Expectations of the office have changed. That typical dreary, depressing office block with uniform cubicles - who wants to go there? No one. So who's out there, trying to change that? My guest is Gaby Hersham, the co-founder of Huckletree, a network of community-driven and design-led workspaces which aims to challenge the typical workspace model. She believes that a well-designed workspace can profoundly impact your work and mindset for the better. Gaby tells me about conceptualising Huckletree, leading a physical office business through COVID-19, and the future of flexible spaces. We discuss why working from the office is beneficial in helping with innovation, creativity and productivity, and she shares her thoughts on why your colleagues shouldn't be like family, as well as balancing work and family life, and overcoming “mum guilt”. Gaby also sheds light on the unique struggles women entrepreneurs face, and the power of asking for what you want, whether in business or life. Tune in if you're interested in hearing about the potential of flexible workspaces, want to reimagine your approach to work and productivity, or just want to hear a badass woman entrepreneur's story. Huckletree, the flexible workspace providers operating from the Academy building on Pearse Street, Dublin 2, has seen a 35% growth in occupancy rates this year, bringing total levels to 98%. This month Huckletree celebrates its 5th anniversary in its flagship Irish location. Companies including Starling Bank, Tines, NewsWhip and Axonista are part of the Dublin community. The company, which also has five hubs across the UK, first opened its doors in Dublin in late 2017, with founding members Silicon Valley Bank, Kontainers and Datadog. Supported by a network of ambassadors, including Dee Coakley, Pete Townsend, and Edel Coen, it has since been a home to tech start-ups and scale-ups at the forefront of the developments and trends hitting the Irish and international tech scene in recent years. With the global tech industry in a period of transition, Huckletree's mission is proving that it is more important than ever to build a community for innovation. The team has been witness to the transition from pandemic-enforced remote working to flexible and hybrid models, and believes that it is clear that the desire to gather together has driven this. “The tech industry is no stranger to change and external pressures and there's no denying that we are moving into a period of uncertainty. Sustainable, steady growth must be the key focus for tech companies going forward. Now more than ever, shared workspaces and communities like ours should be spaces where people can gather to seek advice, guidance, pivot, innovate and navigate this period together. We really believe in strength in numbers, and the power of network,” says Andrew Lynch, co-founder and board member of Huckletree. As part of celebrations to commemorate five years in business, Huckletree are bringing the Dublin tech community together as part of ‘The Great Gathering', a campaign that celebrates the importance of gathering with purpose, with a series of events throughout the month of November. In addition, Huckletree has released The Great Gathering Zine, a playbook for business leaders, creatives and entrepreneurs. As demand for traditional office space continues to shift, with a move towards flexibility and options that prioritise employee experience, shared workspaces and communities like Huckletree have been at the forefront of this evolution. “People are looking for interesting opportunities that support their learning and development, and spontaneous moments that harness their creativity at work. We spend a lot of time designing our events and experiences at Huckletree across our hubs, researching topics that will resonate with our members and spark lively debate and meaningful conversation,” commented Aislinn Mahon, Head of Ecosystems at Huckletree. As growth in the Pearse Street space continues, Huckletree are now looking to find new locations for more spaces across Dublin in the next few years. Areas of interest include Dublin 2 and Dublin 8, where Huckletree has already identified potential opportunities. See more stories here. Huckletree, Ireland and the UK's leading independent workspace brand, have announced their impressive lineup of influential minds set to lead the annual Earthrise Summit on 28th September. The event, in partnership with CMS, Silicon Valley Bank and Replenish Earth, will be run in a hybrid model both online and in-person, hails over 50 world-renowned visionaries from Dublin, London, Berlin, Copenhagen and New York. In 2021, Earthrise Summit was host to over 1,000 start-up founders and operators as well as investors and VC's. The Summit's mission is to bring together the most innovative, exciting, mission-led brands and funds to drive tangible impact for a better, more sustainable and equitable future. The theme of this year's Earthrise Summit is Urban Futures. Currently 55% of the world's population is now living in urban areas and the UN predicts this number will rise to 68% by 2050. The Earthrise Summit will put a specific focus on the ways in which we can use our urban centres and cities to support a more sustainable future. The keynote speaker will be the world-renowned Jan Gehl, a Danish architect and urban design consultant whose life work has centred around reorienting our cities for pedestrians and cyclists and his work has transformed the very fabric of urban spaces worldwide. Previous headliners included model and actress turned activist and social entrepreneur, Lily Cole, and Oscar winning filmmaker, athlete and photographer, Jimmy Chin. Jan is credited with bringing about some of the most successful urban planning transformations in history, and through educating the world of urban design on the intrinsically linked value between well-planned and used public spaces and liveable cities. He has worked across the globe with governments of all sizes and ambitions to remodel city centres where public realms were at best an afterthought and at worst actively shunned. “Sustainability is at the forefront of discourse, and that is where it needs to be – we are delighted at Huckletree to be able to bring some of the best minds available together and have these important conversations. These messages need a platform – and I am excited for Huckletree to be that stage for Earthrise Summit 2022,” commented Andrew Lynch, COO & co-founder of Huckletree. “This year's Earthrise Summit is a call to the industry to rethink how we better build cities for tomorrow, from today, and to galvanise some of the most influential people in the urban planning industry, from developers to creatives. I am so thrilled that Huckletree is in a position to bring an event like Earthrise Summit to life and to bring it to so many people in our industry across the world. The data shows – we are at a crucial tipping point- and I believe we all have a role to play in ensuring our urban centres focus around both people and sustainability,” added Gaby Hersham, CEO & co-founder of Huckletree. “CMS is delighted to partner with Huckletree to bring the Earthrise Summit and its messages to the fore in 2022. Having sustainability at the heart of urban planning and development is the only way our cities will adapt to tackle the climate crisis head on. We believe the Earthrise Summit will bring together people with the vision required to enact the changes we all want to see,”Anthony Waller, Partner at CMS, commented. According to a recent staff memo circulating across social media, Elon Musk recently made his stance on hybrid working clear, demanding the end of remote working for all Tesla employees or else they would face termination. As employees make decisions to return to the office there has been global concern that the gender imbalance will be stretched further. The permanent switch to more home working following the pandemic will cause an increase in inclusivity issues within the workplace, according to experts, unless employers carefully monitor their new working policies to make sure everyone's performance is recognised equally regardless of whether they work from the office or not. There is a fear that those who receive more “face time” with management will benefit from more recognition and preferential treatment. Ronan talks to Aislinn Mahon, General Manager of Huckletree D2 about this and more. Aislinn talks about her background, Elon Musk's stance on hybrid working, the positives of co-working spaces, Zoom meetings, mental health and meditation. Aislinn also talks about the different types of companies based in Huckltree, the help companies can get in co-working spaces, and the best strategy that works for companies. More about Aislinn: Aislinn is expert in new market entry and identifying new opportunities for strategic growth, and helped launch Huckletree in Ireland in 2017. She's also deeply passionate about the practice and teaching of yoga. Superpower: Building inner confidence.
In the latest episode of PropCast, Gabriela Hersham, David Hutton, and Alistair Subba Row speak to Blackstock Consulting's Andrew Teacher about how the events of the last two years have caused a shift in priorities in the office sector.
Late last year I interviewed Andrew Lynch the Co-founder and COO of Huckletree, and since then a lot has happened. Businesses are opening up again and the hybrid working model has been embraced as the government introduced new remote working regulations and got rid of all the Covid restrictions they had in place. As we get back to some form of normality in the workplace what can we expect. I talk to Andrew about this and more. Andrew talks to me about the new government remote working regulations, pandemic related issues, job enjoyment, tech predictions for the year, startup funding and sustainability. More about Andrew Lynch: Andrew moved back from the UK last year, where he did a master's degree in real-estate investment, before working in private equity and then co-founding Huckletree. During that time Huckletree has opened 5 co-working spaces in the UK and one in Ireland. Andrew has seen companies join Huckletree Ireland as start-ups and grow and expand and, as they take on investment, grow very quickly to 30 or 40 people. The Dublin space brings its global member count to 2,000 people.

On this episode of Tech Talk Radio, EG head of content Emily Wright speaks to Insurami chief executive and founder Majed Chaaraoui and head of partnerships Jack Sibley. Launched in 2019, Insurami effectively operates as a large-scale Deposit Guarantee platform for commercial real estate and is currently used by companies including The Howard De Walden Estate, Level39 and Huckletree. Rather than forking out a hefty deposit in one go, tenants pay a monthly fee to the platform for a Deposit Guarantee. This then pays out to the landlord – up to the maximum cover value of £600,000 – if there is a default on the lease. Off the back of last month's announcement that Fasanara Capital has joined existing investors including Global Founders Capital, Entrepreneur First and Clocktower Ventures in a £42m raise to facilitate Insurami's expansion, the duo reveal what those growth plans will entail. They also explain why they believe their tech solution will release billions of pounds worth of otherwise illiquid funds caught up within the real estate sector.

On today’s episode, I’m chatting with founder and CEO of Huckletree, a company building co-working hubs and communities across the UK and Ireland. Growing up in an entrepreneurial household, this week’s guest knew from an early age what it would take to create a successful business. However, despite studying the subject at university, it was the world of film that first caught her eye for which she moved to New York to pursue. Coming to the realisation that becoming a working actress was perhaps an unrealistic career for the ambitious entrepreneur, she decided to leave it and the city behind and pick up her life back in London. She didn’t return from America with nothing though, as during her time there she discovered the concept of co-working and had an idea brewing ever since. Enlisting the help of her co-founder once settled back in the UK, she set to work drawing up plans for what would soon become Huckletree, her very own collection of co-working spaces with an emphasis on supporting innovation and cultivating communities. Sharing how she did it and everything in between, here’s what it’s like to be Gabriela Hersham. To see what Huckletree has to offer, visit https://www.huckletree.com and keep up to date with them on social media @huckletree Follow Gabriela on social media @gabrielahersham
Hospitality covers a multitude of things. The rise and rise of co-working fits firmly within that scope. We were lucky enough to get some time with Ben Swindells, Expansion Director for Huckletree (www.huckletree.com) a London based workspace accelerator with locations in London, Manchester and Dublin. Ben is an ex hotelier and now workspace specialist and is responsible for the growth and new projects for Huckletree. In 2019 Ben led the group to double growth in terms of footprint and members launching 4 new sites in 12 months. Even though I mispronounced his name within the first 10 seconds, Ben recovered to tell his story beautifully. We cover off gems such as Being thrust in at the deep end, events, F&B Projects, The 2012 Olympics, the check in process, Co-Working (Of course), The Shoreditch Buzz, fast growth business, finding your calling, career leaps of faith and much more. As a female and a mum, Gabriela faced backlash when launching but despite that pushed through the negativity and is on the way to achieving something quite incredible - Get ready to be Inspired.
