Well this is what my guest Fiona Thomas did ,and today we talk about how being diagnosed with depression resulted in her becoming a freelance author and writer. Fiona always enjoyed writing but never thought she could turn it into a career. When she was out of work due to her mental health she started a blog which grew as she started to talk about the things she was struggling with. This turned into her writing for magazines on the topic and gradually moving into writing full time, instead of just a side hustle. She has also published two books "Depression in a Digital Age" and "Out of office" and continues to write, and also help clients to follow their passion of writing too. Fiona talks openly about her mental health struggles, and things she has done to keep on top of it in this podcast.. It’s time we took a good hard look at rest, and our ability to maximize it. That’s why I’ve begun this show by reading my essay, 13 Ways to Overcome Sleeplessness. Even if you think you’ve tried everything, I know you’ll find relief here. Some of these remedies continue to help me sleep quite well! Today’s interview is with the interesting Fiona Thomas. She’s really gotten underneath our need for social media—and what that costs us in terms of depression and anxiety. And given that more and more of us are soaking up more digital media all the time, given world news right now, this seems like an important heads up. I hope you find the following as useful as I did: Fiona’s own digital media & depression story How this led to compulsive overheating and working out The cost of following social media influencers How to protect yourself online if you’re vulnerable Taking an ‘offline vacation’ and what the impact is How (and why) to be more authentic online Did the depression/anxiety shift with her online use? How she now eases her anxiety May this be a help as we navigate rough waters. I was unable to work for almost a year, and turned to blogging in that time as a hobby. However, though it started off as a way to pass time, I quickly became obsessed with the online world, leading me to experience high levels of anxiety. Now a proud advocate for technology as a communication tool for those of us who suffer the crippling symptoms of mental illness, I have used the internet to help hone my identity and create a supportive community. I’m a successful author and freelance writer with work published on Metro, Healthline, Heads Together, Mind, iNews and Happiful magazine. Her first book is a mental health memoir called Depression in a Digital Age and her second is a guide to freelancing called Out of Office (available to pre-order now!). In this episode, we dig deep on how to navigate the world of work when you have mental health issues - or even if you're just a normal, living, breathing, emotional human! - and how and why so many women have finally decided that being their own boss is preferable to office politics and business burnout. We talked about: Fiona's journey from being signed off with depression and burnout at work, to finding a new career online and making a living as a writer and course creator How adulthood is so often about “unlearning” everything we thought we were “supposed” to be doing How to be yourself at work - or, how to start a new career in freelancing, even if you feel as though you're not good enough, not ready, or not qualified How to show up as yourself online, and how being honest helps others to live their purpose too Giving yourself permission to dream big The problem with “toxic positivity” and why we all need to learn to just “feel our feelings” Learning to know yourself, whether you're introverted or extroverted or somewhere in between And how to make your work work for you...and not the other way around! On this week's episode author Fiona Thomas shares her experience of mental health and the importance of managing it in the workplace. She discusses the dangers of burnout and why creating a positive community online is so important. Fiona is from Birmingham, UK and was diagnosed with depression in 2012 and felt completely lost. She was unable to work for almost a year, and turned to blogging in that time turned as a hobby. However, though it started off as a way to pass time, Fiona quickly became obsessed with the online world, leading her to experience high levels of anxiety. Now a proud advocate for technology as a communication tool for those of us who suffer the crippling symptoms of mental illness, Fiona has used the internet to help hone her identity and create a supportive community. Fiona has her own website and is a freelance writer with work published on Metro, Grazia, Healthline, Heads Together, Mind and Happiful magazine. This book is an extension of her work, and a celebration of all that's possible through the power of social media. Buy Depression in a Digital Age here: https://amzn.to/2Kt5pfY.
