Dean Janikowski is the kicker for Washington State University. He was All Pac-12 in 2021 and had a great season in 2022 hitting 11 of 14 field goals including a 50 yarder. Sebastian Janikowski, also known as Sea Bass and The Polish Cannon, was born on March 2, 1978 in Valbrich, Poland. His father was a professional soccer player, and in 1980 he moved to the states in an attempt to revive his career. Sebastian was still in Poland with his mother and he began to excel at soccer. He was good enough to make to Poland U-17 team at age 15.Janikowski only played five games for Orangewood Christian soccer team, but scored 15 goals and led them to the state championship, where they lost to Lakeland Christian. He attended Seabreeze High School in Daytona, Florida, where he played soccer and football. His father refused to move, so Sebastian lived with the soccer coach of the high school. He gained reputation quickly by kicking four 50+yard field goals, including a whopping 60 yarder. Witnesses state he successfully converted an 82-yard field goal at team practice. Named to the 1996 All-American team and heavily recruited, Janikowski eventually signing a football scholarship with Florida State University.Janikowski took a scholarship to kick footballs for the Florida State Seminoles where teammate Peter Warrick dubbed him “Sea Bass”. He first made his name by booting his monstrous kickoffs between the opponent’s goal posts and out of the back of the end zone. He won the prestigious Lou Groza Award in 1998 and 1999, which was annually awarded to the top collegiate placekicker. He is the only player in NCAA history to win the award twice. He finished his collegiate career as the third leading scorer in Florida State University football history.
In this episode I chat with Assistant Coach Mike Janikowski of the Muskegon Community College Jayhawks. Coach Mike focuses mainly on post player development and recruiting with Jayhawks, but as all of you coaches may know, that's not all he does! Nonetheless, Coach Mike helped lead the Jayhawks to a record of 26-4 last season and a bid to the National Tournament. Unfortunately, like many other colleges seeking post season play last year, they were unable to compete due to Covid-19. This year he has 17 new incomers on his team. He's going to tell us about his journey through coaching. We got Tony's thoughts on football in the first hour of the show, but there's so much going on in the league, we continue the discussion in Hour 3. Antonio Brown is unsurprisingly no longer with Pittsburgh, so now where? Any chance he ends up here? Could he end up in Santa Clara? There's no way Janikowski is back next year, so what's the next kicking move for the Hawks? Kyler Murray has chosen football over his contract with the A's. Can he be successful in this league? Dick gives away Seattle Golf Show passes, but only to listeners who actually pay attention, in a round of Golf trivia. The most embarrassed college kid in America can be found on the campus of Towson University, where his mom has been relentlessly hounding women trying to find him a date.

Calls continue to come in on the biggest reason the Hawks lost on Saturday. Obviously our kicking game wasn't on point, and Janikowski going down didn't help. Could his injury, at least in part, be because he isn't healthy? If Seabass isn't back next year (and he probably won't be) it'll be the fourth kicker for the team in four years. There aren't a lot of good kickers out there though; not even at the college level. Bama takes on Clemson tonight and Ryan Fowler from Tuscaloosa's Tide 102.9 makes his way to the West Coast to watch the game. He joins us from Santa Clara to explain why he is sure the Tide will be victorious. Textimonials come in at 49451 on the biggest Hawks problems, and the College Football Championship game.

With a postseason spot already clinched, the Seahawks took fans on a ride that seemed to be reminiscent of past memories. From a player wearing number 83 getting knocked down as a slant pass was intercepted, to abandoning the run in the way they did early this season, it brought back some bad memories. Ross Bell of the UK Sea Hawkers joins Brandan to talk about why, against the Cardinals, the Seahawks seem to refuse to win pretty. The last time a matchup between these two teams was decided by more than a touchdown was a 36-6 victory in Arizona. But the Seahawks finally get a win at home, 27-24, against an Arizona team that had won three straight times at CenturyLink. With their two starting guards out, Seattle moved Ifedi into guard and put George Fant at right tackle for the second straight game. It didn't go well as Wilson was sacked six times. Protecting the punter was also a problem as one punt was blocked for a touchdown and another was partially blocked. After back-to-back drives to start the half were unsuccessful following three straight pass plays, Seattle was backed up on the two-yard line to start their third drive. It looked like another turnover would go into the end zone for a touchdown until a holding call on the Cardinals defense gave Seattle new life. Chris Carson broke his biggest run of the season going 61 yards downfield and Mike Davis finished off the drive with a 17-yard run into the end zone. The Cardinals continued to fight back, but Russell Wilson put together another one of his fourth quarter game-winning drives and Janikowski kicked the game winner (something Blair Walsh couldn't manage last season).

It was a costly victory as the Seahawks came away with a 20-17 win over the Cardinals. To divide the game into parts of frustration and excitement, the frustration wins out especially when considering a goose egg on 3rd downs, the inability to get a consistent pass rush, missing two field goals and losing Earl Thomas to what was likely his last time in a Seahawks uniform. Strangely it happens on the same field that Kam Chancellor and Richard Sherman played their last games with the team. To see Russell Wilson lead the game winning drive and have Janikowski kick the last second field goal, it seemed to bring more of a feeling of relief than joy. Chris Carson sat out the game due to injury and Mike Davis gave us a 2nd straight 100-yard game. He even did it on 10 fewer carries and scored the Seahawks only two touchdowns of the game. Seattle, on the defensive side of the ball, ultimately was able to keep David Johnson in check. Josh Rosen had little help from his receivers with multiple drops, and special teams was equally frustrating as the two missed field goals by Dawson matched the misses by Seattle. The Seahawks return home this week to take on the Rams. It was going to be a test with a healthy Earl Thomas leading the secondary, but if they can manage to put defensive backs instead of linebackers on the Rams wide receivers they’ll be a step ahead of Minnesota. If they can pull off a win, it could really make some heads spin and show us all that this team isn’t ready to accept a fate that so many were predicting for the Seahawks in the offseason. Maybe the show title is missing a question mark. When it comes to a commitment to the run game, it seems like three straight runs to start the game was enough, because Seattle completely moved away with it and had no success through the second and third quarters. The clear lack of a run game was the story of the game as the Seahawks fall to the Bears 24-17. The score didn't dictate any reason to keep the ball off the ground as Seattle was down only 10-3 at halftime thanks to a long field goal by Janikowski. It wasn't until Seattle started moving the ball on the ground in the fourth quarter that the Seahawks started to see some success against the Bears defensive line. Before the start of the fourth quarter, Wilson had dropped back 14 straight times and was sacked a total of six times throughout the game. After a Tyler Lockett touchdown got them within a score, the defense got a stop and Seattle had the momentum. As the announcers were cheering the commitment to the run, the Seahawks go to an empty backfield and Russell's pass out to Penny on the sideline was picked off and returned for a touchdown. The guys discuss where to assess blame and it wasn't to the defense, which managed to hold the Bears offense to 17 points without Bobby Wagner, K.J. Wright and their starting corner from the game against the Broncos. Where was Chris Carson in the second half? According to Coach Carroll he was "gassed" from playing on special teams. The guys offer some positives as the team heads back home to Seattle after Shaquill Griffin had a monster game with two interceptions. We close with a discussion over whether or not Coach Carroll had the opportunity to challenge a potential turnover early on in the game where Earl Thomas appeared to force a fumble.
