On this episode of the Hopeless Sportsmantic Podcast, Chase and Taylor break down the first week of the MLB season. We give our thoughts on Folty being designated for assignment, the struggles from the back end of the starting rotation, and some positives as the Braves get off to a hot start in this Co-Vid 19 season.
Folty is gone. Offense salvages a dominant week after a rough start in Tampa. Touki and Wright earn another start; did Newcomb?

Joe Patrick, 92.9 The Game Braves Insider, joined Sam & Greg to talk about our Atlanta Braves. At the start of the season, or shortened season, The Braves starting pitching lineup seemed to be set. You have the young gunslingers in Max Fried and Mike Soroka along with the former all-star veteran Mike Foltynewicz. While Fried and Soroka are set, Foltynewwiz, not so much. During Foltynewwiz, last start, he was taken out during the game and designated for assignment. He was made available for other teams to pick him up, but no team did. Now, Folty has been sent down and still with the Braves, but Joe Patrick said in a shortened season, we will not see Folty make any major contributions to the Braves. Patrick also said that the Braves did not want to see him go, but with 80 mph sliders and 89 mph fast balls, he was no help to the Braves. A team that thought they were set at the starting pitcher position, now are trying to fill a hole that Folty left. Can Tousssaint fill it? See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.
This week's baseball fun fact. Markakis is coming back, thoughts on Joe Kelly's suspension, the new owner of the Royals. I then discuss the Folty DFA with someone who is friends with the man, Mark Hampton and we have a good conversation. I then discuss some of the awful takes from Braves Social Media Hot Takes. I then talk to Josh Roseman about some current baseball cards and which card's are trending and who's falling. Twitter-@High_And_Inside
With nearly a week of game action in the books, Jake, Jesse, and Eric discuss some hot starts, Folty's DFA, Pearson's debut, the Marlins COVID saga, aces to the IL, and who you should be stashing for the next wave of prospect callups.

The guys look back on the up-and-down first four games of the Atlanta Braves including the team designating Mike Foltynewicz for assignment. They look at the options for the Braves beyond Folty, and also whether or not he's pitched his last game for Atlanta. Will, Joe & Caleb also look at the standouts for the Braves in the first weekend, while weighing the gravity of the Marlins positive COVID tests on the game at large. See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.
The MLB Season is in Jeopardy as 17 players for the Marlins test positive for COVID-19. The Braves part ways with Folty. Zion returns to the bubble and will play in the NBA opener against the Jazz. I look back at the career of Alex Smith.
DOB and EOF respond to Mike Foltynewicz being designated for assignment after his grueling first start of the season against Tampa Bay (:30). The guys point out Foltynewicz's slimmer physique and the challenging hiatus, where consistency and routines were difficult to maintain. Eric shares his story of significant weight loss and how it affected his pitching (7:30). Jhoulys Chacín's addition to the pitching corral, and the rise of some young Braves arms, could help fill the space left by Foltynewicz (13:30). The Marlins outbreak of positive Covid-19 tests is alarming to say the least (24:45). Could this be Kyle Wright's big moment to step up (31:30)? Plus, Austin Riley's "light-tower power" was on full display against the Mets (34:00); William Contreras is making big strides (46:15), and Dansby Swanson is off to a stellar start (53:00). DOB and EOF recap the latest Braves news (:30) before discussing Atlanta's projected rotation, including how the team will manager their fifth starter spot (8:15). The guys cover the dilemmas the club has faced, like Touki Tousaint and Will Smith's positive Covid-19 tests at the start of camp (the latter still hasn't been cleared), Kyle Wright being exposed to a carrier of the virus, which has resulted in logging less reps than other starters and, of course, Cole Hamels' injury (12:30). There are several factors at play that could affect the outcomes this rotation produces; like Folty and Newcomb's performances and how the assortment of pitchers react in a starter/piggyback role (22:30). The duo react to the Braves signing Matt Adams (33:15), and gauge the potential impact he can make team as well as distinguish his role. Freddie Freeman detailed his nightmare run in with Covid-19, which makes his return to practice and scrimmage and producing effectively in those workouts all the more surprising (41:30). The Bravos Boys wrap up today's show by discussing Mike Soroka being named the Opening Day starter (48:15); the short history of duels Soroka has against Jacob DeGrom, whom he'll face Friday, and Brian Snitker's comment about the rotation's fifth spot (58:00). The Braves are back on the field with intrasquad scrimmages and David and Eric weigh in on the early results. There's no timetable for Freddie Freeman's return and the Braves added youngster Bryce Ball to the player pool (12:35). On the field, Max Fried and Mike Foltynewicz shine early on and the guys debate how good the rotation will be in a short 2020 (25:25). The guys also take a look ahead to the 2021 schedule which came out this week.
Atlanta Braves beat writer Dave O’Brien joined Dukes & Bell to talk about the restart of baseball, if any Braves will opt out of the season, plus what’s the Braves biggest weakness? When asked about the Braves biggest challenge. “Starting rotation, you could be good, you could be very good, but you’re not going to be great, but you could also be below average. If Hamels isn’t back from injury, if Fried has any kind of problems, Folty you don’t know what you’re getting from start to start, you’ve got Soroka he’s your ace and he’s a stud there’s no doubt, as long as he’s healthy he can go toe to toe with anybody as he showed in the playoffs.” O’Brien said “But in a compressed season the teams like the Nationals with their three headed monster at the top of the rotation, and the Mets you’re going to go into some series where it might be hard to match up with those guys going all out you’ve got to get the game to your bullpen. So I would say the starting rotation, you’ve got to have Hamels healthy, you gotta have Folty step up his game and you’ve got to have Fried healthy.”

DOB & EOF welcome Atlanta Braves starter, Mike Foltynewicz, to today's show! The band of Bravos have "Folty" catch them up on life during quarantine, including relishing time with family and working out (while taking proper precautions) with fellow pitchers, Sean Newcomb and Mike Soroka (2:00). Are the Braves better suited for an abridged season than most other teams? The 28-year-old shares his thoughts on that and the reinforced rotation with a healthy Cole Hamels (18:45). Foltynewicz responds to the proposed plan by the owners, and reacts to playing an 82-game schedule in a cross-league division format and the implementation of the universal DH (24:00). The trio discuss the issue of money that is stunting the player, owners negotiations (39:30), plus the emphasis on safety (47:00). Before parting ways, Foltynewicz describes his thoughts and emotions after the divisional series loss to the Cardinals, and how he's turned part-criticism and part- support into motivation (1:01:30).Save 40% off your first-year subscription to The Athletic by visiting: theathletic.com/755isreal
