Electrifying athletes like Olga Korbut and Nadia Comaneci helped make women's artistic gymnastics one of the most popular events in the Olympic Games. But the transition of gymnastics from a women's sport to a girl's sport in the 1970s also laid the foundation for a system of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse of gymnasts around the world.  In Degrees of Difficulty: How Women's Gymnastics Rose to Prominence and Fell from Grace (University of Illinois Press, 2021), Dr. Georgia Cervin has written “one of the first books to examine the history of women's gymnastics as an international sport. It aims to do this in the context of international sport and global politics, as well as the social norms that have been constructed within the sport. Hence, the book fluctuates between looking inwardly at the sport and outwardly at gymnastics' place in the world. It reviews the origins of gymnastics and its position in the Olympic movement, how it was governed and the reasons behind the rules, where the sport fits into nationalism and international relations, who teaches gymnastics and how they do so, and what it all represents about class, gender, and race…This book thus offers insights into how and why women's gymnastics developed the way it did, including insights into how dangerous sporting cultures are created, as well as challenging what we know about the Cold War and international relations throughout this period.” This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Myron currently leads Mission Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Myron has a deeply impactful story about meeting Jesus behind bars and being transformed into a missional leader seeking to reach every inner city in America. The conversation touches on church impact, entrepreneurial mission, what Myron's vision for the future is and so much more! Here is a bio on Myron: Myron is the most unlikely leader in his region. At the age of 18, he stood before a judge while facing 200 years in prison due to his life of gang banging, drugs, and crime. While facing a life sentence of prison time, one thing changed - his heart. He'd surrendered his soul to the Lord Jesus. While leaving the courtroom with a 16 to 33-year sentence Myron had heard a whisper. "I'm going to get you out of prison to plant churches.” This word from God became the vision that has now inspired thousands. Through a series of miracles, the prison doors opened for him after 8 years. Myron received his B.A.. in Biblical Studies and Business Leadership at Grace University. He is currently working towards finishing his M.A.. in global leadership from Crown College. Myron has authored several books, of which his latest book Digital Ministry has become a number one bestseller in Amazon. Myron has launched a host of churches, and businesses. He is now the Lead Pastor of Mission Church, a grassroots inner-city mission with a dream to saturate every inner city with diverse Hope-filled churches. He also leads and owns Village Social & Village Detailing. Myron is also the founder of Shift Omaha, a North Omaha entrepreneurship incubator that exists to shift 10% of North Omaha into an entrepreneurial mindset. In this edition of Fresh Hope for Mental Health, Pastor Brad interviews Ms. Candace Hoyt-Gregory, C.E.O. of the Open Door Mission in Omaha, Nebraska.  Candice gives helpful insight into mental health issues that the homeless face as well as just the compassion and mercy that is needed when ministering to hurting, hopeless and homeless people. This interview is very insightful for the Church at large and caregivers regarding hopelessness.  But, there’s a LOT of encouragement also for those who are hurting and feeling hopeless.  No matter where you are “at” today, you’ll get a lot from this interview. Candace Gregory is President/CEO of Open Door Mission in Omaha, Nebraska. Since joining the Mission as a case manager in 1995, Ms. Gregory has also served as Director of Family Ministries, Director of Lydia House and Family Ministries, and Chief Operating Officer. Born and raised in New Brunswick, Canada, Candace is a graduate of Lower Coverdale Christian Academy, Bethany Bible College, New Brunswick Community College, and Grace University with a degree in Human Development and Family Studies. In 2004, Candace received an honorary doctorate from Clarkson College of Sciences in Humanitarian Services Prior to her entry in the social service and family ministry profession, Candace was a successful businesswoman who launched and managed family-owned pizza restaurants in Canada. She is a devoted wife and mother, residing in Iowa with her husband Steve and their four children. Ms. Gregory has more than 20 years of experience in children and family ministries. She has become a noted national advocate for the homeless and is sought out for her experience in implementing community prevention programs that help end the cycle of homelessness and poverty.  Ms. Gregory is a seasoned community relations builder, having acquired partnerships with Omaha businesses and service organizations. Recently, I received in my office at Grace University a single sheet entitled ?The Heartland Proclamation? by the Heartland Clergy for Inclusion. In part, this sheet read, ?As Christian clergy we proclaim the Good News concerning Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) persons and publicly apologize where we have been silent.
