In “Best of 2022”, Nathan and Alana sit down to discuss some of our favorite episodes from this year on the podcast. Join us as we look back on the big issues of the year, from the overturning of Roe v. This week I look at the advantage of being on the play. Why do we win more when on the play, why starting gives you the advantage in later game and how does this advantage look like depending on the game length. Choosing to be on the play is a good heuristic, but I also look at when would it be theoretically good to choose to go second. And try to use 17Lands data to find decks that would, at least in theory, be better off going second. What types of cards are leading to those types of deck? What is the density of those types of cards that would prompt you to go second? In the end I show a simple model that lets you decide exactly that. Still in majority of cases you should chose to go first, but roughly 13% of decks are at least as good on the draw as on the play. In Best-of-3 this means you can get an extra edge as your opponent would typically choose to be on the play. This means you will always end up starting the game in a privileged position. Vier Serie gab es also und in drei davon gibt es nach dem ersten Wochenende noch nicht den geringsten Ansatz, wer die Serie für sich entscheiden könnte. Allein die Mainz Athletics konnten ihre beiden Spiele gegen die Dohren Wild Farmers gewinnen und reisen mit einem 2-0 im Gepäck in den hohen Norden. Die Mannheim Tornados konnten gegen die Solingen Alligators Spiel 1 für sich entscheiden. Die Offensive des Mannheimer Lineups sorgte mal wieder für die entscheidenden Hits. Ein Offensivspektakel gab es in Paderborn. Die Heidenheim Heideköpfe konnten Spiel 1 dank einer wieder mal herausragenden Leistung von Mike Bolsenbroek mit einem Shutout gewinnen. Im 2. Die Inzidenz der Bovinen Neonatalen Panzytopenie (BNP) variiert zwischen einzelnen Betrieben sehr stark (0,3-20 %). Aus diesem Grund sollten im Rahmen der vorliegenden Studie Faktoren ermittelt werden, die Einfluss auf die Höhe der Inzidenz haben können. Dazu wurde zunächst die Inzidenz von 255 in einer Datenbank der Klinik für Wiederkäuer der LMU München registrierten BNP-Betriebe berechnet, nachdem die Gesamtanzahl der BNP-Fälle je Bestand und der Zeitraum, in welchem diese aufgetreten waren, ermittelt wurden. Für die Studie wurden dann 35 Betriebe mit hoher BNP-Inzidenz (> 6,5 %) und 49 Bestände, die eine niedrige BNP-Inzidenz (≤ 6,5 %) aufwiesen, hinsichtlich der BVD-Impfung, des Kolostrummanagements und der Kälbergesundheit vergleichend untersucht. In den näher untersuchten 84 BNP-Betrieben wurden zwischen 01.01.2005 und 31.08.2011 insgesamt 521 BNP-/BNP-Verdachtsfälle dokumentiert. Bei 298 wurde BNP durch eine Blutuntersuchung und/oder eine Sektion bestätigt. Die restlichen Verdachtsfälle waren nicht untersucht. Bei den BNP-Kälbern Bestand weder eine Rasse- noch eine Geschlechterprädisposition. Nur 8,6 % der BNP-Kälber überlebten die Erkrankung. Der Anteil der BNP-Mütter betrug in Betrieben mit niedriger Inzidenz zwischen ein und 16 %, in Beständen mit hoher Inzidenz zwischen sieben und 40 %. In beiden Inzidenzgruppen hatte der Großteil der BNP-Mütter lediglich ein Kalb, das an BNP erkrankte. Aufgrund des Auftretens von BNP-Fällen wurden bis zu 15 Kühe pro Bestand geschlachtet. Landwirte aus Betrieben mit hoher Inzidenz setzten das Erstkolostrum häufiger und über eine größere Anzahl von Mahlzeiten ein als Landwirte der Gruppe mit niedriger Inzidenz. Ein erhöhtes Risiko für eine hohe BNP-Inzidenz entstand auch durch die Verfütterung von Mischkolostrum. Das Volumen pro Mahlzeit und die Dauer der Biestmilchversorgung unterschieden sich zwischen den beiden Inzidenzgruppen nicht voneinander. In 30 der 35 Betriebe mit hoher Inzidenz wurde das Kolostrummanagement dahingehend umgestellt, dass BNP-Kolostrum entsorgt und Nachkommen der BNP-Mütter mit Biestmilch anderer Kühe aus dem eigenen Bestand oder in Einzelfällen aus einem Nachbarbetrieb versorgt wurden. In acht dieser Betriebe wurden seitdem keine neuen BNP-Fälle beobachtet, 22 Betriebsleiter registrierten erneut Fälle von BNP. Drei Landwirte hatten alle BNP-Mütter verkauft und zwei, die weiterhin BNP-Kolostrum einsetzten, registrierten keine neuen Fälle mehr. 16 Betriebsleiter der Gruppe mit niedriger Inzidenz hatten alle BNP-Mütter aus dem Bestand entfernt. Von 19 Betriebsleitern, die eine Veränderung der Kolostrumversogung eingeführt hatten, beobachteten elf keine weiteren BNP-Kälber mehr. Insgesamt 14 Betriebsleiter verfütterten weiterhin BNP-Kolostrum an Kälber, woraufhin in vier Betrieben erneut BNP-Fälle von bereits bekannten BNP-Müttern auftraten. Das Schema der BVD-Impfung unterschied sich zwischen den Inzidenzgruppen dahingehend, dass in Betrieben mit niedriger Inzidenz häufiger keine Grundimmunisierung durchgeführt wurde, der Abstand der beiden Impfungen der Grundimmunisierung häufig größer war als in Betrieben mit hoher Inzidenz und dass ein höherer Anteil der Landwirte aus der Gruppe mit niedriger Inzidenz Rinder bereits ab einem Alter von drei Monaten grundimmunisieren ließ. In Beständen mit hoher Inzidenz wurde PregSure® BVD tendenziell länger eingesetzt und BNP-Mütter aus diesen Betrieben wiesen eine höhere Anzahl an Impfungen mit der Vakzine auf als solche aus Betrieben mit niedriger Inzidenz. Es wurden BNP-Mütter registriert, die vier Jahre nach der letzten Impfung mit PregSure® BVD das erste BNP-Kalb geboren hatten. Betriebsleiter der Gruppe mit hoher BNP-Inzidenz verzeichneten seit dem Auftreten der BNP eine statistisch signifikant höhere Anzahl an Behandlungen von Kälbern unter vier Wochen aufgrund von Durchfall, Lungen- und Nabelentzündung. Zusammen mit dem vermehrten Einsatz von Halofuginon, Vitamin E/ Selen, Mutterschutzimpfungen und Impfungen gegen Rindergrippe in beiden Inzidenzgruppen seit dem Auftreten von BNP, kann angenommen werden, dass seit dem Vorkommen von BNP vermehrt behandlungswürdige Erkrankungsfälle auftreten, die möglicherweise auf subklinische BNP zurückzuführen sind. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchungen führen zu der Annahme, dass nicht nur aufgrund des Totalverlustes verendeter BNP-Kälber, sondern auch infolge der durch die subklinische BNP bedingte Zunahme der Inzidenz von Kälberkrankheiten und deren notwendige Behandlungen, den Landwirten aus BNP-Betrieben ein nicht unerheblicher zusätzlicher Schaden entstehen kann. Da über die Hälfte der 1210 BNP-und BNP-Verdachtsfälle aus 255 Betrieben dem Paul-Ehrlich-Institut nicht gemeldet wurden und 57 % der Betriebe dem Institut nicht bekannt waren, kann von einem beträchtlichen „underreporting“ gesprochen werden.

Ziel dieser Arbeit war es, die Prävalenz des felinen Herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1), des felinen Calicivirus (FCV), von Chlamydophila felis (C. felis) und von Bordetella bronchiseptica (B. bronchiseptica) in Mehrkatzenhaushalten (>= 5 Katzen) zu bestimmen. Es sollten Faktoren untersucht werden, die Einfluss auf die Prävalenz der Erreger haben. Zudem wurden Mehrkatzenhaushalte in denen Katzenschnupfen auftrat mit „gesunden“ Beständen verglichen und die Faktoren ermittelt, in denen sich die Bestände unterschieden. Der Nachweis von FHV-1, FCV und C. felis erfolgte mittels multiplex real-time Polymerase-Kettenreaktion (PCR). Zur Ermittlung der B.-bronchispetica-Prävalenz wurde ein Antikörpernachweis mittels enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) durchgeführt. Die Prävalenz in Beständen mit respiratorischen Problemen lag für FHV-1 bei 18,3 %, für FCV bei 57,6 % und für C. felis bei 8,2 %. In Beständen ohne respiratorische Probleme lag die Prävalenz für FHV-1 bei 11,6 %, für FCV bei 49,3 % und für C. felis bei 2,9 %. Keiner der drei Erreger trat signifikant häufiger in Beständen auf, in denen Katzenschnupfen vorkam. Die Antikörperprävalenz von B. bronchiseptica war in Beständen mit und ohne respiratorische Probleme ähnlich hoch (39,0 % bzw. 44,4 %). Die Einflussfaktoren wurden mittels multivariabler logistischer Regression untersucht. Faktoren, die einen signifikanten Einfluss auf den Nachweis des FHV-1 hatten, waren die Hygiene im Bestand sowie der Kontakt mit Hunden. Einen statistisch signifikanten Einfluss auf die FCV-Prävalenz hatten der Hygienestatus und die Anzahl der Katzen im Bestand. Auf die C.-felis-Prävalenz hatten die Hygiene und die Rasse der Katzen einen signifikanten Einfluss. Die B.-bronchiseptica-Antikörperprävalenz wurde vom Alter der Katzen und dem Bestandstyp signifikant beeinflusst. Beim Vergleich der Kontroll- und der Fallgruppe unterschieden sich nur der Anteil an männlichen Katzen und die Prävalenz von C. felis im Bestand signifikant. Zusammenfassend ist zu sagen, dass die Erreger des Katzenschnupfens, einschließlich B. bronchiseptica, trotz Impfprophylaxe weit verbreitetet sind. Von allen untersuchten Einflussfaktoren hat der Hygienestatus den größten Einfluss auf die Erregerprävalenz.
