From a polish standpoint, I think it does for sure. But personally? Ehhhh....Prime 2 is objectively a well made game. The polish is there, great story, graphics, soundtrack, exploration. It splits the game's map into 2 distinct worlds, and on paper that's a great idea (as Link To The Past proves). But in execution it seems to be little more divisive. And while some people love this game, I found the maps and dark world equal parts brilliant and frustrating as fuck.My guest this week is our resident Metroid junkie, Stpd Mnky. This game's pretty sick.If you haven't played it, it's a standard sidescrolling shooter/platformer, but with one catch: no jumping. All your platforming is done with a grappling hook. It's a really ambitious concept with a learning curve to be sure, but for the most part I think it works great. Add in a map to explore, a story (kinda) and hitler's exploding head (seriously), and you have yourself a Commando that's Bionic, my friend. My buddy David Rae makes his return to the show this week and we're finally talking the game he's been holding me to play since RTG started. In this episode of Wargaming Recon, I reflect deeply on my journey as the host, sharing both personal milestones and pivotal life events that have influenced the creation and sustainability of this podcast. After a hiatus beginning in Fall 2025, I am back to engage with the community that has supported me through numerous challenges and joys. I take this moment to express my gratitude for Robert Dunn and Peter Bryant who stepped in during my absence, and their contributions have been invaluable to keeping the community alive. The focus of this episode is also on a significant family health crisis. In a heartfelt revelation, I share the news of my mother's battle with stage one, grade three uterine cancer. Her diagnosis was a shocking development, and I discuss how her surgical recovery has provided hope amidst the emotional turmoil. My family's experiences navigating this difficult time have instilled in me a profound appreciation for life, the power of resilience, and the incredible support from loved ones. Moreover, this episode marks a critical announcement: the coming year will be the final year for Wargaming Recon. After over two decades of episodes, I emphasize how integral this podcast has been to my identity and personal growth. It wasn't merely a hobby; it has been a community and a family that has shaped who I am today. From grieving the loss of my dear friend Adrian to celebrating the bonds fostered through gaming, this platform has allowed me to connect deeply with both friends and listeners alike. Expressing a mix of nostalgia and anticipation, I advocate for acknowledging the emotions surrounding this transition—both for me and for the community. I want listeners to celebrate the journey we've shared together, as we reflect on past episodes and the impact they've had. I also highlight the positive initiatives we've undertaken, from charity work for Extra Life to advocating for mental health discussions. It's been a platform for authenticity and vulnerability, helping many through their struggles while connecting folks from all walks of life. As I step back to prioritize my family and embrace new opportunities in gaming, including regular streaming on Twitch, I firmly state that while the podcast's conclusion is bittersweet, our community and friendships do not end with it. The relationships built here will continue to thrive, and I look forward to exploring new adventures while remaining an active part of the tabletop gaming scene. Now as we embark on this final year, the focus will be on celebrating our collective journey, sharing stories, and engaging with special guests. I encourage everyone to join me in this reflective and joyous time, as we savor the moments of connection and growth we've all experienced together through this podcast. There are still many exciting episodes ahead, and I am eager to cherish this farewell chapter with all of you. Many have told me this is in their top 2 X games alongside the original, and now that I've played it for myself, I get it.The original trilogy of Mega Man X games on the SNES range from perfection to meh (in my books), so I was curious to see how the series would go once it left the 16-bit era. So this week we're going back to 2001, the flat faced, non-backlit GBA, and the pretty damned good Mario Kart: Super Circuit.I didn't play this one a lot back in the day, but going through it 25 years after launch, I was pretty impressed. It feels like a hybrid of Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64, and for the first ever portable Kart, it's pretty damned solid. Hiding the Super Mario Kart tracks as extra content turned me on a little, too.The Luigi to my (or Mark's) Mark, ye olde Bradley McCue, joins me on the show this week. We had a great time talking Super Circuit and the Mario Kart series as a whole, and I can guarantee y'all is won't be FOUR YEARS before we talk more kart racing! And before we race, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week someone asks what my most anticipated games of 2026 are, I explain what (and briefly answer) the most frequently asked questions I get are, and we talk about the leaps in game tech that blew our minds the most.Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One'!! I've been singing the praises of Bioshock for years, and finally decided it was time to replay and review the sequel.I hadn't played Bioshock 2 since it released, and all I really remembered about it was that you played as a Big Daddy. Taking it for as pain for the first time in almost 15 years was a blast, and while I (ironically) the the Big Daddy mechanic falls a little flat, I still can't get enough of the world of Rapture.Ye olde Tylet is helping me close out the year by talking about killing crazy people with drills and singing the praises of genius Andrew Ryan's world of Rapture. Would you kindly join us?And before we go harvesting, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week someone asks if the Switch has surpassed the SNES as my favourite console? This is my go-to Christmas game, it's a masterpiece, and in a lot of ways it's superior to Mario's SNES work. You all know how this game works. You play as Donkey and Diddy Kong, you're trying to get your bananas back, and you jump in a lot of barrels. The platforming in DKC is superb, the music is fire, and the level variety keeps the game fresh the whole way through. And the graphics? Get outta here...Captain N of the Retrotopia podcast joins me this week and we had a great time talking a great game. I don't know how anyone with a soul could not love this game, and aside from a couple minor gripes, we spent most of our hour together about just how special of game this is.And before we get stuck in barrels, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week someone brings up a promise I made re: Ecco the Dolphin, we talk about the must-play PS5 titles for anyone getting a system for Christmas this year, and if 'Blank Man' was a robot master, what would he be all about?Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! What else do you need me to say? This game is a masterpiece. And it's not just that Arkham City is a great superhero game, but it really wrote the script for so many games in the future. The free-flowing combat system has been copied over and over, and I'd range that the quality of Arkham City's story, gallery of characters, setting, and graphics have set bars that most modern games still can't touch 15 years later. And while I've played some GREAT PS2 games for the podcast, God of War II might just be the best of the bunch.I've loved the modern God of War games, and whenI finally played the OG a few years ago I thought it was really solid. I've been looking forward to diving into the rest of the series ever since, and hey hell, the sequel did not disappoint. In my opinion, this game raises the bar in every way from the first game. Better story, better graphics, MUCH better pacing, and more incredible boss fights. I don't even mind the reliance on QTEs (minus the Zeus fight, which is a little cheap). My guest this week is our resident Stpd Mnky, my buddy Daniel. He was there for the original God of War episode, and he's back for round 2 to help me remember the names of all these stupid Gods and to help me sing the praises of just a fantastic game. He'll be back for part III, and I can assure you it won't take another 4 years to get there. And before we take on the Gods, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, a new game collector asks for a little advice. Do 'spiritual successor' games ever live up to expectations? And am I planning on picking up any games on Black Friday??Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! And for me and my bro, one of those games was Jaws for the NES.To be fair, it actually isn't the worst NES game based on a movie in the NES library. Or the worst LJN NES game for that matter. You sail around in a boat killing animals and collecting shells that you use for stronger guns to shoot Jaws. You also bomb jellyfish from a plane. And that's, well, that's pretty much. It isn't particular deep, but it's not particularly awful, either. My boy Dan from Dissect That Film returns to this week to talk about hunting sharks. He also gives me a bit of an explanation as to how this ties into the movie, WHICH movie it ties into, and we talk about ideas for a modern jaws game as well. This episode is longer than the game is. It's not a flex, but it is a fact. And before we look for a bigger boat, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week someone asks if Mass Effect 1 is worth getting through to reach the phenomenal Mass Effect 2? A few people ask about Kingdom Hearts, so I share my long-standing thoughts on that series and why I don't want to touch it. And what do I consider to be must-play NES and SNES games??Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 NES movie games: Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, and Nightmare on Elm Street.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
We're back after another successful Extra Life and wouldn't you know it, we have a lot of games to talk about, including RV There Yet, Baby Steps, Power Wash Simulator 2, Black Ops 6, Metroid Prime 4, and more - but not before digging in to what the Steam Machine is, and who precisely it might be for. This week's music: Lola Young - Conceited
This week we've dragged Anthony out of his COVID hole so we can talk about a lot of games, including The Outer Worlds 2, Bloodlines 2, Arc Raiders, Ball X Pit, Ninja Gaiden 4, and a lot more. Extra-Life 2025 lands on November 8th. Find more information at rebelfm.wtf and please donate if you can! This week's music: Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike
