#52: The competition for admissions to the most elite colleges in America (think Ivy League, US News top 10) is fiercer than ever. That’s because top colleges provide the best academic opportunities. Resources. Career opportunities. Pathways to elite grad schools. Student and alumni communities (where you’ll forge lifelong connections, friendships, potentially even meet your spouse). Not to mention, you’ll have a powerful brand associated with you for life. How can students and parents without special connections distinguish themselves amidst a sea of qualified applicants? This week, I chat again with my friend Shirag Shemmassian, a college admissions expert who has coached thousands of students to successful admission at elite colleges, about the mindsets and accomplishments you really need to win admission to the most elite colleges. We discuss:Biggest myths and misconceptions when it comes to getting into elite collegesWhat elite college admissions committees are looking for, and how to differentiate yourselfWhat level/degree of accomplishment you need to get inWhat students (and parents) can do well ahead of the application year to distinguish themselves, and how far in advance to do itHow lower / middle income / rural / etc students with access to fewer opportunities can still differentiate themselves compellinglyWhy your “message” and the way you deliver it is just as important as your actual accomplishmentsThe mindset students should have when writing their college essaysHow to pick an essay topic and write it compellingly (even if you’re not a great writer)Who should write your recommendation letters, and how to build genuine relationships with recommenders that blossom into great lettersThe qualities that make a stand-out recommendation letterCheck it out here:https://hackyourwealth.com/college-admissionsDid you attend (or send your kid to) an elite college? Are we fixating too much on the Seahawks' one flaw, the pass defense, when there's so much greatness to appreciate? When a team is doing so well, sometimes we dig too far into the nitty gritty. We should be looking at the pass rush, which was our major concern heading into the season, and has outperformed expectations. In What to Watch For, we take a look at the MLB playoffs, the NFL's plan this weekend and the job Earl Thomas didn't land. John Clayton joins us for his Morning Drive! The Seahawks schedule is looking pretty favorable to Paul and he's having a hard time finding a game where they wouldn't be favored. However, it doesn't make the NFC West any less difficult. We preview the division as it stands entering week 4. Seattle's offensive line was something that should've been a concern...but they're actually really good. How did that happen? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Defenses are down around the league and that was on display last night on Monday Night Football. Baltimore is supposed to have a good defense, but they were outgunned by Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. In What to Watch For, we take a look at MLB playoffs, a potential Earl Thomas signing and Seahawks injury updates. John Clayton joins us for his Morning Drive! Can the Seahawks execute in the same fashion for their fourth straight week? They're depending on their offense, which is very unlike a Pete Carroll coached team. Is this sustainable? Trysten Hill injured Chris Carson on Sunday and, it certainly seemed intentional. While Mike McCarthy defends Hill, should he be handed a harsher punishment? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Seahawks win in exciting fashion once again that saw Russell Wilson SHINE in historic fashion. There were many unlikely heroes in this game and we relive the best moments. In What to Watch For, we check in on the Seahawks injuries, NFC West scores and the end to the Mariners season. John Clayton joins us for his Morning Drive! What were the most important plays of the Seahawks victory over the Cowboys? We take you through the biggest and best of Sunday. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Yesterday, Russell Wilson made a declarative statement about MVP votes which shows us a different side of him. Do you like the new Russ? We do. In What to Watch For, we check in with the Pac-12, the Mariners and the Storm. John Clayton joins us for his Morning Drive! Will we see a shootout between the Cowboys and Seahawks? Both head coaches can see it happening - would you be excited to watch? Are the Cowboys the team people most universally love to beat? If so, why? Which other team stacks up? We break it down. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Pete Carroll values closing speed over a fast start, but we've seen a shift in that for the first two games of the season. Pete is coaching to the team he has, rather than the team he wants and it's something that's serving him well so far. Will we see it continue? In What to Watch For, we check in on the Mariners victory, a facial hair standoff and player reaction. John Clayton joins us for his Morning Drive! It's time to Parse Pete! We take a listen to what Coach Carroll had to say in his press conference yesterday and put it through the patented "parser" to tell you exactly what he meant. The Seahawks have given up quite a bit of yards on defense, but we break down the stats to show where it really matters. They certainly need to be better on third down defense if they want to keep winning. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Russell Wilson is playing at an absurd clip - how can he maintain it? Is he potentially more fired up this year than any other? In What to Watch For, we check in on the Mariners, the Seahawks IR and a Storm buzzer beater. John Clayton joins us for his Morning Drive! One talking head thinks 'letting Russ cook' is not a sustainable offense throughout the season. We take a listen to what a famous chef has to say about that. It stinks that Bruce Irvin and Marquise Blair are injured, but would they have been better off losing their first two games and keeping the players? Neither Danny or Paul think so. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Are the Seahawks the best team in the NFC? We make our case. Who is the biggest threat and who's fool's gold? How much will the injuries affect the defense? In What to Watch For, we visit with the Mariners, the Saehawks and Monday Night Football. John Clayton joins us for his Morning Drive! Are you buying it? We hear what Pete Carroll had to say about the pass rush, the offensive line and whether or not we'll see the Seahawks add from outside the organization. Bruce Irvin and Marquise Blair are both out for the season, and we have to acknowledge how awful it is when that happens to athletes. Which loss hurts the Seahawks more? If Seattle were to bring in an outside pass rusher, are you more interested in Michael Bennett or Clay Matthews? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
After a long delay (thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic), Lesli and Maria finally welcome Adrienne Smith, Vancouver-based transgender human rights activist and social justice lawyer, to the podcast. Adrienne challenges both the hosts and our pod's listeners to think about inclusion, allyship and social justice goals in a new frame, and from a distinctly intersectional feminist perspective. We talk about defunding the police, women-only spaces, transgender rights education, and more. They also share their general discomfort with being called a 'lawyer,' and how they trained as a lawyer mainly to "smuggle a legal education over to our side of the barricade". In What the Fuck!, Maria and Adrienne take on the recent disturbing pandemic trend of normalizing poor bashing and anti-homelessness sentiment in Yaletown, the Downtown Eastside and elsewhere in our city. You can learn more about Adrienne Smith and contact them at adriennesmithlaw.com
The Seahawks matchup with the Patriots seems to always come down to the wire, and last night didn't disappoint. Russell Wilson had one of the best games of his career and this offense is special. They seem to be the only ones to stop themselves. LJ Collier should be proud of his stand at the goal line. In What to Watch For, we check in with the Mariners, the 49ers and the latest updates on Seahawks injuries. John Clayton joins us for his Morning Drive! We take you through the best plays of the Seahawks win over the Patriots and which ones impacted the game the most. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Seahawks could make a major statement with a win on Sunday night. How good are the Patriots? Danny and Paul break down expectations. In What to Watch For, we take you to the Mariners, Thursday Night Football and the Pac-12. John Clayton joins us for his Morning Drive! As we do every week, it's time to "Parse Pete", in which we tell you exactly what the Seahawks head coach meant when he spoke yesterday. What are the most telling parts of the Seahawks matchup with the Patriots? What do you feel best about? Danny and Paul share theirs with you. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Sunday's Seahawks game against the Patriots features two of the best coaches in the NFL. Bill Belichick and Pete Carroll have completely different approaches in leadership - so how are they both successful? In What to Watch For, we check in on the Mariners, the AQI and Thursday Night Football. John Clayton joins us for his Morning Drive! How will the Seahawks approach their offensive game plan this weekend? Danny wants to see something more aggressive. Throw it early for the win! Paul brings us the latest from the "Let Schotty Shovel" committee. Seattle has faced Cam Newton several times over the years, but Sunday will present the first time in New England's offense. We preview what to expect. See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.
If the offense is the strength of this Seahawks team, how much of the game plan should be handed over to Russell Wilson? How much of the decision to go for it on 4th down had to do with Russell and is this an indication of things to come? In What to Watch For, we update you on the Mariners, the Big 10 and the NBA playoffs. John Clayton joins us for his Morning Drive! Russell Wilson and Cam Newton are the only two quarterbacks left from the early 2000's. They face off on Sunday and the guys preview what we'll see from both of them. Russell Wilson is named NFC offensive player of the week, which is well deserved. The Big 10 decides to play football again, in the wake of rapid testing, which leaves the Pac-12 the lone Power Five conference not to play. We examine how it'll work. See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.
A certain NFL pundit claims Russell Wilson will walk if the Seahawks don't 'let him cook'. We find it mostly nonsense. After covering his eight seasons in Seattle, Danny knows Russell isn't one to give ultimatums. Would a team honestly operate as though they didn't want two first quarter touchdowns? Paul can't see Russ and Pete having any issues they couldn't discuss without issue. In What to Watch For, we check in on the Mariners, Monday Night Football and pay our respect to Ed Pepple. John Clayton joins us for his Morning Drive! Are you buying it? We heard from Pete Carroll twice yesterday and decipher his thoughts following a huge opening weekend win. Will we see more of Russell Wilson cooking or Schotty shoveling week to week? Pete Carroll said something yesterday that proves just how special he is as a coach. See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.
The Seahawks offense was on fire yesterday - who deserves more credit: Russell Wilson or the game plan? Either way, we soundly enjoyed every minute of it and we tell you why. In What to Watch For, we check in with the Mariners, the 49ers and other NFL results around the league. John Clayton joins us for his Morning Drive! Plays of the game! We take you through the most important Seahawks moments that brought them a solid victory over the Falcons. Russ cooked, the defense stood up on fourth down and you get to relive it all with us. Jamal Adams defined the Seahawks defense we wanted to see yesterday. Does he free up other impact players to be better as well? See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.
We finally saw NFL football last night and the Chiefs did pretty much what we thought they would. After watching Patrick Mahomes last night, how do you see the comparison between he and Russell Wilson? Danny has an even more vested interest in Russ for MVP. In What to Watch For, we check in with the Chiefs, college football towns and Duane Brown. John Clayton joins us for his Morning Drive! There were some lessons learned in last night's game. How do they apply to the Seahawks this season? Will we see Pete Carroll go for it more on 4th down, considering the weapon they have in Russell? BOLD PREDICTION FRIDAY: We make our final bold statements of the week. See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.
The NFL season is upon us! While we feel like we waited forever for it to start, but it also seemed to get here really quickly. Which team is under the most pressure? Who's most likely to win MVP? Who are the most intriguing quarterbacks to watch? We dig into all things NFL. In What to Watch For, we look at the Mariners loss, the starting right corner for the Seahawks and an odd NBA investigation. John Clayton joins us for his Morning Drive! Time to Parse Pete! We put you through our patented translation course to answer your Seahawks questions. Will Quinton Dunbar start? What does he think about the Falcons' additions? did coaching college football help him in a preseason like this? BOLD STATEMENTS: We give you the boldest statements you've ever heard EVER. DN130 with Sherry Peel Jackson- Keep, Protect and Grow Your Income When she was younger, she calls herself the Statue of Liberty. Why? Because she was always after justice. When she saw injustices, she stands up for it, and see to it that it gets resolved. Isn’t that a marvelous quality? It is! And we are happy that she’s come to our podcast to help us control our destiny today and to rise up if you’ve hit your rock bottom or just feeling down. She is no other than, Sherry Peel Jackson. Listening to her early life; how she stood up for what she believes in; how she helped and is helping many people keep, protect and grow their income, is a marvel to hear and learn from. Sherry grew up in a lower-middle-class family with a pretty solid upbringing. Due to her inclination for justice, her highschool’s vice-principal called her parents and tried to urge them to get her to go into law. She was not so convinced about the law system, so when she was scanning a magazine about lucrative careers for black people, she figured she’d wanted to pursue accounting. She did become a CPA, worked at a CPA firm, then at the IRS. Her turning point was when she learned about We the People Foundation and about how income taxes are a fraud. The government prosecuted her and other people in their group and she was convicted on a misdemeanor charge and was given a four-year sentence. After serving three years she was out and had to start from rock bottom. From having nothing to back to a six-figure income, Sherry was able to design a system to help other people blaze a path like herself. Today, she is a personal finance advisor and business strategist helping people keep, protect, and grow their income for them to live a life by their design. Whether you are a full-time or part-time employee wanting to transition from your job to a full-time business that you love, or a business owner wanting to learn more about laws and taxes to keep more of what you earn than to pay income taxes, Sherry is one of the best people to listen to. And today, you will learn a lot about these topics and more! So, be ready to be fired up! Here’s What You Missed Sherry’s past experiences and why she was jailed for standing up for what she believes inWhat does Sherry says we don’t owe income tax? What is the KPG SystemHow do the wealthy don’t pay taxes? How to use the law for you to not pay as much taxSherry’s inputs on what and how to grow home business Knowledge Nuggets [11:28] "We would tell the people to do their own research, do your due diligence and figure out whether you're going to be a slave or get off the plantation." [14:34] "I had to start at rock bottom, no more six figures. I had given up my licenses, my CPA license, and my CFE license. I sent all that back to them..." [15:28] The KPG System: "This system means Keep what you earn, Protect what you earn, and Grow what you earn. I actually use that system with me as, you know, the test subject. And that's where I started from rock bottom, back to six figures." [18:16] The wealthy don't pay taxes. Leona Helmsley said a long time ago, "Only the poor people pay taxes". Because the tax code, the way it's written, it helps all these businesses, and these congressmen and senators and all that. I'm saying is using the law, just like the wealthy, will have you come up with the results of where you're still making money, but you don't pay as much tax. [21:18] Keeping what we earned means two things: 1. Not spending that money. 2. Reducing your expenses. [21:43] Success comes from being able to execute a high level for an extended period of time. [22::45] It's not about what you earn, it's about what you keep. And if you earn it, but you haven't put systems in place to keep it, then you're going to lose everything you have. Protect from the predators. [23:50] Grown your money. You get wealthy by, making sure that you don't spend more than you earn for one thing, but you can't save yourself rich. [25:35] "Questions to design your future". what do I want? why do I want it? what am I willing to give up to get it? [26:57] We're not gonna grow wealth with our job. A job and education in college are highly overrated. Money is easy to do when you create something one time and then you sell it to millions of people. [35:05] You find ways to get the resources. That's all the wealthy people do. The rich get richer because they use it money not to go buy stuff that is not liabilities but to get more assets. [37:21] Get a mentor. Get with somebody who, who is already doing what you want to do and get trained by them Important Reads and Links Recommended Books, People, Publications: Documentary: The Great IRS Hoax: Why We Don't Owe Income Tax Books: How to Stick It to the IRS: Confessions from a Former Insider by Sherry JacksonThou Shall Prosper: Ten Commandments for Making Money by Daniel LapinPeople: Myron Golden (https://www.myrongolden.com/) Sherry Peel Jackson Website: http://wakethepeople.com/Sherry Peel Jackson Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/SherryPeelJacksonSherry Peel Jackson YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/jacksonsherrypeelSherry Peel Jackson Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sherrypeeljackson/Sherry Peel Jackson Twitter: https://twitter.com/speeljSherry Peel Jackson Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sherrypeeljackson Love #DreamNation? There's a certain free agent pass rusher who's in the news again and Pete Carroll was asked about it yesterday. We've talked way too much about this pass rusher the last five months, so we actively try not to say his name. But we must talk about him once again. In What to Watch For, we check in with the Mariners, Josh Gordon and Larry Scott. John Clayton joins us for his Morning Drive! It's time to parse Pete! Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports thinks the Seahawks are the most likely landing spot for Antonio Brown. The guys don't see it as a good fit. Does he deserve another chance in the NFL? The market seems to have completely tanked for Clowney. See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.
Danny laments the fact the Thunder's season didn't end last night, as they defeat the Rockets in game 6. About Dr. David DayDr. David Day is a Professor of Psychology at Claremont McKenna College and Director of the Kravis Leadership Institute. Day is a prolific scholar, a great conversationalist, and has served on the faculty at Pennsylvania State University, Singapore Management University, and the University of Western Australia. His goal - Make a Difference.Quotes from This Episode"You want to invest in your development because everybody needs to be a leader, even when they are not the leader.""How do you view yourself? What is your identity? What's your self-efficacy? What is your level of self-awareness? These are proximal outcomes of a developmental process that we can measure and will give us some idea of whether long-term change is likely to be happening.""So the whole notion of a leader identity is really important because it drives resource allocation. Our identity is basically what we think is important. And we invest our most valuable resource, our time, in what we think is most important.""This whole distinction that there's a leader and there's a follower is a misnomer. People are both.""Leader development is really about developing an individual to be more effective in leadership roles and processes, whereas leadership development is really developing collective capacity for leadership. We don't know a lot about the latter and we know virtually nothing about how the leader development piece informs the leadership development piece."Recent Articles by Dr. David DayKragt, D., & Day, D. It feels as though we're right back where we were in March, with college football on the brink of postponement.
