Can art be a tool for repair? And what happens when exhibitions themselves move across borders? In this episode of Our World, Connected, host Christine Wilson dives into the relationship between art, architecture, and place — and how both disciplines are being used to challenge colonial narratives, spark dialogue, and imagine alternative futures.Christine is joined by writer, artist and curator Rosie Olang' Odhiambo, who speaks about her collaborative, cross-disciplinary practice and her recent exhibition, In Transit: Under Another Sky, which she co-curated with E.N. Mirembe. First shown in Kampala and Nairobi, and soon opening at the Africa Centre in London, the exhibition weaves together sound, image, and text to explore transience, marginal identities, and shifting geographies. We also hear from Kabage Karanja, an architect and co-founder of Nairobi's cave_bureau. Speaking from the British Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale, Kabage reflects on using caves as sites of cultural memory and of decolonial storytelling and his bold vision for architecture as a force of geological repair.Together, Rosie and Kabage explore what it means to tell stories of place, migration, and resistance — and how visual arts and architecture can both reflect and reshape the world we live in.Listen to Our World, Connected, brought to you by the British Council. On this podcast, we strive to connect fascinating and successful people to the next generation. But today and throughout March, I'd like to change it up a bit and, in partnership with the Rise initiative, highlight some of the fascinating and successful people of my generation. Throughout this month, I'll be talking with three of the winners of the Rise Challenge from various years. To begin this trilogy, I'll be speaking with Hawi ‘Annette' Odhiamno in honor of international women's day. For her Rise project, she built on an existing project, designing a prototype for a water system to support farming in Kenya. Rise is a program that finds promising young people and provides opportunity for life as they work to serve others. An initiative of Schmidt Futures and the Rhodes Trust, Rise is the anchor program of a $1 billion commitment from Eric and Wendy Schmidt to find and support global talent.Topics:Hawi's project: creating sustainable agriculture for farmers in KenyaHow to learn material outside of your comfort zoneHow Hawi created an instruction manual in both English and SwahiliThe future of her project"What skills did you gain?"How to balance projects and high schoolHawi's advice to other young innovators"What books have had an impact on you?""What advice do you have for teenagers?"From Kenya, Hawi works at the intersection of technology and agriculture. For her Rise project, she built on an existing project, designing a prototype for a water system to support farming in Kenya. Her model uses only recycled materials, and she has involved farmers themselves in its design. She also created instruction booklets for the rural farmers in both English and Swahili (for accessibility). In the future, she hopes to study International Relations and Chinese to create sustainable relations within countries in East Africa.Socials! -Lessons from Interesting People substack: https://taylorbledsoe.substack.com/Website: https://www.aimingforthemoon.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/aiming4moon/Twitter: https://twitter.com/Aiming4MoonFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/aiming4moonTaylor's Blog: https://www.taylorgbledsoe.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6

A., Opot, B., Cheruiyot, A., Yeda, R., Okudo, C., Okoth, R., Campo, J., Wallqvist, A., Akala, H., Ochiel, D., Ogutu, B., Chaudhury, S., Kamau, E. Abstract: The role of humoral immunity on the efficacy of artemisinin combination therapy (ACT) has not been investigated, yet naturally acquired immunity is key determinant of antimalarial therapeutic response. We conducted a therapeutic efficacy study in high transmission settings of western Kenya, which showed artesunate-mefloquine (ASMQ) and dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DP) were more efficacious than artemether-lumefantrine (AL). To investigate the underlying prophylactic mechanism, we compared a broad range of humoral immune responses in cohort I study participants treated with ASMQ or AL, and applied machine-learning (ML) models using immunoprofile data to analyze individual participants treatment outcome. We showed ML models could predict treatment outcome for ASMQ but no AL with high (72-92%) accuracy. Simulated PK profiling provided evidence demonstrating specific humoral immunity confers protection in the presence of sub-therapeutic residual mefloquine concentration. We concluded patient humoral immunity and partner drug interact to provide long prophylactic effect of ASMQ. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info

Hey there word nerds! Today I am delighted to have Dr. Eucabeth Odhiambo on the show! Eucabeth was born in Kenya and her gorgeous middle grade debut novel, Auma’s Long Run,is inspired by her memories growing up there as well as her own work experiences with children and educators affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa.   I read a lot of books for this show and while I’m not supposed to pick any favorites, I have to say it’s not often that a book gets me this excited about the story and the meaning behind it. Listen in as we tease apart the many elements of Auma’s Long Run, and discuss the responsibility that comes along with writing an “own voices” novel.   In this episode Eucabeth and I discuss: Crafting a strong female character young girls anywhere can relate to. Writing a sport centered middle grade novel with a female protagonist. Bringing life to a country and a culture through your characters. Dealing with the fear and responsibility of writing about things others have experienced. How fiction helps in getting over the hurdles of writing an “own voices” novel. Plus, Eucabeth’s #1 tip for writers. For more info and show notes: DIYMFA.com/187

Hawks Playbook Podcast Episode 34 - NY State of Mind Open: Seattle Seahawks Fans, welcome back to the Hawks Playbook Podcast. Join us as we recap the great complete team win in the Big Apple against the NY Giants.   Featured Segment: Seahawks win on the road vs. the Giants Seattle finally has a pretty good complete game. The Seattle Seahawks dominated this game on both sides of the ball and moved the team to an overall record of 4-2. The offensive line played well overall. Odhiambo and Glowinksi allowed only 1 QB pressure each out of 42 attempts. Ethan Pocic did not allow a single pressure on 22 snaps at left guard and center. Seahawks again have the #1 scoring defense in the NFL. Against the Giants the Seahawks allowed 177 total yards and 1 TD, after getting the ball at the Seattle 17 yards line as a result of a Thomas Rawls fumble. Giants had 300 combined rushing yards in previous 2 games. Seahawks allowed 46 yards and zero runs over 9 yards. Seattle’s defense (outside of Titan’s game) has allowed 12.2 PPG and 281.4 YPG. They have not allowed more than 18 points scored against them in the other 5 games. Featured Segment 2: Game Preview – Seattle Seahawks vs the Houston Texans. The Texan’s come into the matchup with a record of 3-3 and 3rd place in the AFC South. The Texans have wins against the Bengals, Titans and Browns and losses against the Jaguars, Patriots and the Chiefs.   The team is led by rooking phenom Deshaun Watson, the 12th overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft. Watson has plenty of playmakers around him but an OL almost as bad as Seattle's.   Seattle’s offense can’t expect to face a stout run defense led by Merceilus, Clowney and McKinney. They also have a playmaker at middle linebacker in rookie, Zach Cunningham.

168: Russell Wilson continues preseason domination with Odhiambo at left tackle, decisions ahead with the 53-man roster

The Seahawks pick up another preseason victory, 26-13 over the Kansas City Chiefs, as the Legion of Boom holds Alex Smith under 50 yards and the offense to only 3 points. Russell Wilson has looked incredible as he dials in his game this pre-season. Explosive plays to Jermaine Kearse, Chris Carson and Jimmy Graham were a big part of his 200-yard effort. Part of the reason for his success was the fact that he was given time to throw behind an offensive line that, now with Rees Odhiambo at left tackle, looks like it may not have been impacted by the injury to George Fant. Despite Procise and Rawls sitting out another preseason game, the running game impressed with Eddie Lacy and Chris Carson. The guys talk about what that means for Alex Collins and some of the other backs on the roster. With most of the starters likely sitting out against the Raiders this week, Adam and Brandan look ahead to that game with the idea of who they want to see to help make some of the tough decisions with the 53-man roster.  They also discuss how some contract maneuvering and depth at running back could leave fullback Marcel Reece off the initial cut only to be brought back after Week 1. In the second half of the show, the guys wonder what some of the foods are that you wouldn't want to drink beer with.  Brandan questions Adam's prediction of Rees Odhiambo for the Pro Bowl and why that's what he's choosing to root for this year. The guys discuss an email that has a listener infuriated over Russell Wilson's placement on a recent list. Finally, Do Better nods to go to some uninformative coverage from ESPN regarding the uptick in demonstrations during the National Anthem and Adam calls out the dirtiest player in the NFL. Better at life honors go to Adam's favorite general manager in basketball while Brandan talks about an MMA fighter who provided some entertainment on his way to a big payday. Hawks Playbook Podcast Episode 21 - Training Camp Report Vol. 1 Open: This week’s episode is focused on the first week of training camp for the Seahawks, which began on Sunday.  We have finally made it passed “the offseason” and have moved onto the Pre-Season phase of Seahawks football! News: An otherwise celebratory atmosphere of the opening day of camp was tamped down a bit by missing player: Malik McDowell.    Kam Chancellor signed a 3 year, 36-million-dollar extension. We talk about Kenny Easley’s long and winding road to being inducted into the NFL’s Hall of Fame this weekend, and the training camp punch that Frank Clark landed on Germain Ifedi in camp on Thursday.  Signings:  Marcel Reece.  Mike Morgan.  Marcus Smith Cuts:  Arthur Brown.  Nolan Frese Trade: Kevin Pierre Louis traded to Kansas City for DJ Alexander.   Featured Segment: Training Camp Report Vol. 1 Keith can’t wait to talk offensive line, so we start there. While it looks like Britt and Ifedi have solidified their spots other position battles are taking place: Glowinski, Fant, Joeckel, Odhiambo and Pocic are still battling.  We move to the defense and discuss standout players at secondary and linebacker. Finally, we turn our attention back over to the offense and discuss the competition at running back and wide receiver, and end the show talking about camp standouts Russell Wilson and Jimmy Graham.
