Offensive lineman Germain Ifedi and kicker Eddy Pineiro join hosts Jeff Joniak, Tom Thayer and Jim Miller on Bears All Access.
It is super instructive to hear about payments evolution. So, it’s time to take a trip. In this Payments on Fire® episode we speak with Charles Ifedi, one of the founders of Interswitch, one of the leading digital payments providers in Nigeria, and founder of customer engagement platform company eBanqo. We hear a lot - and deservedly so - about innovative fintech companies but we hear very little about the advanced and highly competitive payment system already in place in Nigeria. Take a listen as Glenbrook partner Elizabeth McQuerry, partner in charge of Glenbrook’s Global payments consulting practice, talks with Charles about the Nigerian payments ecosystem, his role in developing one of the leading payments providers there and and his new venture in improving the front end of financial services with conversational AI . Payments in Nigeria are huge in every way. Its large population – some 200 million – allows digital payments to thrive even as the banked population remains stubbornly low at just under 40% of the adult population. Unlike the eastern Africa experience of telco-led companies like M-PESA, Nigerian telcos are not allowed to serve as payments providers. They aren’t banks but their agent networks serve an essential role in last mile service delivery. That said, recent regulatory changes are allowing partner companies of these telcos to apply for the country’s payments services bank license. Nigerians have been able to take advantage of instant or real-time payments for a decade. You can’t say that for Americans. It’s quite common to see people making instant payments transfers from their mobile devices via the simple USSD menu interface on feature phones. Those with smartphones take full advantage of app-based interfaces. These instant payments are often used to buy things in retail shops as well as to make business or personal transfers. Payment by debit and credit card is also quite common and Nigeria is home to Verve, the pan-African card brand. Listen in as Charles, who was Verve’s first CEO, reflects on developing the Interswitch brand and discusses how Nigerians are making payments at small and large merchants during the Covid-19 lockdown, the successes of ATMs and their challenges to growth, the failure of biometrics, and about the Nigerian payments ecosystem overall.

About two weeks into free agency, the Seahawks have been relatively active in making moves particularly on the offensive line. Field Gulls contributor John P. Gilbert joins the show as we wait to see what comes of the salary cap if Jadeveon Clowney re-signs with the Seahawks. Where do the Seahawks currently stand? Could they still manage to sign Clowney and another pass rusher considering the relatively small amount of cap space they seem to have. What moves could we expect to see Seattle make in the coming weeks if they need to free up salary cap space? John talks about the departure of Germain Ifedi and how he was surprised at Ifedi's inability to land a deal in the range of George Fant and how he'll now be playing guard for the Chicago Bears instead of tackle. On Thursday, the NFL also announced that the 2020 draft will go on with the originally scheduled dates, but in a different format. The limitations on teams will be an interesting case study for future years on how they were able to scout and interact with players leading up to this year's draft. Could we see a seven-day long NFL Draft? Adam Schefter is suggesting it, and with nothing else going on in the sports world, it's not a bad idea. It's incredible how things have changed in just the short time since our last episode. As we all deal with some of the many changes that we're working through, it's fun to take some time and think about things like Seahawks football. So with NFL free agency moving on as scheduled, the Seahawks are focusing primarily on the offensive line while adding a veteran pass rusher as Bruce Irvin returns to the Seahawks. Along the defensive line Jarran Reed returns to Seattle while Quinton Jefferson finds a new home in Buffalo. As Germaine Ifedi looks to make upwards of $10 million per season, John Schneider seems to have found a right tackle from the Jets who compares to Ifedi with one-third of the penalties. Jadeveon Clowney is still looking for a big time contract, too, but is time running out for him to make a deal? Seattle seems to have an inside track the longer we wait. Fan favorite Luke Wilson is also back with the team. Around the NFC West we look at some of the other major deals as DeAndre Hopkins is now going to be paired with Larry Fitzgerald in Arizona. We break down how the Texans made one of the worst moves in history by accepting a trade that included David Johnson, which may be even more help to the Cardinals by allowing them to clear out cap space. The Rams find themselves in a tough spot with Jared Goff now counting more toward the salary cap than any other quarterback in the NFL. Is Jadeveon Clowney's value dropping because teams can't get physicals done? We discuss with The News Tribune's Gregg Bell. Matthew Fairburn, covering the Bills for The Athletic updates us on all that has happened in Buffalo this week. Softy weighs in on the downfall of the Rams, and other offseason thoughts.
The first big news of the offseason hit on Tuesday this week as the Seahawks announced that they had agreed to terms with former Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen. While Seattle was in the market for a tight end this offseason considering the problems they had with depth at the position, is paying a 35-year-old the best approach. Brandan and Adam discuss the pros and cons of the situation and why the team could have felt that this was the best move to make. In the division, we saw what average tackles are going to start making as D.J. Humphries was re-signed by the Arizona Cardinals. That means that Germaine Ifedi is likely to move on. Could George Fant take Ifedi's spot or is Fant set on heading out of town so he can play at the left tackle spot? Reports of Jadeveon Clowney ran rampant this past week, but as we point out on the show this week, that when you visit the source material behind the story, the thing that sparked the issue is relatively benign. Of course Clowney wants the best deal possible. That's what every player wants in the offseason! We close out the show this week by talking about the Seattle Dragons and their first win at home. CenturyLink Field has decided they don't want to take cash at the stadium anymore, which earns the Seahawks home field a "do better" call out. For just the 12th time in franchise history, the Seattle Seahawks have now won 10 or more games. Russell Wilson has helped to make that happen as he has been the quarterback for 7 of those 12 double digit winning seasons. The latest 10 win season comes after a 37-30 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Although the Seahawks were down at halftime, it was clear the defense had Cousins, Cook and Diggs bottled up in the first half outside of the first and last drives of the first half. A huge third quarter propelled Seattle to a three-score lead in the fourth quarter, but as we've learned to expect, no lead is ever safe. Looking ahead to the Sunday Night Football game against the Rams, Seattle will look to continue their 3-0 prime time streak, Carroll's streak of undefeated games in prime time in December, and Pete's next win has a chance to be his 100th victory on a field that helped propel him back into the NFL as the coach for the Seahawks. To get the win the Seahawks will have to find a way to keep Aaron Donald in check, put pressure on Jared Goff and deal with a new piece of the Rams puzzle with Jalen Ramsey now at corner. Closing out the first half of the show, we discuss the injury that Jadeveon Clowney is dealing with and somewhat recent context of what Marshawn Lynch went through at the end of the 2015 season. It may be an injury that Clowney will decide to fight through until the offseason. In the second half of the show, we talk more about how the playoff picture is shaping up for the Seahawks. We also congratulate those who have won the last few weeks in the pick'em. Week 10 - Playoff Bound just Locket In - Week 10 standings Week 11 - Colchester Hawk - Week 11 standings Week 12 - Piggie0072 - Week 12 standings Week 13 - Ifedi’s Gentle Shoves - Week 13 standings Do better nominees this week are for power rankings who consistently have the Seahawks at the bottom of the list of 10-2 teams in the NFL because of score differential and O.J. Two in a week?! TWO in a week, with our Apple Cup preview with you already, here we bring our standard, usual, merry mix of banter and bad takes as we look back on the W in Philly, why it was a weird day for a few reasons and why things change in a few months. Then we preview the imminent, or is it too far away MNF showcase against the Vikings and their scary weaponry on offense, names to hurt us on defense and why a win could change some things. The usual spin in the bin, a nod to the Cougs and how maybe Ifedi's issues for some could be a sign of genius. Enjoy! Go Hawks
Well, that was..something. The guys go over everything and anything that happened on Monday night against the 49ers and try their best to figure it all out. From Russ, to Ifedi, to Carson to that man Clowney. All of it is covered and enjoyed, we think? We then go over where this team stands at their bye week and how it looks for January football. Plus a spin in the bin, how the Rams week is both good & bad, POV dependent and much more! Enjoy & GO HAWKS!

In the biggest news of the day, first round pick L.J. Collier suffered a high ankle sprain with the team in full pads for the first time. Is the news that long snapper Tyler Ott signing an extension enough positive news to offset the disappointment? Duane Brown offered his perspective on the injury and his feelings toward seeing injuries in training camp. Brown talks about the amount of talent Seattle has on the offensive line this year and how he thinks they can be one of the best units in the league. He also think Ifedi is poised to make a jump in his fourth year in the league. Ugo Amadi talks about how he's feeling so far with trying to learn a number of different positions and how he's leaving it to the coaches to decide where he'll be the best fit. Finally, Brian Schneider talks about the special teams unit this year, how Michael Dickson wants to be the best at his position and the difference in competition from last year's training camp to how things are shaping up in 2019. With a postseason spot already clinched, the Seahawks took fans on a ride that seemed to be reminiscent of past memories. From a player wearing number 83 getting knocked down as a slant pass was intercepted, to abandoning the run in the way they did early this season, it brought back some bad memories. Ross Bell of the UK Sea Hawkers joins Brandan to talk about why, against the Cardinals, the Seahawks seem to refuse to win pretty. The last time a matchup between these two teams was decided by more than a touchdown was a 36-6 victory in Arizona. But the Seahawks finally get a win at home, 27-24, against an Arizona team that had won three straight times at CenturyLink. With their two starting guards out, Seattle moved Ifedi into guard and put George Fant at right tackle for the second straight game. It didn't go well as Wilson was sacked six times. Protecting the punter was also a problem as one punt was blocked for a touchdown and another was partially blocked. After back-to-back drives to start the half were unsuccessful following three straight pass plays, Seattle was backed up on the two-yard line to start their third drive. It looked like another turnover would go into the end zone for a touchdown until a holding call on the Cardinals defense gave Seattle new life. Chris Carson broke his biggest run of the season going 61 yards downfield and Mike Davis finished off the drive with a 17-yard run into the end zone. The Cardinals continued to fight back, but Russell Wilson put together another one of his fourth quarter game-winning drives and Janikowski kicked the game winner (something Blair Walsh couldn't manage last season).
We start the show with some frustrating news that keeps cropping up in social media with fake player news coming fast and furious this week. Adam and Brandan look back and some of the biggest highlights from the win over the Cowboys. Going through some of the stats from the game, Russell Wilson has been getting the ball out faster from a statistical perspective, but Adam isn't buying that anything has changed apart from him having more protection and plays that don't require as much time to develop. Part of the protection includes the return of D.J. Fluker and he showed an impact in the game this week and Ifedi was able to have a solid game as well only giving up three pressures on the day. Russell Wilson is getting more freedom to control the tempo of the game and one example was the Seahawks first touchdown to Jaron Brown to put the Seahawks on the board in the first half. The Seahawks go back on the road this week for the third time in four games, but to a road location that has been historically favorable in Arizona. The Cardinals are starting their rookie quarterback for the first time this week. Had Arizona actually put Josh Rosen into the game sooner against the Bears this past weekend, they likely would have beat Chicago, because Sam Bradford was awful. He was able to take advantage of some early mistakes last weekend and then the Bears defense shut them down. If you're going to the game be sure to check out the Seahawks Road Crew page for the Sea Hawkers gathering down in Arizona. Check out seahawkerspodcast.com/tickets if you need tickets for the game. Hopefully the 12s will continue to show up on the road in that stadium. In the pickem league, the guys go over the latest standings, and even in a week where there were a lot of surprises, there were people getting double digit wins. One of our pickem league champions emails in to challenge Adam about his gameday attire to suggest it may also be considered of the hobo variety. Closing out the show with do better, Adam looks at some of the latest USA Today power rankings. Brandan calls out some flopping quarterbacks and that leads to a discussion of a foolproof gamepan to take advantage of how the referees are calling penalties. Better at life honors this week go to the Mars rover and to this week's 12 flag raiser Kam Chancellor. Alex Marvez discusses the Monday Nighter in Chicago, Jon Gruden in Oakland, and whether Moj will play more than Johnny Manziel Friday night in Montreal
With the Seahawks starters seeing the most action of the preseason, Seattle led 13-6 by the time Russell Wilson left the game in the third quarter. Two missed kicks by the Vikings rookie kicker helped to keep Seattle in the lead until late in the 4th quarter. But Minnesota was able to score 15 points in the 4th quarter to get the 21-20 lead and a hail mary came up 2-yards short of the goal line as time expired for the Seahawks. Ross Bell fills in for the reaction show this week with Adam on the road for work. Brandan and Ross take a look at some of the biggest plays of the game, including a look at Michael Dickson's first punt after taking over as punter full-time with the departure of Jon Ryan. On the Seahawks second drive of the game, we saw the ball appear to end up in the end zone without Russell throwing the ball. Defensively, the Seahawks consistently shut down the run and took away the deep part of the field to make Cousins routinely check down. Offensively, David Moore continued to look like he will contribute this season hauling in a touchdown from Alex McGough. Chris Carson and Mike Davis shared the load at running back with the starters. On the line, Fant came in for Ifedi at right tackle in the second quarter, and both appeared to be serviceable at the spot. On defense, Tedric Thompson and Quinton Jefferson looked to be gaining confidence along with Shaquill Griffin who matched up well with Stefon Diggs. Closing out the show, Better at Life this week is the tight end group who have come up with an interesting fine structure that includes a reference to the movie Napoleon Dynamite. Perhaps the most beloved punter in all of Seahawks history was released from the team this week. We talk about how Jon Ryan spent his day after learning he was cut from the team and how his new team is probably the best possible outcome for all involved. Adam and Brandan look back to the game against the Chargers at some additional takeaways from the game and how a penalty and a fumble can completely change how you can look at the game. With the game coming up against the Vikings, what is there to watch for on offense and defense? On the offensive side of the ball George Fant is now taking snaps at right tackle. Will he get a chance to start the game or will it be a short leash for Ifedi after his performance against the Chargers? Which players on the interior of the defense could get left out on cutdown day? An injury to another Seahawks running back makes the performance of an often injured back more intriguing. The Seattle Times recently profiled the Seahawks new offensive coordinator and the number 53 came up. No, it wasn't the percentage of hat that he prefers to wear, but the number of pass completions combined with running plays that he believes correlates to NFL wins. The guys look into how the numbers played out last season and if it could lead to a more up tempo style of offense in 2018. In the second half of the show, the guys discuss the helmet rule that hasn't appeared to impact Seahawks games significantly, but has teams and players reacting around the league. In the "don't do meth" portion of the show, be on the look out for a discarded Domino's Pizza sign in the Seattle area. Finally, the reaction in the media to the Jalen Ramsey story has Brandan calling for them to do better, while Adam is ready to pull journalism credentials for anyone continuing to push a very strange trade rumor that involved a future Seahawks draft pick.
