Have you heard of Girls on the Run? Cyndi Roy Gonzalez, Executive Director of GOTR Greater Boston is here to tell you all about it! GOTR is a nonprofit afterschool program for elementary and middle schools that inspires girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident. GOTR is the “why” for our Miles in March challenge fundraiser! We are crazy about GOTR! Why?...GOTR gives girls the tools they need to make connections and deepen friendships, face challenges head on, be intentional in decision making, and give back to the community. It keeps girls moving but it's so much more than running. It's about inspiring girls to know they are capable of anything they put their minds to. We think GOTR is outstanding and you will too after you hear what Cyndi has to say. Just this year, 2024, Sarah Pardus realized a goal that she'd been aiming toward for a decade: she ran the Boston Marathon. While her road to that finish line was full of twists and turns, it was also a full-circle moment. It both begins and ends with the terrific organization Girls on the Run (GOTR). Sarah's first organized run training came at a young age, through being a part of GOTR. Throughout high school and into college, Sarah was a highly competitive swimmer, and running helped her stay fit. And when an injury ultimately ended her swimming career part-way through college, Sarah returned to running. Intertwined in her athletic journey, Sarah developed an eating disorder. Over the years, as she mindfully surrounded herself with healthy role models and a strong support system, Sarah was able to establish a healthy relationship with her nutrition. As part of her adult running life, Sarah reignited her involvement with GOTR, now as a volunteer. For her own running goals, Sarah found great joy in running longer distances on the road and set her sights on qualifying to run the Boston Marathon. Sarah both qualified for Boston and ran to support GOTR, the organization that first got her into the sport. Hear the whole story of how it all came together in this episode. Some of the most important years of our development, when we're learning communication skills and how to navigate the world, are spent in the jungles of the elementary school or middle school playground and classroom. It can be very easy to learn the wrong lessons, struggle with friends, and end up carrying those challenges into the future. All of this is especially true for girls, who face a unique set of challenges on top of everything else. Girls on the Run Sierras is working to help fill that social and emotional learning gap by teaching girls from 3rd-8th grade important skills for self esteem, choosing friends, talking about emotions and relationships, and much more during an after-school program based around (but not actually focused on) running. Over the course of a 10-week season, girls might learn about how to choose the right friends for them and how to let the wrong friends go, how to properly name their emotions and the healthiest way to deal with them, what steps they might take to move towards their dreams, and they do it all while preparing for a 5k run with no clocks, and where every girl's race bib is number 1. On this episode, Executive Director for Girls on the Run Sierras Joy Heuer joins the show to talk about the GOTR programs and philosophy, the importance of inclusion for all girls, creating equitable access to after-school programs, how the lessons learned in GOTR are brought back to the classroom and into the home, and so much more. GOTR has Spring and Fall programs, as well as a summer camp, and more information can be found at https://www.girlsontherunsierras.org/ Thank you so much for listening! How Aiesha balances a love for exercise and fitness with the need to appreciate body diversity and let go of diet culture. How society expects our bodies to stay the same. Episode 43 In this episode, GOTR takes the skeletons out of their closets and goes on a deep into all things forensic geologies, the mysterious interface between geology and forensics. While there was no exact date when scientific methods were first introduced to solving murders, there is no doubt geology had an early influence. Uniformitarianism is a concept that establishes a crucial link between geologists and forensic scientists, where the use of clues are used to work out a past sequence of events to determine what happened. We go through how a crime scene might be controlled for, and clues are handled. We then cover the various types of evidence forensic geologists might find helpful while finding tangential paths to travel down. Between the bars of our main discussion, we present to you another mineral minute, and on the back half, we close things out with a case full of drugs, government coverups, and murder! (More about Molly below.) They are doing such amazing work empowering and building confidence in girls ages 8-14 with the hope that these girls will grow into our future leaders of the world… and will lead with compassion, kindness, empathy and integrity - something that seems to be lost these days in a world full of noise and negativity.  In this episode, Molly explains the components of the program and the powerful transformation and results that she sees every season running the program. My favorite: the feeling that each girl experiences as they cross the finish line of their 5K.  “Your existence can make the world better… (we are all) here is some way to contribute positively”… just about sums up a huge component of what GOTR is teaching (as described by Molly.) And you know, how much that resonates with me!  I'm pretty sure, you'll leave this episode inspired to be a part of this work in some shape or form! Molly has a deep commitment to access and inclusion, and as Executive Director she has ensured that the organization has the financial resources to allow every girl the opportunity to participate, regardless of financial situation. She connects people in an authentic manner to the mission of Girls on the Run."

Episode 40 This episode is dedicated to all those who ever thought that banded iron formations were boring and basic as we here at GotR do a deep dive into these really Spiffy BIFs. We discuss such things as what are they? Where do they come from? Is there any geological significance? What do they tell us? Every time we think that we are going to just have a nice, easy topic, the more and more we read about it and reflect on our own assumptions, it turns out to be so dang complicated and could be several different things at the same time. But we do our best to be as thorough as possible while trying not to get lost in the weeds of this seemingly simple topic. Keep in mind that 1. geology and the history of Earth is a rather complex subject matter, and one should always proceed with caution when interpreting the precipitation mechanisms in BIFs. So take a seat, grab your rock hammers, and favorite whiskey with your favorite podcast duo, and come take an adventure into the wonderful world of BIFs with your favorite podcast! Until next time remember to be cool, stay tuned, and keep it on the rocks! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/geology-on-the-rocks/support

Ep.16 It's very apt that I should have the amazing Pete Reed on the show this week, as things are really ramping up for the Race the Thames challenge which starts on 22nd March. Pete is front and centre of the fundraising, alongside his former crewmate Andy Triggs Hodge (who I interviewed a few weeks ago here) with his Paravengers team. For those who don't know him, Pete is a three-time Olympic rowing champion (and multiple World Champion), as well as a Commander in the Royal Navy. In 2019 he suffered a spinal stroke, out of the blue, which paralysed him from the waist down, and since then he's been in rehab. He spoke extensively and candidly to Sir Matthew Pinsent about the stroke and life in the immediate aftermath in a brilliant BBC interview, which you can find on BBC Sounds, so I left that aspect of Pete's life in Matthew's capable hands. Instead, Pete and I chat about:Where he is now and life in rehabDeveloping an attitude to cope with change and uncertaintyWhat Pete finds most difficult - managing people's expectationsWhether a rowing coach or a rehab physio is a harder taskmasterHow being an athlete prepared the way for his current challengesStrength of character - nature or nurtureLife in a wheelchair -  the dos and don'ts when you meet someone in a chairPhotography and approaching people for portraitsThe progress of his rehab*GOTR exclusive* - his new role with the Royal NavyBuilding ethical fitnessRowing in a pair with Andrew Triggs HodgeRace the ThamesYou can support Pete and his Paravengers crew in Race the Thames here. The crowdfunder started by Andy Triggs Hodge to help Pete to afford basic adaptations and equipment is here.

From The Facebook Event: We've adapted our Girls on the Run and Heart & Sole programs into an immersive experience just for grownups! Our mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident - and grownups can use these messages to inspire their limitless potential, too. We have two virtual practice times available! Join us from 12:15-1:15pm, or 6:00-7:00pm - over your lunch break or after work - on January 26th! "Practice" is virtual, so you can access anywhere. This event is free, but pre-registration is required (space is limited). Register at the link below! https://www.raceplanner.com/register/index/gotr-for-grownups-january?sid=0d2fd5fd0146409f9b9590b13f99aaf2&fbclid=IwAR2Sqa4sZST1d9vmDB47eQOrAk_jSxNW-MgGiy0bpvW-T5OTX9FVImiljHI Our hope is that you will walk away from this experience not only with a deeper understanding of our programs, but also with a few skills that will serve you personally and professionally. We’ll be covering 3 GOTR topics at this workshop - Star Power, Self Talk, and Finding Balance! One significant difference in our programs for girls and this Lesson for Grown-ups is physical activity. Physical activity is a distinguishing element of our programs and contribute to the positive impact we have in girls’ lives. We have eliminated that component from Lessons for Grown-ups due to time and physical constraints, but we hope you are able to get active with this inspiration, too! GOTR for grownups is free, and we hope you consider donating to our council so we can continue to serve girls right here in Southwest Michigan this spring, and beyond. The Lorenzo Commentaries Podcast

As a diabetic I had some pop tarts in my knapsack (and was prepared to to declare it as a medical necessity because of the heat, etc.) and as a result of the loooooong lines (I spoke with fellow concertgoers and 90 minutes was an underestimation) those were what I consumed that day! Someone I spoke with waited in line for over 2 hours, and when near the front was told the booth was out of food; rumors abounded that another booth out of food were selling plain rolls for $2. On her way there she encountered an enterprising (greedy? opportunistic??) young man selling the 4 $8.00 burgers he had for $13.00 each! This is not my idea of a good time! And with 2 stages why a 30-60 minute wait between sets? Nateva in 2010 had 2 stages, and the flow between acts was seamless. The smoking ban was ignored and unenforced, but at least most smokers hung by the outlaying fencesOn the plus side, I appreciate I didn't have to buy water to stay hydrated, Lack of shade was an issue for me, as I'm not a sun worshipper, but for an outdoor show, I suppose it's the nature of the beast.I wasn't overly impressed with the daytime acts, though they were pleasant enough, But the Dropkicks had a great (though brief) set and Mumford & Sons made the day worth it! And fireworks to boot!!I feel if we were stop #4 in the GotR tour rather than the premiere, it might have gone smoother. but all in all it was a great day for Portland, Mumford & Sons, me, and my 15,000 other concert buddies!
