Camp is not a ‘thing' in Australia. And it totally should be! Daniel Levine, entrepreneur in the tech and legal space, has been hosting a unique and powerful tech community event since 2015. He's got a great philosophy when it comes to creating meaningful connections - a great way to be a boundless leader. The recipe for great connections and a meaningful event: it starts with the premise, “Attendee first”, and “Disconnect to connect”. Best tips include: no name tags, no VIP break outs, speakers stay for the entire event, all inclusive ticket, and choose your own adventure. All we can do as leaders is “set the table”, do that right, and things progress well.
In today’s episode, we have the wonderful Steven Pulver, Co-Founder of Fireside Conference, North America’s premier tech retreat with 450 founders and investors. Steven is also the Co-Founder of MinuteBox, a corporate record solution for law firms. Even as a kid, he loved outdoor camping and spending time amidst nature. As he grew older, Steven shares that these outdoor excursions helped him with his anxiety. How did Steven manage to channel all his passion to form Fireside? He shares how he and his friend Daniel started Fireside as a side-hustle in 2015. From the get-go, Fireside was meant to be a place for people to build great connections and bring everyone together: a close-knit community. Steven and Cherry Rose discuss how communities like Fireside have helped their mental health. Tune in now! AARON REYNOLDS is a humourist, professional speaker, and the man behind the @EffinBirds and @swear_trek Twitter accounts. When he's not on Twitter, you can find him producing a series of podcasts and at ComicCons dressed as George Lucas. He has been a baseball writer, a fine art printer, and a mall Santa Claus photographer. Aaron was raised in Mississauga, Canada, a suburb where they cut down all the trees and named the streets after them. He currently splits his time between Toronto and Ottawa. HUMOR ACROSS AGES & CULTURES. David began this episode by identifying the role humor has in personal and situational awareness. People in touch with humor are better-equipped to identify and react to the nuances of life. In safety situations that can be the difference between life and death. David stated, "Humor is observed in all cultures and at all ages. Historically, psychologists framed humor negatively, suggesting it demonstrated superiority, vulgarity or, per Freud, was a defense mechanism. But, modern research offers strong evidence that humor activities. People that appreciate humor report greater life satisfaction than those who don't see the humor. Clinical psychologists are using humor to increase subjective well-being. Humor is an essential part of personal safety - as people receptive to humor tend to perceive the subtle nuances of situations and not to be too literal and linear - which is difficult to do in a world that can punish you for laughing." WHAT IS EFFIN' BIRDS? A compact, comprehensive, and very silly field guide featuring more than 200 of the rudest birds on earth. Effin' Birds is the most eagerly anticipated new volume in the grand and noble profession of nature writing and bird identification. Sitting proudly alongside Sibley, Kaufman, and Peterson, this book contains more than 150 pages crammed full of classic, monochrome plumage art paired with the delightful but dirty aphorisms (think "I'm going to need more booze to deal with this week") that made the Effin' Birds Twitter feed a household name. Also included in its full, Technicolor glory is John James Audubon's most beautiful work matched with modern life advice. Including never-before-seen birds, insults, and field notes, this guide is a must-have for any effin' fan or birder. EFFIN' BIRDS INTERNET MEMES. Effin' Birds memes have infected the Internet – in a good way, with some type of powerful condition that invokes belly laughs, smiles and a re-conditioning of personalities. David and Aaron discussed the witty comments social media users routinely post whenever an Effin' Bird meme appears on their screen. A common theme is for people to see the reflections of their own lives within the memes. A stoic bird above the caption, “Frankly, I Expected More,” describes the majority of work meetings, right? You can't say it, but you're thinking it – and yep, there's an Effin' Bird meme for that! WHEN WILL THE BOOK BE AVAILABLE? After crowd-funded the first printing of the 208-page “A Guide To Field Identification – Effin' Birds,” Ten Speed Press asked Aaron to refine his original work. There was a sticky point, however. In order for the book to release for the Christmas season in America, Aaron had only 3 months to render the final version. He met the deadline and Effin' Birds releases through Ten Speed Press on October 15, 2019. Due to strong pre-orders, it is already debuting as the #1 new release in Bird Field Guides. EFFIN' BIRDS MERCHANDISE. Find me the person that doesn't relish in a deck of Effin' Birds playing cards! Go to effinbirds.com for your stocking stuffers and everyday supply of clothing, mugs, pins, cards and the Effin' Birds book. WHAT IS THE FIRESIDE? Throughout this interview, Aaron shares his strategies for turnings negativity and stress into positive creative energy. He attends and presents at the Fireside Conference at rural (no WIFI) Camp Walden in Canada. As one attendee wrote, "It's tempting to describe Fireside as an innovators version of Woodstock. However it wasn't Woodstock – or Coachella, Glastonbury, Afrika Burn, or even Burning Man. It was all of them and none of them at the same time." FOLLOW DR. This season we are talking about the two elements of Joy: Well-being and Success. Success is the achievement of goals, whatever they are. Well-being is having a positive relationship with our abilities and our limits, whatever they are. We need to miss out on some things to get there. Some beliefs. Some habits. Some hustle. All the FOMO. DISCONNECT TO RECONNECT | A Fireside Special This week, we're releasing two special JOMOcast episodes with guests from Fireside Conference: an offline conference for techies. First up, Peter Katz. When Peter - a Juno-nominated musician - showed up for a sold-out concert in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere, he'd get a job offer that would change his life forever. Instead of hustling year-round as a creator, he now spends an entire month each year unplugged from touring, from the city, from the non-stop pressure to produce, in order to invest in the lives of teens building resilience in the mountains. It was a risky choice - one that could have jeopardized his career but, instead catalyzed his career and his life. Key takeaways from our conversation: - The joy of missing out on personal gain to invest deeply in others- Letting go of predictability to embrace work that brings you LIFE- Consciously choosing to trade the noise and hustle of the city for the silence of the mountains Topics covered:- The traps of personal branding- The freedom and joy of outward focus- For communities to thrive we all need to elevate each other and we can't do that if we are isolating ourselves- It takes time to process feelings- The “wow” factor: the importance of curiosity GO DEEPERWant to experience the joy of missing out in your daily life? Meet Jessica Brunette and Payam Shalchian. Payam, a former management consultant working 70-hour weeks, had little time for the things that supported his well-being, namely his relationships - especially with his wife Jessica - but also with his extended family and friends. Payam would wake up, as many of you do, to a flood of email messages demanding his attention. By nightfall, the pressure wouldn't let up. When Jess's sister and brother-in-law shared their vision for opening a bed and breakfast in the country, Jess and Payam were captivated -- by the idea of living in community, and by the freedom to experiment and play. Now co-owners of the Edward Bed and Breakfast, the foursome co-live in the wilds of Ontario's Prince Edward County. My husband Michael and I spoke with Jess and Payam on our anniversary in September sitting around a picnic table at Camp Walden. Wholly Veggie! was built on the belief that the world would be better off with more veggies at our tables. Not potato chips, hickory sticks or frosted flaky tips. Real veggies. The kind your grandma used to pull out of the ground when you were a wee child. This has been our goal since our founders first got together, and what still drives us to this day. Let’s face it. Everyone has seen a wilted carrot in their fridge. The truth is, eating veggies all the time is hard. That’s why we’ve worked to develop veggie products that offer convenience without sacrificing on the quality. No soy, gluten, dairy, GMOs’s, or added sugar can be found in products. Business conferences are big business. The World Economic Forum in Davos, the Milken Institute Global Conference, and the Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference are among the largest and best-known of the lot. By comparison, the annual Fireside Conference – held at a remote retreat a 3 ½ hour drive from Toronto – is a puppy; but a best-in-show gathering at that, attracting a small group of top innovators, thought leaders, and investors in the entrepreneurial universe. Fireside’s co-founder, Daniel Levine, tells host and reputation coach Dean Rotbart just why every year Fireside gets more than ten times the number of applicants than it accepts – and the secret to having what it takes to land a coveted invite to the off-the-grid, off-the-record meeting of some of the brightest minds in business. I'll be honest. This conversation didn't exactly head in the direction I thought it would, but that's what makes it so darn fun to listen to. It might be my most entertaining episode yet, and in the end, it came out full of value, too. Dan Levine and Steven Pulver started Fireside Conference four years ago with the idea that they'd make a startup conference more like summer camp - informal, fun, and intimate. The kind of event where you make real connections and new friends, far beyond corporate networking. It caught on, and even though they lost a lot of money that first year, Dan and Steve decided to keep doing things the way they want, financial consequences be damned. And there's lessons in that. But they keep growing, and have found ways to run an insanely cool conference that attracts some incredible talent without having to pay anyone to attend, and that's led to other revenue opportunities. If you're thinking of creating a conference or any other event, this is a great episode that covers a wide range of things you'll absolutely need to consider before putting your plans in place! Your hopes, your dreams and your business success can all disappear if the critic persuades you to play it safe and small. “We try to curate an environment that fosters serendipity.” Daniel Levine Today listeners we have one of the co-founders of Fireside Conference, Daniel Levine on the show! Once a year, some of the brightest minds in business and tech disconnect from our digital world, travel to Camp Walden near Toronto to spend a long weekend networking and learning from one another in a fun filled outdoor adventure.
