We've talked about the mindset that has to come first. Now let's talk about the work.Because here's the thing: wanting to write a book means we actually have to write well. If you feel like you're not there, yet, don't be discouraged. Writing is a craft, and crafts can be learned.Ways to Actually GrowA few places to start:* Read the classics on craft. On Writing Well by William Zinsser and The Elements of Style by Strunk and White are worth working through slowly, practicing the concepts as you go.* Get honest feedback. Not from family members who love us too much to critique us, but from fellow writers who will kindly tell us the truth. That kind of feedback is where real growth happens.* Find a writing community. An in-person critique group through a local library or coffee shop can be a gift. Online, the Writers' Bloc Community at mywritersbloc.com is a warm, supportive space specifically for female Christian writers, with opportunities to submit writing for critique and connect in monthly Zoom sessions.* Submit to publications. Sites like Living by Design and Gospel-Centered Discipleship accept article submissions. Following their guidelines is good practice, and their editorial feedback can be genuinely useful. It also builds your online presence in the process.* Just write. Regularly. Blog posts, letters to friends, a church newsletter column. Try different genres, different tones. Experiment with fiction if you usually write nonfiction. Play with poetry. The more we write, the more we discover what actually sounds like us.Clarity on where to begin can make all the difference when we're just starting out and don't know what to do first. If that's where you are, Start Here is a free 3-day email course designed to answer your questions and point you in the right direction. Before we talk craft or contracts or query letters, we need to talk about something that will shape everything else on this journey.Humility.Not the kind that shrinks back and whispers, I have nothing to offer. And not the kind that charges forward thinking, I already know what I need to know. Both will quietly sabotage the work before it ever reaches a reader. The Two ExtremesSome of us feel a deep sense of calling. God may have put this book on our hearts. But a divine assignment doesn't exempt us from the learning curve. God can call us to write a book and expect us to grow in the craft. Both things are true.Others are drowning in insecurity. That hesitation can feel like humility, but sometimes it's just fear wearing a disguise. Here's the line worth sitting with:Confidence doesn't mean we have nothing to learn. Humility doesn't mean we have nothing to offer. What Teachability Actually Looks LikeWhen someone critiques our writing, something in us flinches. It feels personal. But that resistance, if we let it run things, will keep us small.Proverbs doesn't soften this: “Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid.” (Proverbs 12:1)And here's a practical reality: if sharing our words with a trusted friend feels terrifying, what will it feel like to publish a book for strangers?A Few Next Steps* Pray and journal. Ask God to show you where pride, in either direction, is shaping how you see yourself as a writer.* Learn the industry. Let yourself be a beginner. That's not weakness; it's wisdom.* Find someone to read your work. Start thinking about who in your life could offer honest, caring feedback. One More ThingIf mindsets are getting in the way of your writing, The Christian Writers' Mindset Makeover is a free resource that walks through six common struggles and the biblical truth that meets each one. After exploring multiple ways to grow your platform, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by all the options. In this episode, we're simplifying the process and helping you discern your next right step. Instead of trying to do everything, you'll learn how to choose one platform strategy that fits your current season, strengths, and capacity—so you can move forward with clarity and consistency. What You'll Learn in This Episode:Over the past several episodes, we've covered a variety of platform-building strategies, including:* Public speaking* Podcasting* Guest blogging and podcast interviews* YouTube* Collaborations and giveaways* The YouVersion appBut here's the truth: you can't do all of them—and you shouldn't try to.In this episode, we walk through five key questions to help you confidently choose the best platform strategy for you.5 Questions to Help You Choose Your Next Step:1. What is your current capacity?Consider your time, energy, and emotional bandwidth. Your season of life matters more than you think.2. What are you already doing? It's often easier (and wiser) to build on something you've already started rather than creating something brand new.3. What are your strengths?Lean into what comes naturally—whether that's teaching, storytelling, or connecting with others.4. What sounds interesting and fun?Pay attention to what energizes you. Excitement can be a strong indicator of where God is leading.5. What can you be consistent with?Consistency matters more than frequency. Choose a rhythm you can realistically sustain.Key Takeaway:It's far more effective to focus on one strategy done well and consistently than to try several strategies sporadically and burn out.Season Wrap-Up:This episode wraps up the current season of the podcast. We'll be taking a break in April to rest, plan, and prepare for what's next.

Christian writers often struggle to understand where God's sovereignty and our responsibility meet—especially when it comes to building a platform. If God is in control, how much effort should we put in?Do we wait for Him to act, or move forward on our own?In this episode, we explore why the answer is usually both/and. God is sovereign, and He also calls us to be faithful stewards of the work He's given us.Just as God usually works through ordinary means—like doctors for healing—He typically blesses writers through faithful effort: growing in the craft, learning how publishing works, and doing the work of building a platform. Calling doesn't replace preparation. We're called to do what we can control and trust God with what we can't. Our job is faithfulness. The fruit belongs to Him.Resources:Learn more about working with me as your writing coach. Sign up for Pen Points, a weekly email to encourage you in your writing. Watch the podcast on YouTube. One of the biggest concerns Christian writers have about building a writing platform is pride. Is it prideful to attach your name to your work? Does promoting your writing mean you're really just promoting yourself? In this episode, we tackle those questions head-on and look at what Scripture says about pride, humility, and having an accurate view of ourselves as writers. You'll learn how to distinguish true humility from false humility, how to examine your motives without becoming paralyzed, and how promoting your writing can be an act of faithful stewardship rather than self-exaltation.Links and resources:Learn more about working with me as your writing coach.Sign up for Pen Points, a weekly email to encourage you in your writing.Watch the podcast on YouTube.Read the blog version of the podcast.Download the “Christian Writer's Mindset Makeover”.The Purposeful Pen is a weekly podcast for Christian writers designed to help you build a writing life with eternal impact. Do you ever feel like you're behind—as a writer, as a Christian, or just in life? Maybe you've caught yourself thinking, “Shouldn't I be more spiritually mature by now?” or “Is it too late to write my book?” This mindset of being “behind” is one that many of us carry, but it's built on ideas that don't line up with truth. In this episode, I unpack three root issues behind the “I'm behind” soundtrack that plays in our heads—our identity, our value system, and our tendency to compare. You'll be reminded that God doesn't measure progress by speed or visible success but by faithfulness. Whether you're just starting out or have been on this journey for years, you are not behind—you are right where God has you. In This Episode:* How our mental image of “what a real writer (or Christian) looks like” feeds feelings of being behind* The difference between cultural timelines and God's process of growth* Why God values faithfulness over speed or output* How comparison distorts our sense of progress—and how to realign with God's truth* Encouragement for writers who feel “late to the game”If you'd like to dive deeper into the unbiblical mindsets that get in our way as writers, download the “Christian Writer's Mindset Makeover”. Think sports strategy meets small-business execution—clear metrics, tactical pivots, and simple scripts you can use today. We walk through a SWIFT-style review cadence that turns reflection into action: strengths to double down on, weaknesses you block time to fix, and the improvements, implementations, and innovations that compound results. You'll hear how to build a full book without waiting on algorithms—client appreciation invites that spark referrals, storefront intros that plant local roots, and discovery calls that convert because the questions are better. We even dig into pricing with confidence: tie rate increases to skill upgrades, invite clients to sponsor your growth, and communicate the plan with candor and care. There's a reason great coaches obsess over numbers. We break down the KPIs that matter for trainers—leads per week, show-up and close rates, ARPC, content-to-call conversion—and show how to read them like a dugout watches pitch counts. You'll leave with a 90-day roadmap: daily story prompts with polls, a DM follow-up system, a weekly beta test, and a review cycle that makes iteration inevitable. Ready to stop “wanting more clients” and start winning the quarter? Tap play, build your plan, and tell us your first move. If this helped, subscribe, share it with a trainer who needs a push, and drop a review so more coaches can find it.Want to ask us a question? The one thing you need, more than anything else, to change your finances, or your life, for the better is the right mindset. Your mindset makes all the difference. How you think about your money determines how you act with your money. To become a person who builds wealth, you need to start thinking (and therefore, acting) like a wealth builder. Not sure what that looks like? In this episode, I'm walking you through some of the most impactful mindset shifts you can make to become a person who succeeds with building wealth. Get ready for a money mindset makeover that has you thinking like a real wealth builder! I saw a quote online that said, “a negative mindset can cost you more than any expense.” I had to sit and appreciate how true that quote was. When your mindset isn't up to par, you not only miss out on opportunities to change your life, but you rob yourself of any joy you could have for what is going right in your life.   Here's a glance at this episode: [02:38] If thoughts dictate your actions, what makes mindset so critical is the actions you take relative to the thoughts you're having. [06:33] Do you constantly think you never have enough money? Shift to the mindset of there are always opportunities to make more.  [11:29] How can you spend slightly less on discretionary things and take that difference and put it into an investment account? [17:46] Raya shares her first realization of the fear of success. It never occurred to her that this is a real fear that impacts how people think and act. [21:36] Raya shares some actionable tips people can implement instantly to start building more confidence with money.    Rate, Review, & Follow: Did you love this episode?
