In his debut novel "The Riveter," author Jack Wang tells the story of two star-crossed lovers set amidst the backdrop of anti-Chinese racism in Canada that lasted decades before and well through the Second World War. And while the story may be fiction, there is an element of truth in this tale of love and war. Jack Wang joins Jeyan Jeganathan to discuss.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In The Riveter, Jack Wang explores the untold stories of Asian Canadians during the Second World War. The novel follows Josiah Chang, a Chinese Canadian soldier navigating the horrors of war while facing discrimination at home. Jack joins Mattea Roach to talk about the historical context of the novel, the complexities of writing about war and the value of diverse perspectives. If you enjoyed this conversation, check out these episodes:V.V. Set in Canada and the European theater during World War Two, this moving debut from Jack Wang tells the story of Josiah Chang, a Canadian logger and riveter of Chinese ancestry. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Alan Minskoff discuss Feodor Chin's precise and clear narration. The novel details Chang's challenges and unveils a love story with Poppy, whom he meets when he and she both work at a Vancouver shipyard. This is a wartime novel (Josiah is a heroic paratrooper), a love story (Josiah and Poppy flout convention) and an indictment of restrictive laws on race. Meticulously researched and well written. Josef Schuster, president of IPOX Schuster, says that the market for initial public offerings isn't just hot right now — it has outperformed the stock market this year, despite the market having gone up to record-high levels — but it is safer than it has been in years, with fewer issues going public and with much of the risk of default having been shifted to the pre-IPO market. And while artificial-intelligence plays have gotten a lot of the headlines and attention, Schuster says that industrials and other sectors have seen more stable and generally more profitable IPO activity. Lester Jones, chief economist for the National Wholesale Beer Association says that the November Beer Purchasers Index shows a highly unusual but completely neutral outlook for distributor sentiment, meaning the industry can't tell if times are bullish or bearish with year-end in sight. Plus college financial aid advisor Jack Wang, host of the new "Smart College Buyer" podcast, helps Chuck answer a listener's question about college loans coming due, and jeopardinging an unprepared parent's finances.

I've been closely following all of the Science Headlines in the news on a daily basis for the past 18 months. My observation of where all this is going is… not great. Much of this discussion has focused on how to make you look good on paper, but what happens when you make the shortlist for the job opening?Selection panels are still the gatekeepers for the vast majority of jobs out there, and the interview process is their weapon of choice. LabBytes is a new shorter format I'm trying out? #001 is an update on why “Crossover Connections” had to end.I started this podcast in January 2023, and next week will mark 30 episodes around the Business of Science. I love doing the podcast but it has taken up a lot of my down time.Outside of family time and carer duties, my supposed “down-time” consists of:* YouTube Channel (upload 3-4 videos a week)* Podcast (1 episode a week)* Substack newsletter (1 post a week)* TikTok/Instagram (1-2 videos a week)* LinkedIn (2 posts a week)* Twitter/X (2-4 posts a week)* Photography (1 outing every 1-2 months). So… this is a lot. I had to really reflect on why I'm doing any of this. The core truth of it all is that my Ikigai is helping people navigate uncertainty. Modern career paths are riddled with loopholes and trapdoors, and I believe my voice in this space (as a scientist and educator) has value. I need to shift my strategy for 2024 to make everything work though, and here's my 3 step plan:1. A Rebrand.Out of all of my online ventures, my YouTube channel has been around the longest - BioLab Collective with Jack Wang. For the sake of simplicity and basic brand awareness, everything I'm doing will use the same name. The Podcast, TikTok, Instagram, Substack… all of it is now called BioLab Collective. 2. New ContentFree Substack subscribers:My ongoing commitment to you going forward is 1 podcast episode in your feed every Monday morning. Part of this will include shorter “LabBytes” episodes like this one (~5 minutes) giving quicker updates around the Business of Science.Paid Substack Subscribers:Early access to my new “Job Hunter” series: * How to apply for live job listings in Science and Tech. * New jobs every week (mostly based in Australia), spanning across both entry-level and senior positions in Research, Education, Academia, Government, and Industry. * Members on my YouTube channel can also get early access to this series (first episode goes live soon). At the end of every month I will make a compilation that is available to all subscribers. While free subscribers won't get the benefit of the timeliness of job listings, my strategies will still be relevant for future opportunities. 3. A More Sustainable ModelI'm hoping steps 1 and 2 will allow me to hire an editor and scale up the level of content production, but sustainability isn't just about revenue. To replenish my creative inspiration, I am starting a completely different venture in 2024. Bokeh Therapy with Jack Wang - a YouTube channel that focuses on the intersections between Photography and Mental Health. It is completely unrelated to my day job (and anything to do with the Business of Science), but building a different online community will allow me to grow as a creator and a more compelling communicator across different genres. … and that's it for now. Thanks for reading, listening, and watching in 2023, and I will continue to deliver in 2024.The year's not over yet! 2 more podcast episodes left on Burnout in Science, and a round up of the biggest Science headlines in 2023.Talk soon,Jack. Thanks for reading BioLab Collective with Jack Wang! This is a special edition episode where I am joined by C.E. Hoffman to talk about Taylor Swift's new album, Midnights. We geek out about our favorite tracks, dive deep into how Taylor has grown as an artist, admit that neither of us were "swifties", and attempt to figure out what kind of literature Taylor Swift might be into. For those who don't know C.E. Hoffman: C.E. Hoffman is a published writer from Canada. Sluts and Whores, their #OwnVoices Urban Fantasy debut, was released Feb 2021 by Thurston Howl Publications. They've edited the e-zine Visceral Uterus since 2012. Meanwhile, their novels incubate. Inspirations run from Edith Wharton to Martin Millar to Zadie Smith. C's brain hosts tea parties for Haruki Murakami and C S Lewis. J D Salinger rants to Allen Ginsberg while Allen makes eyes at Irvine Welsh. Michelle Tea recites with Assata Shakur, Joy Harjo, and Saul Williams. Shakespeare's always there, but he's shy. So are the musicians. (MCR, Marianas Trench, The Hold Steady, Azealia Banks, Eminem, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meredith Wilson…) C devours books. Favourites of late: There There by Tommy Orange, Jack Wang's We Two Alone, and Neil S Reddy's forthcoming JubJub Juice. They're psyched to read Second Bell by Gabriela Houston, whilst enjoying Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo. C writes about magic, sex, and death. They hug trees, love cats, and clearly dig Taylor Swift's new album.
