Reading, reading, reading. It's so important! - But lots of us, including this podcaster, in the past at least, don't like to read. - So why don't boys like to read? What is the reason behind this and how can we change this? - Generally the stigma says that men and boys hate reading because they find books boring compared to computer games and other more active things. Kimberlie from @phrasedllc even tells us, though, that despite being a very active boy, her son will still be able to tell her everything she has read word for word. Impressive stuff! - But this does not mean that boys are actually not interested, it's just the way boys are! - Unfortunately boys of BAME (Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic) backgrounds will suffer even more than other boys. - Nevertheless, we need to ask the question of what we can do. - Let your boys be active while reading, let them pick something else up while you're reading, because they are just processing information in their own way. - So, next time you pick up a book and start reading, enjoy reading, because your kids, even boys, are enjoying it just as much as you are!

Reading is so important, especially when learning a language. - But what is it about reading that boys do not like? Kimberlie from @phrasedllc tells us about the reasons why boys do not like reading. - The biggest stigma that we see is that girls believe that reading is meant for them, whereas boys think it is something that is uncool. We also hear from Kimberlie that the typical stereotype for boys is to be loud and productive, whereas we believe reading is something we need to do quietly. - So what can we do to get boys to fall in love with books? Reading books doesn't necessarily have to be 'reading a book', per se. We can put an audiobook on, while we're in the car, we could even deliberately leave books in a trail and see which books are picked up. - Why not tune into this eye-opening episode and find out how you can help your children fall in love with books!

But Why: A Podcast for Curious Kids

What makes a cactus a cactus? And what are you supposed to call a group of these plants--cacti, cactuses, or cactus?! We'll find out in today's episode, as we learn more about the cactus family with Kimberlie McCue of the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona. She'll answer kid questions about why cactuses are spiky and how they got those spikes, as well as why teddy bear cactuses aren't actually cuddly! Those prickly spines that are so characteristic of the cactus family are actually modified leaves! Cactuses don't have the kind of leaves like a maple or oak tree. But they might have had leaves that were at least a little more like that way way back in the past. Over time, those leaves evolved into the spiky spines we see on cactuses today because they help the plants survive in hot, dry environments. Why are cactuses spiky? -Noah, Iowa "They can be a defense mechanism to discourage herbivores - animals that eat plants - from eating the cactus. But, also, spines create shade!" explains Kimberlie McCue. "When you're covered in spines, as the sun moves across the sky, those spines are casting shadows on the body of the cactus. They're little shade umbrellas!" All cactuses are native to desert environments, and some live in places where it never rains at all. So how do they get water to survive? Well, Kimberlie tells us that these plants grow not too far from the ocean. "Early in the morning, there will be fog that comes off the water. Those spines provide a place for the water to condense, form little droplets of water that run down the spine, to the body of the plant, down to the ground and to the roots." Cactuses are also extremely important parts of their desert environments, as they hold soil in place and provide shelter for birds and other animals. Those insects and birds in turn help pollinate the cactus flowers. Cactuses are also an important local food source for humans. Unfortunately, cactuses are in danger from people who poach (illegally take) wild plants from their environment. Kimberlie McCue says one way to help make sure cacti stay healthy and plentiful is to be careful when you buy cactus plants. Check to see where the plant seller got the cactus and make sure they're taking care to be ethical stewards of these plants before you buy.

Think about how many plants there are: hundreds of thousands of different species. Yet when you look at plant-based meats, nearly all are made of one or more of just three of those plant species: soy, wheat, and pea. And there’s good reason for it: those plants are relatively cheap and plentiful, they taste good, and they function quite well as alt-meats under certain conditions that have been studied at length.  But what if it were possible to make meat alternatives with a different species than one of those three? In fact, a species so different it’s not even a plant at all. That’s exactly what Kimberlie Le of Prime Roots is doing. Instead of seeking to build a supply chain for a new kind of plant protein, Kim is creating her own supply chain for making animal-free protein, brewing a fungus called Aspergillus oryzae into whole food meat alternatives. For those of you not familiar, fungi are not plants nor are they animals: they’re an entirely different kingdom of organisms. We typically associate fungi with mushrooms, but mushrooms are just the fruiting body of a fungus, kind of like an apple on a tree. And in fact, most fungal species don’t even produce mushrooms anyway. But back to aspergillus: It’s also known as koji, and humans have been enjoying this particular fungus for centuries in the form of soy sauce, miso, sake, and more. But rather than using it as a processing aid, Kim’s start-up Prime Roots is simply using fermentation to collect the biomass of the fungus itself and turning it into animal-free meat.  As you’ll hear, the idea for the company came to Kim while in a college course. Three years later, she’s now raised millions of dollars, is operating a 12,000 square foot production facility, and has already released a flagship product, bacon made from koji. So enjoy this wide-ranging conversation with an entrepreneur who’s betting that the next big thing in plant-based meat isn’t going to be plants at all. If Kim has her way, just maybe the next big trend among advocates for local, artisanal protein won’t be farm to table, but rather will be fermenter to table, with Prime Roots brewing the way forward.  Discussed in this episode: Prime Roots job openings Rebellyous Foods CEO Christie Lagally’s thoughts on plant-based meat industry Paul’s thoughts on just how much alt-meat is out there.
