Steven Railston and Tyrone Marshall brave the freezing Northeast weather to unpack Manchester United's lackluster 0-0 draw against Sunderland. With Michael Carrick making five changes to the starting XI, the lads dissect a performance where United were physically outmuscled and struggled to bypass a relentless high press. They dive deep into Joshua Zirkzee's polarizing role as a "9.5," debate Lisandro Martinez's rustiness upon returning from suspension, and look ahead to the crucial summer transfer window. With Casemiro absent, the glaring need for midfield reinforcements takes center stage, alongside the overwhelming consensus that Michael Carrick has officially earned the permanent managerial job.
Michael Carrick speaks after Manchester United's draw with Sunderland. He spoke about Casemiro's future. TIMESTAMPS0:00 thoughts? Tough game Credit to Sunderland We had to dig deep We weren't at our best I still quite liked a lot of the things To take a point and clean sheet is okay 0:48 Zirkzee? I thought it was a tough game for all the boys I thought there were times he linked the play really well He played a real part for the team I understand it's not easy for any player when you haven't played for a bit 1:25 did this feel like a sign you need more depth? It's one game We can't judge everything on one game We know the quality of the player we know the strengths and the things we need to improve on 2:15 We faced a tough game If we weren't in a good headspace we would have lost the game The fact that our pride in ourselves and each other motivates us 3:00 Casemiro and Sesko Casemiro will be fine next week Sesko has been carrying a shin problem for a while so we have to manage that 3:25 Casemiro leaving. Is this a chance to assess life without him? Not just totally on one or two games Over time you get a clear picture of what it looks like Today and next week won't be a decisive factor in decisions 4:15 No red card today. Thoughts? I haven't seen it. Bruno wasn't happy about it when he came into the dressing room 4:45 United has struggled in the North east. Because of atmosphere?

#941 | Ed and Adam break down United's 2-1 win away at Crystal Palace, a match that split neatly into two stories. The first half looked laboured. The second half looked like a team that finally woke up. They dig into what changed, who stepped up, and why the performance still raises as many questions as it answers. The conversation moves into the bigger picture too. Kyle Macaulay's impending arrival sparks a discussion about how United's recruitment department might finally take shape, what that means for squad building, and how data should guide the next phase. They also look ahead to West Ham, weighing possible lineups and the tradeoffs created by injuries, form, and fixture congestion. 00:00 Introduction01:17 Agenda: Palace, recruitment strategy, West Ham02:31 TV scheduling and matchday experience04:25 Palace vs United analysis06:48 Second half turnaround10:02 Casemiro, Bruno, Mount16:11 System limitations and squad balance19:44 Academy and youth pathways24:04 Zirkzee and Mount goals27:11 Mateta and the penalty shout35:31 Kyle Macaulay and recruitment45:08 West Ham preview and lineup ideas55:19 Rotation and January window56:56 Close If you are interested in supporting the show and accessing a weekly exclusive bonus episode, check out our Patreon page or subscribe on Apple Podcasts. After Manchester United became the first team in 8 months to beat Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, Rio is joined by Ste Howson and Joel Beya to analyse that victory along with Arsenal's draw at 10-man Chelsea. There's detailed analysis on the personnel utilised in the wing-back roles after Ruben Amorim admitted that two of those players are currently playing “far from their best”.After Bruno Fernandes overtook Paul Scholes on the list of record Premier League assists, Rio admits that nobody could be expected to replace the output of the captain - even when he's playing in a deeper role.Rio also compares the challenge for Joshua Zirkzee to the one that former team mate Diego Forlan faced and questioned whether the Dutchman has the self-belief to command a regular starting spot.Zirkzee may be given more opportunities during AFCON where Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbuemo will miss up to seven league matches during the most congested part of the season - something that worries Ste and Rio. They believe the depth of Amorim's squad is not sufficient without further reinforcements.Joel is happy with Arsenal's point at Stamford Bridge and Rio compares the mentality of the Arsenal players to that of his title-winning squads in terms of playing rivals away from home. It's time for The Truth!Dougie's back in business with Sam after a well-earned week off and it's a return with a bang as we turn our attention to Manchester United - always a behemoth of a topic, who are currently seemingly locked inside a battle with themselves. After a dreary start to 2025, questions are being asked of Ruben Amorim's stewardship, and if United have actually got worse since he took over. Now, to be fair, Amorim himself said when he took the job that things were going to get worse before they got better, but much of the fanbase was expecting more of an uptick in form five months in than what we've seen on the pitch, especially after defeat to Fulham in the FA Cup wiped out one of the two remaining options that United had for silverware this campaign. But is that criticism fair? Amorim has struggled to get this squad ticking, but there are mitigating factors - the players are taking some time to adapt to his system (those that can), whilst the most impactful players in this squad have been struck down by injuries just as things were taking an upturn for them. Is that enough though, to absolve him of fault? Should United ride out this storm, trust in their new manager and try to build something long term? Or have we already seen enough to suggest that this isn't going to work and that a change is needed before United get bogged down in another cycle not going anywhere? Well, The Truth is somewhere in the middle... And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
Fulham have done it! No 1-0, no red cards but plenty of nerves. Manchester United are left smarting after Bernd Leno saves penalties from Lindelof and Zirkzee to see Fulham through to the next round of the FA Cup. Silva's side ground down a very poor Man United team through 90 minutes, extra-time and finally, penalties. George is joined by Yasmin, Elizabeth and Luke Resch, on his Fulhamish debut, to bask in the glorious sunshine that comes after beating Man United at Old Trafford. It was by no means a beautiful or entertaining game of football for the neutral but it did have Fulham fans' heartbeats sky-rocketing. Bassey's header put Fulham ahead in the final stages of the first-half but a moment of magic from Bruno Fernandes threatened to send Fulham packing. The second-half and extra-time were littered with Man United chances but Leno's heroic hand of god clinched victory for the Cottagers. In part two, they answer some of your listener questions. Is there a feeling better than this on a magnificent spring morning? Is Bernd Leno pinching Mark Schwarzer's spot for second best all time Fulham keeper? It's time for The Truth!Sam Tighe and Dougie Critchley sit down to discuss one of the burning questions of the international break - whether Erik ten Hag is the man who can guide Manchester United back to where they want to be, challenging for league titles and competing consistently in the Champions League. United's summer was a chaotic one, starting with the new INEOS-backed ownership fluttering their eyes at a number of different managers across Europe, before finally coming to the conclusion that the best one (or the best that they could get) was already at the club in the shape of Ten Hag. Three games into the season, and the knives are out for Ten Hag again, with United's last game before the international break - a 3-0 home loss to Liverpool - driving home the point to many that the Dutchman was perhaps not the best man to be in the dugout as United attempt to get back to the top of the pile. So is he a help or a hindrance to the club's plans to return to the top table, and are his tactics limited or simply making the most of what he has at his disposal? The Truth is somewhere in the middle... Hello Rank Squad! With this episode releasing bang between the two semi-finals of both the European Championships and the Copa America, we've had to switch things up a bit this week, so we wanted to talk about some of the transfers that might come off the back of these Euros. Dean selects five players to discuss - Riccardo Calafiori, Dani Olmo, Nico Williams, Ivan Toney & Matthijs de Ligt - and we talk about their potential destinations, where they might fit best, and any concerns we have with the profiles of players going into the right clubs. Before that, there's Things We Love, where Dean discusses the current US obsession with getting Jurgen Klopp in as the next USMNT manager, and Jack pays homage to Thiago Alcantara - the midfield maestro who announced his retirement from the game this week. It's Ranks!
