This interview took place on January 25th 2024 and permission was given to share this week."We don't want to live in this violence, in this conflict anymore. We want to end it. And as Yael always said, we shouldn't, you know, keep managing the conflict. We should resolve it. And this is why we are raising our voice and we want the international support for this [and we are raising] our voices to stop what is going on."Women have always been at the forefront of the peace movement. FiLiA reached out to two remarkable grassroots organisations, Women Wage Peace and Women of the Sun, who are operating across Israel and Palestine and advocating for dialogue, understanding, and lasting solutions. Their impactful work has not gone unnoticed; Women of the Sun and Women Wage Peace are nominated to the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize and both organisations were included in the 2024 Time Magazine Women of the Year List.M.H. from Women of the Sun and Yael Braudo-Bahat from Women Wage Peace discuss their aims, how they work together, and their hopes for the future.

One of the lesser-known consequences of the horrific Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on Oct. 7, has been the shutdown of normal life for Israelis living in northern Israel: hundreds of families who live near the border with Lebanon had to be evacuated from their homes to escape the barrage of rockets fired by Hezbollah forces, which continues to this day. And that has meant the suspension of hockey games and practise for the small coterie of Israeli players in the country's hockey program housed at the Canadian-founded arena in Metulla. But thanks to Canadian supporters of the Israeli hockey program, the Vancouver and Winnipeg Jewish communities, and Maccabi Canada, twenty hockey players between the ages of 12-18 got a break from the tension and anxiety of living through the war, with an all-expenses-paid two week trip to Canada. One group visited Vancouver, while another visited Winnipeg-where they got to practise at the Winnipeg Jets' training arena, meet with Indigenous elders and the local Jewish day school, and even throw some strikes at a local bowling alley. Last month, the teens travelled to Toronto to end their trip, with the requisite stop at the CN Tower and a visit to what some might consider the shrine to the game of hockey: The Hockey Hall of Fame. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, producer Zachary Kauffman speaks to Liv Sharabi, 18, who plays defence for the Israel Women's National Team; Maksim Dashanov, also 18, who played defence on Israel's gold-medal winning U18 Men's National hockey team at the 2023 World Championships in Iceland, and to chaperone Melissa Wronzberg, a veteran Canadian women's hockey player. What we talked about: Learn more about Mike Levin and the Israeli U20 Men's national hockey team's quest for gold at the IIHF World Championships in Bulgaria last weekend, in The CJN. Read why Israel's U20 men's hockey team nearly didn't play the 2024 IIHF tournament for Division lll, in The CJN. On today's solo show, we tackling some common myths surrounding women in the Bible. My prayer is that you would come away from this episode feeling encouraged and better equipped in your ability to study, understand, and interpret the Bible for yourself, to allow Scripture to interpret Scripture, and to delight in God's design for and view of women. What I Chat about in Today's Episode: ~5 common myths surrounding women in the Bible (and what the Bible actually says!): *Bathsheba seduced David and was guilty of adultery *The woman at the well was a serial divorcee and likely guilty of adultery *Deborah's leadership of Israel was a blight on their nation's history and a curse on Israel *Women are more likely to be deceived than men *Women do not teach men in Scripture (and are not supposed to) ~The impossibility of Bathsheba seducing David (Hint: It has to do with the Levitical practice of bathing in a mikveh) ~The forceful language in Scripture (and blame placed solely at the feet of David!) that points to Bathsheba being the victim of rape ~Why it is impossible that the woman at the well had been an intentional serial divorcee ~The crucial importance of growing in your understanding of the historical and cultural context of the Bible if you're going to interpret Scripture accurately ~The common misinterpretation of Isaiah 3:12, and how we know Deborah was not a curse on Israel ~Understanding, from Scriptural evidence, that Deborah was not God's "plan B" ~The words of Paul and James and how they both refute the idea that women are more easily deceived than men; other problematic issues with this myth ~What the entire book of Proverbs has to teach us about the folly of believing women are more easily deceived than men ~The prophetess Huldah and why God's treatment of her is so eye-opening and helpful for our understanding of how God views women teaching men Scriptural truth ~Why the story of Priscilla, Aquila, and Apollos is such an interesting one ~And more! *Content Warning* Violence is centered in the story of Jael. You might choose not to listen with young ones around. *Trigger Warning* Rape is mentioned in this episode, though it's not the main topic. *** Ever heard of Jael? If you haven't read Judges recently, she might have slipped your mind. She certainly had for me. But her story is incredible as it shows that God can use women to protect His people. She was a strong woman who took decisive, though violent, action and helped usher in a period of peace for the Israelites. So let's learn more about Jael and even more about God! Although Deborah's story is described in just two short chapters of Scripture, we have so much to learn about her. She was a leader, judge, and prophet of Israel who spoke God's truth and message to the military leader, resulting in a huge victory for Israel. As I explored more into her story, I discovered quite a bit of controversy- I'll address that here and then we'll dig into her attributes and what we can learn about God through her story. Join me as we dive into the story of Deborah this week. Key Bible Verses: Judges 2, 4-5 *** If this podcast has blessed you in some way, please consider leaving me a written review on Apple Podcasts. Today on The Leaders' Brief - After the signing of the Abraham Accord between Bahrain, UAE, and Israel, over a million people have reportedly signed an online charter, called the Palestine Charter, against normalization with Israel. Hundreds of women were detained a few days ago in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, during a protest march demanding an end to President Alexander Lukashenko's rule. Opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya praised the brave women of Belarus and said the women are “marching despite being constantly menaced and put under pressure.” The United Kingdom Space Agency is giving over $1.3 million to 7 firms to advance novel sensor technologies and smart algorithms to improve surveillance on objects moving overhead. The initiative will radically improve the UK's ability to interpret data focused on tracking satellites and space debris. This week, to mark the start of the school year here in Israel, we’re revisiting a live Times of Israel/Beit Avi Chai event with one of Israel’s greatest educators, Prof. Alice Shalvi. Back in January 2019, Shalvi spoke with Jewish World editor Amanda Borschel-Dan onstage at Beit Avi Chai in Jerusalem in honor of the publication of her memoir “Never A Native.” The memoir has since been awarded the National Jewish Book Award for Women's Studies. Shalvi will soon celebrate 94. Among her many achievements, she is an Israel Prize Laureate, and as one of the country's pioneering religious feminists, she is one of the founders of the Israel Women's Network. In addition to years teaching at the Hebrew University, Shalvi established the Pelech High School for Girls, a school that still continues her tradition of strong learning -- and strong women. Israel about to get royal Tomorrow Israel is getting a very special visitor. Knesset eyes new rights for LGBTQ+ Community Israel has often touted itself as one of the only places in the Middle East where people who identify as LGBTQ+ can freely live their lives. Legislation backing these freedoms, however, has sometimes been an uphill battle for this community. Well now the Knesset is eyeing two new bills that would greatly protect same-sex couples, and grant them the equality they've long been fighting for. Laying track for peace The Israeli Government is saying ‘full steam ahead' to an incredible new trade plan. The proposal would extend the current railways in Haifa to the east and connect them with train lines in Jordan but most amazing of all this means that Israeli rails would then be connected with grids as far as Europe, Saudi Arabia, and the rest of the Persian Gulf. Surfers say ‘don't poison us' Israeli environmentalists have just found a very clever and perhaps even record-setting way to protest the construction of new natural gas rigs less than ten kilometers off of Israel's coast. Donning the mantra “don't poison us” nearly a thousand Israelis grabbed their surfboards and paddled out into the Mediterranean this weekend to make a massive human circle at sea. Isaac Herzog to head Jewish agency In spite of Prime Minister Netanyahu's hopes, opposition Party Knesset member, Isaac Herzog has today officially been voted in as the new head of the Jewish agency. The Strong Women’s Club Women's Success Stories in Business and in Life
For this first episode of The Strong Women's Club podcast, I chose to interview Susie Dvoskin, who has make it her life's work to empower women and to prove to them that they can do whatever they really want to do. Susie and her husband, Danny, organize the Israel Women's Triathlon in Memory of Tamar Dvoskin, their daughter, who was killed in a hit and run accident when she was cycling and training for a triathlon, 19 years ago. In this episode you will hear: How Susie teaches her motto “Every Woman is a Winner”, and how she uses that to bring women to accomplish what they thought they never could How it's ok for women to put themselves first, and make space to participate in serious athletic events, and how they can build support around themselves in order to succeed. How reverse discrimination is necessary, to give women a protected environment where they can flourish How positive energy is circular: if you give it, it goes to those around you, and comes backt to you. How it's ok to ask for help, and that asking for help doesn't mean that you're weak. How Susie deals with her cancer, saying that she is “healthy with cancer”. How teaching synagogue skills to women empowers them to take on roles that have been traditionally male dominated. How a 50 year-old woman took what she accomplished in the triathlon, and got her PhD. You will mainly be inspired by Susie's energy and glow, which you can hear as she speaks.
