Rejoice humans! Miracles still do happen. My Instagram was hacked and for 8 days I was locked out of my own account. I was having a terrible week until I saw a woman at the grocery store in a sun dress reach for something on a lower shelf and the sight of her exposed breast cheered me up instantly. In this episode you will learn why the orange Rufus hummingbird is the most special, the power of positive thinking from Ted Williams and the artist's mindset and mission as set forth by Balzac. I will also tell you what Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars triggered in me. Plus you will learn which Beatle I would eat first and which Beatle I would eat last if I had to eat the Beatles in order to stay alive if we were in a plane crash together in the Andes. To cap off this epic blockbuster episode I will tell you about my new project about LA History that I have been working on and the cherry on the cake that it was for me to go film at The Urban Con at the LA Convention Center to talk to people about Low Rider culture in Los Angeles. After one delay and one cancellation, the LA Auto Show is back for the first time in two years. Like many businesses, the automotive industry has suffered. But its first major auto show since the Covid-19 pandemic began will be held Nov. 19-28 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The 2021 LA Auto Show will emphasize auto mobility but will feature its traditional large selection of vehicle debuts. David Fortin, Head of Consumer Marketing for the event, is our guest on Episode #205 of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia discuss with Fortin the pending show and the expected highlights. LA Auto Show: It's Back Founded in 1907, the LA Auto Show has built its reputation as one of the world's most prestigious auto shows. It hasn't been held since November 2019. As it did two years ago with further emphasis, the LA Auto Show will focus on the continued electrification of the automotive industry. The LA Auto Show always has its share of prototypes one-offs, including designer Jeremy Scott's Smart Car Concept. From startups to established brands, the 10-day show with packed days of test drives, never-before-seen vehicles, custom and exotic cars, all-new zero-emission vehicles, interactive activations and one-of-a-kind experiences. LA Auto: Plenty of Test Drives Influencers and shoppers can test-drive vehicles from brands such as Audi, Chrysler, Dodge, ElectraMeccanica, Fiat, Ford, Honda, Jeep, Nissan, Ram, Subaru and Toyota. Featured this year is the inaugural ZEVAS award program. It's the first people's choice award program of its kind that celebrates the top zero-emission vehicles available for sale or pre-order." The Byton all-electric sedan concept debuted at the 2018 LA Auto Show. "The ZEAVAS is probably one of the things we are there most proud of," said Fortin. "It was born within our company. Our owner and CEO, Lisa Kaz, really has always been connected to where vehicles are and where they are going. LA Auto Show: Future Is Now "As the EV mandate started to come into play even as a whisper and now as a true mandate she recognized that the LA Auto Show has always had a place in history, almost an obligation, to inform, educate and inspire people to ask 'what does mobility look like in the future?" Among the several additional attractions: • Camp Jeep (Outdoor): The long-standing manufacturer will present in a 25,000-square-foot indoor exhibit test course the opportunity for attendees to experience the off-road capabilities of Jeep vehicles. Product specialists, sometimes called Ambassadors, are an integral part of the LA Auto Show presentation of new vehicles. • EV Track Powered by Electrify America (Indoor): The largest open ultra-fast DC charging network—is the show's exclusive sponsor of the all-new indoor electric vehicle (EV) test track and charging provider for the automotive brands and vehicles featured in this year's outdoor test drives. Please join us as Fortin provides details about the much-anticipated return of the LA Auto Show. The event will be operated in full accordance with all safety protocols required by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. Vaccination cards or a negative COVID test within 72-hours of arriving onsite at the LA Convention Center along with masks will be required for entrance to the show. Free onsite rapid testing will be available to those who wish to test onsite. LA Comic Con is celebrating its 10 anniversary this year and as crazy as the world has become, the September 25-27, 2020 dates were impossible to pull off. However, CEO Chris DeMoulin and the staff of LA Comic Con have been working with the City of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County and the LA Convention Center to find the safest way possible to bring about LA Comic Con this year. The event itself has been pushed back to December 11-13, 2020. The extra five months gives them time to comply with CDC regulations, social distancing allowing everyone to have 28 sq ft of space to themselves, one way aisles throughout the entire convention and masks will be required. On top of that LA Comic Con has rented out the entire LA Convention Center, which covers 1.1 million sq ft of indoor and outdoor space. Virtual tickets will also be made available for those who are still not comfortable enough to venture out into bigger crowds or have pre-existing health conditions that will not allow them to attend in person. The full details are in the press release are on www.fanboynation.com and for even more in depth answers, listen to our interview with Chris DeMoulin. For more info about L.A. Comic Con, please visit: www.comicconla.com or follow us on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

Since the coronavirus is definitely the only thing anyone is talking about, we talked about it too. But this was way back on Wednesday, March 11. Things have definitely changed since then: Two of Terri's family members were laid off from work, Catherine's kids schools are converting to digital learning this week, most churches have gone virtual, and Nicole's daughter won't get to become a citizen at the LA Convention Center with 10,000 other people.

Beth Garbitelli and Nora Taranto MD add a new intro and share their own insights on this Curbsiders classic! Physician suicide is a problem. There, we said it. We all have that story; Many of us have experienced the symptoms of depression or suicidal ideation ourselves, or have the colleague, mentor, friend, teacher, sibling, parent, or significant other who has experienced these signs and symptoms. Some of us (probably more than you’d think) have lost someone meaningful to suicide. And yet, we don’t talk about suicide and mental health in medicine, or at least, not enough. So, today, we at the Curbsiders are trying to change that. The problem of depression and suicide is a particularly real one in medicine, a profession that is, by its very nature traumatic and emotionally draining (both in terms of work demands and also the sick and dying patients we treat). In this episode, we talk with expert Dr. Elisabeth Poorman about the natural history of depression in residency and beyond. We share some of our own personal stories, and discuss how we can support one another and reach out for help, how to take care of our mental health in an emotionally demanding career, how to deal with licensing questions and worry about stigma, and what systemic changes may be coming (read: we think need to be coming) down the line. N.b. This is a sensitive topic. If this is triggering for anyone listening, the national suicide hotline number 1-800-273-8255. Moreover, if anyone needs or wants guidance on available resources, Dr. Elisabeth Poorman has made herself available via email at doctorpoorman@gmail.com, or you may reach out to any of us on Twitter. We are happy to talk and see that you get the support you need. New episodes return January 20, 2020! The carmakers' representatives aren't salespeople, but happy to help Evans reminds potential visitors the LA Auto can be a hands-on experience. Test drives are offered by many manufacturers. Several companies have interactive exhibits. The LA Convention Center is located in one of the busiest areas of metropolitan Los Angeles. Evans provides suggestions for parking and well as public transportation. Comprehensive details are available via the website https://laautoshow.com. Norma Bastidas is a single-mother, a survivor of sexual violence and human trafficking. An ultra athlete, she broke the Guinness World Record for Longest Triathlon after swimming, biking, and running 3,762 miles from Cancun, Mexico to Washington, D.C., a known human trafficking route. She views athletic feats as metaphors for the incredible trials faced every day by the survivors of sexual violence. Norma's mission is to educate and empower, demonstrating to the world that one's past does not dictate one's future, and prove that everyday people are capable of making extraordinary strides in the fight against the problems facing the world today. Norma talks about her son, who lost his vision very quickly due to a degenerative disease, facing her past, and advocating for self and others through running. We also dig into mental health and why it is so important that we normalize the conversation around mental illness diagnosis, end the stigma and unfortunate labels. The woman is strength, grit and determination. I love her reminder that no matter how tough things get.. it will be ok and that you are not your circumstances. Your identity is not what happened to you. You can join Norma and I live at EmpowerCon at the LA Convention Center on August 31st.
