By 8-9 years old, Dr. Shirag Shemmassian developed facial and vocal tics. He was later diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome and knew he had involuntary tics but was unable to stop them. Dr. Shemmassian attended an all Armenian private school where there was no understanding of what Tourette's syndrome was. His parents would tell him to just stop making the tics. He shares his insights that parents believe children are a reflection of themselves which can make it difficult for some parents to accept that their child has a condition that they are unable to relate to. “Learning how to position yourself to impress admissions committees and seeing that happen and then helping other people and then through word of mouth, someone telling someone else that they wanted to go into this field as well and really helping them, I think just further reinforced that my role was to help other people become wonderful physicians." - Dr. Shemmassian Dr. Shirag Shemmassian is the founder of Shemmassian Academic Consulting. He's one of the world's foremost experts on medical school admissions, college admissions and graduate school admissions. For nearly 20 years, he and his team have helped thousands of students get into medical school and top colleges using his systematic and proprietary approach. A lot of our physician listeners may get questions often, but there also may be parents listening who have high-school-age kids thinking about where they're going to apply to undergraduate school. Or they may have kids who are pre-med in college applying to medical school. Here, Dr. Shemmassian shares his wisdom and gives us insights into the process, which can often be stressful and overwhelming. From a young age, Dr. Shemmassian knew he wanted to go into healthcare. His immigrant parents were always talking about going to school and getting a job in a helping profession to earn a living. He really enjoyed science and was always drawn toward medicine. when I was in college, I was pre-med the whole time and taking all my courses, I did quite well. However, as someone who grew up with Tourette's Syndrome, over time, he was nudged towards psychiatry and mental health. When he graduated, Dr. Shemmassian decided to make a pivot and did his Ph.D. in clinical psychology rather than go to medical school. Even when he was in college, he was helping people get into medical schools and things like that. His parents didn't know how to navigate the educational system here in the states. Continuing to help others around him get into schools further reinforced that his role was to assist people in becoming wonderful physicians. In this engaging conversation, we discuss whether a school's status or prestige plays a critical role in getting accepted into a good medical school. We also talk about combined programs and the difference between an M.D. and a D.O. Dr. Shemmassian shares his opinions on choosing between traditional medical school and P.A. school and who it would benefit. We wrap up with tips for nontraditional students who are interested in becoming a physician and what that admissions process could look like. What's Inside: School prestige and its impact on getting accepted into medical school. Differences between M.D. and D.O. programs. P.A. school and who it's best suited for. Tips for non-traditional students. Are you a parent who puts the needs of your child first? Most parents would say “yes” but in this episode Dr. Shirag Shemmassian and host Ian Lobas challenge listeners to examine their programming or the programming that was passed down from their parents. Are you more concerned about how people will view you and your family than your kid's best interests? Many parents have never asked their children what they're into and why they are passionate about it, yet there is often an assumption that all children should go to college. Should they? In this conversation, Dr. Shemmassian and Ian discuss school systems, teachers vs educators and the fears that drive many parents to project their insecurities onto their children. #52: The competition for admissions to the most elite colleges in America (think Ivy League, US News top 10) is fiercer than ever. That’s because top colleges provide the best academic opportunities. Resources. Career opportunities. Pathways to elite grad schools. Student and alumni communities (where you’ll forge lifelong connections, friendships, potentially even meet your spouse). Not to mention, you’ll have a powerful brand associated with you for life. How can students and parents without special connections distinguish themselves amidst a sea of qualified applicants? This week, I chat again with my friend Shirag Shemmassian, a college admissions expert who has coached thousands of students to successful admission at elite colleges, about the mindsets and accomplishments you really need to win admission to the most elite colleges. We discuss:Biggest myths and misconceptions when it comes to getting into elite collegesWhat elite college admissions committees are looking for, and how to differentiate yourselfWhat level/degree of accomplishment you need to get inWhat students (and parents) can do well ahead of the application year to distinguish themselves, and how far in advance to do itHow lower / middle income / rural / etc students with access to fewer opportunities can still differentiate themselves compellinglyWhy your “message” and the way you deliver it is just as important as your actual accomplishmentsThe mindset students should have when writing their college essaysHow to pick an essay topic and write it compellingly (even if you’re not a great writer)Who should write your recommendation letters, and how to build genuine relationships with recommenders that blossom into great lettersThe qualities that make a stand-out recommendation letterCheck it out here:https://hackyourwealth.com/college-admissionsDid you attend (or send your kid to) an elite college? What do you think principally contributed to your / their admissions success? What would you have done differently if you could do it over? On this week’s episode of the PNC podcast, Dr. Shirag Shemmassian joins me to discuss a nonclinical career I’ve never considered before: academic consultant. Shirag was pre-med throughout his college career and planned to be a surgeon. But when the time came for him to apply to medical school, he decided to switch his focus to the area of his research, clinical psychology. With little direction when he began preparing to attend graduate school, he studied the process that he had to navigate on his own. And he began helping people with their applications 15 years ago. In 2015, he founded Shemmassian Academic Consulting as his way to help more struggling students. Now he employs dozens of part time consultants, many of whom are young physicians, to help students prepare for the MCAT and the arduous process of applying to medical school.
