Today's guests founded the groundbreaking Punchbowl News. Anna Palmer worked for the Legal Times and Roll Call before joining Politico in 2011. While at the Legal Times she began to attract national attention for her work and investigating the activities of lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who ultimately went to prison. Not long after joining Politico, she joined the team of journalists investigating sexual harassment allegations against presidential candidate, Herman Cain, who subsequently suspended his campaign.While at Politico, she served as its senior Washington correspondent. She also led Women Rule a leading platform aimed at expanding leadership opportunities for women and hosted the critically acclaimed Women Rule podcast. She also got to work with our other guest who would become her primary writing partner. Jake Sherman grew up in Connecticut before attending the George Washington University and Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism. He worked for the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek and the Minneapolis Star Tribune in their Washington DC bureaus and joined Politico in 2009. He too became a successful senior writer for Politico. But it seems to me that much of the real magic started happening when he began to partner with Anna. They collaborated extensively at Politico, especially covering the U S Congress. They reported on corruption scandals among Democrats and Republicans. Including on the matter of Congressman Aaron Schock who ultimately resigned. For four years, they took over the wildly popular Politico playbook after Mike Allen's departure, further expanding its readership. And in 2019, our dynamic duo wrote The Hill To Die On: The Battle for Congress and the Future of Trump's America, a New York Times bestseller. They left Politico in 2020 to start Punchbowl News, which would offer non-partisan reporting with a special focus on Washington's elite power players. Anna would become Punchbowl News' CEO with one of the top names in the business. She has been a political commentator for CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, and Washington Week. A Ban on all Stock Trading is Proposed. The host for this show is Tim Apicella. The guests are Jay Fidell, Winston Welch, Karen Buzzard and Cynthia Lee Sinclair. The Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act was passed in 2012 with overwhelming bipartisan support: Senate 96-3, House 417-3. Congress hasn't agreed on much since then. Perhaps the criminal conviction of lobbyist Jack Abramoff had something to due with the new law. Since passage, numerous members of congress have found themselves in violation of the law- full transparency and timely disclosure of stock trades made by members. In the past months, 57 members - both GOP and Democrats - have been identified as in violation of the law. Reasons for the absence of filings for stock trading includes: 1. Ignorance of the law 2. Clerical errors 3. Accountant mistakes. The push to enact a new law would prohibit all stock activity trading for all members of congress and spouses. A bold new law which appears to have support from both sides of the isle. Cleaning up the corruption of congress is rare and welcomed. But why now? Today on Midday, a conversation about prison reform. In March 2020, as the COVID-19 crisis began and as part of the CARES Act passed by Congress, Attorney General William Barr allowed certain low-level offenders to serve their sentences under home confinement, a move intended to decrease prison populations and cut down transmission of the coronavirus. For 76-year-oldGwen Levi, who had been incarcerated for 16 years on a drug dealing conviction, this opportunity allowed her to be with her sons and care for her 94-year-old mother. She also became a volunteer with several prison advocacy organizations, and she went back to school to better her skills for a life outside of prison walls. While attending a computer class, she thought she had permission to turn her phone off. When officials couldn't immediately find her during that class, she was sent back to prison. She's back home now, continuing to serve the remainder of her sentence under home detention. She joins me to talk about a new threat that she and other prisoners face of returning to prison. Also joining us is Kevin Ring, a former congressional staffer and federal lobbyist who served 16 months in federal prison for his involvement in the Jack Abramoff scandal in 2011. He is now the President of FAMM, Families Against Mandatory Minimums. From the author of the landmark bestseller, a jaw-dropping investigation of the decades of deliberate-and lucrative-conservative misrule In his previous book - What's the Matter with Kansas? - Frank explained why working America votes for politicians who reserve their favors for the rich.
