The new season of the Justice Visions podcast focuses on issues surrounding victim participation, mobilization and resistance. It focuses on debates that will also be addressed during the upcoming Justice Visions conference, taking place 13-15 March 2024, in Ghent (Belgium) and online. In this episode, we talk about the methodological challenges of doing research on victims' lived experiences of participation in and resistance against formal transitional justice processes. Our studio guest is professor Sanne Weber. Her research focuses on gender-just reparations in rural communities in Colombia's Caribbean region, where survivors were engaged in the process of land restitution and collective reparations. In the episode we focus on participation in formal avenues, because, as Sanne argues, thee continue to be of paramount importance for victims: “What is really important about the more formal processes is the recognition by the state, because eventually it's the state's responsibility to redress the harm and transform the situation. Even though informal or non-formal spaces are very important and can have very important goal of rebuilding social fabric and recreating trust.” Yet, while her initial plan was to employ participatory research methods, she soon found that her potential research participants had limited interest in this approach, due to a “participation fatigue” which can be traced back to how the formal transitional justice process was organized. Colombia' Victim law is often hailed for promoting innovative forms of victim participation, yet significant challenges have characterized its implementation. As Sanne argues, “Participation in this process had required a great investment of time and effort, but they weren't seeing the results of their participation.” This raises important questions for researchers in terms of how to navigate this scepticism regarding participatory methods, the power dynamics surrounding it, and the concrete strategies for foregrounding the voices of people who experienced violence. As Sanne underscores in the podcast, this is a trial and error process: “It is really a way of trying to overcome obstacles by sharing the power between participants and researchers. This has a long history in Latin America - this approach of combining research with activism and valuing grassroots knowledge.” This episode on research methods lays the foundation for a next episode which focuses on the actual experience of survivors who participated in formal processes.

She was eventually diagnosed with Multifocal Motor Neuropathy. You can join Jennifer's support group, MMN Warrior, on Facebook. Peter Ulrichts obtained a PhD in immunology from the university of Ghent (Belgium). This season, we will be delivering exceptional conversations and creative ideas while creating a safe space for connection and thoughtful experiences. We are going beyond sexual harm and really asking, "What does trauma look like and what does this experience look like for the Western Kentucky communities we serve?" We will be talking with various community members, and delving into difficult conversations where trauma intersects our communities and people. Season Three finds us growing and changing how we do our work. Our goal is to drop 2-3 podcasts per month on Fridays and you will find most of our episodes on YouTube as well! Yes, New Beginnings has a YouTube channel. In this episode, New Beginnings podcasters Jennifer, The Friendly Therapist, and Shelby, Victim Advocate have a very authentic conversation with Dr. Jim Tidwell - VP of Population Health at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. I worked with Dr. Tidwell when I was the RN Case Manager for the ICU and I found him to be one of the kindest, compassionate and most amazing humans I have ever had the honor to work with. His dedication and commitment to patients, their care and recovery is the best I have ever witnessed. I think you will find him to be articulate, thoughtful and in touch with the needs of our community.Dr. Tidwell grew up in Utah, though he lived in Central America for 4 years as a boy. As a young man he served a two-year mission in Argentina for The Church of Jesus Christ. He graduated from Brigham Young University then moved to Houston Texas for four years where he went to Baylor College of Medicine. After graduating from medical school, Dr. Tidwell trained for 6 years in Temple, Texas to become a Plastic & Reconstructive surgeon. He then completed an additional 18 months of fellowship training in Microsurgery in Las Vegas Nevada, Ghent Belgium and Taipei Taiwan. When his training was complete, he returned to Texas where he practiced and served as an Assistant Professor in a residency training program. He joined Owensboro Health in 2015 when he was recruited to help start the OH Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Program. He speaks fluent Spanish and returned to Guatemala each year to serve a week-long medical mission performing cleft-lip and cleft-palate surgeries. He remains a diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery, though a spinal cord injury in 2018 left him unable to operate. While he maintains a presence in the clinic, now his primary role at Owensboro Health is as Vice President of Population Health. He oversees Owensboro Health's efforts outside the walls of its hospitals and clinics, to improve the health of the communities that it serves. Before becoming paralyzed, Dr. Tidwell's favorite hobbies were to camp, hike and travel with his family. Jim and his wife, Jennie, have been married for 24 years and have three teenage children who keep life busy and fun. He is still adjusting to life in a wheelchair and all else that comes with being quadriplegic. He remains devoted in his faith and sincere in his desire to serve others.YOU WON'T WANT TO MISS THIS EPISODE. Remember to subscribe to our Podcast - Start By Listening - found on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, Deezer and more! You can find this episode on YouTube today!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VewBOVXzr64Also subscribe to our New Beginnings YouTube channel!! - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxT9OQkPpCPSAgcUhhqUkmQStart By Listening will drop on Fridays, 2-3x monthly, bringing you an interesting and intriguing look into the work we do, while educating about trauma and healing. If you would like to reach out and contact Jennifer or Shelby, please email at SBL@nbowensboro.org. Finally, a few shout outs. If you liked our jingle jingle, hop on over to www.uriahwilde.com and talk with Seth Hedges. He created the beautiful music for our podcast. Thank you SETH! Another special thank you to Rodney Newton, he helped us learn how to put this Podcast together and create a beautiful thing. Thank you RODNEY!!!To find local resources for sexual abuse please visit www.RAINN.org or call the National Sexual Assault Hotline: 1-800-656-4673, 24/7/365

Hercules & Love Affair is one of the most ecclectic acts ever. They are loosley veiled and pretend to be an electronica dance group, but, that's only if you heard their hits. Sure they do that kind of thing, but they have managed to avoid any sort of responsibility to any genre. I got to talk to Andy Butler at from his home in Ghent Belgium, and we covered the new album, being nothing like any of his other work, mutual friends, and experiences that created such a dark folk spiritual opus of semi-techno. He had Budgie on drums for this album (Siouxsie and the Banshees, Creatures) and ANOHNI on vocals. Sometimes I felt like I was in church, like a 4th century newly established Christian church, or I was at the edges of hell or just oblivion, or wherever the music wanted to take me. Andy is openly gay, and has weapons grade ginger hair, at least on top still. In this episode we talk about creativity in language and visual communication. We published many of the images and logos we mention on our website, http://wordsactions.blog. Here you can find the full transcript, too.  In the first part of the episode, Erika mentions the following study on how colour influences investment decisions:  Chan, C. R., & Park, H. D. (2015). How images and color in business plans influence venture investment screening decisions. Journal of Business Venturing, 30(5), 732-748. Veronika published some of her work on the links between colour and language in this article:  Koller, V. (2008a). ‘Not just a colour’: Pink as a gender and sexuality marker in visual communication. Visual Communication, 7(4), 433-461.  Moving on to individual logos, here are  the Toblerone bear and the crest of the city of Bern. Veronika’s research on city brands, including a categorisation of their logos, was published as Koller, V. (2008b). ‘The world in one city’: Semiotic and cognitive aspects of city branding. Journal of Language and Politics, 7(3), 431-450.  We specifically mention the logos of three places where we live or were born, resp.: Ghent (Belgium), Dunaszerdahely (Slovakia) and Stroud (UK). We also discuss what changes in logos and type fonts can signalise, and Veronika mentions the case of Lancaster University, which had such a change in 2014. Some fonts can indeed elicit strong reactions, as evidenced on the website comicsanscriminal.com. The form and connotations of type fonts were theorised by Theo van Leeuwen: van Leeuwen, T. (2006). Towards a semiotics of typography. Information Design Journal, 14(2), 139-155.  For a general interest read, try this book:  Garfield, S. (2010). Just My Type: A book about fonts. London: Profile Books.  Bernard then reveals a different side of himself when he talks about the irregular type fonts and idiosyncratic spelling used by heavy metal bands. At the end of the first part, we talk about names for a company and Erika mentions a study showing a correlation between length of a domain name and visits to a website.  In the interview, Chris Arning mentions, among other works that have influenced him: Jakobson, R. (1981). Linguistics and poetics. In Selected Writings. Berlin: de Gruyter Mouton, pp. 18-51.  In the third part of the episode, we analyse linguistic creativity on the website visiticeland.com. This is not an overview website but one to be explored through interacting with it, so have a look. Erika observed that the designers seemed to have followed a model developed under the name of ‘brand linguistics’: Carnevale, M., Luna, D., & Lerman, D. (2017). Brand linguistics: A theory-driven framework for the study of language in branding. International Journal of Research in Marketing, 34(2), 572-591. The red thread for this episode has been travel. You can take a flight of fancy and read about the language and semiotics of luxury destinations here Thurlow, C., & Jaworski, A. (2012) Elite mobilities: The semiotic landscapes of luxury and privilege.  Social Semiotics, 22(4), 487-516 or learn about Gosia Drewniok’s research on the language branding of luxury hotels here – happy travels and see you again for the next episode.

Kathy and Ines discuss Kathy's most recent trip, which included an extended stay in the tiny but mighty country of Belgium. Kathy tells us why she was charmed by Ghent's quaintness, why Bruges is the "look at me!" middle child, and why Brussels is so underrated. She also names some of her favorite sites in all three cities, including churches, plazas, churches, museums, churches, swans, churches, and also some more churches. Find out how Maximilian of Austria's hatred of Bruges shaped the city, what Ghent does to welcome new babies, and why Brussel's Museum of Musical Instrument should be on every traveler's list. Plus, tips on Belgium beer, waffles, and frites!  PS: JOIN OUR ONLINE TRAVEL COMMUNITY!!! (Pretty please???)  Love XX, Will Travel? Don't miss an episode!
