great week and STAY SAFE! Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors. Six Sigma was put into action by Motorola Engineer Bill Smith in 1986.  Its purpose was to produce products with little to no defects.  This would be accomplished by identifying and removing as many of the manufacturing and business processes that could be responsible for errors and defects as possible. Unlike the 5S Methodology, we cover on this podcast - Six Sigma doesn't have 6 parts or steps.  Instead, the six of Six Sigma refers to the 6 standard deviations (Plus and Minus). The ranking of Six Sigma is similar to that of the colored belts in Martial Arts.  The progression starts with white and is followed by yellow, green, and black. Six Sigma not only improves quality - but, also offers culture and mindset for facilities to strive for.  When implemented effectively - it should also reduce cost and improve customer satisfaction. Keeping safety in mind.   We know Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest.  But if you're like a lot of people - at the very minimum, you probably plan for the week ahead. The start of every shift is like Sunday.  It's usually a time to stretch and catch up with your co-workers for a few - but, it's a good idea to run down what's going on in your facility as well.  Instead of planning for the week ahead - you're planning for the shift ahead.   We constantly cover how things can become "invisible" to us after being exposed for so long.  So being reminded of important safety issues now and again keeps safety front of mind. It probably consists of watching out for this or keeping an eye on that - but, those couple of minutes can help you avoid everything from a minor incident to someone being hurt or killed. So as you can imagine, it's absolutely important to make these Safety Briefings part of your pre-shift rituals. We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips. Before answering that, we should probably make sure you know what OSHA is.  We covered this a few weeks ago on Episode 115 - " What Does OSHA Stand For?".  If you missed it or don't know - it's an acronym that represents the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. We try to keep things simple and bite-sized on this podcast - and this one will be no different.  There are several colors among OSHA's Color Codes - but, we're only going to be covering the two that mirror life in and out of your facility.  Those colors are the two colors on a stoplight or most safety signs - yellow and red.  We picked those two because they're pretty universal in what they mean no matter where you go. When you see the color yellow - it means you should be cautious of your surroundings or preparing to stop.   The color red means stop, do not enter or indicates danger. In the workplace - these colors can sometimes fade into the background, and become almost invisible to us.  It's of the utmost importance that we go about every moment of our day looking for these two colors in particular, as they're the two that can impact us and our co-workers the most.  Not paying attention to them can result in anything from a harmless incident to death.   For more information on all of OSHA's Color Codes - visit OSHA.gov and search "Color Codes". Simply stated, it's a bar graph that allows project managers (As well as other staff members) to see a project from a specific start time to its projected finish.  Those utilizing it can manage workflows and improve upon them for the future. Created by Henry L. Gantt - the Gantt Chart allows a visual representation of a project.   Originally created to track the construction of ships - it's been used on everything from the Interstate Highway System to the construction of the Hoover Dam.   Tools like the Gantt Chart allow us to constantly work towards improved efficiency.  That's Lean Manufacturing.  We'll discuss that more in upcoming episodes. Yes, we usually share SAFETY Tips - but, keep this in mind.  One of the benefits of a safe facility is continued production.  If you're following the 5S Methodology - then you're focused on improvement.  In order to have improvement - you really need to seek out greater efficiency.  And that's where the Gantt Chart brings everything full circle.  You can monitor the progress of everything - including safety procedures within one or all projects - at a glance. What is PPE? On today's podcast - we're going to be answering the question "What is PPE?".  So stay tuned. You can find the show notes to each episode, links to the information mentioned on the podcast, the social media platforms we're on, and anything else related to the podcast at WarehouseSafetyTips.com. If you're a seasoned Podcast Listener - this podcast is going to be different from most you listen to.  It's based around exactly what the name implies - Warehouse Safety Tips.  And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money, so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! What is PPE? After being part of a global pandemic with Covid - it's highly unlikely that you're unaware of what PPE is.  But if you were unaware that wearing a mask and/or gloves is considered PPE - then the following will be for you. PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment. As with all topics we cover here on the podcast - this will be a very high-level look at PPE.  There are many other PPE options available besides the ones we'll cover here.  To keep things short and to the point - here are the primary ones you need to be aware of. Eyes | Glasses Ears | Ear Plugs and Ear Muffs Lungs | Masks and Respirators Head | Hard Hats Hands | Gloves Feet | Steel Toed Boots Back | Braces Body | Braces, Harnesses, and Protective Clothing The two most important PPE sources you need to follow are the OSHA Guidelines required at your facility - as well as the training and guidelines set forth by management. Remember - your health and safety is your boss when it comes to PPE.  If you think you're getting away with something by not wearing it - you're only fooling yourself.  It only takes a moment of not wearing PPE to introduce issues, injuries, and in the worst cases - death.  Don't roll the dice when it comes to your health and safety. We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips. Until then, have a great week and STAY SAFE! Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors.
