“Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; uphold the rights of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” - Psalm 82:3–4As followers of Christ, we're called to advocate for the vulnerable and protect the oppressed. One of the most urgent needs today is among girls and young women in Lebanon. May-Lee Melki joins us with a powerful story of hope and a way you can make a difference. May-Lee Melki is a Lebanese-American advocate, legal scholar, and ministry leader dedicated to advancing justice and holistic transformation in the Middle East. She serves as the Strategic Engagement Manager at Heart for Lebanon, an underwriter of Faith and Finance. The Crisis Behind the HeadlinesIn a society shaped by shame-and-honor dynamics, without a biblical understanding of human dignity, refugee girls—especially Bedouin and Kurdish—are often seen as burdens or liabilities. Add to that multiple wars, a collapsed economy, and weak legal protections, and the danger becomes tragically clear: girls are exploited because they're seen as expendable. But Heart for Lebanon is stepping in not just to rescue—but to prevent. That may sound counterintuitive until you hear stories like Ferial's—a grandmother who joined a literacy class to model a different future for her granddaughters. After coming to know Christ through Heart for Lebanon, she said, “I can't change what happened to my daughters, but I can change the future for my granddaughters.”Prevention means investing in the whole family unit. It means addressing spiritual, emotional, and physical needs by offering:Christian counseling in their native languageNon-formal education programs that integrate biblical valuesSafe, holistic discipleship environments for moms, dads, and childrenCommunity development rooted in the GospelOne of the most moving examples is Alima, a 10-year-old enrolled in Heart for Lebanon's Hope Education Program. Her mother, under cultural and financial pressure, began pushing Alima to abandon school and enter into marriage. But because of the truth Alima had learned through Heart for Lebanon—truth about Jesus and her God-given worth—she found the courage to push back. Her bold faith not only protected her from child marriage but, through prayer and persistence, led to her mother's salvation as well. This is the ripple effect of prevention-centered ministry.Real Change Through Holistic MinistryThe key to sustainable impact is community transformation. The goal isn't to isolate and remove girls from danger—which can sometimes cause more trauma—but to reshape families and communities from within through Gospel truth. When fathers, uncles, and guardians are discipled alongside mothers and daughters, entire cultural norms begin to shift. That's what Heart for Lebanon is doing every day—breaking cycles of violence and shame with the hope of Jesus.Heart for Lebanon is inviting the Faith & Finance family to join them in this mission. A gift of $114 helps reach and protect three at-risk girls, offering them education, protection, and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. You can give by:Texting “FAITH” to 98656Visiting FaithFi.com/LebanonOur shared goal? “As far as the people that have to do with Cuyama Buckhorn, the ranchers and farmers that have been there for a long time, you will never leave a dinner with them where you don't get some new story that is worthy of a chapter in a book. They've been out there their whole lives and it's always fun to hear what they have to say.” We're in great company with Jeff Vance and Ferial Sadeghian, Owners of Cuyama Buckhorn, a timeless roadside resort in the heart of California's high desert. Originally built in 1952 experiencing decades of glory days as the local watering hole for a booming oil town, Jeff and Ferial have taken meticulous care and personal attention in restoring the historic mid-century architecture and design, while bringing it into a new era with luxurious modern amenities. Today, Cuyama Buckhorn is an intimate getaway for out of towners and a trusted community center for locals alike, filled with thoughtfully crafted meals, a bar where conversation flows effortlessly and revitalized rooms with stylistic nods to the past. In this episode, Jeff and Ferial share how a mutual interest in exploring the world of hospitality, looking for a remote property that could provide an unexpected and unassuming destination experience, turned into so much more. How the joy of shared experiences with the local community, the creative spirit and sense of place at Cuyama Buckhorn in particular, creates a connection to the natural beauty of Cuyama Valley. Top Takeaways [1:30] Jeff grew up in and around Los Angeles with a bar seat view into the world of hospitality before pursuing a career and founding a company in architectural design. Ferial, originally from Iran, grew up with a love of travel and food, as she explored much of Europe and the Middle East with her family before finding her way to Los Angeles and joining iDGroup. [10:00] Jeff “peel's back the wallpaper” to share his personal connection to Cuyama Valley and the storied history of the Cuyama Buckhorn during its glory days throughout the 50's & 60's as a community watering hole in a booming oil town. [14:35] It was an unexpected but welcomed involvement in the local town from the beginning for Jeff and Ferial, hosting an artist residency with storytelling opportunities around the property, and supporting independent farmers in what is considered a food desert due to big agriculture's control over the local land. [28:40] The Buckhorn is brimming with unexpected and unpretentious farm-to-table comfort food and farm-to-glass cocktail and wine programs where guests can enjoy meeting the farmers, foraging for ingredients, tasting the barrel-aging process as they savor the company they're in. [42:00] Whether you choose to hike, mountain bike or drive the Hidden Valley of Enchantment, there are interesting roads in all directions leading to the California coast, wine country or scenic central highway. [47:00] There's much growth and prosperity in the future for Cuyama Buckhorn, from refining the culinary menu, continuing community events, crafting wood fired dishes, concepting a spa experience and stewarding a sustainable garden. [1]And it came to pass, that in those days there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that the whole world should be enrolled. Factum est autem in diebus illis, exiit edictum a Caesare Augusto ut describeretur universus orbis. [2] This enrolling was first made by Cyrinus, the governor of Syria. Haec descriptio prima facta est a praeside Syriae Cyrino : [3] And all went to be enrolled, every one into his own city. et ibant omnes ut profiterentur singuli in suam civitatem. [4] And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem: because he was of the house and family of David, Ascendit autem et Joseph a Galilaea de civitate Nazareth in Judaeam, in civitatem David, quae vocatur Bethlehem : eo quod esset de domo et familia David, [5] To be enrolled with Mary his espoused wife, who was with child. ut profiteretur cum Maria desponsata sibi uxore praegnante. [6] And it came to pass, that when they were there, her days were accomplished, that she should be delivered. Factum est autem, cum essent ibi, impleti sunt dies ut pareret. [7] And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him up in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. Et peperit filium suum primogenitum, et pannis eum involvit, et reclinavit eum in praesepio : quia non erat eis locus in diversorio. [8] And there were in the same country shepherds watching, and keeping the night watches over their flock. Et pastores erant in regione eadem vigilantes, et custodientes vigilias noctis super gregem suum. [9] And behold an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the brightness of God shone round about them; and they feared with a great fear. Et ecce angelus Domini stetit juxta illos, et claritas Dei circumfulsit illos, et timuerunt timore magno. [10] And the angel said to them: Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, that shall be to all the people: Et dixit illis angelus : Nolite timere : ecce enim evangelizo vobis gaudium magnum, quod erit omni populo : [11] For, this day, is born to you a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord, in the city of David. quia natus est vobis hodie Salvator, qui est Christus Dominus, in civitate David. Music: Credo IV.
And the third day, there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee: and the mother of Jesus was there. Et die tertia nuptiae factae sunt in Cana Galilaeae, et erat mater Jesu ibi. [2] And Jesus also was invited, and his disciples, to the marriage. Vocatus est autem et Jesus, et discipuli ejus, ad nuptias. [3] And the wine failing, the mother of Jesus saith to him: They have no wine. Et deficiente vino, dicit mater Jesu ad eum : Vinum non habent. [4] And Jesus saith to her: Woman, what is that to me and to thee? my hour is not yet come. Et dicit ei Jesus : Quid mihi et tibi est, mulier? nondum venit hora mea. [5] His mother saith to the waiters: Whatsoever he shall say to you, do ye. Dicit mater ejus ministris : Quodcumque dixerit vobis, facite. [6] Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three measures apiece. Erant autem ibi lapideae hydriae sex positae secundum purificationem Judaeorum, capientes singulae metretas binas vel ternas. [7] Jesus saith to them: Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. Dicit eis Jesus : Implete hydrias aqua. Et impleverunt eas usque ad summum. [8] And Jesus saith to them: Draw out now, and carry to the chief steward of the feast. And they carried it. Et dicit eis Jesus : Haurite nunc, et ferte architriclinio. Et tulerunt. [9] And when the chief steward had tasted the water made wine, and knew not whence it was, but the waiters knew who had drawn the water; the chief steward calleth the bridegroom, Ut autem gustavit architriclinius aquam vinum factam, et non sciebat unde esset, ministri autem sciebant, qui hauserant aquam : vocat sponsum architriclinius, [10] And saith to him: Every man at first setteth forth good wine, and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse. But thou hast kept the good wine until now. et dicit ei : Omnis homo primum bonum vinum ponit et cum inebriati fuerint, tunc id, quod deterius est. Tu autem servasti bonum vinum usque adhuc. [11] This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee; and manifested his glory, and his disciples believed in him. Hoc fecit initium signorum Jesus in Cana Galilaeae; et manifestavit gloriam suam, et crediderunt in eum discipuli ejus.
[42]And when he was twelve years old, they going up into Jerusalem, according to the custom of the feast, Et cum factus esset annorum duodecim, ascendentibus illis Jerosolymam secundum consuetudinem diei festi, [43] And having fulfilled the days, when they returned, the child Jesus remained in Jerusalem; and his parents knew it not. consummatisque diebus, cum redirent, remansit puer Jesus in Jerusalem, et non cognoverunt parentes ejus. [44] And thinking that he was in the company, they came a day's journey, and sought him among their kinsfolks and acquaintance. Existimantes autem illum esse in comitatu, venerunt iter diei, et requirebant eum inter cognatos et notos. [45] And not finding him, they returned into Jerusalem, seeking him. Et non invenientes, regressi sunt in Jerusalem, requirentes eum. [46] And it came to pass, that, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, hearing them, and asking them questions. Et factum est, post triduum invenerunt illum in templo sedentem in medio doctorum, audientem illos, et interrogantem eos. [47] And all that heard him were astonished at his wisdom and his answers. Stupebant autem omnes qui eum audiebant, super prudentia et responsis ejus. [48] And seeing him, they wondered. And his mother said to him: Son, why hast thou done so to us? behold thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. Et videntes admirati sunt. Et dixit mater ejus ad illum : Fili, quid fecisti nobis sic? ecce pater tuus et ego dolentes quaerebamus te. [49] And he said to them: How is it that you sought me? did you not know, that I must be about my father's business? Et ait ad illos : Quid est quod me quaerebatis? nesciebatis quia in his quae Patris mei sunt, oportet me esse? [50] And they understood not the word that he spoke unto them. Et ipsi non intellexerunt verbum quod locutus est ad eos. [51] And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them. And his mother kept all these words in her heart. Et descendit cum eis, et venit Nazareth : et erat subditus illis. Et mater ejus conservabat omnia verba haec in corde suo. [52] And Jesus advanced in wisdom, and age, and grace with God and men. Et Jesus proficiebat sapientia, et aetate, et gratia apud Deum et homines. Music: We Three Kings. Hopkins.

In this week's episode of the NB Publishers podcast, Ferial Haffajee chats to Ismail Lagardien about his book Too White to be Coloured, Too Coloured to be Black. His book is a hybrid narrative, blending memoir with social commentary and political analysis. Always in search of "home", the book tracks Ismail Lagardien's vast experiences of a deeply lived life, always against a backdrop of "unbelonging" ─ first as a reporter in the turbulent 80s, to studying economics at the LSE, then achieving a doctorate at the University of Wales, to working as a speechwriter at the World Bank in Washington. A unique and brilliant read. This episode was recorded during an Exclusive Books webinar launch. 14] At length he appeared to the eleven as they were at table: and he upbraided them with their incredulity and hardness of heart, because they did not believe them who had seen him after he was risen again. ... [15] And he said to them: Go ye into the whole world, and preach the gospel to every creature. ... [16] He that believeth and is baptized, shall be saved: but he that believeth not shall be condemned. ... [17] And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name they shall cast out devils: they shall speak with new tongues. ... [18] They shall take up serpents; and if they shall drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them: they shall lay their hands upon the sick, and they shall recover. ... [19] And the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God. ... [20] But they going forth preached everywhere: the Lord working withal, and confirming the word with signs that followed.

Luke 8:4-15 “8:4. And when a very great multitude was gathered together and hastened out of the cities, unto him, he spoke by a similitude.” “8:5. The sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell by the way side. And it was trodden down: and the fowls of the air devoured it. 8:6. And other some fell upon a rock. And as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. 8:7. And other some fell among thorns. And the thorns growing up with it, choked it. 8:8. And other some fell upon good ground and, being sprung up, yielded fruit a hundredfold. Saying these things, he cried out: He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. 8:9. And his disciples asked him what this parable might be. 8:10. To whom he said: To you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to the rest in parables, that seeing they may not see and hearing may not understand. Seeing they may not see. . .See the annotation, Mark 4. 12.” Mark “4:12. That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them. That seeing they may see, etc. . .in punishment of their wilfully shutting their eyes, (St. Matt. 13. 15,) God justly withdrew those lights and graces, which otherwise he would have given them, for their effectual conversion.” Matt 13:15. “For the heart of this people is grown gross, and with their ears they have been dull of hearing, and their eyes they have shut: lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.” “8:11. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 8:12. And they by the way side are they that hear: then the devil cometh and taketh the word out of their heart, lest believing they should be saved. 8:13. Now they upon the rock are they who when they hear receive the word with joy: and these have no roots: for they believe for a while and in time of temptation they fall away. 8:14. And that which fell among thorns are they who have heard and, going their way, are choked with the cares and riches and pleasures of this life and yield no fruit. 8:15. But that on the good ground are they who in a good and perfect heart, hearing the word, keep it and bring forth fruit in patience.” Excerpt From The Bible, Douay-Rheims, Complete Anonymous https://books.apple.com/us/book/the-bible-douay-rheims-complete/id955129088 This material may be protected by copyright.

Matt 13:24-30 “13:24. Another parable he proposed to them, saying: The kingdom of heaven is likened to a man that sowed good seed in his field. 13:25. But while men were asleep, his enemy came and oversowed cockle among the wheat and went his way. 13:26. And when the blade was sprung up, and had brought forth fruit, then appeared also the cockle. 13:27. And the servants of the good man of the house coming said to him. Sir, didst thou not sow good seed in thy field? Whence then hath it cockle?” “13:28. And he said to them: An enemy hath done this. And the servants said to him: Wilt thou that we go and gather it up? 13:29. And he said: No, lest perhaps gathering up the cockle, you root up the wheat also together with it. 13:30. Suffer both to grow until the harvest, and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers: Gather up first the cockle, and bind it into bundles to burn, but the wheat gather ye into my barn.” Excerpt From The Bible, Douay-Rheims, Complete Anonymous https://books.apple.com/us/book/the-bible-douay-rheims-complete/id955129088 This material may be protected by copyright.
John 6:51-55 “6:51. I am the living bread which came down from heaven. 6:52. If any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world. 6:53. The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying: How can this man give us his flesh to eat? 6:54. Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen, I say unto you: except you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you. Except you eat—and drink, etc. . .To receive the body and blood of Christ, is a divine precept, insinuated in this text; which the faithful fulfil, though they receive but in one kind; because in one kind they receive both body and blood,” “which cannot be separated from each other. Hence, life eternal is here promised to the worthy receiving, though but in one kind. Ver. 52. If any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever; and the bread that I will give, is my flesh for the life of the world. Ver. 58. He that eateth me, the same also shall live by me. Ver. 59. He that eateth this bread, shall liver for ever. 6:55. He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath everlasting life: and I will raise him up in the last day.” Excerpt From The Bible, Douay-Rheims, Complete Anonymous https://books.apple.com/us/book/the-bible-douay-rheims-complete/id955129088 This material may be protected by copyright.
Matt 22:15-21 “22:15. Then the Pharisees going, consulted among themselves how to insnare him in his speech.” “22:16. And they sent to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying: Master, we know that thou art a true speaker and teachest the way of God in truth. Neither carest thou for any man: for thou dost not regard the person of men. The Herodians. . .That is, some that belonged to Herod, and that joined with him in standing up for the necessity of paying tribute to Caesar, that is, to the Roman emperor. Some are of opinion that there was a sect among the Jews called Herodians, from their maintaining that Herod was the Messias. 22:17. Tell us therefore what dost thou think? Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not? 22:18. But Jesus knowing their wickedness, said: Why do you tempt me, ye hypocrites? 22:19. Shew me the coin of the tribute. And they offered him a penny. 22:20. And Jesus saith to them: Whose image and inscription is this?” “22:21. They say to him: Caesar's. Then he saith to them: Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's; and to God, the things that are God's.” Excerpt From The Bible, Douay-Rheims, Complete Anonymous https://books.apple.com/us/book/the-bible-douay-rheims-complete/id955129088 This material may be protected by copyright.
Matt 18:23-35 “18:23. Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened to a king, who would take an account of his servants. 18:24. And when he had begun to take the account, one as brought to him, that owed him ten thousand talents. Talents. . .A talent was seven hundred and fifty ounces of silver, which at the rate of five shillings to the ounce is a hundred and eighty-seven pounds ten shillings sterling. 18:25. And as he had not wherewith to pay it, his lord commanded that he should be sold, and his wife and children, and all that he had, and payment” “children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. 18:26. But that servant falling down, besought him, saying: Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. 18:27. And the lord of that servant being moved with pity, let him go and forgave him the debt. 18:28. But when that servant was gone out, he found one of his fellow-servants that owed him an hundred pence: and laying hold of him, he throttled him, saying: Pay what thou owest. Pence. . .The Roman penny was the eighth part of an ounce, that is, about sevenpence half-penny English. 18:29. And his fellow-servant falling down, besought him, saying: Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. 18:30. And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he paid the debt.” “18:31. Now his fellow servants seeing what was done, were very much grieved, and they came, and told their lord all that was done. 18:32. Then his lord called him: and said to him: Thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all the debt, because thou besoughtest me: 18:33. Shouldst not thou then have had compassion also on thy fellow servant, even as I had compassion on thee? 18:34. And his lord being angry, delivered him to the torturers until he paid all the debt. 18:35. So also shall my heavenly Father do to you, if you forgive not every one his brother from your hearts.” Excerpt From The Bible, Douay-Rheims, Complete Anonymous https://books.apple.com/us/book/the-bible-douay-rheims-complete/id955129088 This material may be protected by copyright.

The junk orchestra is tuning up as we sift through debris with Ferial Confine "The Full Use of Nothing." Squeals becomes notes, layers become voices, and chaos becomes ambient. An inspiring chunk of 1980s UK noise, this album leads us out of the mundane into the nothingness of total sound.
Today we are discussing what has, unfortunately, become controversial over the new health standards that have been put forth by the Nebraska department of education. The controversial parts mainly surrounding gender identity and sexuality. Ferial Pearson is joining me as my co-host today with Christon and Lisa Shultz from Women's Fund of Omaha. Ferial was the GAS leader which is the gay-straight alliance that supports LGBTQIA students and their heterosexual allies within the schools they attend. Truth is the kindest thing we can give folks. Kids are dying. Kids are taking their own lives or are subject to violence when we do not educate everyone on the harms caused by withholding information, education, and acceptance. We want what is best for our kids in our communities to thrive. Adults are barriers. Adults are bringing their own misinformation and ignorance to fight against these conversations because adults are uncomfortable. Our young people deserve honesty, truth, and information to lead their best lives. Silence, secrecy, and fear allow violence and abuse to flourish. Research-based education empowers young people. When we know better, we can do better. We ask that each of you share this with one person. There are powers that are trying to shut down this conversation and are opposing these health standards, so our best action is to spread the evidence. Empower others to understand the issue and speak up for it in their own lives in their own way. Influence and educate the people around you to combat the misinformation spreading. Born in Nairobi, Kenya, Dr. Pearson identifies as a queer, Muslim, Indian-African immigrant woman, first-generation college graduate, educator, community activist, speaker, writer, and creator of the internationally-recognized Secret Kindness Agents Project. Pearson earned a BA in Language Arts Teaching from Gustavus Adolphus College in 2001, an MS in Urban Instruction from UNO in 2009, and an Ed.D from UNO in 2017. You might recognize her from her famous TikTok videos from her quarantine bread making OR her UNO Tedx talk OR her global Secret Kindness Agents Project. Dr. Ferial Pearson is quite simply a badass. Today we're joined by Rhianna Ferial, a nurse anesthetist. I find Rhianna's story particularly interesting because she is not only dedicated to helping her patients, but runs a YouTube channel with over 30,000 subscribers, where she makes videos sharing her experiences. She covers every part of the career, and is an inspiration for anyone considering a career in medicine. We talk about the basics of anesthesia, and the high levels of accountability that are required in the field, as well as her experiences in nursing, from her time working in the ICU, as a travel nurse, and currently as a nurse anesthetist, complete with stories from her practice. State of (our) nations — An incredible woman's take on our sociopolitical landscape Ferial Haffajee (Daily Maverick | Associate Editor | Author and Award-winning Journalist) We start off season 2 themed (in conversations with) 'Incredible Women' and Ferial Haffajee was one of the first names that came to mind. My entire family are massive fans of her work and career, and I fervently follow her writings. This interview was a huge honour, privilege and very timely considering the worries that all South African's have today about our country. We explore Ferial's early childhood growing up in Bosmont (a Johannesburg 'Coloured area') and how that has influenced her career and tenacity. But, we quickly branch into her views regarding South Africa's political landscape, rampant corruption, Etc. My questions were focused on the topics all of us are currently surfacing: 'Is there a future for South Africa?' 'Should we stay in the country?' 'Why does our President seem so inept in dealing with the adversities?' 'Why isn't anyone going to jail due to the corruption?' and more... As usual, Ferial fascinates with insightful responses and her perpetual South African positivity - I loved this conversation! Not only is this an incredible woman but also one of THE top journalists our country has produced.
