Watch the Q&A session here:  https://youtu.be/cjJSWgvHZKwThis lecture puts forth the ethical and economic case for a basic income, enabling financial security and therefore a better quality of life for all. Financial insecurity affects one's ability to make rational decisions – studies show it even lowers short-term IQ – making it even harder to improve one's circumstances in the long run. Furthermore, unlike means-tested social assistance schemes like Universal Credit, a basic income does not involve a severe ‘poverty trap' and thus, contrary to critics, increases the incentive to take low-paying jobs. This lecture includes findings from a series of BI pilots across the world which Dr Standing has been involved in.This lecture was recorded by Guy Standing on 19th March 2025 at Barnard's Inn Hall, London.Guy Standing is a Professorial Research Associate and former Professor of Development Studies at SOAS University of London. From August 2006 until January 2013, he was Professor of Economic Security at the University of Bath in the UK. His most recent books are The Politics of Time: Gaining Control in the Age of Uncertainty (2023), The Blue Commons: Rescuing the Economy of the Sea (2022), Battling Eight Giants: Basic Income Now (2020) and Plunder of the Commons: A Manifesto for Sharing Public Wealth (2019).The transcript of the lecture is available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/case-basic-incomeGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. Eye-opening discussion with Guy Standing on the deteriorating conditions in our oceans…  the destruction of fragile ocean ecosystems, marine pollution, habitat destruction and destruction of coastal communities, driven by overfishing, corporate exploitation, lax regulatory enforcement, increasing extraction-- and growing sea commodification. His analysis is a powerful indictment of contemporary oceanic governance—and an impassioned call for new forms of ocean governance centred around the commons. First aired in August 2022. Guy Standing is a Professorial Research Associate at SOAS University of London and a founding member and honorary co-president of the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN), a non-governmental organisation that promotes a basic income for all. Guy Standing, economist and author, looks at the current economic system and its impact on labour and society as a whole. Standing is a campaigning economist responsible for some of the most innovative solutions to inequality of recent times and he calls on us to wake up to the threat posed by capitalism's violent policies for extraction, exploitation and depletion of that which is both common to us all, but also vital to our survival. Austerity and neoliberal policies have depleted our shared commons - this plunder depriving us all of our centuries-old common rights to share fairly and equitably in our public wealth. Standing also looks at the increasingly global phenomenon of the Precariat and the rise of political extremism - and offers solutions, including the potential of a Universal Basic Income system as a tool for tackling inequality, climate change, and authoritarian populism. Guy Standing is a Professorial Research Associate and former Professor of Development Studies at SOAS University of London. His latest book is “The Blue Commons” in which he focuses on the economy of the sea and how it can provide solutions to economic inequality. He is also the author of "The Precariat” - the hugely influential first account of an increasingly global phenomenon where an emerging class of people faces insecurity, moving in and out of precarious work that gives little meaning to their lives. To help restore marine ecosystems and coastal fishing communities, Standing proposes a detailed 'Blue Commons' agenda that relies on commoning, commons-based legal regimes, and stakeholder trusts.

Welcome to episode of 108 of Activist #MMT. Today I talk with Wesley Wiles about the false historical modes of production and how they relate to MMT. The primary source of this information is the 700 page 2021 book, : A New History of Humanity by the late anthropologist David Graeber and archaeologist David Wengrow. Essentially, Graber and Wengrow reject the myth that, as civilization becomes larger and more complex, it must necessarily also become more unequal. This myth, and its false modes of production, asserts that ever-increasing inequality is "unfortunate but necessary". In the same vein, mainstream economics' assertion that a federal deficit is always bad, a balanced budget always better, and a surplus always best; means that the government's budget position is more important than the real-world condition of millions of human beings. This in turn implies that austerity, too, is "unfortunate but necessary". The truth is that the only reason inequality or austerity is "unfortunate but necessary", is if we choose for it to be that way. We can choose differently. The real challenge is to stand up to those who benefit greatly from these things not changing. Because in both of these cases, it's a matter of life and death, for us as individuals and as a human species. Wesley's provided some other valuable video lectures and panels, links to which you can find in the show notes. They include a on the book The Dawn of Everything, with Wengrow, Stephanie Kelton, and others. There's also an excellent on rentier capitalism with Graeber, Guy Standing, and Michael Hudson, filmed only days before Graeber's untimely death. And now, onto my conversation with Wesley Wiles. The concept of a Universal Basic Income (UBI) has been growing in popularity so I decided to explore it for a recent research project. I began as a sceptic but after considering a variety of social justice arguments I now believe a UBI should be an policy goal for societies who wish to reduce inequality and achiever greater social justice.  But UBI is not just about helping those worst off, it can benefit everyone in a range of ways which we explore in this episode. In this episode we consider the limits of wealth distribution in society, inherent inequalities to life and the role of luck. We also explore the economic ideas of the commons and public goods and the role these play in free market and state capitalist societies. We also take a look at the social protection floor and why it is often conceptualised by society as something to be ashamed of. This leads us to consider the tight coupling of labour and income and the subsequent vulnerability of those without a job or in casual work, a class known as the precariat. All of this leads us to question social justice in wealth distribution and ask the question; could be another way to smooth the edges of income precarity?Show notesInequality in nature and society – Scheffer et al. 2017Iron & steel industry in Middlesbrough's historyTeesside Steel Works - WikipediaPlunder of the commons – Guy StandingWe're all state capitalists now – Niall Ferguson, Foreign PolicyThe Precariat: A dangerous new class – Guy StandingThe Here and Now Podcast on FacebookThe Here and Now Podcast on TwitterSend me an emailSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/thehereandnowpodcast)

This, without them ever knowing that the legs or the tusks that they feel are but one small part of this mammoth beast. Where else have we seen this phenomenon? We all love talking about how we see the world. And we are always convinced that how we see it makes sense. But does it? Or, to really think about it, do we really see it? Or are we always just groping in the dark? Niraj and Osho bring a podcast where they share new ideas that are hidden within echo chambers, algorithmic blindspots, or simply highlight anomalies in plain sight. We are at a pivot moment in history. The choices we make today could determine the fate of future generations. Coronavirus has been correctly recognised as a giant wake up call to the realities of a failing system. Without question huge opportunities exist to catalyse positive change. But what comes next might well be worse: a much more authoritarian system, with huge inequalities protected by the state and legitimised by political nationalism. In this podcast hosts Zoe Williams and Luke Cooper talk to writer, academic and campaigner for universal basic income, Guy Standing, about his analysis of 'rentier capitalism' and the threat it represents to 'the commons'. He tells the story of the 'free market' myth. At every stage in the development of the system often referred to as 'neoliberalism', state intervention has been mobilised to protect the interests of the hyper wealthy minority.  It's time for change. But how? Find out in a great discussion.  This podcast is part of an on-going collaboration between the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung and Another Europe Is Possible.

Experts predict that automation and AI will lead to massive job losses, and the growth of the “gig” economy is creating unstable jobs, with increased demands on flexibility and efficiency. Temporary positions create income insecurity for workers, and there will be a need to update skills and knowledge continuously. In such a situation, basic income may become a critical element of future work life.
