This one's named for a region named after a road—the Via Aemilia—that the Romans built after they took this chunk of northern Italy off some Celtic tribes back in 189 BC. A bunch of towns grew up along the new thoroughfare, and now there are a number of football clubs scrapping over this turf. The two biggest and most decorated are BOLOGNA, from the medieval masterpiece known for its food, architecture, and the world's oldest university; and PARMA, another ancient town that's…known for its food. This is Italy, after all. These two clubs have enjoyed very different histories: Bologna were a big deal in the early decades of Serie A, at a time when Parma were looking up at them from a league (or multiple) below. Then, in the 1990s, the Crociati (Crusaders) of Parma rose to the lofty heights of the Italian league when it was the greatest in the world, fielding a parade of famous names—Gianluigi Buffon, Fabio Cannavaro, Lilian Thuram, Hernán Crespo, Gianfranco Zola, Juan Sebastian Verón—thanks in part to some very rich and very volatile ownership. When the multinational dairy and food corporation with a controlling ownership stake, Parmalat, collapsed early on in the new millennium, it decimated the club. Now Bologna are back on top again, playing Champions League football again after a fine season under Thiago Motta, now departed for Juventus. They lost a couple of key players in Joshua Zirkzee and Riccardo Calafiori, but they just played their biggest game in maybe 60 years at Anfield on Wednesday. You can hear all about that in this week's episode with Christine Cupo, reporter and analyst on the CBS Sports Golazo Network and for Attacking Third, the hub for coverage of the women's game on CBS Sports. If you're enjoying The Football Weekend, please give us a rating and leave a review! On today's episode we are joined by one of the most iconic Italians to grace the Premier League. From humble beginnings in Sardinia, Gianfranco Zola was famed for playing the game in a beautiful way. He became one of the rising stars in his hometown which earned him a big money move to Napoli who were led by the God-like figure Diego Maradona. After impressing in Naples, he moved to Parma and formed a deadly partnership with Faustino Asprilla, challenging Juventus for the Serie A title. However, he struggled for game time the following season under manager Carlo Ancelotti, which opened the door for Zola to make the move to Stamford Bridge. His audacious, entertaining style of play helped ignite Chelsea's late resurgence in the late 90's and he became a firm favourite for the blues. He's also widely seen as a trailblazer who formed English football's early foreign revolution. After finishing his playing career back home in Sardinia, Gianfranco moved into management, managing teams such as West Ham, Watford and Birmingham City, often under extremely challenging ownership groups. Gianfranco joins the show and opens up on those challenging situations whilst giving his honest opinion on the current footballing landscape and the state of his beloved Chelsea FC.Subscribe for future episodes. 18+ please gamble responsibly.Warning: this episode contains language that some people may find offensive.

Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Mark Meehan to look back at the 2002-03 season.Chelsea began the season with only one signing, Quique De Lucas, the scurrying midfielder from Espanyol on a free. Money was tight and runours abounded that Chelsea were in financial trouble and as a consequence would have to off load big nae stars such as Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Gianfranco Zola.As it was Chelsea began the season in decent form with draws against Arsenal and Man Utd and a 3-0 home win against fancied Newcastle. A last minute goal by former non-league player Ben Wright in the first leg of the UEFA Cup first round against Norwegian part timers, Viking FK, should have been no more than an irritant. But it came back to haunt Chelsea as they were knocked out of Europe for the 3rd season in a row by lowly opponents with a 4:2 defeat to the Vikings in the second leg, sandwiched in between a 3:2 defeat at home to struggling West Ham.Thankfully, form picked up and it was to be two months before Chelsea suffered defeat again, at the hands of Man Utd in the Worthington Cup courtesy of a rarity, a Diego Forlan goal.Chelsea finished the year in 2nd position in the Premier League and could have been top had it not been for the infernal tinkering of manager, Claudio Ranieri. Gudjohnsen and Hasselbaink were not scoring the goals they had the season before, but Gianfranco Zola was having a renaissance, at one stage the Premier League's top goal scorer and scoring some eye opening goals.Could Chelsea mount a realisitc challenge for the Premier League title in the New Year and break the Arsenal and Utd duopoly? Was it more likely that we could have another crack at the FA Cup, going one better than last season? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Stamford Chidge, Jonathan Kydd and Mark Meehan look back at the 2001-2002 season in our '50 Years of Chelsea' series. In part two we pick up the story in the New Year where hopes were high for another League Cup final after a 2-1 win in the semi-final first leg against Spurs, followed by a 5-1 rout of West Ham in the league. However, the unthinkable happened when Spurs thrashed Chelsea 5-1 in the second leg, their first victory over Chelsea at White Hart Lane or anywhere for over 20 years. Thankfully, normal service was resumed with back to back 4-0 victories against Spurs in the FA Cup quarter final and Premier League, with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink scoring a perfect hat-trick in the latter. In the FA Cup third round, Gianfranco Zola had scored one of the best goals ever seen at Stamford Bridge. With league from suffering from the usual inconsistency, our only hope of silverware lay in the FA Cup. A scrappy 1-0 victory over Fulham in the Villa Park semi-final, complete with mass celery throwing, set up a final at the Millenium stadium in Cardiff against bogey side Arsenal. Blighted by injuries to Le Saux, Hasselbaink, Babayaro and an increasingly influential John Terry, Chelsea were the better side in the final until Ray Parlour and Freddie Ljundberg both scored worldies to ruin the day out. The 2001-2002 season was one of transition, turmoil off the pitch and frustration on it. Given that Hasselbaink and Gudjohnsen had scored 52 goals between them a 6th place finish in the league was a disappointment. Arsenal proved to be the team we just could not beat as we finished FA Cup runners up; the League cup semi loss to Spurs still causes nightmares and the UEFA Cup defeat against lowly Hapoel Tel Aviv was a debacle. Many supporters blamed Ranieri for his tinkering and sparse use of the genius that was Zola, but there were bright spots in the season with the Hasselbaink and Gudjohnsen's partnership and goals up front, the best we'd seen since the days of Dixon and Speedie, and the emergence of John Terry and Frank Lampard as two of Chelsea's most important players together with Carlo Cudicini who had a superb season in goal and rightly won POTY. The Chelsea FanCast looks back, season by season, to 50 Years of Chelsea history from 1970 to the present day.Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd, Mark Meehan and Dayne Whittle to look back at the 1997-98 season. The 1997-98 season was described by Chelsea Historian Rick Glanvill as “turbulently successful” and it is hard to disagree and in Part Two we review from January to the end of the season. In January 1998, Chelsea were 3rd in the league having at one stage reached 2nd and still in the Coca-Cola Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup with everything very much still to play for in the second half of the season.Tradition dictates that the first match in the New Year was the FA Cup 3rd round and Chelsea, the FA Cup holders were pitted against Manchester United, our recent Cup nemesis. None of us, however, could have predicted the insanity that ensued that day. 0:3 down at half time; 0:5 on 74 minutes and then a Graeme Le Saux worldy and two goals by Vialli made it 3:5 with only a few minutes to go and gave us hope. Well actually they didn't really! In the next match Chelsea made amends by knocking out Ipswich in the Coca-Cola cup, again after extra time and penalties, resulting in a semi-final tie against Arsenal. Due to the peculiarity of the fixture list this meant Chelsea would play Arsenal at Highbury in the Coca-Cola Cup, followed by another visit to Highbury in the league and then the return Coca-Cola Cup at the Bridge.Chelsea's record against Arsenal at the time was very poor, so many supporters were hoping for the best but expecting the worst. A 2-1 defeat in the 1st leg thanks to a Mark Hughes goal kept us in the tie. But no one expected what would happen after the 2:0 league defeat. Ruud Gullit was sacked after failing to agree a new contract and Gianluca Vialli was announced as his replacement; his first match in charge being the Coca-Cola Cup semi-final at home to Arsenal.Having toasted his appointment with his teammates with a glass of champagne before kick-off, Chelsea put in a superb performance beating Arsenal 3-1 to reach another final at Wembley. They duly dispatched Middlesbrough in the final, again after extra time, to lift their second trophy in two seasons. Before the Coca-Cola Cup final, Chelsea had seen off Real Betis in the European Cup Winners' Cup final, thanks to Flo's two goals in the away leg. All eyes were now focussed on European glory and as a result the league form suffered.Against Vicenza in the first leg Chelsea lost 1:0, not a bad away result in Europe, so hopes were high for the second leg back at the Bridge. Hope made way to despair when Vicenza went 2:0 up on aggregate, but Chelsea stormed back, cheered on by one of the noisiest crowds ever experienced at the Bridge. Poyet and Zola put us on level terms with Vicenza and Mark Hughes sealed it with a stunning header to pass to himself to score on the volley. The season would now end with the chance to win the European Cup Winners' Cup for the second time in the club's history. Stockholm would be the venue, Stuttgart the opponents and with Chelsea supporters in all four sides of the tiny stadium, Gianfranco Zola came on with 19 minutes to go and scored a sublime goal with his second touch to win Chelsea the trophy. 1997-98 was a remarkable season with great players like Vialli, Hughes and Zola scoring some wonderful goals; two trophies in one season for the first time ever and the shock sacking of Ruud Gullit. No wonder it is one of the most memorable Chelsea seasons of all time.To help us celebrate 50 Years of Chelsea we've partnered with 3Retro who have a superb collection of Chelsea retro gear and are offering 10% OFF when you use the 3RETRO10 code and if you order over £50 of merch you get FREE UK delivery. The Chelsea FanCast looks back, season by season, to 50 Years of Chelsea history from 1970 to the present day.Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd, Mark Meehan, Marco Worrall and Martin Wickham to look back at the 1996-97 season.Part One of our look back at the 1996-97 season, one of the most memorable and emotional seasons in Chelsea's history, starts with the incredible signings of Italian stars Gianluca Vialli and Roberto di Matteo and future French World Cup winner, Frank LeBoeuf.Ruud Gullit began to assemble a Chelsea side with a distinctly continental flair and the Chelsea supporters loved it. But while the trio all settled in quickly, Chelsea's start to the season was steady rather than spectacular. All this was overshadowed by the tragic death of Matthew Harding, in a helicopter crash on the way back from the Coca Cola League Cup defeat away to Bolton in October. Harding, a real man of the people, who would drink a few pints of Guinness in the Imperial Pub with the supporters, had bankrolled the signing of players such as di Matteo and LeBoeuf as well as the new North Stand and the new Shed End which was being built at the time. The grieving for Matthew Harding was lifted a little in November with the signing of Gianfranco Zola, a genuine world star from Italy. Zola made an immediate impact scoring superb goals and striking up a telepathic partnership with Mark Hughes. But how would this impact Vialli, already a favourite with the Stamford Bridge faithful? To help us celebrate 50 Years of Chelsea we've partnered with 3Retro who have a superb collection of Chelsea retro gear and are offering 10% OFF when you use the 3RETRO10 code and if you order over £50 of merch you get FREE UK delivery.
